Roy C. Gordon
March 09, 2004
Kennebunk

Roy Gordon was born in Centralia, Illinois on April 9, 1925. Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in the local community college, but left during the first year to serve in the Army. He was assigned to the 42nd Division (Rainbow Division) in the 222nd Regiment, where he served as a mortar gunner in the weapons platoon. His unit deployed to France in autumn of 1944 and was immediately put into combat. He fought in the front lines for over 250 days without a break as the Rainbow Division advanced through France and Germany, experiencing some of the hardest fighting of the war. One of the most affecting of his wartime experiences occurred when his company was the spearhead for the liberation of Dachau concentration camp on April 29, 1945, in which he was one of the first Americans to enter the camp.
After the war, he returned to Centralia to continue his college education. During this time he met and married Jimmie Joan Reed on August 1, 1948 and transferred to the University of Colorado to complete his degree. He graduated from the University of Colorado in 1949 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and was recruited by the Research Division of the Armour Company. While there, he became a nationally recognized leader in the early research of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
In 1953 he was chosen by Armour to be one of nine Americans to represent the US in the first class of the International School of Nuclear Science and Engineering at the University of Chicago at Argonne National Laboratory. In 1955 he was chosen as one of six Americans to represent the US in President Eisenhower’s Atoms for Peace Program.
In 1956, he worked with the Army in the study of the use of radiation in the preservation of food. Through 1959 he continued to work as a consultant at the US Army Irradiation Planning Agency in Washington D.C. In 1959 he returned to civilian business and transferred to American Cyanamid Company to assist the company in its early steps with production of acrylic sheeting, and transferred to the company facility in Sanford, Maine. This facility was incorporated into the formation of CYRO in Sanford, Maine which is now the major producer of acrylic products in the world. He continued at CYRO until his retirement after 32 years with the company, serving as Senior Technical Fellow. After retirement from CYRO, he was asked to serve as a consultant in the International Executive Service Corps and in this capacity made several government-sponsored consultation visits to Egypt and Brazil to provide technical assistance to local businesses.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed his work as an engineer and delighted in the challenge of solving problems through the use of technology. Outside of work he had a wide variety of interests and talents. He was an accomplished pianist and composed a number of original works for the piano. He loved to read and to learn, and could speak knowledgeably on any number of topics, from Greek history to human evolution, modern politics to musical theory. He loved to discuss books, politics, and the issues of the day with family and friends, both in person and through spirited internet discussions. He was a life-long photographer, with a good eye for landscapes and a knack for catching the decisive moment in portraits. Another passion was golf; he was a long-time member of Webhannet Golf Club, playing with a regular foursome of old friends.
A lifelong Democrat, he was a consistent supporter of liberal social concepts of civil rights and justice. He was also a strong supporter of American Armed Forces, taking great pride in his military service, and in his later years, enjoyed attending reunions of the Rainbow Division swapping stories with fellow soldiers.
He served on the Kennebunk Planning and Appeals Board, and served as a member of the Library Board for many years, and was a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by Jimmie, his wife of 55 years; three sons, Stephen Gordon and wife Ruthie of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Michael Gordon and wife Nancy of Groton, Massachusetts, and David Gordon and wife Lisa of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; three grandchildren, Sarah Gordon, Andrew Gordon, and Nathaniel Gordon; and a sister, Marylou Closs of Chicago, Illinois.
