Elaine Ruth Slipp

2003

ROCKLAND — Elaine Ruth Slipp, 79, passed away at Shore Village Nursing Center, Rockland, on May 28, 2003.

She was born in Bangor and was predeceased by her parents, Doris and Maurice Slipp, and a brother, Richard Slipp.

Ms. Slipp attended schools in Bangor and Ohio, and was a graduate of Ohio University.

For many years she taught school in southern Maine and retired several years ago from the Department of Human Services in Augusta.

Several cousins survive her.

At Ms. Slipp's request, there will only be a committal service at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor at a date to be announced by the family.

Friends who wish may contribute in her memory to an animal refuge center of their choice.

Arrangements by the Lindquist Funeral Home, Yarmouth.

John P. Arata

1911-2003

WINTHROP — John P. Arata, 92, of Charles Street in Winthrop died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care, Graybirch Drive, in Augusta.

He was born in Hallowell on Feb. 27, 1911, the son of John B. and Ismene (Neri) Arata.

John graduated from Hallowell High School in the class of 1929.

He worked for Bath Iron Works during World War II, and later Westinghouse Electric Corporation.

For several years, he was employed by the state of Maine Department of Transportation, retiring from the Maine State Taxation Department in 1971.

After retirement, from 1986 through December 2002, John worked part time as a driver for Bob Barrows Chevrolet in Winthrop.

He and his wife, Avis, were members of Good Sam RV Club and the Maine chapter of WIT RV Club, Maineabagos.

An avid outdoorsman, John enjoyed camping, boating, water-skiing, motorcycling, snowmobiling and spending time at their camp on Maranacook Lake in Winthrop.

He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Claude, Manning and Eugene Arata; and three sisters, Ermelene Nickerson, Josephine Flynn and Esther Greeley.

John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Avis Arata, of Winthrop; two sons, Ryan J. Arata of Surfside Beach, S.C., and Carl G. Arata and his wife, Shirley, of Winthrop; two daughters, Joyce A. and her husband, William A. Perry Jr., of Gardiner and Violette E. and her husband, Raymond L. Bernier, of Upton; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin St., Winthrop.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Glenside Cemetery, Turkey Lane, Winthrop.

For those who wish, contributions in John's memory may be made to the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Pet Haven Lane, Augusta 04330.

Arnold R. Blair

1943-2003

CHELSEA — Arnold R. Blair, 60, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Waterville on Jan. 20, 1943, the son of Ralph E. and Virginia G. (Brann) Blair Sr.

Arnold graduated from Winslow High School, class of 1961.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1966.

He lived several years in the Waterville area and had been a resident of Chelsea for the past 18 years.

Surviving are three brothers, Paul A. Blair of Hollywood, Fla., Ralph E. Blair Jr. of Winsted, Conn., and Thomas E. Blair of Town Hill; three sisters, Jeanne P. Wyns of East Providence, R.I., and Diane E. Blair and Carol A. Farris, both of Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are his caregivers for the past 18 years, Juanita and Harvey Mason of Chelsea.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the new Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MidMaine Homeless Shelter, 28 Ticonic St., Waterville 04901.

Walter Howard Hayden

1927-2003

MADISON — Walter Howard Hayden, 75, of Madison died July 30, 2003, at his home with his family at his side.

He was born in Jordanville, Nova Scotia, on Nov. 2, 1927, the son of Howard G. and Dorothy (Jordan) Hayden.

He came to Madison as an infant and attended Madison School.

He served in the Army from 1946 to 1949, stationed on the islands of Adak in the Aleutian Islands.

He worked as a heavy-equipment mechanic for A.P. Wyman, W.H. Hinman and H.E. Sargent, retiring in 1991 from Sargent's after 30-plus years of service.

Walter was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Indian Spring Lodge 115 and was honored to serve as noble grand and district deputy.

He served as an Encampment Member for more than 50 years.

He was also a member of the Euclid Masonic Lodge 194, Minerva Chapter 74, Order of the Eastern Star, and American Legion Post 39.

He was a 51-year member of the Madison Fire Department (1945-1996), rising to the position of fire chief; and a life member of the Maine Fire Chiefs Association.

He is predeceased by his parents; his son Shannon; and brothers Parker and Lorne.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeraldine (O'Donal); son Leslie of Stratton and his children, Charity Dawbin of North Haverhill, N.H., Brook of Stratton and Amber of Fort Carson, Colo.; daughter Wanda of Mercer; son Scott and his son, Nathaniel, of Madison; great-granddaughters Garnet Dawbin of North Haverhill, N.H.; niece Kimberely and her husband, David Hallee, of Waterville; and nephews Kevin and his wife, Karen, of Madison and Kent of Madison; also several cousins in Maine and Nova Scotia.

