Joseph "Red" G.R. Lessard

SOUTH PORTLAND -- Joseph "Red" G.R. Lessard, 70 of Ocean Avenue So. Portland died unexpectedly at his residence.

He was born September 16, 1932 in Rumford, the son of Ferdinand and Bernadette Rouillard Lessard. A resident of the greater Rumford area most of his life, he graduated from Stephens High School in the Class of 1951. Mr. Lessard was a communicant of the Holy Cross Church in South Portland.

A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served in the U. S. Air Force in Korea as an A2c. He was a member of the Robert Shand Post 1641 VFW and the Napoleon Ouellette Post 24 American Legion.

He loved his four nieces and their children dearly. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and taught hunting safety courses. As a gunsmith, he reloaded cartridges. He was also a member of the Greater Rumford Community Center.

Survivors include a brother, Joseph E. Norman Lessard of Carrabassett Valley; four nieces, Leslie Lampert of Old Orchard Beach, Susan Raftice and Rachel Lessard, both of South Portland, and Mary Ellen BaRoss of Freeport; three great nieces, Kayla, Elizabeth and Emma Raftice; and two great nephews, Benjamin and Samuel Raftice.

Adolph J. Cyr

MEXICO -- Adolph J. Cyr, 81, of 313 River Rd. died on May 28, 2003 at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

He was born November 23, 1922 in New Richmond, P.Q., the son of Adelard and Rosehilda Dee Cyr. He was educated in schools in Canada.

He enlisted in the Canadian Army during WWII and was a member of the Royal Rifles of Canada. In December of 1941, Adolph became a prisoner in a Japanese prison in Hong Kong. He spent three years and eight months as a POW.

On August 14, 1945 the liberation of prisoners took place and Adolph returned to Canada. In 1947 he moved to the United States and settled in the Rumford area.

He was employed for 33 years at the Boise-Cascade Paper Group of Rumford where he worked in the cutters.

He was a communicant of St. Theresa's Church in Mexico. He was an officer and active member of LeParasseux Snow Shoe Club for many years.

On May 1, 1971, he married Cecile Lapointe. He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife and spending time in his camper. He could always be seen setting at his picnic table and greeting friends at the Snowshoe Club Camping area at Worthley Pond.

Surviving besides his wife of 32 years are two daughters, Gladys Cyr of St. Petersburg, FL, and Jeannine Murray and her husband, Kenneth of Peru; two sons, Larry Cyr and his wife, Colleen of Gulfport, FL, and Michael Cyr and his wife, Audrey Jean of Tampa, FL; six step children, Jean-Marie Bolduc of Montreal, Germaine Lapointe and his wife, Laurie, Nicole Richards and her husband, David Roger Lapointe and his wife, Jocelyn, and Carol Smith and her husband, Tim, all of Mexico, Yvan Lapointe and his wife, Joanne of Peru; two brothers, Leo Cyr of Montreal and Edmond Cyr of New Richmond, P.Q. ; a sister, Janine Cyr of Maria, P.Q.;13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Lionel Cyr.

Edward L. Libby

LEWISTON -- Edward L. Libby, 80, of Canton, Me. died Friday, July 4, 2003 at the Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, Me. He had resided on School Street in Canton, Maine and had lived in the area for many years.

He was born in Rumford, Maine on May 23, 1923, a son of Charles and Dora Libby, Sr., had attended Rumford schools, and during WW-II had served overseas with the U.S. Army.

Mr Libby was employed as a mill worker at the Boise Cascade Paper Co in Rumford for over 40 years until retirement in the late 70's from the Unloading Crew.

He was a member of the Swasey-Torrey Post # 100, American Legion in Dixfield, and was a member of the Boise Cascade Paper Co. 25 & 40 Year Club.

He was married in Mexico, Maine on Sept. 10, 1960 to the late Norma Stinchfield who died in Lewiston, Me. on April 29, 1996.

Survivors include four daughters Vicky Patrick & husband Thomas of Mexico, Heidi J. Libby of Dixfield, Ann Smith & husband Steven of Jay, April Libby of Lisbon Falls; two sons Norman L. Libby & wife Maureen and Edward K. Libby both of Canton; three grandchildren Patience, Eric and Jeffrey; three great grandchildren Dakota, Kaylee and Carey; 2 step-brothers Charles & Raymond Libby; and 2 step-sisters Betty & Barbara Umbro.

Evelyn M. Potter

ROANOKE, VA -- Evelyn M. Potter, 86, of Roanoke, died on December 28, 2003.

Evelyn was a retired licensed practical nurse and was also a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church.

She was a loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include one daughter, Katherine P. Lewis, Roanoke; two sons, Donald Joseph Potter, Jr., and wife, Susie, amd James C. Potter and wife, Margie L., all of Roanoke; six grandchildren, Kate Dunkham, Chrissy Lewis, Jonathan C. Potter, Erin E. Potter, Kim C. Gajan, and James David Hayslett; two sisters, Rita M. DesRoches, Bethesda, MD, and Barbara P. Houck and her husband, Chad, Rockville, MD; one brother, William F. MacDougall and his wife, Connie, Rumford, ME.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Joseph Potter, Sr.

