Vito Papasadora

WASILLA, AK -- Vito Papasadora of Wasilla, AK passed away on June 6, 2011.

He was formerly of Rumford, ME and a member of the Stephens High School Class of 1946. He left in his senior year and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, finishing his education there.

Vito retired after 20 years service with the rank of staff sergeant and moved to Anchorage, AK, raising his family there.

He leaves his wife, Joyce; four sons, three daughters and their families; a grandson, who lived with him; a sister, Jennie Virgin of Dixfield; and two brothers, Ralph Papasadora of Rumford, and O. Paul Papasadora of E. Falmouth, MA.

Vito would have celebrated his 84th birthday on June 14.

Ervin Richard “Dickie” Brown

RUMFORD CENTER -- Graveside services for Ervin Richard “Dickie” Brown of Rumford Center were conducted on May 23, 2011 at the Rumford Center Cemetery, with Pastor David Wilhoite officiating.

Readings were given by Heather Brown and Penny Dennison.

Arrangements were under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Joseph R. Sciaraffa

RUMFORD -– Joseph R. Sciaraffa, 89, of Franklin Street, Rumford, died on July 4th, 2011 at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

He was born in Rumford on March 17, 1922, the son of Alfonso and Lucia (Bevilacqua) Sciaraffa. He was educated in Rumford schools graduating from Stephens High School Class of 1940 where he was a three-sport star athlete.

Joe served in the Pacific during World War II with the U.S. Marines, IV Division making landings on the Marshall Islands, Tinion, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was wounded on day 28 of the Iwo Jima Invasion earning him the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, and received the “Silver” Star honorable service medal from the state of Maine.

Upon returning from World War II, he continued his athletic career playing for the semi-pro football Portland Sagamores with his brother Tony. He also competed on numerous other teams including the Dixfield Townies, who played a Cuban National Baseball team in Battle Creek, MI in the early 50’s.

Joe competed in track and field into his mid-eighties, winning numerous medals including a National Championship in the 100 meter dash in 2002.

Joe worked as a millwright for over 32 years until retirement from Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford in 1984. He was a Communicant of St. Athanasius–St. John Church; Rumford Maine Lodge #862, B.P.O.E.; Napoleon Ouellette Post #24, American Legion; and the Robert Shand Post #1641, V.F.W.

Joe was predeceased by his parents; four brothers, Steven, Nicholas, Anthony, and Guy; and a sister, Jane.

He was survived by a very special friend and companion, Joanne Witas of Mexico; a sister, Fonza Giberson of Largo, FL; sons, Gene Sciaraffa of Durango, CO, and Dean Sciaraffa and his wife, Jennifer of So. Portland; three grandsons, Russell and Ross Sciaraffa of Colorado Springs, CO, and Greyson Sciaraffa of So. Portland.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Maine Veterans Home and the Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for their excellent care shown to Joe.

M. Geraldine (Allen) Arsenault

GARDNER, MA -- M. Geraldine (Allen) Arsenault, 84, of Gardner, MA died peacefully in her sleep on August 20, 2011 in Heywood Hospital, Gardner.

Born in Mexico, ME on December 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Fabianna (Trial) Allenn. Gabrielle spent her early years in Mexico and Rumford.

Geraldine graduated from Gardner High School with the Class of 1945. She was employed for several years by Berkey Photo in Fitchburg, MA as a cashier, retiring in 1988. She was previously a caser for 30 years, employed by several different chair factories in Gardner.

Geraldine was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Gardner. She was also a member of the Gardner Women’s Golf Association and the Gardner Senior Citizens.

She was always active and enjoyed, playing bingo, cribbage, Whist, Pitch and Poker. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, sewing, bowling and skiing. She also enjoyed going to yard sales. During her mid-forties, she began playing golf and won many trophies and championships.

She leaves two sons, Allen P. Arsenault of Orange and Chris T. Arsenault of Winchendon; two daughters, Judith A. Arsenault of Leominster and her ex-husband, Michael Arsenault of Leominster, and Nancy J. Arsenault of Gunnersville, Alabama; three sisters, Irene Fournier of Gardner, Anita LeRoy and her husband, Lawrence of Winchendon, and Janice Plante of Rumford; seven grandchildren, Anne Danio, Dustin Arsenault, Corey Arsenault, Kelly Maroudas, Jacob Arsenault, Olivia Arsenault and Jade Arsenault; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Geraldine was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Stephen Walter Arsenault, who died May 25, 1991; and one sister, Barbara Maillet.

Evangeline G. Breton

RUMFORD -- Evangeline G. Breton, 97, of Pine Street, died on Sept. 13, 2011 at Rumford Hospital following a brief illness, with loving family at her side.

She was born in Rumford on December 12, 1913, a daughter of Peter J. and Ida (Fortier) Perry. Evangeline was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School Class of 1933.

She was employed for several years at Irish’s Market on Pine Street.

She married Raymond L. Breton in June of 1937 and together they celebrated 39 years of marriage. He passed away on January 23, 1976.

Evangeline was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. She enjoyed doing quilting and dancing. The family will remember her as the best mother and memere in the world.

