Andrea L. MacDonald

BETHEL -- Andrea L. MacDonald, 59, died on May 24, 2012 at her home in Bethel.

She was a resident of Mason Street in Bethel.

Born in Biddeford on Sept. 11, 1952, she was a daughter of Burton and Rita (Arsenault) MacDonald. She graduated from Rumford High School with the Class of 1971 and also graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington.

She worked at Ames Dept Store. She enjoyed knitting, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed helping with class reunions and was a good friend to all that knew her.

Survivors include a son, John of Rumford; and three grandchildren, Ashley, Kirsten and Nikole.

She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother, Russell “Rusty” MacDonald.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Thursday at the Parish of The Holy Savior St. Athanasius St John Church. Interment will be in the Demerritt Cemetery, Peru. Friends are invited to call at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St. Rumford on Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. prior to the funeral Mass.

Leah McCleary

PORTSMOUTH, NH -- Leah Lorraine (Cormier) McCleary, 103, passed away on May 21, 2012, after a short stay at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.

Leah, one of nine siblings, was born on April 26, 1912 in New Brunswick, Canada, and moved with her parents to Rumford when she was five years old. There, she eventually met and married her late husband, Henry A. McCleary, and had two sons, Richard and Henry.

In 2005, Leah moved from Rumford to Portsmouth, NH, to be closer to her sons and their families. As she had always done in Rumford, Leah continued to assert her independent spirit while living in Portsmouth in her own apartment. With her generosity of spirit, Leah continued to be a light and an anchor to her family and friends until the time of her passing, which she also greeted with dignity and joy. Having fully lived and experienced firsthand the many awesome as well as a few saddening events of the last century, Leah has left her own legacy through devoted family.

Leah leaves behind her son, Richard J. McCleary, and his wife, Vera. She was predeceased by her son, Henry A. McCleary, but has continued her close and loving relationship with Henry's wife, Cecile. Leah also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by eight siblings.

Joseph Milton Roy

LEESBURG, FL -- Joseph Milton Roy, 78, died on March 7, 2012 in Leesburg, FL.

He was born on Feb. 11, 1934, a son of Raoul E. and Clarice (Gallant) Roy. He attended Rumford school and graduated in 1952.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and worked in armament/gunnery. He served two years in Japan and two years stateside in Texas. While in Texas, he was a member of the Foster Air Force baseball team, where he was a pitcher.

In 1960, he cut a record at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and traveled throughout New England promoting the record.

He married Janice (Doyen) on Nov. 19, 1960 and together they raised four children. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, retiring in 1992 after 32 years of service. He was known in the Rumford/Mexico area as the "singing mailman." He often used his gift of music for local benefits.

At one time, he had a local radio show on WRUM in Rumford, where he sang songs and had sisters, cousins and local people entertain. Louise Elliot played the piano for him. Later on, he learned to play the guitar and sang in the St. Patrick Variety Show, sponsored by St. Athanasius & St. John Parish (now Holy Savior), the Madison Inn, Bethel Inn, Sudbury and Kawanhee inns and at Saddleback.

He loved baseball and was a Little League coach for many years. He loved to watch the Boston Red Sox on television and was a lifelong fan. He was an avid golfer. He loved to fish and hunt, and enjoyed gardening and woodworking. When he was younger, he made wooden toys for his siblings and they nicknamed him "Joe Spike." In his later years, he enjoyed summers in Maine on Cobbossocontee Stream in West Gardiner at his son's fishing camp.

He is survived by his wife Janice of 51 years; a son Russell A. Roy of Chester, NH; two daughters, Leslie D. (Roy) Heald of Scarborough and Kelly (Roy) Perry of Limerick; five grandchildren, Adam and Michael Cardinal, Clara and Katie Roy, and Jacob Perry; four sisters, Janine Duffy of Hendersonville, NC, Julie McInnis and Millie Schriener of Flat Rock, NC, and Annette King of Amherset, NH and Wildwood, FL; a brother, Billy Roy of Mexico and Tarpon Springs, FL; and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by a son, Philip "Toby" Roy; his parents; and three brothers, Robert, Raymond and Eugene Roy.

He was a communicant of St. Paul's Parish in Leesburg, FL. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on June 9 at Holy Savior Parish in Rumford.

Charles D. Chappell, Jr.

RUMFORD -- Charles D. Chappell, Jr. 63, of Wilton, died on May, 22, 2012 at the Rumford Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born May 21, 1949 in Watseka, IL, a son of Charles D. and Martha Sanders Chappell Sr.

On May 22, 1976, he married Linda Denney and they raised two daughters. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was self-employed as a carpenter and truck driver. He had a favorite pet, a Pomeranian named Bayley.

Charlie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was saved on August 25, 2005 and has gone to heaven to be with Christ the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda of Wilton; daughter, Jen Speranza and her husband, James of Dixfield; three daughters, Carla Murphy and her husband, Kevin of Dixfield, Julie Black and her husband, Joe of Wilton, and Corinna Latarte of Mexico; an adopted son, Frank Burgess of Mexico; eight grandchildren, Mariah, Bethany, Britney, Miley, Jacob, Owen, Cheyenne and Nathan; one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne; three sisters; three brothers; and a cousin, Arthur Chappell.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother; and an uncle.

