Robert V. Serafin

COLUMBUS, MS -- Robert V. Serafin, 76, of Columbus, MS, passed away on Oct. 5, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born in Rumford on March 18, 1935, the son of Pietro A. Serafin and Bernadette A. Pelletier.

He was retired from the Army and Dept. of Education in Mississippi. He was a Master Mason, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Shriner. He was a P.E.R. of the Elks Club, a member fo the Rumford Lodge, and a member of the Odd Fellows.

He was a life member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the Amvets, and the Disabled American Veterans. He was Chapter Commander of Chapter #6 in Columbus, MS. He was a State Department Commander from 2007 to 2008.

He enjoyed restoring old Chevy and GMC pickup trucks, summer trips to Maine to visit with family and friends. As an avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing trips to Moosehead Lake with his good friend, Jim Blaisdell, along with several others.

He is survived by a son, Peter, and his wife, Sonya of Scarborough; daughters, Ann and husband, Scott Burnham of Westbrook, Tina and husband, Charles Ferrara of So. Portland, and Bernadette Serafin of Scarborough; a brother, Francis Serafin of Brewer; two sisters, Gertrude Downs and Margaret Russell, both of Rumford; and several grandchildren who he enjoyed spending time with.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Elmo; and a sister, Juliette Blake.

The family thanks the staff at Gosnell Hospice House for the compassionate care they provided.

Visiting hours will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, followed by a Masonis service at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, send donations to your local Disabled American Veterans or Elks Club. Interment with military honors will be at a later date in Woodlawn cemetery in Andover.

Francis B. “Frank” St. Cyr

RUMFORD -- Graveside services for Francis B. “Frank” St. Cyr of Rumford were conducted on May 13, 2011 at St. John Cemetery, with Fr. Phil Tracy officiating.

Military Honors were provided by the Maine Military Funeral Honors Program from Augusta.

Arrangements were under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Horace “Honk” Worcester

RUMFORD -- A Mass of Christian Burial honoring the life of Horace “Honk” Worcester was celebrated on August 1, 2011 at Parish of the Holy Savior.

Fr. Philip Tracy was the celebrant. George Gionet was the altar server. Mark Belanger was the organist.

Music selections during the mass were How Great Thou Art, the Old Rugged Cross, Precious Lord Take My Hand, and Fly Like A Bird. The Old Testament was proclaimed by his cousin, Elaine Cormier. The New Testament was proclaimed by his granddaughter, Savannah Worcester.

Offertory Gifts were presented by his son, Horace Worcester, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Noo Worcester. Personal reflections were shared by his son Bob Worcester.

Pallbearers were Horace E. Worcester, Jr., Nery J. Worcester, Bob Worcester and Peter J. Worcester.

Interment was in Farrington-Morton cemetery in Mexico. Military Honors were rendered by the US Navy Honor Guard of Portsmouth, NH. A reception followed at 49 Franklin.

Services were under the care and guidance of SG Thibault Funeral Home, Rumford.

Lorraine “Mema” M. Adley

FARMINGTON -– Lorraine “Mema” M. Adley, 81, of Rumford, passed away unexpectedly on October 25, 2012 at Franklin Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born in Mexico on July 29, 1930, a daughter of Frank and Mary (Blanchard) Arsenault.

She married Garfield Adley on February 3, 1951 and together they celebrated 48 years of marriage. He passed away on July 8, 1999.

Lorraine and her husband, Garfield started Adley Home Improvements in 1976, and later established Adley Auto Sales & Service in 1979; the family business that continues today and she was still active in the daily operations.

She was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior.

Lorraine loved playing the slot machines and her many trips to Foxwoods and Hollywood Slots with her friends.

She was affectionately known as “Mema” to family and friends. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She enjoyed attending all of her grandkids school activities and sporting events.

Surviving are her children, Greg Adley of Rumford, Judy Collette and husband, Victor of Rumford, and Brad Adley and wife, Susan of Rumford; two sisters, Theresa Roy of Simi, CA, and Lauretta Arsenault of Rumford; sisters-in-law, Bernadette Arsenault of Lewiston, and Barbara Parrella of Rumford; and five grandchildren, David, Elizabeth and Jonathan Adley, Katherine Collette and Celina Adley.

She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Frank Arsenault; brothers, Edward and Dennis Arsenault; and sisters, Edna Walker and Minnie Arsenault.

Stanley Goodwin French

RUMFORD -– Stanley Goodwin French, 76, of Round Pond, Isle au Haut, and Rumford, died peacefully on October 21, 2011 at the Rumford Hospital with his loving family by his side.

Stanley was born in Weston, Massachusetts on May 17, 1935, and was the son of Stanley Goodwin French and Mary Hubbard French.

Stanley was married on August 26, 1961 to Susannah Sewall Alden, who survives him.

