Mae Gertrude Dunn Flaherty

Mae Dunn Flaherty died April 22, 2003 at the age of 101.

She had been a resident of Bradford on the Common in Kennebunk, ME for the past three years.

Mrs. Flaherty was born January 6, 1902 in Stamford, Ct, the daughter of the late Catherine Kane Dunn and James F. Dunn of Stamford.

She was the widow of John F. Flaherty who died in 1975.

She was the oldest of seven children which all pre-deceased her.

Mrs. Flaherty was a graduate of Stamford High School.

She attended the Traphagen School of Design in New York City and later was employed by Conde Nast Designing Covers for Vogue Patterns.

She also led one of the first teams of Volunteers at St. Joseph' Hospital in Stamford, Ct.

Mrs. Flaherty is survived by her daughter Sheila F. Comerford of Kennebunkport, ME, three grandchildren Charles J. Comerford, Amy L. Conly and Elizabeth C. Worcester, two great grandchildren Emily Gregg Worcester and Anna Dunn Worcester. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate her life will be held 2 PM Saturday April 26th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk with the Reverend Laurent LaPlante officiating the service.

Interment will be May 8th at 1PM in St. Johns Cemetery, Darien, CT.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Spaulding Youth Center, PO Box 189, Tilton, NH. 03276 or to the River Tree Arts, 35 Western Ave. Kennebunk, Me 04043 in Mrs. Flaherty’s memory.

Marie J. Normand

Marie J. Normand, 90 years, formerly of Sanford and Kennebunk, Maine died Thursday April 3, at the Washington House in Alexandria, Virginia after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Louis L. Normand who died in 1987.

Mrs. Normand was born in St. Rose du Digelis, Quebec, Canada March 20, 1913 a daughter of Francis Xavier and Pauline Lavoie Michaud.

She attended Schools in Quebec and came to the United States as a young girl.

She and her late husband lived in Sanford, Maine prior to moving to the Kennebunk’s.

She was employed for several years with the former Kesslen Shoe Company and in later years with Morning Star Corporation both in Kennebunk.

She was a communicant of St. Martha’s in Kennebunk.

She moved to the Alexandria, Virginia several years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, and one sister Rose Potvin.

Mrs. Normand is survived by two sons Louis L. Normand, Jr. of Florham Park, New Jersey and Paul E. Normand of Alexandria, VA.

Four Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8PM.

A Funeral Mass will be said 10AM Monday April 7, 2003 at St. Martha’s Church, Portland Rd. Kennebunk with Rev. Laurent LaPlante officiating.

Interment in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, Me.

Mark D. Ryan

Mark D Ryan 46 years, a son of Maj. (USAF Ret.) and Mrs. Vincent J. Ryan of Wells, ME., died suddenly August 9th, 2003 in Alexander City, AL.

Mr. Ryan was born in Bangor, Maine on April 16, 1957 a son of Vincent J. and Anne M. (Dutille) Ryan.

Mark graduated as salutatorian of his class from Benton High School in LA in 1975, earning a 4 yr ROTC scholarship.

He was a Micro-Biology Major at Tulane University where he graduated with honors in 1979.

He then served in the United States Army for the next eleven years.

He was assigned as the Division Chemical Officer during a tour of duty in Germany and was Airborne as Air-Assault qualified earning the rank of Captain before leaving the Army to assume position with PEMCO Inc. in Birmingham, AL.

He spent the reminder of his life with Pemco in the Hazardous Materials field, managing both the main PEMCO Haz. Mat. Division in Birmingham and a satellite plant in Florida.

His associates thought very highly of him and delighted in calling him “Capt. Chemical” when in informal settings.

His articles on the Environment were published in several professional journals throughout the United States.

Mr. Ryan was a lifelong Roman Catholic and was involved in many laity functions such as Choir, Lay Reader, Announcer, leading singles groups & the planning and building of a new sanctuary in Birmingham, St. Francis Xavier.

He is survived by his parents of Wells, ME., two daughters Kristy and Jessica of Birmingham, AL and Tacoma, WA, a brother and his sister in law-Matthew and Kimberly Ryan of Atlanta, GA., and a sister and brother in law- Michael & Kathleen LeBlanc of Houston, TX.

Nieces and Nephews include Jason &Jennifer LeBlanc of Houston, TX and Marie, Daniel and Colleen Ryan of Atlanta, GA.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 PM Monday August 11th St. Francis Xavier Church in Birmingham, AL where a funeral mass will be held at 7PM at the Church.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday August 13th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 111 Chapel Road Wells, Maine.

Funeral Mass will be held at 9 AM Thursday August 14th at the St. Mary’s Church Eldridge Road, Wells with the Reverend Father Joseph Ford and Reverend Father Paul Coughlin officiating.

Interment with Military Honors will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Meta Libby Rust

Meta Libby Rust, age 80 years, resident of York, ME died peacefully Tuesday April 15 at her home after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her husband Myron D. Rust in 1984.

