Joseph 'Butsy' Gallant

AUBURN - Joseph "Butsy" Gallant, 77, formerly of Somerset Street Rumford, died on February 23, 2009 at the Hospice House in Auburn.

He was born in Rumford on July 19, 1931, a son of George and Ida (Arsenault) Gallant. Butsy was educated in Rumford schools.

He served two years in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Boise Cascade Paper Mill.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius & St. John Catholic Church and St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Butsy was an avid sports fan and in his youth, held the Maine State Welterweight Boxing Championship Title. He also loved to play cribbage.

The family would like to thank the staff at Victorian Villa and the Hospice House for the wonderful care given to Joe.

Surviving are his daughter, Lea Walker of Mexico; two sons, Bruce Walker and wife, Kris of Lebanon, and Lee Walker and wife, Judy of Rumford; three sisters, Rita Perry, Doris Gallant of Rumford, and Ida Luther and husband, Charles of Roxbury; a brother, John Gallant of Ellenton, FL; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a long time companion, Mary Walker; five brothers, Alfred, George, Edward, Clarence, and Ernest Gallant, and a granddaughter, Lisa Walker.

Elden Clayton Bennett

NEWRY - Elden Clayton Bennett, 80, of Newry, died on March 30, 2009 in Norway.

He was born in Newry on Nov. 6, 1928, the son of Roy and Janet (Enman) Bennett. He was educated in local schools. He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1950 serving during the Korean War, being discharged on December 10, 1953.

He married the former Sharon Gallant on December 13, 1953 and they had two children, Gordon Bennett of Athens, New York and Kitty Leets of Milton, NH. Elden had worked as a civil engineer most of his working career with the U.S. Air Force at Plattsburg New York, retiring in 1988.

Elden was very proud of his Navy days and service to America was very important to him. He was an avid hunter in his younger days, hunting white tail deer and grouse. In his later years he did more bird watching. Elden was known around town as a gentle man.

Besides his children, he is survived by one brother, Donald Bennett of Bethel; one sister, Amy Jones of Berlin, NH; and three grandchildren, Jason Leets, Amanda Leets and John Leets.

Graveside services will be held at the Head of Tides cemetery in Newry on May 16 at 3 p.m.

Memorials in Elden's memory are suggested to the Bethel Historical Society, P.O. Box 12, Bethel, Maine 04217-0012.

Joy E. Frost

LEWISTON - Joy E. Frost, 52, of Rumford, died on July 25, 2009 at the Central Maine Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loving family and friends at the time of her passing.She was born in Fall River, MA on Oct. 31, 1956, daughter of Donald and Wilma (Record) Neilson. She attended Mexico High School.Joy was employed as a CNA for part of her life, and was also a wonderful care giver to her mother-in-law, Emily Frost, in the time of her illness.She was married to Brian Frost, her best friend and love of her life, in September of 1982. Joy was an avid reader and loved to knit. But most of all, she loved her "babies," her beloved Papillon dogs, Miko and Molly. She is survived by her husband, Brian of Rumford; two step-children, Kevin Frost of South Paris, and Shannon Frost and three granddaughters, all of Freeberg, IL; two brothers, Neils Neilson of Bangor and Steven Neilson, wife, Deborah and two daughters of Johnson City, TN; two nieces, Hannah and Sierra; a nephew, Trevor; and her very special friends and caregivers, Mary Beth; and Linda Wheeler.A celebration of her life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Dixfield Congregational Church (Church on the Hill).

Dr. Katherine Bray-Strickland

FARMVILLE, NC - Dr. Katherine Bray-Strickland, 27, passed away at home on February 10, 2010 with her family after a five-year struggle with cancer.

Katherine grew up in Maine and was a 1996 graduate of Peru Elementary School. She later moved to Greenville, NC where she graduated from J.H. Rose High School in 2000.

In 2004, she graduated from the University of North Carolina-Asheville earning a BS in Biology. In 2009 she graduated from the Brody School of Medicine where she was honored by her classmates for her courage and dedication to family medicine.

She was serving as a Family Medicine Resident at East Carolina University.

She is survived by her loving husband, David; parents, Paul and Dr. Emily Bray of New Bern; father and mother-in-law, Mike and Brenda Strickland of Greenville; a sister, Josie Bray, of New York City; and a sister in law, Tracy Tousey, of Jacksonville, FL.