Stanley attended Meadowbrook, The Cambridge School of Weston and graduated from Choate. He served in the Army for four years and then received his BA and MA from Boston University. He went on to receive his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. His doctoral thesis was on the history of cemeteries in the United States. From 1967 to 1979 he was a professor of American Intellectual and Social History at California State University Northridge.

He believed strongly in the importance of upkeep and preservation of cemeteries for their historical value and served as a board member of the Muscongus cemetery Association.

He spent summers on Isle au Haut from the time he was a child. When he married, he continued to summer there. After leaving California, the family settled in Round Pond on the coast of Maine.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 12 at the United Methodist Church, 1418 State Rte 32, Round Pond, with Reverend Julia Wilson officiating. Memorial donations would be welcomed by Muscongus cemetery Association, PO Box 262, Round Pond, ME 04564.

He is survived by his children, Jennifer French Foster and her husband, Henry (Hank) of Rumford, and Aaron French of Portland; his grandchildren, Sara Mae Parlin and Thomas Willard Parlin of Rumford; his sister, Katherine Lyon French of Cambridge, MA; and nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond.

He was predeceased by his sister Anne Elizabeth (Betty) Jacobs.

Elizabeth B. “Betty” Hayden

HANOVER -- Elizabeth B. “Betty” Hayden, 79, of Hanover, died peacefully at her residence with her family by her side on August 24, 2011.

She was born in Hanover on September 16, 1931, the daughter of Ira and Miriam (Cole) Brown. She attended local schools and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel with the Class of 1949.

Betty worked at Grant’s Kennebago Camps for several years and at various other jobs in the winters, always managing to have the falls free for deer hunting. She was a Maine Guide for many years specializing in deer hunting.

In 1976, she attended the University of Maine for courses in real estate to obtain her broker’s license. She opened her own office, Hayden’s Realty in 1977 in Poland and worked in real estate until her retirement in 1996 when she moved back to Hanover.

She was a member of the Poland Community Church. She enjoyed hunting, skiing, hiking, splitting wood, and spending time with her family.

Betty was married December 26, 1961 to George W. Hayden. They moved to Poland in 1968 and he died in Poland July 30, 1995.

Survivors include two brothers, Stanley and Robert Brown of Hanover; three step-sons, Tom, John and Chris Hayden; four step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen M. Ware

RUMFORD –- Helen M. Ware, 90, of Canton, formerly of Turner, died on Oct. 18, 2011 at the Rumford Hospital.

She was born Dec. 15, 1920 in Livermore, a daughter of Harold and Villetta (Randall) Bryant. She was educated in the schools at Brettuns Mills and Canton High School.

She worked at the Priscilla Rug Shop in Turner for 33 years, retiring in 1982.

She lived in Turner for 54 years before moving to Spring Rock in Leeds and later moving to Canton. She enjoyed flower gardening, crossword puzzles, watching and feeding birds and dancing in her younger years.

She is survived by three daughters, Judith Libby and her husband, Jack of Wilton, Roberta Richards and her husband, Donald of E. Jay, and Roxanne Tremblay and her husband, Wilfred of N. Turner; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her former husband, Lloyd Ware; life partner, George Fisher; brother, Lester Bryant; sister, Irene Quimby; and great-grandson, Jeremy Munson.

John F. Milligan

PORTLAND -- John F. Milligan, 82, died in Portland on November 3, 2011, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was formerly of Rumford.

Born in Rumford on June 6, 1929, he was a son of the late Ambrose and Reta (Peabody) Milligan. He was a graduate of Stephens High School with the Class of 1947.

He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He worked as a superintendant on the paper machines for Oxford Paper Company and Ethyl Corporation in Rumford from 1947 to 1974, for S.D. Warren in Westbrook from 1974 to 1981, transferred to S.D. Warren in Skowhegan from 1981 to 1990, and then became a consultant for Weavexx Corp from 1990 to 1996. He was proud and often talked about his nearly 50-year career in the pulp and paper industries.

John was a devoted husband who has been his wife’s primary caregiver for the past 15 years and never forgot her birthday or anniversary with flowers for their 58 years of marriage. Family always came first and he had a great sense of humor which will be remembered for generations to come. He valued his family and grandchildren.

He loved to travel and spent winters in Florida where he would entertain his grandchildren and summers in Weld. He was a member of the American Legion, an avid cribbage player, loved gardening, and also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was married in Rumford on May 9, 1953 to Alice Anderson, who survives of Portland. Other survivors include two sons, John and his wife, Joy of Cape Elizabeth, Aaron and his wife, Jill of Scarborough; a daughter, Maureen Willey and her husband, Bob of Sherborn, MA; two brothers, Earl Milligan and his wife, Edie of Rumford, Merle Milligan and his wife, Katherine of Florida; sisters, Shirley Farwell and her husband, Warren of Rumford, and Nellie Burgess of Rumford; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two infant children, baby boy Robert and baby girl Milligan; six brothers, Philip, Sabon, Harold, Allie, Carl and Pat; and two sisters, Minnie Hallett and Barbara Noble.