Mrs. Rust was born in South Portland, ME January 7, 1923 a daughter of Carl Clarence and Lillian Marie Nielsen Libby.

She attended South Portland Schools and graduated from South Portland High School Class of 1940.

She then went on to the former Maine General Hospital School of Nursing class of 1944.

She was employed at Maine General Hospital and Mass. General Hospital in Boston for several years while her late husband attended Law School.

Mrs. Rust then returned to York where she worked as an R.N. York Hospital where she served as Supervisor of the Operating Room, the Recovery Room, Central Supply and the Emergency Room.

She retired from Nursing in 1984.

She was a member and served on the board of Deacon’s of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach; a member and Past Matron of Fadette Chapter, Order of Eastern Star of York and served as Mother Advisor of the Rainbow Girls Assemble # 23.

She was an active member of the York Republican Committee and a member of Gateway to Maine Republican Women’s Club of York County.

She served on the Board of Trustees of the York Health Foundation and was a member of the York Hospital Nurses Club.

She enjoyed music and playing her piano and organ.

Following her retirement she also enjoyed golf and traveling.

Her husband, two brothers Kenneth Nielsen Libby and Richard Mortensen Libby and a nephew Allan E. Libby and his wife Linda predeceased her.

She is survived by her son John Davis Rust and daughter Libby Karen Rust both of York.

One brother Frederick Clifford Libby and his wife Joan of Morehead City NC, Sister in law Phyllis M. Libby of Dunedin, Fla. and sister in law Pauline T. Libby of Morgan Hill, CA. Several nieces and nephews also survive: Kenneth N. Libby and his wife Karen and their sons Matt and Andrew; F. Clifford Libby and his wife Barbara and their sons Carl and Erik; Hiram A. Libby and his wife Caren and his sons Hiram II and Nicholas; Fred Libby; Allan E. Libby II; Marshall D. Rust and his wife Almeda, Douglas Rust, Brian Rust; Lorna Libby Kocci and her husband Douglas and her children Scott Barrett and Katherine Barrett; Diana Libby and her daughter Maylee; Michelle Libby Neves; and two cousins Evelyn N. Cox and Iver Clifford Nielsen.

Graveside services will be held 12 Noon on Saturday April 26, at the First Parish cemetery in York with the Reverend Patricia Smith officiating the Service. Family flowers only please.

Nella (Barber) Burnham

Nella Louise (Barber) Burnham died on Sunday, August 8, 2004, in Kennebunk, Maine.

She was ninety-four. born and raised in Brunswick, Maine, she was the daughter of Edith Turner and Henry Barber, an employee of the Maine Central Railroad. As a child, Nella would often accompany her father to his work at the Brunswick railroad station.

Mrs. Burnham was a graduate of Brunswick High School and attended Wheaton College.

For fifty-six years she gave her assistance and support to the career of her husband the late Philip E. Burnham, a graduate of Bowdoin College, a teacher and Vice-rector at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and head of the Fessenden School in West Newton, Massachusetts.

She is survived by her two sons, Philip E. Burnham, Jr. of Newton Centre, Massachusetts, and Jonathan Barber Burnham of Sutton, New Hampshire, and by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Burnham was a lively and loving person. She enjoyed the symphony and the theatre, participating in numerous amateur theatrical productions at Bowdoin and at St. Paul's.

She was a friend to many of the students who came to St. Paul's and to their families as well.

She served on the Altar Guild at the School and as a volunteer at the Concord Hospital and the New Hampshire League of Arts and Crafts.

She enjoyed traveling in England, where she spent a year in Cambridge and visited the village where her father had lived as a boy.

She was an avid reader, of newspapers, the New Yorker and literature, coming to know such writers as Wallace Stegner and Robert Frost.

Mrs. Burnham enjoyed and celebrated her roots in Maine, her friends and her family.

Only her long descent into Alzheimer's deprived her of what Frost called her "lover's quarrel with the world."

Patricia J. Fulton

Patricia J. Fulton, age 74, resident of Blackberry Hill Road, died Saturday, April 19 at the Dover Rehabilitation Center in Dover after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Fulton was born in New York City, NY January 2, 1929 a daughter of Rene Fulton.

She has been an active antique dealer in southern Maine for over 40 years. She is a member and former President of the Berwick Historical Society and member and former President of the Maine Antiques Dealers Association.

Mrs. Fulton is survived by her daughter Nancy W. Fulton of Berwick.

Friends may call at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester St., Berwick, ME Thursday April 24 from 1 to 3 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 PM.

R. Howard Eldridge

KENNEBUNK - R. Howard Eldridge, 78, of Sea Road, Kennebunk, ME passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6th at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, ME. He was born in Boston, MA on December 6th, 1924, son of Roderick and Carrie Eldridge of Harwichport, Cape Cod.

He worked at the Boston Shipyard as an electrician on LST’s during WWII. After the war, he worked at Simplex Wire & Cable of Cambridge for 25 years, which brought him to Southern Maine in 1970. After settling in Kennebunk, he continued to work for Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick until his retirement.

