Wells – Rowena K. Beamis 84 years a resident of Ocean Ave. Wells died December 19, 2003 peacefully at her home with her family at her side.

Mrs. Beamis was born in Presque Isle, ME. on October 13, 1919 a daughter of William and Katherine (Strafford) Price.

She graduated from Berwick High School.

She was with the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps. In 1943, Mrs. Beamis was the owner of the Beamis Apartments in Wells for 52 years.

She also was a member of the Wells Chamber of Commerce and a communicant of the St. Mary’s Church in Wells.

She especially enjoyed her family and her grandchildren.

Mrs. Beamis was predeceased by her husband James E. Beamis.

She is survived by her four sons, James Beamis Jr. and Mary Leonard of Eliot, ME. Robert Beamis and wife Deborah of North Berwick, ME.

Michael Beamis of Eutis, ME. and Danny Beamis of Wells, ME. and one daughter, Mary Beamis of Wells, ME.

She has one sister, Ada Marquis of Somersworth, NH, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday December 22, 2003 at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s church, Eldridge Road, Wells.

Ruth Smith

Kennebunk, ME – Mrs. Ruth B. Smith, age 90, of Ocean View Road, Kennebunk, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at St. Andres Health Care in Biddeford, ME. after a long illness.

She was the daughter of Harry P. and Ethel (Littlefield) Belyea.

Ruth graduated from Westbrook High School, then worked at Youland Department Store in Kennebunk.

She was a member of the Christ Church for many years, and also a member of the Independent Service Club, the Webannett Women’s Club and the Kennebunk Public Health all of Kennebunk.

She was predeceased by her husband Henry Smith who died in 1986.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her three daughters Doris Clark of Wells Branch, ME., Linda Geiringer of Portland, ME., Sharon Smith of Cumberland, ME. and Bradenton, Fla., two brothers Donald Belyea of Bradenton, Fla., Stephen Belyea of Brewer, ME., two sisters Mary Cole of Bradenton, Fla., Elizabeth Wakefield of Portland, ME., four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

A memorial graveside service will be held at the Oak Grove cemetery at 2:00pm Saturday, May 29, 2004, with the Reverend Janet Leighninger Officiating.

Shirley Ann Hoyt

Wells - Shirley Ann Hoyt, 59, formerly of Wells, died at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a long illness.

Shirley was born in York, Maine on March 13, 1944 a daughter of Gus and Jenny Stevens Keene.

After graduating from high school, Shirley joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era.

More recently, Shirley worked at Spencer Press in Wells.

Shirley was an active member of the American Legion.

She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and baking.

She is survived by: daughters Candy Hayes of Lowman, NY and Tammy Wysocki of Sheffield, MA; son Paul Tart of Lewiston, ME; sister Marjorie Lewis of Springvale, ME; and three grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Justin Tart and Ashlee Hayes.

Friends may call from 5-7 pm Wednesday, December 17 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, Maine.

Interment will be in the spring of 2004 at the First Parish cemetery in York where a graveside service with military honors will be held.

Margaret Waisnor

Margaret Waisnor, 80 years of Drakes Island, died Sunday at her residence.

She was born May 30, 1923 the daughter of William Spencer and Margaret Elizabeth (Hill) Hale in Wilmington, MA.

From February 1978 through 1991, she was a library aide at Wells High School who was commonly known as “Mrs. W.”

Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandkids.

They were very special and to her “perfect.”

She loved her job and the kids. She was proud of the year that the kids dedicated the yearbook in her honor.

She also enjoyed her volunteer work at the Food Pantry, her swimming classes, and playing Mahjong at the Senior Center in Lower Village, Kennebunk.

Her favorite pastime was her weekly card game with her friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edmond Martin Waisnor in February of 1977.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Martin and Susan Waisnor of Amityville, New York, her daughter and her husband, Elizabeth and Richard Scott of Sanford, three grandsons, Bryan Waisnor of New Jersey, Brett Waisnor of Arizona, Owen Trude of Maryland, and a granddaughter, Megan Scott of Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Food Pantry at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells, ME 04090.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 14 from 4 to 8 PM at Bibber Memorial Chapel in Kennebunk.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 15 at 11 A.M. at St. Martha’s on Portland Road in Kennebunk.

