William F. Cushing, Sr.

BETHEL -- William F. Cushing, Sr., 70 died Friday December 28, 2001 in Milton Plantation. He was a resident of Route 232 in Bethel and had lived in the area all of his life

Born in Andover, Maine on August 28, 1931, he was the son of Edgar and Florena (Cole) Cushing. He was a graduate of Telstar High School in 1979.

He was a Corporal in the US Army during the Korean War. He worked for many saw mills in the area and then for Gould Academy in the Maintenance Department and then for the U.S. Forest Service maintaining U.S. Forest Service facilities and campgrounds until his retirement in 1993.

Mr. Cushing was a former member of the Bethel VFW and he loved the outdoors and his family and his cat "Romeo".

He was married in Rumford on November 25, 1955 to Frances Josephine Bailey who survives of Bethel, Maine. Other survivors include a daughter, Brenda and her husband, Major Chester Curtis, Jr. USAF of Springfield, VA; one son, William E. Cushing and his wife, Debbie of Bethel; two grandsons, Adam Curtis and Andrew Curtis of Springfield, VA; two sisters, Lorena Simmons of Andover and Thelma Remington of Bethel; and a brother, Edgar Cushing and his wife, Lila of Hancock.

Robert G. Mildram

WELLS -- Robert G. Mildram, 84, a resident of the Branch Road, passed away quietly in his sleep at his residence on August 7, 2002.

Mr. Mildram was born December 14, 1917 in Wells, a son of Charles and Josie Bridges Mildram. He was a 1934 graduate of Wells High School.

After graduation, he moved to Rumford and began working at the Boise Cascade paper mill there.

He entered the US Navy during WW II and served as a gunners mate second class in the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres, and participated in the Murmansk Run to Russia.

After the war, he returned to Rumford and the Boise Cascade Mill, retiring in 1983 after a total of 42 years with the company. He returned to Wells after retirement and has worked at the Wells Transfer Station.

He was a member of the High Pine Baptist Church in Wells, First Baptist Church in Rumford, the Snow Shoe Club in Rumford, the Trailblazers Club and Ocean Lodge 142, both in Wells.

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Janice Mildram of Wells; two sons, Robert Mildram, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK, and Edward McCaffrey of Biddeford; seven daughters, Deborah Allen of Yukon OK, Mrs. Alex Corbitt of Yukon OK, Marguerite Bradley of Mexico, ME, Shirley St. Cyr of Howland, Linda Merrill of Rumford, Molly McCaffrey of Portland and Barbara Slowik of Kennebunk; a brother, Walter Mildram of San Jose, CA; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Terry Lee Wilson

GREENWOOD -- Terry Lee Wilson, 50, of Greenwood, died Friday evening, October 25, 2002 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

He was born in Rumford on January 29, 1952, the son of Alden and Irene (Conner) Wilson. He attended the Bethel schools, graduating from Telstar Regional High School in 1971. He remained living in Greenwood throughout his life raising his family.

He worked in the woods for several years for his brother Stanley and later for Ira Gammon, before opening his own business, Wilson's Garage and Auto Body, which he ran for several years. He was well known for being a very talented mechanic and auto body man.

In the past, his favorite hobby was drag racing his 1969 Camaro "Rambunctious", at Oxford Plains Dragway and New England Dragway. He was also an avid sports fan of Nascar racing, the Red Sox and the Patriots, traveling to Boston last winter with friends for the Patriots Superbowl Celebration. He also loved music, attending many concerts over the years with family and friends, his favorite being the Rolling Stones.

He was an animal lover, he owned a horse while growing up, loving to ride Cocoa. He also loved his dogs, Rascal and Rosie and their many puppies which Gomer is one of.