Surviving are her children, Carol I. Crumlish and husband, Robert of Woodbury, NJ, David R. Breton and wife, Gloria of Rumford, and Albert R. Breton and wife, Diane of Rumford; a brother, Arthur Perry of Mexico; seven grandchildren, Kevin, Keith, Barry, Michelle, Chad, Eric and Adam; and four great-grandchildren, Amber, Evan, Noah and Lauren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Raymond L. Breton; a granddaughter, Erica; two sisters, Lorraine and Irene; and seven brothers, Rene, Willie, Alton, Raymond, Roland, Alfred and Clifford.

Jeffrey W. Gauvin

WOOLWICH -– Jeffrey W. Gauvin, 52, passed away peacefully on Sept 17, 2011.

He was born on May 24, 1959 in Bath to the late Robert (Bob) and Beverly (Van Buren) Gauvin. He grew up in Bath and was a graduate of Morse High School.

On June 15, 1985 he married Nathalie Simmons in Brunswick.

Jeff worked at the Bath Iron works for almost 35 years and Bath YMCA for 10 years. Jeff was a member of the BIWRA, BIW Fire Dept and Woolwich Fire Dept. He also coached youth baseball, basketball and swimming for many years.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife of 26 years; children, Jarrett and his wife, Amy of Dexter, Justin of Woolwich, Catharine and Jillian of Bath; grandchildren, Tatum, Madison and Jarrett, Jr. of Dexter, Parker and Jordan Onorato, Mackenzie Mains, Carter, Colden and Cane Caron, all of Bath; step children, Jon Doyle of Bowdion, Heidi Combe of Boston; and a brother, R. Daniel Gauvin of Rumford.

He will be missed.

The family would like to thank “Uncle” David Gauvin and the “God Mother” Stephanie Batterman for all their help and caring.

Also, thank you to the staff at the YMCA for their many visits and words of encouragement, his many friends, the CHANS Nurses, The Hospice Nurses and all the staff at Bodwell. God Bless you all for your wonderful care of Jeff.

Esther Drouin

RUMFORD -- A Mass of Christian Burial honoring the life of Esther Drouin was celebrated on May 25, 2011 at Parish of the Holy Savior.

Fr. Alfred Jacques was the celebrant. George Gionet was the altar server. Mark Belanger was the organist.

Prayer of St. Francis was sung by Lillian Poirier. Other music selections were Be Not Afraid, Ave Maria, You Raise Me Up, and Fly Like a Bird.

The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by Connie Venskus. The gifts were presented by Kim and Mike Papsadora. The eulogy was given by her daughter, Jeanne Duguay, and son, Gary Drouin.

Pallbearers were Jason Capponi, Dan Bordeau, Matt Papsadora, Dane Curato, Matt Myatt and Eric Bordeau.

Interment was in St. John Cemetery. A reception followed in the parish hall.

Services were under the care and guidance of SG Thibault Funeral Home, Rumford.

Carol Elaine Stone

FARMINGTON –- Carol Elaine Stone, 66, of Dixfield, passed peacefully to be with the Lord on Sept. 12, 2011 with family at her side.

She was born Nov. 6, 1944, in Canton, the daughter of Albert and Virginia (Averill) Viitala.

She had a brief stay at Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington where she received special hospice care for her recently diagnosed cancer.

Her life was spent helping others by doing volunteer work in her community. All that knew her were touched by her genuine nature and her kind way.

She is survived by her mother, Virginia Viitala of Dixfield; her daughter, Bettina Cunningham and her husband, John of Hudson; her son, Lincoln Stone and his fiancee, Cheryl Elliott of Dixfield; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Viitala and his wife, Brenda of Dixfield, and Gilbert Viitala and his wife, Geraldine of Greenbush; two nephews, six nieces and numerous cousins.

She was predeceased by her father, and a brother, August Viitala.

Her family would like to thank all who cared for their dear mother in her time of need at Edgewood. Their care and compassion were appreciated. They would also like to express a special thank you to Edna Rose Tyler for the love and friendship she gave to Carol through the years.

Cecilia Rafuse Shurtleff

Cecilia Rafuse Shurtleff

N. WINDHAM -- Cecilia Rafuse Shurtleff, 96, formerly of Rumford and also for over 20 years in South Berwick, went to be with her Lord on November 20, 2010 at her residence at the Ledgewood Manor in North Windham.

She was born in Rumford on January 22, 1914, the daughter of Ashley and Annie (Veinotte) Rafuse. She graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford and Farmington State Teachers College and received her Masters in Education from the University of Maine at Orono in 1954 and her Certificate of Advanced Study at University of Maine at Orono in 1959.

She taught school in Peru, Mexico and Rumford for over 45 years until retirement in 1979.

She was an active former member of the Rumford First Baptist Church and had attended the First Congregational Church of Dover, NH. She was a member of the Maine Education Association and the Maine Retired Teachers Association.

She loved square dancing with her husband, enjoyed gardening, antiques, the Boston Flower Show and had a huge collection of dolls. She also enjoyed camping and traveling in her motor home.

