Albert B. Woodman
March 28, 2003
Kennebunkport, Maine

Alfred B. Woodman of Kennebunkport, Maine died March 28, 2003 at Southern Maine Medical Center after a long illness. He was 82.
Alfred was born in Sanford, Maine on July 25, 1920. His parents were Kenneth and Marguerite Woodman. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1939 where he was known as “Woody” and was a star on the basketball and baseball teams. He struck out 23 players in one game and was named to the Portland Telegram League, All-Star Baseball Team three straight years. He was invited to try out with the Boston Red Sox, but World War II intervened.
He served with the 10th Mountain Division of the U. S. Army and was seriously wounded in Northern Italy and awarded the Purple Heart. After a lengthy recovery he returned home and worked on the construction of the Maine Turnpike.
In the late 1940’s he pursued an education and career in textiles beginning work with Goodall- Sanford. After the closing of the mills in Sanford, he moved his family to Clarksville, Virginia working for Burlington Industries. Returning to New England he held positions with Geigy Chemical, Sandoz and BASF before retiring in 1987. He continued working in textile sales until recently. He was an active member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists for fifty years.
Alfred was married to Eleanor Warner Woodman , a native of Kennebunkport for 45 years. She died on June 30, 1991. They loved their family, their community, and dancing to big band music. He was committed to his family and is survived by three sons, Robert, and his wife Mary of Kennebunkport, William, and his wife Sheila of Simsbury, CT, and Richard, and his wife, Kristen, of Kennebunkport; five grandchildren, Robert C. Woodman, of Boston, Sara Yentsch of Boothbay Harbor, James Woodman of Savannah, GA, Silas Woodman of Kennebunkport, and Heidi Woodman of Simsbury, one great grandchild, Ella Yentsch, and a brother Lloyd “Red” Woodman of Sanford.
At Alfred’s request there will be no memorial services, the family will privately remember. Donations may be made in Alfred’s memory to:

Allan A. Brooks

Allan A. Brooks, 34 years, a resident of Pine Hill Road, Berwick died Friday in Mays Landing, New Jersey.

Mr. Brooks was born in Rochester, NH. November 22, 1968 a son of Ashley and Audrey Hall Brooks. He attended Berwick Schools and Noble High School. An avid outdoorsman especially enjoying Hunting and Fishing. He was a self employed Tile and Carpet installer in the Berwick, Sanford, Rochester, NH and Somersworth, NH. area.

He was predeceased by his mother Audrey J. Hall Brooks

He is survived by his two daughters Meagan Brooks of Berwick and Ashleigh Brooks of South Berwick, His father Ashley Brooks of Concord, North Carolina, Half-brother Vern Brooks, and Half-sisters Kari Brooks and Amy Brooks all of Concord, NC.
His maternal Grandfather Wayne G. Hall Rochester, NH. His paternal grandmother Eleanor Brooks of Berwick, Me. His long time companion Meredith Lanouette also survives. Several Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Family members and close personal friends are invited to attend memorial services
1 pm Saturday June 28th at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St. Berwick Me. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick, Me.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Charity of ones choice in Mr. Brooks memory.

Allan R. Schwarte

Allan Richard Schwarte, age 58 years a resident of the Upper Landing Road Wells, ME died Saturday April 5 at York Hospital, York, ME after a courageous battle against lung cancer. He was the husband of Grace Mercer Conrad Schwarte.

Mr. Schwarte was born March 21, 1945 in Poughkeepsie, New York a son of Edwin H. and Ethel L. (Chase) Schwarte. He attended Poughkeepsie schools and graduated from Poughkeepsie High School. He earned his BA in Political Science at Syracuse University in New York, he served in the US Army in Viet Nam, and earned his Masters in Urban Planning at Virginia Tech. He was employed in Arlington, VA for eleven years as a Land Planner prior to moving to Wells.

A resident of Wells for past 25 years, coming from Virginia, Mr. Schwarte was a Land Use Planner and wrote the Land Use Law for the town of Wells, ME. He served on the Wells Planning Board and the Site Review Board and was a consulting Land Planner for the town and other businesses. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and collected antique sewing machines.

Survived by his wife Grace Mercer Conrad Schwarte of Wells, step-children Trevor Conrad of Penn Yan, NY and Gwen Conrad of Juarez, Mexico, brother Bruce Schwarte of Ivor, VA, aunt Helen Chase Manning of NY, NY, uncle Jurgan Schwarte of NJ and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Messiah Christian Church, Route One North, Wells Thursday, April10th from 4 to 6 PM. A celebration of Allan’s life will follow at 6PM with the Pastor Daniel Moore officiating the service. Interment will be in Ocean View cemetery later in the Spring.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to a charity of ones choice in Allan’s memory to continue his legacy of serving your community.

