George E. Averill, Sr.

BOSTON, MA -- George E. Averill, Sr., 70, of Carthage, died on May 31, 2004 at a Boston hospital.

He was born in Jay, Feb. 13, 1934, a son of Lester and Rachel (Hiltz) Averill. He received his education in local schools.

On Nov. 14, 1958, he married Glennis Brown in Carthage.

Mr. Averill was a veteran, having served in the United States Army and had been a woodsman for many years.

He was a member of the Dixfield American Legion and Le Paresseux Snowshoe Club of Rumford.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glennis of Carthage; his children, George Averill, Jr. and his companion, Timia Seager of Carthage, Jackie Barton and her husband, Keller of Peru, Barry Averill and his wife, Pam of Carthage, Leann Bradbury and her husband, Danny of Carthage, Claude Averill and his wife, Carol of Dixfield, and Jillette Tyler and her husband, Daryl of Canton; two brothers, Lester Averill of Dixfield, and Lynn T. Averill and his wife, Evelyn of Dixfield; a sister, Claudia Emery of Dixfield; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Pauline; and a sister, Betty Curtis.

Paul W. Fuller, Jr.

HERTFORD -- Paul W. Fuller, Jr., 69, of Hertford, died on August 2, 2004, in Albemarle Hospital.

Born in Rumford, ME, he was the son of the late Paul W. and Lynda Barnett Fuller. He retired after 23 years as a tech sergeant in the U.S. Air Force where he was an inspector, an aerospace ground equipment repair tech and ground safety officer with the 48th Fighter Interceptor Squadron.

He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for ground safety non-commissioned officer. After service he worked as a maintenance supervisor at the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Regional Center.

Fuller graduated from Stephens High School Class of 1954 in Rumford and from Thomas Nelson Community College. He was a member and Deacon at Chapel On The Sound, the Holiday Island Property Owner's Association and was active in the Guardian Ad Litum Program. In 1984, he was awarded the Leonard Znimer Memorial Award.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen Bridget Ann McKenna Fuller; two sons and their wives, Paul W. Fuller, III and Nicola of Tabb, VA and Gary Patrick Fuller and Mary of Newport News, VA; three grandchildren, Lotan Kritchman, Timna Kritchman and Meredith Hughes; two sisters and their husbands, Alice and Bruce Clark of Dixfield, ME, and Carol and Raymond Doyen of Hertford; three brothers and their wives, Earl and Doris Fuller of Peru, ME, Arthur and Jennifer Fuller of Greenville, SC and Roger Fuller of Farmington, ME; two sisters-in-law, Catalina Fuller of Rumford and Eileen Naughton and husband, Patrick of Newborough, England; numerous nieces and nephews in America and England; and a host of friends.

He will be sorely missed by Doggie Boy, Coup, Mommie Babe, Big Foot, Little Bit, Rocky and Georgie Babe.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jim Fuller.

Lucien John "Jack" Cayer

SPOKANE, WA -- Lucien John "Jack" Cayer, 79 passed into eternal peace with smile on his face and his loving children at his side on Oct. 21, 2004 at the Spokane VA Hospital.

Sgt. Major Cayer (retired) was born in Rumford, ME on Sept. 18, 1925 to French immigrants to the United States.

He became an American hero and high decorated career soldier with a lengthy list of awards for courage and excellence that include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.

He was a man who rarely discussed his involvement in the major battle of WWII and Korea or his exemplary service after that to our country throughout the world, again and again.

However, three examples offer a glimpse of his character and many personal achievements: earning the Silver Star by dragging a fellow soldier a half mile to safety while both of his own legs were shot; assisting in the liberation of German concentration camp survivors and forcing, at gunpoint, a German military soldier to exchange his new boots for the rags of a freed Jewish survivor; and transversing a telephone line, hand over hand, across a flooding river to visit his dying father.

Sgt. Major Cayer was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 55 years, Jessie Cayer; and his survived by his loving children: Lucien Cayer II, Mary Cayer and Lee Cayer, all of Spokane.

Edna T. Gallant

GARDNER, MA -- Edna T. Gallant, 76, of Gardner, MA, passed away on Jan. 12, 2005 at the Wachusett Manor Nursing Home following an illness.

She was born in Rumford, ME on Jan. 6, 1929, a daughter to the late Oliver and Leona (Gallant) Thibodeau.