Maggie Alice Burke

Maggie Alice Burke, 12

PORTLAND - Jan. 5, 2004, Maggie Alice Burke, 12, passed away lovingly attended by her mother, Michelle Massicotte, her sister, Eliza Burke and her father, David Burke.

Maggie lived her life with an exuberance that captivated everyone who met her.

Maggie is survived by several aunts and uncles, many cousins, her maternal grandmother and her maternal great-grandmother.

She will be joyfully remembered by all of her friends at Casa and Morrison Developmental Center.

Rather than flowers, donations may be made to Dream Factory, Inc.

Linda Dee Davenport

Linda Dee Davenport 60 years a resident of Log Cabin Road, Kennebunkport died Monday January 26, 2004 at the Southern Maine Medical Center Biddeford from complication due to a long battle with diabetes.

She was born in Saco, Maine on December 1, 1943 a daughter of Donald Raymond Bryant Sr. and Thelma Agnes (Dill) Bryant Gantnier and graduated from Kennebunk High School the class of 1962.

She attended Beauty Academy Hairdressing School in Saco and Police Schooling for several years.

She was a self-employed hairdresser in Cape Porpoise for 18 years.

She was a Police Matron for Kennebunkport Police Department for over 22 years and received a recognition award for continuous service.

For the last 21 years, she was employed by the Beaudoin family as a nanny.

She was also their office personnel and treasured friend.

Linda was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary, both of Kennebunkport where she volunteered her time for the organizations.

She enjoyed going to the horse shows and basketball games.

She is survived by her husband of 16 years Russell Preston Davenport of Kennebunkport, three daughters Karen Lee Davis of Sanford, Lisa Ann Monk of Arundel and Amy Elizabeth Eldridge of Northport, Five brothers Gary Bryant of West Kennebunk, Jeffrey Bryant of Old Orchard Beach, Donald Bryant Jr., Steven Bryant and Kenneth Bryant all of Kennebunkport, Four sisters Donna Reinhardt of Wisconsin, Kelly Gantnier of Portland, Kristi Kidwell and Melinda Anderson both of Kennebunkport, Four Grandchildren and one great grandson.

Visiting Hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Thursday January 29, 2004 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk, Maine where a funeral service will be following the Eastern Star Service at 1 PM Friday January 30, 2004.

In Lieu of Flowers, Contributions in Linda’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association P.O. Box 2208 Church Street, Augusta, Maine 04330-2208.

Kenneth Penney

Kenneth Penney, 95 yrs, a resident of Summer Street in Kennebunk died Monday, March 22, 2004 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford after a brief illness surrounded by his family.

Kenneth was born in Bangor, ME on January 12, 1909 a son of Edmund and Emily (Billie) Penney and attended Clifton schools.

Mr. Penney moved to Little Falls, New York where he worked at the Erie Canal for several years then he moved back to Maine where he worked at the Bath and South Portland Shipyard during World War II. After the war he moved to Old Orchard Beach where he worked at the Saco Lowell Shop.

In 1947, he moved to Kennebunk and a few years later he went work for Keuffel and Esser of Kennebunk until his retirement in 1972.

During his retirement he did several odd jobs for the people of the Kennebunk’s.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening with a passion and picking blueberries.

He was predeceased by his wife Hazel M. Fenwick Penney who died in 1999 and four brothers Roland, Norman, Owen and Russell Penney, a sister Hilda Penney Braun and two grandsons, Andrew Ross and Robert Vadnais and a great grandson Kenneth David Webster.

He is survived by his son Alan Penney of Amarillo, TX, four daughters Marilyn Welch of Cary. ILL.

Deanna Ross and her husband Harry of Wells, Sandra Carroll of Sarasota, FL., and Joyce Walz and her husband Karl of Sanford.

Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Saturday at the Kennebunk Baptist Church Main Street Kennebunk, Me with the Reverend James King officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk in the spring.

Memorial Donations may be made to the Kennebunk Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 396, Kennebunk, Maine 04043 in Mr. Penney’s memory.

Josephine L. Merrill

Josephine Logan Merrill, age 93 of Kennebunk, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at Bradford on the Common.

She was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 18, 1910, a daughter of Samuel Simpson and Elsie (Supplee) Logan.