Allen McCroy Pargellis

Allen McCroy Pargellis 79 yrs a resident of Pier Road, Cape Porpoise died Monday December 1, 2003 at the Riverridge Health Care in Kennebunk after a brief illness.
He was born in Pasadena, California, the son of Professor Stanley Pargellis and Elizabeth Scribner Allen Pargellis. He attended Milton Academy in Milton, Mass., and graduated from Yale University in 1947. He did graduate work at the Institute of Advanced International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and also at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.
He served in the Pacific Theatre with the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II, and was also recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Captain.
Mr. Pargellis began his career as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State. He worked in the European Recovery Program in Paris, France, and subsequently on the East – West Contracts Staff of the Department in Washington, where he was instrumental in promoting cultural and educational exchanges between the Untied States and the Soviet Union. Later her transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency and was assigned to Vietnam. Where he played a major role in the creation of the strategic hamlet program. Returning to Washington he served as deputy chief of the Vietnam Affairs Branch.
Subsequently he was assigned to Laos, where he assisted the resistance of mountain guerrilla forces against the Communist Insurgence. He closed his CIA career as Chief of the Japan Branch.
After retiring from Government service in 1971, Mr. Pargellis joined the management consultant firm of Data Solutions Corp. in McLean, Virginia. He became director of the firm’s largest operating division, and directed the performance of contracts with the Navy Department, the Department of Labor, and the Postal Services, among others.
Mr. Pargellis moved permanently to Cape Porpoise in 1979. He became, for several years in the 1980’s, general manager of Telstar, Inc, a small electronics firm in Kennebunk engaged in the manufacture of electronic temperature control devices used primarily in the plastic industry.
Mr. Pargellis participated in a number of volunteer activities, serving as President of the Kennebunk Public Health Association and as a member of several committees for the town of Kennebunkport. He was an American Legion member, and undertook responsibility for many years for placing the flags on Veteran’s graves in local cemeteries. He was also a member of the Kennebunkport cemetery Committee.

He was predeceased by his wife Camille V. Pargellis who died in May 1995 and a daughter Pamela A. Pargellis who died in 1996.

He is survived by four sons Andrew N. Pargellis of Hoboken, New Jersey, Christopher A. Pargellis of Redding, Connecticut, Gordon F. Pargellis of Austin, Minnesota and Gregory S. Pargellis of Kennebunk, two sisters Margaret Silberling of Huntington, New York and Katherine Bowe of Boston, Massachusetts and five granddaughters.

Funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday December 5, 2003 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk, ME.
Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, ME.

Should friends desire memorial donation may be made to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust P.O. Box 7028 Cape Porpoise, ME 04014 in Mr. Pargellis memory.

Anne H. Sahrmann

Anne H. Sahrmann, 34 years, of Kennebunkport, Me chose to end her life on this earth when her body could no longer sustain her spirit. She was the wife of Thomas R. Sahrmann.

Mrs. Sahrmann was born in New Brunswick , New Jersey, Feb. 7, 1969 a daughter of Stephen P. Davis and Joyce M. Laughlin. She graduated in 1987 from Acton Boxborough Regional High School. She then went on to Skidmore College and the University of New Hampshire, Whittimore School of Business where she was a Presidential Scholar, and served as Valedictorian of the Class of 1991.

Following her education she served as Special Assistant to the President for the FIC Management Co. in Newton, Ma. After her move to Maine she served as Business Manager the law firm of Petruccelli and Martin in Portland, Me. Recently she was serving as business manager of the Biddeford Veterinary Clinic in Biddeford, Maine.

Anne had the innate gifts of perception and empathy. She was a troubleshooter, actress artist, and was caretaker of all animals and people. Anne was much, much loved by friends and family.

She is survived by her husband Thomas R. Sahrmann of Kennebunkport, Me her father Stephen P. Davis of Hollis, N.H. her mother Joyce M. Laughlin of Portsmouth, N.H. One sister Allison Williams of Williamsburg, Va. her paternal grandparents Bill and Laverna Davis of Syracuse, Neb. also survive.

Memorial services will be held 11AM Saturday July 19th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, Me.

Arthur L. Pitman

Arthur L. Pitman, 87 years a resident of Chapman Lane West Kennebunk died Saturday at the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Rita Chapman Pitman.

Mr. Pitman was born in Laconia, N.H. June 1, 1916 a son of Edward and Amy DeMeritt Pitman. He attended Laconia Schools. During World war 11 he was employed as a machinist at the Portsmouth Navel Shipyard. Following the war he became employed at the Sanford-Goodall Mills in Sanford. He then worked as a machinist at the former Kidder Press now known as Moore Business Forms.