The family would like to send a special thanks to all physicians and his health care providers at Hospice of Southern Maine and the Cedars of Portland.

A memorial will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, November 19 at St. Maximillian-Kolbe Church in Scarborough. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Monday, November 21 at Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius–St. John Church in Rumford. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery, Rumford. Those who desire may contribute to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086-1240 in his memory.

Everett R. Roy

MEXICO -– Everett R. Roy, 84, of Youngs Park Road in Mexico, passed away peacefully at his home on October 12, 2011, with loving family watching over him.

He was born in Rumford on March 2, 1927, a son of Peter and Katherine (Roy) Roy.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Everett married Barbara Canwell on July 2, 1949 and together they celebrated 57 years of marriage. She passed away on August 15, 2006.

He was employed for many years with Diamond Match Co. in Dixfield.

Everett was very family oriented. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. He was very proud of all of the grandchildren’s accomplishments in sports and in life in general.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and four wheeling. Everett also enjoyed telling stories about all of his trips to the lake and in the woods.

He always had a kind word for everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

Surviving are his four children, Bonnie K. Johnson and husband, Stephen of Gray, Robert J. Roy and wife, Tina of

Mexico, Lori Ann Roy and companion, Bill of Mexico, and Darin Roy and wife, Katrina of Mexico; five grandchildren, Joe Bedard, Andy Bedard, Tara Roy, Evrit Roy and Egan Roy; six great-grandchildren, Zack and Kassi Burgess, Kylie and Will Bedard, and Kaden and Olivia Bedard; three sisters, Vangeline Humphrey of California, Jeannette Carr of Florida, and Lillian Miller of Wilton; three brothers, Albert Roy and wife, Jane of Texas, Roy Roy and wife, Nancy of New Hampshire, and Peter Roy and wife, Theresa of Florida; and his longtime companion, Mildred Dresser.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Barbara; and three brothers, Edmond, Lawrence and Aimee.

Everett will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, but his stories will live on forever.

A celebration and benefit will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Rumford Eagles. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 at Greenwood cemetery in Dixfield.

James Richard Perry

LEWISTON -– James Richard Perry, 74, of Rt. 108 in Rumford, died on June 23, 2011 at CMMC in Lewiston following a brief illness with lung cancer.

He was born in Rumford on January 26, 1937, a son of Joseph E. and Lucy (Arsenault) Perry. James was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years. James was employed for nearly 40 years with the Boise Cascade Paper Mill. He was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior.

James was a member of the Sons of Italy, the VFW, the 40/8 club, the American Legion, the Elks, the Snowshoe Club and the Eagles. He enjoyed playing cribbage, fishing, hunting, golfing, playing pool, listening to classic country music, watching the old classic westerns, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, Robert J. Perry and wife, Tammy-Lyn of Peru; a daughter, Lynn M. Petrie and husband, Jay of Rumford Center; two sisters, Elizabeth Dumoulin and husband, Fern of Rumford, and Emily Louise Schrath and husband, Eric of Plymouth, MA; and four grandchildren, Erin Perry, Avery Perry, Julianne Petrie and Amanda Jo Petrie.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Mary (DeFilipp) Perry; two brothers, Paul and Raymond Perry; and a sister, Irma Sirois.

Madeline M. Brown

RUMFORD -- Madeline M. Brown, 80 died on November 18, 2010 at the Rumford Hospital. She was a resident of Rumford.

Born in Rumford on April 6, 1930, she was a daughter of James and Bambina (Ciccarelli) Lavorgna. She was a graduate of Stephens High School with the Class of 1948.

She worked for Oxford Paper Company until her retirement and afterwards worked for BJ’S in Auburn.

Madeline was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church. She was a member of and past president of Napoleon Ouellette Post #24 American Legion Ladies Aux., LeParesseux Snowshoe Club, Robert Shand Post #1641 Ladies Aux., and St. Timothy Circle #504, Daughters of Isabella, Rumford Falls Aerie # 1248, FOE.

She was married in Rumford on April 28, 1951 to the late Eugene A. Brown, who died in 1971.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Brown of Rumford; a son, Nicholas Brown and his wife, Sue of Mexico; two brothers, Anthony Lavorgna and his wife, Gloria of Mexico, Nicholas Lavorgna and his wife, Pauline of Peru; a step granddaughter, Niki Keogh and her husband, Patrick of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers; Michael and James Lavorgna and a sister Elizabeth LaRocca.

She will be remembered for her Christmas Eve dinners, lasagna and Italian cookies

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Athanasius-St. John Church in Rumford. Interment will be in St John Cemetery, Rumford.