Edna was a graduate of Stephens High School Class of 1948 in Rumford before moving to Gardner in 1955.

Mrs. Gallant worked for the Gardner school system asa dietary aide for many years before her retirement.

She liked to travel, walk, knit, crochet and most of all spend time with her family.

Mrs. Gallant was also a member of Sacred Heart Church of Gardner.

She is survived by two sons, Donald J. Gallant of Gardner, and David J. Gallant of Mount Dora, FL; three grandchildren, Bryan J. and Matthew J. Gallant of Baldwinville, and Lisa M. Sheehan of Yarmouth; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Mason Sheehan of Yarmouth; and a sister, Georgette Thebault of Westford, VT.

Besides her parents, Edna is predeceased by her husband, James J. Gallant, Jr., who passed away in 1987; a son, Daniel J. Gallant, who passed away in 1978; and a grandson, Daniel B. LaShomb.

Donald B. Carver, Sr.

MEXICO - Donald B. Carver, Sr., 70, of Swift River Road, passed away Sunday evening December 4, 2005 at the Rumford Hospital after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 18, 1935 in Rumford, a son of Harry and Clyda (Barry) Carver. He lived in the Mexico community most of his life. He was educated in the Mexico school system and graduated from Mexico High School Class of 1953.

He was a veteran of the US Army having served from 1953 - 1956. He was a member of the American Legion.

Donald was the State of Maine Representative of the Ostomy Association and President of the local chapter.

Donald was an avid and talented woodworker and gardener, who touched many peoples' lives with the things he built and grew from his garden.

Donald worked at the Rumford Paper Mill for 36 years, retiring from the maintenance department on January 3, 1994.

Donald was a passionate family man who took great care and pride in raising his five children and 13 grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Mildred (Hebert) Carver of 51 years, whom he married in 1954; two sons, Donald B. Carver, Jr. and wife, Penny of Peru, and Raymond G. Carver and wife, Ann of Mexico; three daughters, Lisa Saxe and husband, Matthew of Columbia City, Oregon, Sarah Bolduc and husband, Noel of Mexico, and Nora Stanley and husband, Kevin of Peru; two sisters, Alice Gallant of Worcester, MA, and Barbara Naillis of Meridan, CT; three brothers, Harry Carver, Sr. and wife, Alice of Mexico, Harold Carver of Bethel, and Raymond Carver of Mexico; 13 grandchildren, Brandon Carver, Bryce Carver, Garret Carver, Carly Saxe, Kyle Saxe, Brian Saxe, Connor "Waldo" Saxe, Ryan Knapp, Serena Knapp, Curtis Bolduc, Hanna Stanley, Mitchell Stanley and Wyatt Carver; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Estelle Hobson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Interment will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Alpha I Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave., Suite 302, Miami, FL 33133-9836.

Joy R. Schoefmann

KEENE, NH - Joy R. Schoefmann, 47, of Keene, NH, died January 19, 2006 at the Cheshire Medical Center after a long battle with cancer.

Joy was born in Rumford, ME in 1958, the daughter of Robert and June (Ellis) Nisbet. After her graduation from Rumford High School in 1976, she moved to Keene and worked for MPB for a number of years where she met her future husband, Bob.

She and Bob married and it soon became clear that the real passion in Joy's life was her family. She loved children and after the birth of her first child, she established a small child-care practice in her home. She later went on to become the Child Care Coordinator for Lady of America in Keene.

Joy will be most remembered by many people as a committed volunteer in Keene. She was worked tirelessly for the Cub Scouts as Den Leader, Committee Chair, and other capacities, always bringing a spark of fun into whatever needed to be done.

The boys who passed through Pack 16 in those years will not soon forget Joy leading the cheers at pack meetings or doing the Chicken at Camp Carpenter. She also worked hard with the PTA at the Wheelock School, and after her diagnosis with cancer five years ago, brought the same level of energy and passion to the local Relay for Life fundraising effort.

Joy and Bob enjoyed many activities together which also included participating in Auto Rallies in the semi-competitive division of the Sports Car Club of America.

She is survived by her sons, Ian, Duncan, and William Schoefmann of Keene. She also leaves behind her brothers and sisters, Robert Nisbet, Holly LeCours, Mr. and Mrs. Berl Nisbet of Maine, Cynthia Nisbet of Arizona, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Nisbet of Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews, Jennie-Mae, Jon, Mary, Derrick, Tom, Denis, Melissa, Celia, Julie, great nephews Coyote and Asher. She was pre-deceased just one year ago by her husband, Robert Schoefmann.