Gary A. Ames

CRESTWOOD, KY - Gary A. Ames, 58, of Crestwood, KY, passed away on March 15, 2010.

He was a member of the Oldham Woods Church of Christ, and was retired from Kroger. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlton and Frances Ames.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Linda; two daughters, Bethani Johnson (David); and Melissa McGruder (Mac); four brothers, Tommy, Ricky, Steve, and Dennis Ames; one sister, Yvonne Hemingway (Ronnie); and four beloved grandchildren, Emily, Chris, Tabby, and Murphy.

Minnie M. Akers

ANDOVER - Minnie M. Akers, 89, died on May 12, 2010, at her residence in Andover, with her loving family by her side.

She was born July 19, 1920 in Andover, the daughter of William Clifford and Irma (Cutting) Pawe. Her mother died when she was five years old and she was raised by her Aunt and Uncle Lee and Rena Falkenham throughout her school years in Andover.

She was married in South Paris in 1938 to Raymond I. Akers, who died in Andover, on June 3, 1974. They lived in Andover and spent time at Roxbury Pond and their log cabin. Later, they lived in Crystal Beach, FL happily for many winters.

Minnie was a member of the Andover Congregational Church, the Pythian Sisters, and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.

She was a beautiful lady who cherished her family and friends and will be sadly missed.

She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Swan and husband, William of Andover, Linda Percival and husband, John of Andover, Julia Gribbin and husband, Tim of Solebury, PA and Andover, and Florida daughter Linda Creighton; seven granddaughters, Kaye Moren, Karen Swan, Stephanie Percival, Jennifer Mendenhall, Angela Percival, Brigid and Brenna Gribbin; for four great-grandchildren, Erica and Jeremy Moren, Carson McKay, Sophia Percival.

Donald R. Cummings

RUMFORD -- Donald R. Cummings, 82, died on December 31, 2002 at the Rumford Hospital surrounded by his family. He was a resident of Highland Terrace in Mexico, ME.

Born on Sunnymead Farm in Oxford, ME, he was the son of Arthur and Nettie (Richards) Cummings. He was a graduate of Oxford High School.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1941 to 1946 as a Master Sergeant with the 36th Fighter Squadron. He worked for George Cummings Car Dealership and Joys Sales and Service until his retirement in 1981.

Mr. Cummings loved his farm and spent many hours in his wood lot with his four wheeler and ski doo. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children. For over 52 years he enjoyed his summer home at Worthley Pond. He loved all sports and especially loved going to his grandchildren's games.

He was one of the founders of Mexico Senior Housing Corporation and served as President for many years. He served time on the Mexico Water District and Budget Committee. He was one of the founders and a charter member of the Mexico Lion's Club.

He was also a 59-year member and past Master of Blazing Star Lodge 30 AF & AM Masonic Lodge. He was well known for his community service. He enjoyed helping his children raise horses and cows in his back fields.

He was married on June 6, 1945 in Victoria, Texas to Anita Richardson, who survives of Mexico. Other survivors include his son, Donald and his wife, Sharon Cummings of Mexico; three daughters, Cindy Dumas and her husband, Paul of Mexico, Pamela Stinson and her husband, Mark of Monmouth, and Mary Rumley and her husband, Gary of Rumford Point; his grandchildren, Aaron Cummings and his wife, Tracey of Mexico, Sarah Cummings of Mexico, Jarrod and Maia Dumas of Mexico, Jonathon and Katheryne Stinson of Monmouth, Kaylee and Gary Rumley, Jr. of Rumford Point; and two great grandchildren, Samantha and Katelyn Cummings of Mexico.

Joan M. Weinburg

ANDOVER -- Joan. M. Weinburg, 71, entered into eternal rest on March 25, 2003 in Elk-Grove, CA, surrounded by her devoted daughter and son-in-law.

Joan was born in Rockland, MA on Jan. 18, 1932 to Grace and Fletcher Beauregard. She lived her early years in Rockland and her adult life in the Lynn-Peabody area of Massachusetts.

Her great love of Maine led her and her husband to South Arm Road in Andover, ME in 1986. Her beloved husband, Archie S. Weinburg, passed away in Andover in 1987.

