Christine Bates, age 98 of Berwick Street, died Monday, February 14, 2005 at her residence.

She was born in Berwick on April 16, 1906, the daughter of Noah W. and Nettie L. Toothaker Randall.

Christine attended local schools and was a homemaker all of her life.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and its Women’s Society.

Her husband, William E. Bates, died in February of 1988. She is also predeceased by a sister, Agnes Randall who died in 1989.

She is survived by a son Roger; a sister, Ruth Randall of Berwick; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Clara Russell

Clara Russell, age 85 of Berwick, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Frisbee Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Dover-Foxcroft, ME on December 3, 1919, a daughter of Talmadge and Abbie Dickey Crabtree.

She graduated from Dover-Foxcroft High School and was a homemaker all of her life.

She is predeceased by her husband, Albert E. Russell, Sr. who died in 1993. She is also predeceased by a son, Warren Russell; three brothers, Edmond Crabtree, John Crabtree and Vinal Crabtree; two sisters, Ellen Card and Anna Crabtree.

Surviving are two sons, Albert E. Russell, Jr. and his wife, Monique of Lewiston, and David N. Russell and his wife, Patricia of Berwick; two daughters, Barbara Straffin and her husband, Larry of North Berwick, and Hilda Davis and her husband, Willis, Sr. of Rochester, NH; a brother, Charles Perry Crabtree of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Etta Moran of Frankfort, Maine; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1:30pm to 3pm Friday, February 18, 2005 at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, followed by a 3pm funeral service officiated by Rev. Mark Rideout.

Burial will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, ME.

Constance Sheedy Gray

Constance Sheedy Gray, 78, of Goose Rocks Beach, died Wednesday after a long illness at home lovingly surrounded by family members.

Constance was born October 4, 1926 in Groton, MA, a daughter of Winthrop and C. Louise Moore Sheedy. Constance graduated from Brimmer and May Boarding High School in Boston and attended Wheelock College, also in Boston. She taught Kindergarten classes after College.

On September 25, 1954 Constance married Eugene Gray and devoted the rest of her life to raising a wonderful and loving family. She took great pride in her children and maintained a very close relationship with them through their adult years.

Constance also enjoyed nature. She was an active member of the Groton Garden Club and enjoyed her flower gardens in Groton and after moving in 1987, Kennebunkport. She was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed watching them at the numerous feeding stations around her yard. She especially loved her pets both Golden Retrievers and her cats. She is leaving behind her very special dog Heidi.

Constance is predeceased by her sister, Mary Louise Wiewel.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Eugene; sons Eugene R. Gray, Jr. of Eden Prairie, Minn., Peter Lawrence Gray of Kennebunkport, and Winthrop Sheedy Gray of Kennebunkport; daughter Louise Ann Spiczka of Groton, MA, and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 PM on Sunday, February 27 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be in Groton Cemetery, in Groton, MA.

Dawn Uchenick

Kennebunk resident Dawn Evelyn (Williams) Uchenick, 72, died at home on February 24th with her husband, Mel and two children, Anne and David. at her bedside after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on October 11, 1932 in Akron, Ohio where she graduated from Garfield High School, as well as having attended Akron University. On finishing her schooling she moved to New York City where she held several secretarial positions and met her husband,

After their marriage, Dawn, as a result of her husband's many corporate transfers, lived in many parts of the country. Despite the stress and difficulties of moving; so often, she was able to quickly make new friends and adjust to her new surroundings with the result that she was able to make each move an adventure and lea ruing experience for the family, thereby making the transition considerably more comfortable for them. However, she often said that her happiest years were the last 14 when she and her husband moved to Kennebunk. She particularly enjoyed the quality of life that Kennebunk and Maine provided as well as the friendliness of those with whom she became acquainted.

She was a devoted and ardent member of the Lower Village Mothers Club, an organization which raises money for local scholarships. She was able to put her many quilting and craft-making abilities to use, along with those of her many Mothers Club friends, in their joint endeavors to raise scholarship funds. Her association with this organization provided her with the utmost satisfaction and joy. She was also an active and respected member of the Women? Coastal Investment Group and a volunteer worker for the annual "Mary's Walk" event, which raises funds for the Maine Cancer Foundation. She was also a past member of the Evergreen Quilting Group as well as having had performed volunteer assignments for the Brick Store museum and York County United Way.

Dawn is survived by her mother, Mildred Vivian Logan of Logansport, Indiana, to whom she was devoted, her husband Mel, daughter Anne of Kennebunk, son David of Westford, MA and her niece Ginger Lynn Luzio, Pickerington, Ohio. Also, Dawn had always remembered with fondness and affection, her loving foster parents, Locy and John Tawney, now deceased.

A celebration of her life for her friends and family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lower Village Mothers Club, 117 Port Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043

E. Barbara Simpson

Wells-E. Barbara 'Barbie' Simpson, 81, died Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at her residence.

Barbie was born on February 2, 1923 in Berlin, N.H. a daughter of Leon M. and Dorothy 'Dot' (Metcalfe) Swett. She graduated form Somersworth High School and went on to receive a nursing degree from Maine General Nursing School.