Funeral services will be held for Mrs. Schoefmann on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Pilgrim Pines Center, West Swanzey, NH Rev. Paul Cullity will officiate. Friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH.

Spring burial will take place in the family lot in Chesterfield West Cemetery, Chesterfield, NH

The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Joy's memory to the Ian and Duncan Schoefmann Trust. Contributions may be sent to Edward Jones 225 Main St., Brattleboro, VT 05301

Geneva M. Ziko

RUMFORD - Geneva M. Ziko, 82, of Hancock Street, Rumford, died on April 30, 2006 at the Rumford Hospital.

She was born in Rumford on Dec. 1, 1923, a daughter of Stephen and Mary (Casey) McPhee. She graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford Class of 1941.

Geneva was a telephone operator in Rumford for several years prior to closing of the Rumford Office and then over 18 years at the Rumford High School Cafeteria as a clerk until retirement in 1983.

She was a Communicant of St. Athanasius-St John Church where she was formerly active as a C.C.D. Teacher and Eucharistic Minister.

She was married in Rumford on Oct. 13, 1947 to the late Edward "Ted" Ziko, who died in Rumford on Feb. 11, 2005.

Survivors include four sons, Edward A. Ziko and wife, Kathryn of Mexico, Thomas Ziko and wife, Barbara of Raleigh, NC, Joseph Ziko and wife, Connie of Coventry, CT, and Timothy Ziko and wife, Mary of Simsbury, CT; a daughter-in-law, Cecilia Ziko of Portland;and eight grandchildren, Alexander, Rebecca, Suzanna, Rachel, Margaret, Ben, Laura and Kate; three sisters, Barbara Fontaine of Pine Island, FL and Mexico, ME, Rita Wyman and husband, John of Rumford, and Theresa Vatalaro of Rumford.

She was predeceased by a son, Walter; two brothers, Donald and Stephen McPhee; and a sister, Mary Sciaraffa.

At her request, there are no public calling hours but friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at St. Athanasius-St. John Church, Rumford. Interment at St. John Cemetery, Rumford. Those who desire, please contribute to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, 100 Weld St., Suite B, Dixfield, ME 04224 in her memory.

Viola M. Arsenault

RUMFORD - Viola M Arsenault, 81, of Spruce St. died on May 4, 2006 at her residence.

She was born in Rumford on September 29, 1924, a daughter of Albert J. and Denise (Richard) Melanson. Viola was educated in Rumford schools and had lived locally all of her life.

On April 2, 1945, she married Arthur J. Arsenault. He passed away on November 12, 1999.

For many years, she was employed as a cashier at Sampson's Supermarket in Rumford.

Viola was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church. She enjoyed working in her many flower gardens and playing cribbage with her wide circle of friends.

Viola was a very accomplished knitter and donated many pairs of mittens and scarf's to the Green Church at Christmas. She enjoyed playing the organ and singing, as it was her belief that it gave Glory to God. Some of her best times in her life were spent along the Maine coast, and her many family trips to Hermit Island at Small Point Beach.

Viola's life was centered around her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her beloved Boston Terrier "Maggie," who now resides in Missouri; and she was also very close to her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by a son, Dennis J. Arsenault and wife, Dottie of Rumford; a daughter, Christine A. Seaman of Wright City, MO; three sisters, Ida Lyons of Sanford, Bella Stone of Rumford, and Mary Patrick of Fayetteville, NY; four brothers, Leo Melanson of Rumford, Jack Melanson and wife, Jackie of Mexico, Albert "Chinkey" Melanson and wife, Eliz of Germany, and Richard "Dick" Melanson and wife. Julie of Dixfield; six grandchildren, Jason Arsenault US Navy and wife, Stephanie, Christopher Arsenault and wife, Gaye, Kyle Arsenault US Marine Corp, Craig Arsenault US Army, Tabetha LaMora and husband, Matthew, and Shane Burgum; and four great-grandchildren, Valor, Noah, Skylar, and Gabby.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur J. Arsenault; two brothers, George Melanson and Omer Melanson; a granddaughter, April Seaman; and a great-grandson, Stephen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Wednesday May 10, 2006 at St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in her memory to the St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church Building Fund 126 Maine Ave. Rumford, ME 04276.