He especially loved his children, family and many friends with whom he really enjoyed spending time with. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by a daughter, Briana Wilson and Nathan Brown of Greenwood; three sons, Brett, Bryan and Brady Wilson, all of Bethel; two grandsons, Trevor and Scott of Fairbanks, Alaska; one brother, Dennis A. and his wife, Rita Wilson of Greenwood; a sister, Gloria Wilson of Bethel; a sister in-law, Ester Wilson of Bethel; several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Travis L. Buck; and a brother, Stanley Wilson.

Linwood J. "Mac" McInnis

DIXFIELD -- Linwood J. "Mac" McInnis, 72, of Dixfield, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Rumford, the son of Laughlin and Faye (Mitchell) McInnis. He attended local schools.

Mr. McInnis was a veteran, having served in the Civil Air Patrol and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, earning two battle stars. He was a member of the Rumford VFW and the Rumford American Legion.

He married Julie Roy of Rumford in 1953. He was co-owner of the K&M Bus Line in Rumford in the 50's and worked at Taylor Buick on Hancock Street in Rumford. He and his wife moved to Long Island, NY in 1963, residing at Centereach, NY for 34 years.

He retired as manager of the shipping department of Technimetal Precision Instruments in 1995. He then fulfilled his wish of returning to Maine after his retirement.

His hobbies were flyfishing, hiking, berrypicking, rock knocking, cribbage and jigsaw puzzle making. His favorite place on earth was the top of White Cap Mountain and his favorite times were spent in the loving company of his family.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Julie, of Dixfield; his son, Michael McInnis and his wife, Judy of Mauldin, SC; his daughters: Vicky Fantry and her husband, Jerry of Centereach, NY, and Marcia Boulanger and her husband, Gary of Holbrook, NY; eight grandchildren, Jason, Marisa, and Ryan Fantry; Michelle and Jeffrey McInnis, and Michael, Steven and Jessica Boulanger; a sister, Teresa Picard of Rumford; a brother, Ellis McInnis of North Tonawanda, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a brother, Leon McInnis; and a sister, Margaret McInnis.

Public memorial visitation at the Wiles Funeral Home, 30 Weld St., Dixfield, Friday noon until the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m. Following services, all are welcome to attend a reception at the home of Chris and Tami Roy, 74 Isthmus Rd., Rumford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice PO Box M Abbott Plaza Rumford, Me. 04276 or to St. Jude Children's Hospital Memorial Program 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-9956. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

Kathryn "Katie" Averill

DIXFIELD -- Kathryn "Katie" T. Averill, 72, of Dixfield, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday July 3, 2003 with her family by her side.

She was born April 7, 1931, the daughter of the late Hollis and Thelma (Crocker) Tyler. She was educated in Dixfield schools and graduated from Dixfield High School, Class of 1949. She continued her education and earned her R.N. by taking nurses training at Rumford Hospital; Concord State Hospital, Concord, NH; and Providence, Rhode Island.

She worked 10 years at Memorial Hospital in Belle Glade, Florida and another 10 years at the clinic in West Palm Beach, Florida. She also worked at the Cozy Inn at Rumford and the Dixfield Nursing Home. She retired from Boise Cascade in 1996.

On Sept. 11, 1951, she married Lester Averill. She was a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church. Gardening, reading and volunteering were among her most treasured interests.

She is survived by her husband, Lester, of Dixfield; two sons: Lester N. Averill III and his wife, Karen of Philadalphia, PA; David H. Averill and his wife, Sandy of Rochester, NH; two grandsons: Ben and Jake Averill of Rochester, NH; three sisters: Kathy Cushman of Wiscasset; Holly Cochran of Hawaii and Joy Pierce of Dixfield; two brothers; Hollis Tyler of Wilton and Wallis Tyler of Weld; an uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth T. Conant.

Arthur E. Abbott

NORWAY -- Arthur E. Abbott, 77, died Friday, August 22, 2003 at Stephen's Memorial Hospital, Norway, Maine. He had resided on Hill Street, So. Paris, Me. the past 10 years and was formerly of Dover, N.H. and Rumford, Me.

