John Frank Harrison
June 12, 2004
Kennebunk

Lt. Col. John Frank Harrison, Jr.
1928 – 2004

KENNEBUNK - John Frank Harrison, Jr., 75, a resident of Kennebunk, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2004, surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 16, 1928 in Manchester, NH, the son of John Frank and Dorothy Packard Harrison.

The son of an engineer, Frank spent his early life and school years in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Missouri. He graduated from Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1951 and completed his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. He was a charter member of the Maine CPCU, teaching numerous certification classes. He also held the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. He served on two Governor’s commissions on insurance, and numerous insurance advisory councils throughout his career. Frank was a former member of the Board of Directors of Grange Mutual Insurance Company of New Hampshire.

Early in his career, Frank worked for the Boston Old Colony Insurance Company as a special field agent with his long time friend and mentor, Paul Goode. In 1958 he joined Joseph and Charles Cole at the Cole Agency Insurance of Kennebunk, retiring as the president of Cole-Harrison Agency in 2002 after 42 years in the industry.

Frank served on the Board of Directors of Ocean National Bank for 16 years, and as the Board’s chairman from 1990 until his retirement in 1997. He was passionately committed to the concept of independent community banking. Upon the merger of Ocean National Bank with an out-of-state bank holding company, Frank played an integral role founding Rivergreen Bank in Kennebunk in March, 2003, serving as its first chairman.

Retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Marine Corps in 1988, Frank served as the Commanding Officer of the 10th Engineering Company, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, headquartered in Portland, Maine. He joined the Marines in June 1946 and graduated from boot camp in Paris Island, South Carolina. He later attended Officers’ Candidate School, receiving his commission and subsequently serving in the Korean conflict.

Frank served the Kennebunk community in a number of capacities. He was a member of the Board of the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, serving as its president when the Museum earned its accreditation from the American Association of Museums in 1978. He was also a past president of the Kennebunk Fire Society and a former member and chairman of the Kennebunk Board of Assessment Review. For many years he served as the treasurer of Kennebunk’s Boy Scout Troop #304. He was a modest and unassuming man who quietly assisted many in the community.

While his professional and civic responsibilities were many, his first devotion was to his family. At the time of his death, Frank lived with his beloved wife in their home of 46 years where they raised their eight children and joyfully oversaw their antics, their kids’ friends, a menagerie of pets, and more recently their grandchildren. He taught all of his children to ski and, in the early 1970s, after spending years driving a station wagon of kids every weekend to various ski areas, he purchased a family ski camp in Carrabassett Valley. There was always room for one more at camp, and many weekends or school vacations saw camp filled wall-to-wall with his children and their friends. Frank later skied with many of his grandchildren at Sugarloaf, introducing them to his favorite sport and filling camp once again. He hung up his skis in 2003 after a skiing accident, but continued to spend many enjoyable times in the Valley.

Frank is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances McCarthy Harrison of Kennebunk and his brother, Peter Harrison of Colchester, Vermont and Kennebunk. His eldest child, John Steven Harrison, predeceased him in December 2003. He is survived by his seven remaining children, Frances Harrison and James Harrison of Kennebunk, Anne Harrison Jordan of South Portland, David Harrison, Mary Alice Harrison and Eric Harrison of Kennebunk, and Beth Kissinger of Hopkinton, NH. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Leigh Harrison, Elizabeth Harrison Peplaw, Will Harrison, Rob Jordan, John Harrison, Linda Harrison, Emily Harrison, Katherine Kissinger, Katie Jordan, Meghan Kissinger, Christy Harrison Allard and Lily Kissinger. He was particularly fond of several surviving cousins, including Mary Hartingh of Kennebunk, Betty Jane Cometa of New York City, Dee Granger of Pennsylvania, Sarah May Koogler of Ohio and Virginia Sue Forstot of Michigan.

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held on Friday, June 18, at 11 a.m. at Christ Church, Dane Street, Kennebunk with the Revs. Carolyn Lambert and Stephen Hastings officiating. Internment will immediately follow in Hope Memorial Cemetery, Kennebunk. Friends may visit Thursday, June 17, from 2 to 4.p.m. and 6 to 8.p.m. at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.