The family would like to thank the hospice unit at Rumford Hospital and Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for making Charlie’s last days as comfortable as they could.

Public memorial services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday from the Faith Baptist Church, 574 Auburn Rd., Peru. The family will host a potluck celebration following services from 2-5 p.m. at the Swasey-Torrey American Legion Post in Dixfield. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered to the ALS Foundation, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.

Shirley E. Drapeau

MEXICO -- Shirley E. Drapeau, 86, of Richards Avenue, died unexpectedly on January 19, 2011 at her residence.

She was born in Rumford on December 19, 1924, a daughter of Cloyd E. and Sadie E. (Richards) Swett. Shirley was educated in Mexico schools.

She was employed at Diamond National and Bass Shoe Shop. Shirley was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior and was a member of WOW’s.

She enjoyed playing Yahtzee and cards, and spending time with her family. Shirley will be sadly missed by her beloved dog, Dakota, and cat, Tuffy.

She is survived by her three sons, Ray Drapeau and wife, Glenda of Ottisfield, Philip Drapeau Sr. and wife, Rose of Weld, and Larry Drapeau and companion, Karen Hodsdon of Mexico; ten grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Napoleon Drapeau, Jr.; a daughter, Aleta Drapeau; two sons, Alfred and Jean; and two brothers, Raymond Swett and Elwin Swett.

Spring Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to McKennel’s Animal Adoption Agency, 88 Hall Hill Rd., Rumford, ME 04276.

John F. Milligan

RUMFORD -- A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for John F. Milligan of Portland on November 21, 2011 at Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius-St. John Church, with Fr. Phil Tracy as celebrant.

Altar Assistant was George Gionet. Organist was Mark Belanger.

Music selections were On Eagle’s Wings, Because the Lord Is My Shepherd, We Will Rise Again, and Fly Like a Bird.

Readings were given by his grandsons, Sean Milligan and Michael Willey. Eulogy was given by his grandson Adam Milligan.

Presenting the gifts were his granddaughters, Megan Willey and Victoria Milligan.

Committal services were conducted by Fr. Phil Tracy.

Military Honors were conducted by the Maine Military Funeral Honors program from Augusta.

Amazing Grace was played at the committal services by bagpiper Jim Willey.

A reception followed at the Parish Hall at St. Athanasius – St. John Church.

Arrangements were under the care of the Meader & Son Funeral Home, Rumford.

Jean F. Dyke

LEWISTON -– Jean F. Dyke, 92, of Hartford, died on May 26, 2012 at Central Maine Medical Center.

She was born in Farmington on Jan. 13, 1920, a daughter of Arthur W. and Ida May (Thompson) Farrand. She received her education in Canton schools.

On Sept. 24, 1938, she married John Dyke in Livermore. She worked for many years at Adams Poultry Farm, Livermore Shoe, and at Turner Farms packing eggs. She loved flowers and her garden and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 73 years, John of Hartford; a son, John L. Dyke and his wife, Rose of Dixfield; a daughter, Linda May Green and her husband, Richard of Hartford; grandchildren, John, Matthew, Jason, Amanda, Melissa, Aaron, and Valorie; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Courtney, Nicholas, Brittany, Alexandria, Paige, Anson, Matthew, Jr., Michael, Mackenzie, Rachel, Mariel, Abigail, and Audrey; and one great-great grandson, Owen.

She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur; a sister, Madge; and a grandson, Christopher.

Arthur J. “Artie” Ladd, Jr.

RUMFORD -- Arthur J. “Artie” Ladd, Jr., 47, of Rumford Point was called to his place in Heaven on May 22, 2012 after a brief but difficult battle with cancer. Artie was the youngest of four children born to Arthur J. and Joyce C. (Raye) Ladd Sr. on November 12, 1964.

A 1984 graduate of Rumford High School, he was employed by his father’s family business, Ladd Farms, Inc. Artie was a friend to many and though he will be deeply missed, we will cherish our memories and remember him for all the many ways he made each day brighter. Those who knew him can recall his passion for family, love for Bingo and his “Beano Buddies”, as well as his adoration for snowmobiling, three wheeling, his four legged fur children, and any outing or adventure where he was accompanied by those dearest to his enormous heart.

Survivors include his loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ladd Sr. of Rumford Point; two sisters, Rhonda Elliott and companion, Charles Brown of Rumford Point, and Mary (Ladd) Lyons and husband, Thomas Lyons of Jacksonville, FL; nieces, Shelley Elliott of Rumford, Ashley Kensell of Augusta, Chantel Diotte of Jacksonville, FL, Samantha Purcell of Chesterton, IN and Chloe Brown of Rumford Point; nephews, Nicholas Lyons and David Lyons of Jacksonville, FL; great nieces and nephews, Abby, Logan, Gena, Malachi and Brooke; his beloved best friend, George Cataldo and loyal companion, “Spirit,” (his dog).

