Gabriel "Bill" J. Boivin

RUMFORD -- Gabriel "Bill" J. Boivin, 81, of Rumford, died on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Rumford Community Hospital where he had been a patient for two and a half weeks.

He was born in East Angus, Canada on December 14, 1919, the son of Arthur and Clara (Lepage) Boivin. He was one of 10 children.

He resided in the Rumford-Mexico area for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors and puttering.

Survivors include one brother, Ovila "Pete" Boivin of Arizona; three sisters, Eda Lozeau of Arizona, Yvonne Michaud of Cascade, NH and Anita Morin of Rumford; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, one brother and four sisters.

Burial will be held at a later date in the spring. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 52 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011 or made over the phone at 1-800-227-2345.

Avis M. Lyons

RUMFORD -- Avis M. Lyons, 89, died Tuesday, December 4, 2001 at her residence on Penobscot Street in Rumford after a long battle with cancer.

Avis was born in Lexington, Maine on March 17, 1912, the daughter of Joseph A. and Bessie M. (Longley) Longley. She moved to Rumford in 1924, attended schools in Fairfield and Rumford, and was a member of the Rumford First Baptist Church.

Avis spent the summers from 1964 to 2000 as a meeter, greeter and sales person at the Lyon's Den Antique Shop, Hanover.

She was married in Mexico on November 30, 1929 to the late Elmer H. Lyons, who died in Dixfield on July 18, 1987.

Avis is survived by two sons, Elmer Lyons, Jr. and wife, Nancy of Hanover, and Clifton Lyons and wife, Pauline of Atkinson, NH; a granddaughter, Nancy Lynn of Rumford; six grandsons, Cliff and wife, Yi-Jiun of Lake Oswego, OR, Chris and wife, Gail of Portland, OR, Craig and wife, Holly of Ellsworth, Elmer III and wife, Deborah of Chelmsford, MA, Charles and wife, Beth of Ithaca, NY, and Jay of Maryland Heights, MO; eight great grandchildren, Alexander and Abigail of Lake Oswego, OR, Richard and Meghan of Portland, OR, Hunter, Emily and Mark of Chelmsford, MA, and Bailey of Ithaca, NY.

Avis especially enjoyed being with and taking photos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her four brothers, one sister, and a granddaughter-in-law.

Elizabeth (Betty) Tyler Conant

DELTONA, FL -- Elizabeth (Betty) Tyler Conant, 62, died on January 18, 2002 at her home in Deltona, FL from cancer.

She was born on May 3, 1939 in Lewiston, ME, the daughter of Hollis and Thelma (Crocker) Tyler. She graduated from Dixfield High School in 1957.

She married Bertron Conant in Carthage in September 1957.

Betty worked for the State of New Hampshire for many years. She moved to Floria in 1980 and worked as a medical transcriptionist for area hospitals.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bertron Conant; two sons, Jeffrey of Sanford, FL, and Bertron II of Debary, FL; and six grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in the spring at Robertson cemetery in Weld, ME.

If so desired, gifts may be given in her memory to the American Cancer Society.

Yvette M. Leavitt

RUMFORD -- Yvette M. Leavitt, 74, widow of Harold F. Leavitt of 298 Spruce Street, died Friday, March 15, at her residence.Ê

She was born August 5, 1927 in Rumford, the daughter of Samuel and Roseline Arsenault.Ê A homemaker and resident of this community all of her life, she was a communicant of St. Athanasius St. John Church, attending St. John School.Ê Yvette enjoyed playing bingo "beano", knitting, crocheting and most of all visiting with her family.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Rose and Walter "Butch" Downs, Jr. of Rumford, Nancy and Werner Buehler of Idaho, Maureen and David Giambattista of Norwich, Connecticut, Marlene and Gary "Butch" Philbrick, Jr. of Germantown, Maryland; two sons and their wives, Kenneth and Linda of Roseburg, Oregon, and Thomas and Ronda also of Roseburg, Oregon; two sisters, Florida Tondreau of Gorham, Maine, and Bernadette "Bunny" Arsenault of Westbrook, Maine; two brothers, Brother Gerard Arsenault of Vina, California and Armand Arsenault of Port Angeles, Washington; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy L. Carey

RUMFORD -- Dorothy L. Carey, 90, widow of Edgar James Carey of 25 Wyman Hill Road, died Wednesday March 28 at the Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris shortly after being admitted.

She was born in Rumford January 8, 1911 the daughter of George E. and Mathilda Coulombe Mercier. A resident of this community all of her life, she was a communicant of St. Athanasius St. John Church.

She was educated in local schools and was a member of the Class of 1929 Stephens High School. She had been employed for more than 15 years at the F. W. Woolworth Co. as a clerk.

Mrs. Carey was a member of St. John's Guild, St. John's Ladies of Ste. Anne, Rumford Mother's Club, Town and Country Garden Club, Rumford Community Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the coffee shop at the Rumford Community Hospital for many years.

Survivors include two sons, James and his wife, Claudette of Rumford, and Norman and his wife, Loudine of Ashburnham, MA; a sister, Theresa DuPlisea of Las Vegas, NV; two brothers, Alphonse and Philip Mercier, both of Rumford; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Dr. John P. Greene

AUBURN -- Dr. John P. Greene, 85, died at his home in West Auburn on Saturday, December 8, 2001 surrounded by his family.

He was born December 19, 1915 he was the son of Dr. John and Elizabeth Greene of Rumford, and the grandson of Waldo Pettengill, a prominent figure in the economic development of Rumford in the early 1900's.

He was educated in the Rumford public schools and at Deerfield Academy. He later graduated from Bowdoin College in 19.38 and from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1942.