She was married in Berlin, NH on June 25, 1934 to Willard C. Shurtleff, who died on January 22, 1998. Survivors include two sons, Dawson Shurtleff and wife, Muriel of Dixfield, and Alton Shurtleff of Gorham; eight grandchildren, Denise Richard and husband, Albert of Dixfield, Diane Paterson of Rumford, Doreen Shurtleff of Lewiston, Deirdre Shurtleff of Dixfield, Deborah Young and husband, Walter of Buxton, Terry Whitney of Scarborough, Stephen Shurtleff and wife, Mellyn of Sterling, MA, David Shurtleff of New York, NY; 11 great-grandchildren, Megan Richard of Springfield, MA, Melissa Richard of Lewiston, Chelsea Paterson of Portland, McKenzie and Delaney Paterson of Rumford, Ashley and Corey Young of Buxton, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Eric Shurtleff of Sterling, MA, and Martin Shurtleff of New York, NY.

Paul George Paradis

AUGUSTA -– Paul George Paradis, 72, a resident of Main Street in Mexico, died on June 2, 2011 at the Maine Veterans Hospital in Togus, following a lingering illness. He had recently been moved from the Veterans Hospital in West Roxbury, MA where he had been a patient for the past month.

He was born April 30, 1939 in Auburn, the son of Joseph and Simone (Patry) Paradis. Paul was a 1958 graduate of Edward Little High School; after graduation he served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962.

On June 26, 1983 in Leeds, he married his wife of 27 years, Virginia (Ginny) Pasquine of Millinocket.

Paul owned and operated the Chuck Wagon Restaurant on Sabattus Street in Lewiston. He later opened the Chuck Wagon Railroad Restaurant, also on Sabattus Street in Lewiston. After closing his restaurant in Lewiston, he worked at the Chuck Wagon Restaurant in Livermore Falls.

Paul and his wife relocated to Mexico, opening the Covered Wagon Restaurant on Main Street on February 14, 1984. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #271 in Lewiston and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Rumford. He enjoyed fishing with his brother, Norman Paradis and friend, Dempsey Kersey at "Demps" camp in Miramichi, New Brunswick Canada.

He was also an avid sports fan, particularly the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Giants, more recently, the Patriots and of course the Red Sox. He and his brother Norm enjoyed their weekly road trips these past few years, often called "The Paradis Brothers Traveling Comedy Show" by their friends! Paul enjoyed bird hunting, music and certainly, he was well-known for his exceptional cooking abilities.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginny) Paradis of Mexico; daughters, Rebecca Lessard and her husband, Jamie of Lewiston; Christina Paradis and her fiancé, Dan O’Halloran of Hooksett, NH, his son, Paul Paradis, Jr. and his wife, Melanie of Lewiston; his son-in-law, Dr. Ron Chicoine of Lewiston; seven grandchildren, and his brother, Norman Paradis and his wife, Tamalie (Tammy) of Livermore Falls.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Julie Chicoine on May 4, 2010; his aunt, Yvonne Berube; and nephew, Michael Paradis.

A celebration of life will be held 2-4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Covered Wagon Restaurant, 29 Main St., Mexico. If desired, contributions may be made to: Fisher House GPF 5009, 1400 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, MA, 02132. Interment St. Peter’s Cemetery, Switzerland Road, Lewiston.

Erwin L. Merrill Sr.

RUMFORD -- A Memorial Service honoring the life of Erwin L. Merrill Sr. was held on February 5, 2011 at SG Thibault Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Tracy officiating.

A favorite song of Erwin’s was played during the service; Mama Liked the Roses by Elvis Presley. The eulogy was given by his son Erwin L. Merrill, Jr.

A reception followed at The Green Church in Mexico.

Jean Barrington

LEWISTON -- Jean Barrington, 85, died on January 3, 2011 at the home of her son, Walter Barrington on Rejane Avenue, Lewiston. She was a resident of Erchles Street in Rumford.

Born in Rumford on April 22, 1925, she was a daughter of the late David and Jessie (Goodfellow) Gilmour. She was a graduate of Stephens High School with the Class of 1943 and also graduated from Burdett College in Boston, MA with the class of 1945.

She worked at the Rumford High School as manager of the lunch program.

She was a member of Rumford United Methodist Church, the church choir, the church Belles, Evening Guild, the United Methodist Women’s Club. She enjoyed quilting, spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Red Hats and loved a good adventure on the road.

She was married in Boston, MA on November 25, 1944 to the late Walter Barrington Sr., who died in Rumford on April 11, 2002.

Survivors include a son; Walter D. “Chick” Barrington and his wife Linda of Lewiston, a daughter; Ann Thompkins of Rumford, grandchildren; Scott Barrington of West Palm Beach FL, Philip Barrington and his wife Emily of Hampden, ME, Christina Martineau and her husband Normand of Greene, ME, Rachel Hutchinson and her husband Isaac of Lewiston, ME, great grandchildren; Elizabeth, Kelsey, Emma, Samantha, Eve, Lily, Fiona, Liam, Daniel, Ivey a brother; James Gilmour and his wife Phyllis of Mesa, AZ.

She was predeceased by her husband; a son, David; and granddaughter, Jessica.