At Walt's request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral.

A gathering of family and friends, 1-5 p.m., along with a 2 p.m. Masonic service, will be held Aug. 9 at his home at 68 Preble Ave., Madison.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Euclid Masonic Lodge 194, Minerva Chapter 74 Order of Eastern Star, c/o Cheryl A. Perkins, secretary, 574 Preble Ave., Madison 04950.

Ellen Hunter Achorn

1922-2003

WALDOBORO — Ellen Hunter Achorn, 81, of Waldoboro passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Ellen was born May 21, 1922, in Berkeley, R.I., the daughter of Matthew and Emily Cottrell Hunter.

She graduated in 1940 from Lewiston High School. She was employed in the office of F.W. Woodworth Company for three years before moving to Hallowell with her family. The next three years she was employed in the personnel office of Edwards Manufacturing Co. in Augusta. In 1946 she married Philip H. Achorn of Hallowell and lived there 10 years before moving to the Madison-Skowhegan area, where her husband was employed by Depositors Trust Co.

She was a loving wife and mother, dedicating her life to her husband and three fine sons.

She was especially proud of her five grandchildren.

She was a volunteer at Fieldcrest Nursing Home in Waldoboro.

She was a member of the Redington-Fairview General Hospital Women's Auxiliary in Skowhegan and the Women's Club of Waldoboro.

She was also a member of the Old South Congregational Church in Hallowell, and attended the Orff's Corner Community Church in Waldoboro.

She predeceased by a son, David P. Achorn of Chelsea; and brother David Hunter of Augusta.

She is survived by her husband, Philip H. Achorn of Waldoboro; sons Stephen A. Achorn and his wife, Cathie, of Upton, Mass., Paul R. Achorn and his wife, Suzanne L., of Chelsea; grandchildren Angela and Julie Achorn of Upton, andBradley, Vanessa and Stephanie Achorn of Chelsea; brothers Matthew Hunter and his wife, Elsie, of Chelsea, Thomas Hunter and his wife, Dorothy, of Monmouth, and Ralph Hunter and his wife, Barbara, of Ocala, Fla.

Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, at Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro, followed by a reception at Broad Bay Congregational Church, next to the funeral home.

The Rev. Robert Bellows will officiate.

In memory of Ellen and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.

Jeanne Blaisdell

1924-2003

AUGUSTA — Jeanne Payne Blaisdell died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility at Gray Birch in Augusta after a long illness.

A loving and gifted mother, daughter and wife, Jeanne retired from state service in 1988 to a cottage in East Boothbay.

Throughout her working years, she also found time to be an active participant in community life in Readfield, Hallowell, South Portland and the Boothbay region.

She was born in Fairfield on June 12, 1924, a daughter of Doris E. Low and Basil T. Payne.

After graduating from Cony High School, she attended Gates Business College in Augusta, studied with the New York School of Interior Design, and completed many university courses.

In the last years of state employment, Jeanne was assistant to the superintendent of the Maine Youth Center in South Portland.

She began service as secretary to the original personnel department and Maine State Retirement System.

This was followed by duties with the Adjutant General's Department, the Administrative Hearing Office, Public Relations Division of the Department of Economic Development, and as private secretary to the Senate president of the 101st Legislature.

In 1950 she was appointed by Gov. Frederick G. Payne as a first lieutenant and first woman in the office of Civil Defense and Public Service.

She was a member of the Maine Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; a member, chairman and treasurer of the Readfield school board; and later a member of the Hallowell-Farmingdale school board.

For many years she was also a member and officer in the Readfield and Kennebec County Republican party organizations.

In 1964 Jeanne was named employee representative with the Maine State Employees Association to coordinate women's activities in state employment and within MSEA membership.

She then joined the staff at Stevens School in Hallowell, transferring in 1976 to South Portland, from where she retired.

Her father and her husband, Alton Blaisdell, who died in 1964, predeceased her.

Surviving are her mother, Doris L. Payne of Gardiner; a sister, Rachel P. Craig of Hallowell; a brother, Norman A. Payne of Vero Beach, Fla.; a son James R. Archer of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a daughter, Penelope Blaisdell Weed of North Monmouth; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Facility, Skilled Unit at Gray Birch, 37 Gray Birch Drive, Augusta 04330.
