Clement E. Murphy

RUMFORD -- Clement E. Murphy, 81, died on Dec. 17, 2004 at the Rumford Community Home. He had made his home on Howard Street, Dixfield and had lived in the area for many years.

He was born in Berlin, NH on Jan. 6, 1923, a son of Cornelius and Robina (Miller) Murphy. He had attended local schools.

He worked as a trimmer at Oxford Paper Company, which later became Ethyl Corporation, where he worked in the steam plant as a boiler operator and retired from in 1978 after more than 30 years.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church; a member of Napoleon Ouellette Post #24, American Legion; member of Ethyl Corporation 25 Year Club; member Rumford Lodge # 862, B.P.O.E.; former member of the Antique Auto Club.

He loved to antique with his late wife and working on his 1931 Model A Roadster. He always had a smile on his face, a warm handshake, and a song in his heart.

He was married in Rumford on Feb. 27, 1943 to the late Eileen Butler, who died Apr. 27, 1994.

Survivors include a son, William "Bill" Murphy and wife, Mary Ann of Mexico; a daughter, Barbara Belanger and husband, Laurier "Bebe" of Rumford; six grandchildren, Michelle Belanger of Thomaston, Matthew Belanger of Weymouth, MA, Kelley Louvat and husband, David of Mexico, Keith Kennedy of Dixfield, Christine Moore and husband, Michael of Mexico, and Denise Murphy of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two great-grandchildren, Alexander and Mariah Witas of Mexico; a sister, Mary Dearborn of Berlin, NH; and a brother, Norman Murphy of Boca Raton, FL.

Bruce E. Mollard

RUMFORD - Bruce E. Mollard, 83, died on April 21, 2006 at his residence at Swain Brook Apartments in Rumford.

He was born in Portland, Oregon on April 13, 1923.

Bruce was married in New York City, NY in 1949 to the late Georgina Fulton, who died in Rumford on August 28, 1985.

Bruce was survived by distant relatives.

Arthur F. Bennett

RUMFORD - Arthur F. Bennett, 60, of Swift Avenue, died quietly at home with his family on Jan. 21, 2007.

Arthur was born in Watertown, NY, son of Carl and Dorothy (Cole) Bennett. He graduated from Watertown High School Class of 1955, attended Plattsburgh State Teachers College and graduated fron Univ. of Maine Portland-Gorham.

He retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 30 years of both active and reserve service. He taught at Old Orchard Beach High School in the Industrial Arts and Technology Department until his retirement in 1997.

Mr. Bennett operated a handyman business called Art's Work during his retirement years while living in Portland.

Arthur was active for many years in Deering Lodge #183, AF&AM, Scottish Rite and Kora Temple Shrine. He served as a volunteer with Portland History Docents at Victoria Mansion, with Portland Players in South Portland, and most recently, at Rumford Hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carolyn F. (Swett) Bennett; daughter Carol Bennett Bolden and granddaughter Taylor Bolden of Las Vegas, NV; daughter Whitney Bennett Brichetto and husband David J. Sr., grandson David . Brichetto, Jr. and granddaughter Renee M. Brichetto of New Gloucester; a brother, Robert L. Bennett of Clayton, NY; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Arthur is predeceased by his parents; a brother, David G. Bennett; and a sister, Margo Bennett Cook.

Hazel I. Martin

RUMFORD - Hazel Irene Martin, 60, of Spruce Street went to be with our lord on March 31, 2009 with her loving husband Rick by her side.

She was born on Sept. 28, 1948 to Elwin and Laura Plummer.

She was a homemaker for many years. She and her husband Rick were married for 15 years. Hazel enjoyed spending time with her husband, her cat Candy, as well as her beautiful grandchildren and loving family and friends. Hazel enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and making crafts. She is survived by her husband Rick of Rumford; six children, Peggy Holden and husband, Andy of Oxford, Denny Brown and wife, Betty of Oxford, Charlene Kahkonen of Florida, Charlie Billings and girlfriend, Jen of Carthage, Leon Billings and girlfriend, Alycia of Rumford, and Jerry Billings and girlfriend, Julie of Lewiston; nine grandchildren, Destinee, Ashley, Courtney, Jason, Titus, Nathan, Dawcyn, and Alycin. Hazel was looking forward to the arrival of her 10th grandchild later this month.

She is also survived by her siblings, Richard Plummer and wife, Phyllis, Robert "Bobby" Plummer, Elwin Plummer, Jr. and wife, Inga, Patricia Caron and her husband of Virginia.

She was predeceased by her parents, Elwin and Laura Plummer, as well as her grandparents.

The family would like to thank Dr. Jacob Ledesma; Rumford Hospital I.C.U; Med Surg Staff; Central Maine Medical Center: Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice. Special thanks to Tammy Bean RN, whose kindness will never be forgotten. Mr. Martin would also like to thank the crew at Adley's Auto Sales, as well as his close friends Shannon and Mike, for their continous love and support.

The Family wishes to invite people to a memorial gathering in a celebration of her life. There will be a lunch gathering at the Martin home at 55 Spruce St. in Rumford from 1-4 p.m. this Saturday.

Gregory M. Waugh

MEXICO - Gregory M. Waugh, 53, of Carlton Avenue, Mexico, passed away on May 5, 2009 at the home of his sister, Barbara Laramee, with his loving family at his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Rumford on Dec. 13, 1955, a son of Dorothy I. (Dube) and John Henry Waugh Sr. Greg was educated in Mexico schools and was a graduate of Mexico High School Class of 1973.

He was employed for 33 years with New Page Paper Mill in Rumford. Greg was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. He enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and building and repairing computers.