He was born in Rumford, Me. June 28, 1926, a son of Clyde and Myrtle (Glover) Abbott, and had attended Rumford schools. During WW-II he served as a T-5, US Army 10th Corps from 1941-1946 including the So. Pacific and Philippines.

Mr Abbott was employed as a construction carpenter all his life working with many companies doing work at Air Force Bases all over the country before going to Civil Engineering at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire. He also worked at different paper companies and schools with companies during construction until retirement in 1989.

He was a Life Member of Floyd Harlow VFW Post # 9787, So. Paris; Member So. Paris American Legion Post #72; Life Member Portsmouth N.H. Chapter # 4, DAV; Member of the North American Hunting Club; and he loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his son Larry Abbott of Hampton, N.H.; a granddaughter Jessica Lynn Abbott of Auburn, Me.; and was predeceased by an infant son Greg Abbott in 1955, a sister Eris Thurlow in 2000, and a brother-in-law Walter Thurlow in 1999

Ricky Lee Carrier

PORTLAND -- Ricky Lee Carrier, 51, died on December 17, 2003 at the Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was a resident of Waldo Street In Rumford.

Born in Brookville, PA, he was the son of Max and Shirley (Jursak) Carrier. He was a graduate of Brookville High School in Brookville, PA. He served in the U.S. Marine Corpl. He worked for Bancroft Contracting Company of South Paris as a Class A Welder.

Ricky was a very big Dale Earnhardt and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He enjoyed camping and fishing. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Survivors include his mother, Shirley of Pennsylvania; a brother, Frank Carrier of Brookville PA; a sister, Cindy Carrier of Moore, OK; four sons, Max Carrier of Asheboro, NC, Kevin Carrier of Jewett City, CT, Shane and Ryan Carrier of Groton of Groton, CT; a daughter, Misty Ross of Westerly, RI; his fiancˇ, Bonnie Merchant of Rumford; two step sons, John Merchant, Jr. and his companion, Heather Manzer of Dixfield, and Randy Merchant and his wife, Heather of Rumford; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father, Max.

Funeral will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Harriet Coombs Oldham

WESTFORD, MA -- Harriet Coombs Oldham, 76, died on March 11, 2004 at her daughter Julie Silton's home in Westford, MA.

She was born to Ellen Trufant and George Coombs in Topsham, ME on Jan. 23, 1928. The family later moved to Solon, ME where Harriet graduated from Solon High School. She went on to school at Farmington State Teacher's College, graduating in 1950.

She taught briefly at Canton Elementary where she also coached basketball and went on to teach at Peru Elementary, teaching 4th grade there for over 20 years. She also earned masters degrees both in psychology and elementary education.

She married John Bryant Oldham of Rumford on July 3, 1949 in Solon, ME and settled into the home that they built together on Worthley Pond where they raised their three daughters.

Upon retiring from teaching, Harriet enjoyed community life by quilting with the Ladies of the Lake, being active as a member of the Dixfield Congregational Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Canton Fish and Game, and a local square dancing club.

Most of all, Harriet enjoyed her children and grandchildren and traveling the country with her husband, often on the back of his motorcycle. During the years, Harriet and John traveled to every state in the union; 49 on motorcycle and finally flying to Hawaii. They were happily married for 46 years until John passed away in September of 1995.

Harriet Oldham is survived by two sisters, Connie Hopkins and her husband, Don of Solon, ME, Shirley Jordan of Sun City, FL, and a brother, Richard Coombs and his wife, Nancy of Saco. An older sister, Lois Sicket, recently passed away.

Harriet is also survived by her three daughters, Dr. Sheridan Oldham and her husband, Ernest Gilbert of Waterville, Julie Silton of Westford, MA, and Nancy O. DeMilner of Peru, ME. Harriet has six grandchildren, David Silton and his wife Sherry and Aaron Silton, both marines, Rachel Silton, Shayna Silton, Kyle DeMilner and his wife, Chrissy, and Max DeMilner; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Mildred Oldham.

She will be missed by her family and many friends.