Josephine graduated from The Agnes Irwin School and was a homemaker all of her life.

She had lived in Kennebunkport year round since 1967 coming here from Philadelphia, New York and New Jersey.

She enjoyed playing golf and was the oldest living member of the Cape Arundel Golf Club.

She also was a member of the Kennebunk River Club, St. Anne’s Church, and St. David’s Church, the Arundel Beach Club and enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her husband of 46 years, John L. Merrill, Jr. died May 9, 1984.

Josephine is survived by her son, John L. Merrill, III of Wellesley, MA; two daughters, Josephine Merrill Eastman of New York City, and Mary Elizabeth Merrill Hoffman of Peterborough, NH; eight grandchildren, E. Logan Snow of Ridgefield, CT, J. Roberts Snow of Bethesda, MD, Nathaniel Merrill Snow of Strafford, NH, Louise Eastman Loening of New York City, John Lindner Eastman of New York City, Lee Vail Eastman, II of New York City, John Lenord Merrill, IV, of Telluride, CO. and Dorothy Ilg Merrill of Denver, CO; and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. Saturday, March 13, at St. David’s Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Burial will be at the Arundel cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094, or to St. Ann’s Church, P.O. Box 44, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.

Henry L. Hanscom

Kennebunk- Henry L. Hanscom, Sr., passed away at his home Friday, March 5th.

Mr. Hanscom would have been seventy-nine on his next birthday.

He was born April 8th, 1925, the son of Bertram and Helen Jewel Hanscom.

He grew up in Kennebunk, and became a master carpenter whose work has been featured in Architectural Digest.

After being discharged from the Navy, where he served on the “Iowa” he married Thelma Cousens, and they had two children, a son, Henry Jr., and a daughter, Pamela. Both children survive him.

His wife Thelma died unexpectedly in 1971.

Henry remarried in 1977, to Elaine Stewart Nedeau, a widow, and he rebuilt the home they shared until his death.

Together, they traveled the world and found that life could re-begin at fifty.

Henry leaves nine grandchildren, and became the beloved grandfather of Ethan and Erik Nedeau.

There will be graveside services at the Evergreen Cemetery, where Henry’s ashes will be placed at his first wife’s gravesite.

The services will be held Tuesday, March 9th, at 2 p.m. and be officiated by Jim Stewart of Owasso, Okla.

William H. Weare, Sr.

Cape Neddick – William Henry Weare, Sr., age 84, formerly of Pine Hill Road, Cape neddick, passed away July 2, 2004 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough.

Born in New Bedford, MA on February 6, 1920, he was a son of George D. and Helen Weare.

Raised on the family farm in Cape Neddick, he graduated from York High School in 1936 and Phillips Exeter Academy in 1938.

He attended Harvard University for three years where he was an accomplished lightweight boxer and contributor to the Harvard Review Literary Magazine.

He subsequently enlisted in the US Army and served in England and France as a Corporal in aviation ordinance.

He was on a ship in Marseille awaiting transit to Burma when the Japanese surrendered.

Consequently, his ship became one of the earliest to return to Boston.

During his career as a salesman he worked for H.A. Johnson, Burgess Fobes, and Martin-Seynour.

He was well known to his customers all over New England as an entertaining storyteller.

He was also active in community affairs.

At various points in his life he was a trustee of York Hospital, the York School District, and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.

He was also a member of the Ocean Masonic Lodge #142 in Wells.

Bill was predeceased by his wife June, whom he married October 6, 1943 in Ogunquit, and his younger brother, John.

Surviving are his five children, Michael Weare and his wife Patricia, Stephen Weare, and David Weare all of Cape Neddick; Betsey Jane Weare and her husband Chet Goon of Cataumet, MA., and William Weare, Jr. of Iowa City, Iowa.

Bill, self proclaimed “Handsomest man in York County”, leaves seven grandchildren, John-Henry, Jessica, George, Maggie, Hana, Cassandra and Helena Weare.

Also surviving are his sister, Barbara H. Grover and his aunt, Gladys M. Shum, both of Cape Neddick.

A funeral will be held at 1p.m. Wednesday, July 7th, at the Ogunquit Baptist Church.

Burial will follow at First Parish cemetery in York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Box 815, Ogunquit, ME 03907-0815.