Surviving are his mother, Dorothy I. Waugh of Mexico; a stepdaughter, Courtney Tibbetts of Mexico; two brothers, John H. Waugh, Jr. of Portland, and David J. Waugh and wife, Janet of Deep Gap, NC; three sisters, Barbara Laramee of Mexico, and her children, Brian Laramee of Lewiston, and Roger Laramee of Mexico, Lorraine Cyr of Rumford, and Jackie LaChappelle of Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father John H. Waugh Sr., and a sister, Carol Pratt.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the oncology unit at Rumford Hospital and the staff of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.

Pauline B. Harris

RUMFORD -- Pauline B. Harris, 76, died on December 15, 2004 at the Rumford Community Home. She was a resident of Maine Avenue in Rumford. She was formerly of Salem, MA.

Born in Salem, MA on September 30, 1928, she was a daughter of Joseph and Marie (Letourneau) Gregoire. She attended schools in Massachusetts. She was a self employed seamstress and she also worked at Fishery Products in Danvers, MA. She enjoyed playing bingo.

She was married in Massachusetts on November 10, 1946 to Norman Harris, who survives of Rumford.

Other survivors include a daughter, Janet Wilson of Rumford; two granddaughters, Melissa Reikowsky of Lawrence, MA and Kristy Wilson of Mexico; a great granddaughter, Tasia McCann of Mexico; three sisters, Bella Wheelock of Beverly, MA, Laurette Dixey of Virginia, Theresa Tgettis of Salem, MA; and one brother, Raymond Gregoire of Salem, MA.

She was predeceased by a son, Gregory Harris, who died in 1993.

Leonide "Blackie" Arsenault

ROXBURY - Leonide "Blackie" Arsenault, 82, of Roxbury Pond died on April 19, 2006 at his residence with his loving family by his side.

Blackie was born October 4, 1923 in St. Paul, New Brunswick to Theodore "Ted" and Regina (Gallant) Arsenault. He graduated from Stephens High School in 1943.

The month he graduated from high school, he entered the Army. His unit landed in Normandy on D-Day with the first wave. Many members of his unit and accompanying units were killed. He was captured shortly thereafter by the German Army and was a prisoner of war for six months. He endured many hardships during that time.

After being liberated from the POW camp, he returned to Maine and married Muriel Patenaude on February 25, 1946.

He retired from the maintenance department at Boise Cascade Paper after 42 years of service. He was a member of the 40 Year Club Boise Cascade.

He also was a member of many other organizations in the area including: Napoleon Ouellette, American Legion Post #24, Robert Shand V.F.W. Post #1641, Elks, Eagles, and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a former President of the Chisholm Ski Club and participated in many of the club activities.

Blackie and Muriel ran Blackie's Ski Shop for a number of years, providing ski equipment to many local skiers.

Survivors include his loving wife, Muriel of Roxbury Pond; one son, David Arsenault and his wife, Sally of Roxbury Pond; and one daughter, Sylvia Wendt and her husband, Jim of Frederick, Maryland. He has two brothers, Gerard Arsenault and his wife, Pauline of Millinocket, and Leo Arsenault and his wife Anne of Wakefield, RI; three grandchildren, Erica Arsenault, Eric Arsenault and his wife, Janka, and Andrew Wendt; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Mickey Arsenault.

Lottie Knowles

CANTON - Lottie Knowles, 92, of Dixfield, died on Jan. 31, 2007, at the Victorian Villa Living Center, Canton, where she had resided since September.

She was born Oct. 9. 1914, in Bethel, a daughter of John and Willimina (O'Leary) Nowlin. She was educated in Bethel schools.

She married Oscar Knowles, who predeceased her in 1954. For 21 years, she was employed at Livermore Shoe.

Her greatest pleasure in life came from dancing on Saturday nights, something that she did well into her 90's. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking, reading and visiting with family.

She is survived by a son, Richard Knowles and his wife, Linda of Dixfield; a daughter, June Legere and her husband, Wallace of Dixfield; two brothers, Kenneth Nowlin and Clyde Nowlin, both of Harrison; two sisters, Florence Morgan of Bethel and Barbara Casey of Mexico; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

She was predeceased by a special friend, Merrill Frank; three brothers, Carl, John and Raymond Nowlin; and four sisters, Marjorie Nowlin, Rena Powers, Grace Bartlett and Eva Lane.

Beverly J. Godin-McKenna

RUMFORD - Beverly J. (Bev) Godin-McKenna, 77, of Dunton Street in Rumford, died peacefully at the Rumford Community Home on March 21, 2009 with her family by her side.

She was born in Rumford on July 7, 1931, a daughter of John and Margaret (Stevens) Bulger. She graduated from Stephens High School Class of 1949.

Bev worked at the Buy Right Meat Market and the Oxford Paper Mill, Bennett Shoe Factory, Bass Shoe Factory of Wilton.

She was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius-St. John Catholic Church.

She was married in Rumford on Aug. 6, 1955 to Joseph G. Godin, who died on Aug. 8, 1996. She married a second time on July 27, 1984 to Lawrence "Moldy" McKenna, who died on Dec. 26, 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph F. Godin and wife, Kathleen, of Fort Mills, SC, and Daniel G. Godin and wife, Vivian of Mililani, HI; three daughters, Joyce E. Godin of Lewiston, Donna L. Godin-Knowlton of Mexico, and Sharon L. Robichaud of Rumford; a step-son, Mark "Moldy" McKenna and wife, Debra of Jay; eight grandchildren, Melissa Godin, Michelle Godin, Dana J. Gross, Sa'Lyn Knowlton, Jesse Knowlton, Mark McKenna, Jr., Mathew McKenna and Mariah McKenna.

The family would like to thank the Rumford Community Home for their outstanding care and love they all had shown to our mother, and to Hospice and their staff for the wonderful care of our mother.

A spring burial will take place at the St. John's cemetery at the families request.