Making his arrival into heaven joyful were those he’d loved and lost. A holy reunion when there he met his beloved brother Chester “Chet” Ladd, close friend Barbara, and his much missed “Boo-Boo”. Until we meet again...love ya more.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday July 28 at the Hanover cemetery in Hanover.

Harold R. Jackman

RUMFORD -- Harold R. Jackman, 75, of East Livermore, died on May 21, 2012 at the Rumford Hospital.

He was born Nov. 10, 1936 in Livermore Falls, a son of Cecil and Edna (Bamford) Jackman. He attended schools in Chesterville and Fayette.

On Nov. 1, 1958, in Chesterville, he married Janice E. Jordan of Dixfield.

He was employed at Livermore Shoe, the Wilton Tannery, and also worked in the woods and owned his own pulp truck. He later worked for Cianbro, was a mechanic at the Western Auto in Livermore Falls and was employed by the Town of Fayette until his retirement.

He was devoted to his family and was an outdoorsman who loved wildlife, particularly birds. He always had a project he was working on as he was the ultimate “putterer.” As was often said of him, “he loved to work on anything he could put wheels on.” His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janice, of East Livermore; one son, Spencer Jackman and his wife, Penny of East Livermore; two daughters, Katherine Philibotte and her husband, Jim of Harrison, and Gay Fletcher and her husband, Allen of Livermore; seven grandchildren, Kyle Herrick and his wife, Ashley, Darcy Herrick and companion, Anthony Brook, Megan Ricker and her husband, Andrew, Craig Jackman and companion, Alexa Smith, Kent Jackman and companion, Lacey Jackson, Keith Smith and Cory Smith; three great granddaughters, Ava Smith, Lea Smith and McKenna Herrick; his stepmother, Dora Jackman of Turner; brother Richard Jackman and his wife, Debbie of Jay; sisters, Arlene Wilkins and companion, Tom Randall of East Livermore, Lois Gray and her husband, Luther of Windham, and Lisa Pratt and her husband, Robert “Bob” of Turner; a very special aunt, Mildred Robinson of Monmouth; uncle, Robert Bamford of Fayette; and a special friend, Ormand Gross, “Jr.” of Chesterville.

He was predeceased by his mother in 1940 and his father in 1979.

Roland Patneaude

REGION -- Roland Patneaude, 79, passed away peacefully on Dec. 16, 2011 at the Hospice House, with loved ones by his side.

A brief service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Maine Veterans' Memorial cemetery Chapel, 163 Mount Vernon Rd., Augusta. In the event of an official government storm closing of state facilities, the service will be rescheduled.

On Saturday, Jan. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the family will welcome guests to join them in a celebration of Roland's life at the American Legion Post 100, corner of 23 Main St. and River Street in Dixfield.

Donald F. Hebert Sr.

RUMFORD -- A Mass of Christian burial honoring the life of Donald F. Hebert Sr. was celebrated on May 9, 2011 at Parish of the Holy Savior.

Fr. Philip Tracy was the celebrant. Mark Belanger was the organist.

Music selections were Wind Beneath My Wings, Ave Maria, Amazing Grace and Fly Like a Bird. The Old Testament was proclaimed by Grace Hebert. The New Testament was proclaimed by Gerrie Warren. Gift Bearers were Vincent Hebert and Barry Campbell.

Personal reflections were shared by Lauren Hebert, and Stephen Cudmore.

Pallbearers were Donald F. Hebert, Jr., John J. Hebert, Richard M. Hebert, Joseph Hebert, Lauren Hebert, Geoff Low, Andrew Cudmore, and Donald L. Hebert.

Committal services were at Greenwood cemetery in Dixfield. A reception followed at 49 Franklin.

Services were under the care and guidance of SG Thibault Funeral Home, Rumford.

Robert J. Bernard, Jr.

RUMFORD -- Robert J. Bernard, Jr., 53, died unexpectedly on April 24, 2012 in Rumford. He was a resident of the Garneau Road in Peru.

Born in Rumford on June 13, 1958, he was a son of Robert and Mabel (Jamison) Bernard Sr. He attended Mexico schools.

He worked for Richard Carrier as a truck driver. He enjoyed riding his Harley, bird hunting with his wife and daughter, Kayla, and fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Hog Chapter.

Robert was married in Peru on August 21, 1993 to Tish Levesque, who survives of Peru. Other survivors include three sons, Robert Bernard III and wife, Cassandra of Lisbon, John Bernard and wife, Sarah of Buckfield, and Dan Levesque of Lisbon; daughters, Tanya West and her husband, Dean of Lewiston, Kayla Bernard of Carnegie, PA; brothers, Keith Virgin and wife, Denise of Hartford, Kevin Williams of Massachusettes; sisters, Karen Ruprecht and husband, Albert of Wilton, Kaye Abbott and husband, Donald of Dixfield, Debra Wentworth of Dixfield; and eight grandchildren.