After graduation a close friend Cay O’Brien introduced her to Edward H. Simpson from Portland. A life long romance was started and they were married on December 20, 1947. Over the next ten years they had three children.

During her nursing career she worked at Maine General Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Framingham M.A. Nursing Home, and near the end of her career the York County Visiting Nurses.

Barbie loved to read. She also like to travel, ski, and play cards every Saturday. Most of all she loved her husband and children. When asked she said, “I am most proud of the three good children I raised and the help I have given as a nurse.”

She is predeceased by her Husband Eddie in August of 2002, a sister Sally, and two brothers Paul and Edwin.

Barbie is survived by two sons, Peter Simpson and his wife Priscilla of Rockport, M.E., Scott Simpson and his wife Nancy of Wells, M.E., a daughter Lee Simpson of Biddeford, M.E., seven grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, January 15, 2005 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, Maine. The Reverend Herbert Henry officiating.

Elizabeth P. Connolly

Kennebunk- Elizabeth Phare Connolly, 89, a resident of Huntington Common, formerly of Goose Rocks Beach, ME died Tuesday, February 22, 2005 in her home.

Elizabeth was born in Melrose, MA on July 31, 1915 the daughter of Ralph and Bertie MacGregor Stantial. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1933 and Simmons College, Boston in 1937.

Elizabeth enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and was assigned to Washington D.C. from 1944-1946. In 1946 Elizabeth married Martin J. Connolly and they settled in North Reading, MA. Elizabeth was active in the North Reading Garden Club and the League of Women Voters. She was also one of the founders of the Aldersgate Methodist Church in North Reading.

Elizabeth and Martin retired to Goose Rocks Beach. Elizabeth enjoyed gardening, reading and the beach. She was also very active in the South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband Martin Connolly; sons Paul R. Connolly of North Reading, MA, Robert M. Connolly of Kittery, ME, and Peter B. Connolly of Somers, NY; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Interment will be in the Maine Veteran’s cemetery in the spring.

Douglas A. Emmons

Douglas A. Emmons 61 years a resident of Mills Road Cape Porpoise, Me died Friday February 25, 2005 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Me.
He was born in Biddeford on March 17, 1943 a son of Herbert W. and Florence E. Perkins Emmons and graduated from Kennebunk High School the class of 1961.

He was employed by the Honeycomb Systems/Valmet of Biddeford for 41 years.

Douglas was a long time member of the Cape Porpoise Fire Department from 1961 to 1979 where he was the chief from 1974 –1979, member of the Arundel Lodge No.76 of Kennebunkport and member of the Church on the Cape of Cape Porpoise.

Douglas loved being with family and friends. Loved to play cribbage, loved to play games with his only grandson Mitchell and enjoyed spending time at his camp in North Windham. He and his wife Betty going to Saturday Night Dancing from 1964 to 1991.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Howard Emmons.

He is surviving by his wife of 41 years, Betty L. Pierce Emmons of Cape Porpoise, two daughters Laurie J. Hatch and her husband Scott of Arundel and Cindy A Poirier and her husband Stephen of Sanford and a sister Rose Pierce of Kennebunkport One grandson Mitchell Douglas Poirier and two step grandchildren Freeman and Robert Hatch.

Visiting Hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday March 2, 2005 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk with a Masonic Services will be held at 7 :30 PM.

Funeral Service will be held 1 PM Thursday at the Chapel. Interment will be following in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Dorothy J. McGlone

Berwick, Maine

Dorothy J. McGlone 73 years a resident of 160 Rochester Street, Berwick died Wednesday February 23, 2005 at the Dover Rehab and Living Center following a period of failing health.

She was born in Wolfeboro, NH on August 25, 1931 a daughter of Willard and Hazel Davis (Perry) Jones and attended Berwick Schools.
Dorothy has been a resident of Dover most of her life before moving back to Berwick.

She had been employed with Miller Shoe for many years. She would sometimes bartend at her son’s bar The Buck’s Café.

She enjoyed being with young people and just having fun. We ‘ll all miss her smile and fun loving personality.

Dorothy lived her life for the one thing she loved the most her TWO BOYS, Mike and Rick.

She will be sadly missed by her good friend Dennis Healy of Gonic, NH and her dog Spanky and cat Chance.

She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Rosaire Rocheleau and second husband Edward McGlone.

Survivors include her two sons Mike Rocheleau and his wife Robin of Fernandina Beach, FLA, and Rick Rocheleau and Lynne Newton of Gonic, NH, grandchildren Zack, Jessie, Amber, Ryan Callahan and five great grandchildren, one brother Dick Jones and his wife Harriett and family of CA. two aunts Sandra Hobart and her husband Phil and Lillian and her husband Frank Silvestre both of Berwick.

Her son Rick would like to thank all the Staff and Nurses at Dover Rehab for their wonderful Care and Compassion also many thanks to Sanda Hobart for being there, when I needed her!

Private graveside services will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick in the spring.