He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in World War II. Mr. Greene married the former Jane Ahr on May 15, 1943. He established an orthopedic medical practice in Hungtington. West Virginia in the years after the war.

He relocated to Auburn in 1953 and practiced Orthopedic Surgery at Central Maine Medical Center, St. Mary's Hospital and Rumford Community Hospital until his retirement from hospital service in 1989.

He continued his private practice in Lewiston until shortly before his death. Dr. Greene was a longstanding member of the Androscoggin County Medical Association, the Maine Medical Association and the Maine Audobon Society. He served on the Board of Directors of the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA from 1964 to 1981, and was president of the board from 1979-1981.

A man is defined by his passions: John Greene, his entire life, was a dedicated and superb athlete who loved mountain climbing, skiing, volleyball, tennis, squash, and racquetball, and was frequently known to successfully contend with players sometimes decades his junior.

Above all else, he was dedicated to his family. In his later years he traveled extensively with his wife, Jane, to every continent. An avid gardener, Dr. Greene also tended to horses and sheered sheep for many years. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Community Little Theater in Auburn and the Maine State Music Theater in Brunswick.

He is survived by his wife, Jane, and five daughters, Valerie Greene of Scituate, MA, Betsey Rode of Montpelier, VT, Patricia Greene of Auburn, Holly Greene of Brunswick, and Katherine Greene of Scituate, MA; and six grandchildren, John Fletcher Greene, Jillian Greene Kenny, Hannah Greene, Nicholas Crane, Dana Crane, and Margaret McKenna.

Dr. Greene was predeceased by his son, John Ahr Greene, in 1978.

A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 15 at the West Auburn Congregational Church on West Auburn Road. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the John P. Greene Memorial Fund, YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston, 62 Turner St., Auburn, ME 04210.

Arrangements under the direction of Lynch Brothers Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel.

Elaine Faye Dolloff

MEXICO -- Elaine Faye Dolloff, 65, of 54 Howard Street, died Friday March 30 at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

She was born August 5, 1935 in Rumford, the daughter of Mary Walker. She was educated in local schools, graduating from Mexico High School.

A resident of this community all of her life, she was employed as a clerk at the Dollar Depot in Rumford.

She loved her family and enjoyed yard sales, traveling, moose watching and beano.

Survivors include, her companion, Ted Brown of Mexico; a daughter, Lori Gallant and her companion, James Blanchard of Mexico; two sons, Michael Maillett of Boston, and Mark and his wife, Debbie Gallant of Lewiston; three brothers, Lee Walker of Mexico, Bruce Walker of West Lebanon, and Reggie Sweatt of Stoneham; a half sister, Lea Walker of Rumford; and six grandchildren.

Andrew Carlton Vaden

SELMA, ALABAMA -- Andrew Carlton Vaden, 91, of Marion, a native of Tennessee, died February 21, 2001 at the Baptist Hospital in Selma, Alabama.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 24, 2001 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Selma with Father Carroll Plourde officiating. Interment was it Fort Mitchell in Seale, Alabama on February 26, with Kirk Funeral Service directing.

Pallbearers for the service were Kirtley Brown, James Vaden, John Vaden, Paul Robitaille, Richard Blevins, and Robert Looney.

He is survived by his spouse of 56 years, Geraldine Lessard Vaden, of Marion (a 1938 Stephens High School, Rumford graduate); and daughter, Dr. Mary Frances Vaden, of Wentzville, Missouri; a granddaughter, Danielle Pierson, and a grandson, Matthew Pierson, both of Wentzville, Missouri; a brother, Judson Vaden, and his spouse Elizabeth, of Halls, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Carlton completed his high school education in May of 1929. He attended the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) during the early 1930s, while working his way through college. After graduation, he taught in the Lauderdale County School System and was principal of Central Elementary School.

He received his ROTC Commission from the University of Tennessee, becoming a combat infantry officer in WWII. During the Normandy campaign, he was wounded and spent time in three European hospitals before returning to the United States, where he was transferred from Halloran General Hospital in New. York to the Northington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Following retirement from the service in April of 1946, he earned a Master's Degree in Economics and a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree, both from the University of Alabama.

He practiced law in Selma, 1950-1955; taught at Marion Military Institute, 1955-1975; and practiced law in Marion, 1975-2000. In July of 2000, Colonel Vaden received a Citation, commemorating his membership in the Alabama State Bar for 50 years.

He was a Life Member of the VFW Post #5104, a member of the Elks Selma Lodge #167, and a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Selma, Alabama.

Ruth C. Boucher

MEXICO -- Ruth C. Boucher, 71, widow of William Boucher of 82 Roxbury Rd., died Saturday, December 8, 2001 in the emergency room of the Rumford Community Hospital.

She was born February 25, 1930 in Rumford, the daughter of Edward and Estelle Roy Carey. She was educated in local schools graduating from Mexico High School in the Class of 1949.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Mexico.

She had been employed at the Oxford Paper Company in the shipping department.

Mrs. Boucher loved her children and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed cooking and bird watching.

Survivors include two daughters, Leanne Cochran and her companion, Jim Bligh, and Wendy Boucher and her companion, Keith Matthews, all of Mexico; a son, Peter and his wife, Amy of Sanford; four grandchildren, Joshua, Cory and Troy Cochran, and Noah Boucher; two sisters, Mrs. Sylvio (Helena) Martin and Mrs. Wilbur (Priscilla) Draper, all of Rumford; a brother, Robert Carey of Nevada; a half brother, Ted Carey of Scarborough; and her companion, Charles Newell of Mexico.

She was predeceased by a sister, Bernice Robar, and two brothers, Pat and Dennis Carey.