He impacted the lives of many with his untouchable sense of humor and mix of compassion and concern. He was a man of high morals whose never-ending generosity towards his family and friends will forever be remembered. Founder of the Walpole Ski Club, he was an avid life-long skier, part-time golfer and enjoyed walks on the beach with his Basset Hound, Thunder. He was a purveyor of “fine” antiquities and his alternative methods of home repair will continue to be legendary.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen (Hanken) Eldridge of Kennebunk; his sister, Evelyn (Eldridge) Robinson and her husband Wayne of Harwichport, Cape Cod; his sister-in-law, Louise Harrington and her husband Bill of Denmark, ME; son, Ron Eldridge of Kennebunkport; son, Hank Eldridge and his wife Tina of Arundel; daughter Cookie Eldridge of Kennebunk; daughter Heidi Dyer and her husband Gregg of Medford, MA; six grandchildren, Sean, Kevin, Carol, Keith, Kelsey, Annaliese; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, April 11th at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, Maine, where a 12 PM Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 12th. Interment will take place at a later date in Harwichport, Cape Cod.

Robert B. Roche

Robert B. Roche, 71, passed away peacefully at his home on April 6, 2005, surrounded by his family.

A retired school teacher, administrator, coach, and sports official of over 40 years.

Robert is survived by his wife, seven children, and ten grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Wells, Maine on Saturday, April 16, 2005, at 10:00 AM.

Per Robert Roche’s request, a Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in keeping with his lifelong pursuit of promoting education and career opportunities for students.

Robert M. Lyna Jr.

Robert M. Lyna, Jr. age 56 years died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at his residence on North Street, Kennebunkport, Me. He was the husband of Patricia Gunn Lyna.

Mr. Lyna was born in Portland, Me Jan. 19, 1947 a son of Robert M. and Corinne Bartlett Lyna. He graduated from South Portland High School. Following his graduation he entered South Maine Technical College in the Culinary Arts course. He then went on to Graduate from Cornell University and then came back to teach in the Culinary Arts Dept at SMTC for over 35 years.

He served as Chief of the South Portland Police Reserve Unit for several years. He also was employed during his off time at the Scarborough Police Dept. the Kennebunk Police Dept and the Kennebunkport Police Dept. Mr. Lyna served on the security detail during the time that the Late Sec. of State, Edmund S. Muskie served his Country as Sec of State.

From 1974 thru 2000 he and his wife owned and operated the Riverview Restaurant in Kennebunkport. For the past two years he was a consultant at Congdon’s Restaurant in Wells, Me. During his High School days he was employed at Friendly’s Ice Cream in South Portland and at Days Jewelry Store.

He was a member of the Irish American Club, The Irish Heritage Center; he also enjoyed his trips to Ireland. Mr. Lyna also acted as Dancing Bear on the TV. Show Captain Kangaroo of which he enjoyed to the delight of his Grandchildren and many others.

He is survived by his wife Patricia Gunn Lyna of Kennebunkport, two step-sons Michael Brannen and Peter Brannen both of Kennebunk, one Brother Daniel Lyna of Cape May, N.J., four sisters Cheryl Mandell, Susan Mandell both of La. Leslie McVey of Exeter, N.H. and Ann Laturno of Maryland, three grandchildren Sean Brannen, Jon Cluff and Evan Ward. Also survive.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, Me Friday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 9 AM Saturday from St. Martha’s Church, Portland Rd. Kennebunk with the Rev. Laurent Laplante officiating the Mass. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland, Me.

Should friends desire memorials may be made to the Irish Heritage Center, PO Box 1683 Portland, Maine 04104-1683 in Mr. Lyna’s memory.

WELLS - Ruth Irene Bennett Johnson, 85 years a resident of Bourne Avenue, Wells, Maine, formerly of Hubbardton, Vermont and Worcester, Mass. died Sunday April 27th after a brief illness.

Mrs. Johnson was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, March 25, 1918 a daughter of Alfred and Agnes Mary Hill Young. She attended Schools in Vermont. She was employed with the Norton Co. in Worcester, MA for over thirty- seven years. She then returned to Hubbardton, VT where she was a member of the Adoniram Chapter #22, Order of the Eastern Star. She also owned and operated the Woolens 1806 Sheep Farm in Hubbardton, VT, prior to moving to Wells, ME in 2001.

She enjoyed knitting and was an accomplished Artist painting on Tin and Canvas.

She was pre-deceased by her parents and her adoptive parents George S. and Ethel M. Bennett of Manchester, Vt. And one Sister Mina Young-Didbalis in 1986,

Three nieces Mary Arduca of Brandon, VT, Joan Didzbalis of Worcester, MA and Jane Didzbalis of Moody, ME; a great nephew, Joseph Arduca; and two great-great neices.

Private Memorial Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Should friend’s desire Memorials may be made in Mrs. Johnson’s memory to the Seacoast Hospice, 1039 Islington Street, Portsmouth, NH. 03801, or the Animal Welfare Society, Inc., P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.