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of West Kennebunk and served as Treasurer of the Church for several years. He was a member of York Lodge #22 AF & AM of Masons in Kennebunk and the Mousam Lodge of Odd Fellows in Kennebunk he was a resident in the winter months at Lady of the Lake in Florida for the past twenty years. He was an avid Golfer and enjoyed the out of doors.

Mr. Pitman was predeceased by one brother and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of sixty one years, Rita Chapman Pitman of West Kennebunk, three daughters Mrs. Sally Burr and her husband Kenneth of Kennebunk, Mrs. Susan Matthews of Portland, Mrs. Marilyn Messer and her husband Reverend Dr. Ronald Messer of Eliot, seven grandchildren Jeremiah A. Messer, Rebekah L. Messer, Briggs A. Seekins, Benjamin J. Seekins, Marcia Seekins Pirone, Kenneth G. Burr III and Timothy A. Burr and two great grandchildren Alec Burr and Carol S. Ellsworth.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk Monday evening from 6-8pm. Masonic services will be held at 7pm Monday at the Chapel.
Funeral services will be held 1:30PM Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Main St. West Kennebunk with the Rev Lynn Campbell officiating. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, West Kennebunk.

Audrey Coffin

Audrey Whitney Hussey Coffin, died on June 13, 2003, at Huntington Common in Kennebunk due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Audrey was born on February 6, 1913 in the Dover Hospital in Dover, NH, a daughter of Walter Hussey of Berwick and Catherine Carty of Sligo, Ireland and had lived in Berwick her whole life. She was a 1930 graduate of Sullivan High School in Berwick and also graduated with honors in 1933 from Memorial School of Nursing in Pawtucket, RI.

Upon receiving her R.N., she was a nurse in area hospitals, ultimately working at Frisbee Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NH. She specialized in private duty and was on one case for sixteen years.

Audrey was a talented tole painter and decorated many tin and wood objects. She took many courses and was accomplished in whatever she undertook. She loved her home, was a great cook and loved a party. She was a member of the Somersworth Grange.

She was predeceased by her husband Harold N. Coffin of Berwick and a sister Louise MacKenzie of Somersworth, NH.

Audrey is survived by a daughter, Bernice K. (Bunny) Coffin; a sister Maxine York of Rochester, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

A visiting hour will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 from 1 to 2 PM at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick with a funeral service at 2 PM. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Berwick. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Salvation Army, c/o Kennebunk Savings Bank, Berwick, ME 03901.

Barbara A. Merrill

Barbara A. Merrill, age 66, resident of the Stearns Road, Ogunquit, Me. died Wednesday at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, NH. after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Carl Merrill who died October 3, 1998.

Mrs. Merrill was born in Bethel, Maine a daughter of Walter and Norma Rolfe Jodrey. She attended Bethel Schools and graduated from Gould Academy. She was a well known business women in Ogunquit and the Proprietor of the Norseman Inc. a well known tourist Resort in Ogunquit, Me. She enjoyed the game of golf and was a member of the York Country Club, The Cape Neddick Golf Club and the Indian River Golf Plantation in Florida. She was a member of the Southern Maine Women’s Golf Association. During the winter months she resided in Stuart, Florida.

She is survived by a son Scott C. Merrill and his wife Danielle of Scottsdale, AZ, two daughters, Mrs. Martha Sheckells and her husband Mark of Stuart, Fla, and Mrs. Lorna Wentzell and her husband Mark of Ogunquit, ME, four grandchildren Jack Merrill, Mollie Doucette and her husband Dan, Hunter Sheckells and Abbie Sheckells and two great grandchildren MacKenzie Doucette and Izaiah Doucette. One brother Arlan Jodrey also survives.

A celebration of Mrs. Merrill’s life will be held Monday August 25 at 4pm from the Ogunquit Baptist Church with the Rev David Clark officiating. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Bethel, Maine, at a later date.

Charles W. Philbrick Sr. 88, a resident of Kennebunk formerly of Arundel Road , Kennebunkport died Monday June 16, 2003 at the Riverridge , Kennebunk after a long illness.
He was born in Kennebunkport, Me on May 16 1915 a son of George and Clarissa (Speed) Philbrick.

He graduated from Kennebunkport High School and was a WWII veteran serving the United States Navy.

Charles was a long time carpenter and builder in Kennebunkport area for many years.
He enjoyed gardening and his yard work

He was predeceased by his wife Elsie E. Hutchins Philbrick , his daughter Beatrice Philbrick and a brother R. Longley Philbrick.

He is survived by his son Charles W. Philbrick Jr of Edgartown, MA and 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 10 AM Friday at the Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport with the Reverend David Wigley officiating.