Funeral mass was conducted on December 31, 2003, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Joseph P. Lahman officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Lucille D. Holman

PORTLAND -- Lucille D. Holman, 94, a longtime resident of Dixfield, went to be with the Lord and her husband, Lyman "Tuttoo" Holman, on March 11, 2004.

She was born, Feb. 5, 1910, in Rangeley, a daughter of Robert Orrison and Helen June (Davis) Dill.

Mrs. Holman was a very kind and loving woman who, along with her husband, Tuttoo, made many contributions to the community in which she lived, worked and played. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Gregory Jon Peaslee

HALLOWELL -- Gregory Jon Peaslee, II, 24, of Hallowell, formerly of the Dixfield area, died unexpectedly on June 11, 2004 in Hallowell.

He was born Oct. 23, 1979, in Rumford, a son of Gregory J. Peaslee and Cheryl (Brown) Brennan. He received his education in Rumford, Dixfield and Telstar schools, earning his GED in Augusta.

At the time of his death, Greg was employed at Major Appliance and Furniture Store in Farmingdale. He was an outdoorsman who was a compassionate, nonviolent " hunter" and he loved to fish.

He will be missed by all who knew and loved him; his father, Greg J. Peaslee of Andover; his mother and step-father, Cheryl Brennan and John Brennan of Dixfield; two brothers, Joel Peaslee of Mexico and Sean Brennan of Dixfield; a sister, Amber Storer of Turner; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by his beloved paternal grandmother, Pearl Peaslee.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. from the Wiles Remembrance Center, 30 Weld St., Dixfield. Family and friends are invite to call at the Remembrance Center, Wednesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Burial at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Andover. Those attending his services have been asked to wear bright, colorful, and most importantly, casual clothing. In lieu of flowers, friends may give gifts to his family c/o Wiles Remembrance Center 30 Weld St., Dixfield, 04224.

John W. "Jack" McLeod, Jr.

NEWTON, MA -- John W. "Jack" McLeod, Jr., 84, of Waltham, MA, formerly of Newton, MA, died on Dec. 9, 2004 at the Newton Wellesley Hospital.

Born in Lewiston, ME, he lived in the Oak Hill section of Newton and Newton Highlands for most of his life before moving to Waltham 20 years ago.

Mr. McLeod was a graduate of Bates College, Univ. of Maine and he received his masters degree in education from Harvard University.

He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a former teacher in Rumford and Mexico.

Mr. McLeon was the principal of the Warren Junior High School in West Buxton and the Bowen School in Newton Centre.

The beloved husband of the late Gwen (Hutchinson), he leaves his children, John W. McLeod III of Marstons Mills, MA and Patricia A. Shepherd of Natick, MA. He was the brother of the late Norma Paradis.

He is also survived by five grandchildren and his dear friend, Ramonda Antico of Sudbury.

Sayward Eugene Pillsbury

RUMFORD - Sayward Eugene Pillsbury, 82, of Dixfield and Rangeley died on 4/26/06 at the Rumford Home.

Sayward was born the son of Rolla and Irene (Kempton) Pillsbury in Rangeley on Nov. 25, 1923. He attended the Rangeley schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943-1945 in England.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He married Mildred Wright on August 21, 1949 in Rumford.

He worked as a greenskeeper and as a golf pro at Oakdale Country Club in Mexico and at Mingo Springs Golf Course in Rangeley retiring in 1997. Sayward gained many lifelong friends during his years as a golf pro. He enjoyed playing golf, watching TV sports and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Sayward is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Cleon Fletcher of Dixfield; three grandchildren, Eugene Fletcher and his wife, Patricia of Dixfield, Daniel Fletcher and his wife, Deborah of Jefferson, and Rebecca Fletcher of Farmington; two great-granddaughters, Devon and Megan Fletcher of Dixfield; a sister, Jean Hitchcock of Dover-Foxcroft; and a sister in-law, Dorothy Pillsbury of Rangeley.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred of 49 years; an infant son; a brother, Ardean Pillsbury; and a sister, Elaine Brownlee.

David A. Holland

PERU - David A. Holland, 50, died of heart failure on Jan. 31, 2007 at his home on the Mineral Springs Road, West Peru.

He was born in Rumford on March 21, 1956, a son of V. Stanley Holland, II. and Claire L. Pelletier. He graduated from Rumford High School Class of 1974.

David served with the U.S. Navy as an AT3 from Nov. 29, 1977 to Sept. 26, 1980 when he was discharged with full disability. He ran a small engine repair business from his home for several years.

David enjoyed the outdoors, especially feeding the animals around his home, and he loved his family.

Survivors include his parents of Peru; three brothers, Paul Holland of Peru, Timothy Holland and wife, Karen of Peru, and Thomas Holland and wife, Peggy of Buckfield; five sisters, Patricia Hickey of Peru, Mary Arsenault of Peru, Colleen Levine and husband, Kenneth of Sudbury, VT, Jessica Manfre and husband, Phillip of Bastrop, TX, and Nona Holland of Peru; and many nieces and nephews.

At family request, graveside services will be conducted in the spring at the Demerritt Cemetery, West Peru at the convenience of the family.