Joan was known to share her life with many special pets. She was also fondly known as the "old lady in the little red house with the big St. Bernard." She was not known for living in the little red house or for having a big dog. She was known because her big dog, "Sarge" used to take his naps in the middle of the road. Sarge lived to be 17 years old and was a great source of comfort and joy for Joan.

Other sources of joy for her were her six children and 10 grandchildren, her love for bingo, watching The Price is Right and reading. She is known for being the first one in the car when someone mentions camping.

She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life and her dedication to the geriatric population. Joan worked as a CNA for 55 years and still worked at that profession at the age of 70. She thought it was funny that her patients were younger than she was.

She retired on Dec. 11, 2002 when she was diagnosed as having terminal cancer. Joan will always hold a special place in the hearts of all the lives she touched.

She is survived by her six children, Debbie Donovan and her husband, George Combs of Elk-Gove, CA, Rick Donovan and his wife, Maureen, of South Paris, ME; Janice O'Connell and her fiance, Joe Martin of Lynn, MA, Joanne Mello and her husband, Jimmy of Lynn, MA, Rocky Castellano and his lifelong companion, Betty Gould of Pittsfield, NH, Brenda Castellano and her lifelong companion, Bill McDougall of Mexico, ME; her 10 grandchildren, Gina, Phillip C, Philip G, Nicole, Jade, Brian, Rhana, Michael, Elizabeth and Colbie-Lyn.

Barbara Mae Bernard

VERNON, CT -- Barbara Mae Bernard, 77, of Vernon, CT, died suddenly on June 9, 2003 while visiting family in California.

She was born May 11, 1926 in Warwick, RI, daughter of Philip and Elsie Newmarker.

In 1951, Barbara met and married Howard Bernard in Paris, France. Together they had four children, David, Kenneth (deceased), Leslie, and Nancy. From the late 1950s to the early 1970s, Barbara and her family lived in South Paris, ME.

Barbara was an artist and educator, enjoyed traveling, sailing, skiing, and birding, and loved working in her gardens.

She is survived by her second husband, Philip Doss; step-mother, Dorothy Newmarker; sisters Elinor Newmarker and Marie Cherms; brother-in-law Frank; a son, David Bernard, and daughter-in-law Michelle; daughter Leslie Bernard Glick, and son-in-law Steven; daughter Nancy Bernard; daughter-in-law Anne Hawes; and two grandchildren, Mysha Klus Mason and Kenneth Bernard Glick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to a charity particularly close to Barbara's heart: Heifer International, P.O. Box 8106, Little Rock, AR 72203. A Celebration Memorial of

Barbara's life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 2 p.m., at the McLaughlin Garden in South Paris, ME (743-8820).

Lydia A. Fortin

LEWISTON -- Lydia A. Fortin, 72, of Meadowview Apartments, and formerly of Mexico, died early Wednesday morning July 2 at Central Maine Medical Center with her family at her side.

She was born in Rumford, November 3, 1930 a daughter of Henry O. and Philomene Arsenault. She was educated in Rumford schools and remained a resident of the Rumford-Mexico community prior to moving to Lewiston seven years ago.

She worked as a homemaker all her life as she raised her five children. She was a member of St. Theresa's Church for many years while living in Mexico and was a parishioner at Holy Family while living in Lewiston. She always liked doing a variety of crafts, including sewing, quilting and needlepoint , and watching the QVC channel on T.V. Being a devoted Catholic with a strong faith, she often watched religious television as well. She also enjoyed the family times with her children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters.

She leaves four daughters Joan Marino and husband Mark of Deerfield, NH, Paula Torla and husband David of Hudson, NH, Jane Terenzoni and husband Bryan of Greene, and Lynn Stevens of Dixfield; a son Jeffrey and his wife Connie of Lewiston; five grandchildren Kristin Stevens, Jessica and Aimee Fortin, Adrianna Belskis and Elizabeth Marino; two sisters Florence Blanchard of Peru and Alvine Arsenault of Rumford; three brothers Edward Arsenault and his wife Leanne of Rumford, Armand Arsenault and his wife Bette of Auburn and Gerald Arsenault also of Rumford, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister Anna Sirois and three brothers Euclide, Melvin and Lionel.
