Ernest Fred Foss
February 07, 2005
Berwick

Ernest Fred Foss, lovingly called 'Grandpa' by all, 76, of 308 Cranberry Meadow Rd., Berwick, Maine died suddenly on February 7, 2005.

He was born in Somersworth, NH on November 26, 1928, to Amos and Zelia Worster Foss. He was raised in Somersworth, graduated from Somersworth High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.

He worked as a machinist at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years, retiring in 1983. Not one to stay idle, grandpa started a small construction business that kept him busy for many years. Following his second retirement, he spent his time doing what he was probably always meant to do - haying (endlessly), farming and tinkering with his many tractors. Grandpa could fix just about anything.

He was a 'jack-of-all-trades' and a man of many and varied interests and talents. I'm sure that many people didn't know that he starred in a television commercial. Flying was one of his passions. He was a skilled pilot and shared his love and knowledge of aviation with many friends. He was an avid reader sometimes reading a book a day - he particularly loved books about the past, wars, history and early american life and would often enlighten all of us over coffee with all of the 'facts he had just discovered.'

Music was another of his passions. He learned to play the drums at an early age and kept on drumming right up until his death, playing with the Epsom Town Band and the Sanford Band. He rarely missed a parade and the summer concerts at the Rochester Bandstand were one of his favorites.

He liked to cook, mostly as he said because he liked to eat. He often spoiled us at morning coffee with 'homemade (right from scratch) goodies.' And it goes without saying that everyone will miss 'Grandpa's incredible whoopee pies.'

But the thing that he enjoyed most was farming - having his few farm animals, but most particularly haying. He absolutely loved to hay. He started getting ready in April and couldn't wait to get out on the fields with his tractors to cut and bale the hay.

He is survived by three sisters: Gladys and husband, Robert Dolby of Stuart, Florida; Mona and husband, Gerard Faucher, of Somersworth, NH; and Verna and husband, Arthur Thyng of Boynton Beach, Florida. He leaves five children: Mary Wilburn of Ocala, Florida; Pat Foss and Audrey Foss of Berwick, Maine, Kristie Smith of Winslow, Maine and a son, Matthew Foss who is presently teaching in Africa; along with stepchildren, grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He also leaves several cherished friends who he considered family: Dan and Sally McCue of York, Maine, Carroll Nelson of Lebanon, Maine, Jeff Mortensen of Berwick, Maine and Brian Turner of Rochester, NH.

Grandpa was a man of little words, great integrity, and a heart of gold who touched many lives. He lived his life to the fullest exactly the way he wanted.

In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at Springhill in South Berwick, Maine on Sunday, February 20, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Everyone is invited. The family encourages you to bring photos, memorabilia, or your favorite 'grandpa story' to share will all in remembrance of him.

Frances (Miele) Rahart
January 03, 2005
Kennebunk

Frances (Miele) Rahart passed away on January 3, 2005, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, after a long battle with lung disease.

Born in Sloatsburg, New York on February 20, 1919, she was the daughter of Italian immigrants, Carmen and Pasqualina (Sorice) Miele.

Frances was an energetic homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and visiting with them. She had many friends and was always there when someone needed her support. She was a great cook who could make a wonderful meal out of very few ingredients. Frances always marveled at all of the things she had seen in her lifetime. She witnessed so much history and so many changes in technology. She was born when Woodrow Wilson was President, lived through the great depression, saw television for the first time at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York City, and got her drivers license when she was almost 60 years old.

A long time resident of Suffern, New York, Frances married Andrew P. Rahart of Mahwah, New Jersey on April 24, 1943 while he was home on leave from World War II. They were married for 47 years, until he pre-deceased her in 1990.

Frances was also pre-deceased by a sister, Raphaela “Rae” (Miele) Smith and by her brother, Carmen J. Miele.

Survivors include her son, John P. Rahart and his wife, Donna Rahart of Bosque, New Mexico, her daughter, Rosemary R. Lavoie and her husband, David Lavoie of Kennebunk, Maine and four grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Frances was especially proud of her four grandchildren, Travis Rahart, Michael Lavoie, Jessica Lavoie and Maggie Lavoie. They will all miss her kindness, generosity, sense of humor, practical advice and love.

She was a devout member of the Sacred Heart Parish of Suffern, New York, the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Mahwah, New Jersey and later in her life she was a member of St. Martha’s in Kennebunk, Maine. She was a very spiritual person and to this and God, she felt she owed her long and happy life.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be held later this spring in New York.

Internment will follow at that time in MaryRest cemetery in Darlington, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to a charity or church of your choice or to:

The American Lung Association of Maine, 122 State Street, Augusta, Maine 04330.

Frances M. Harrison
February 02, 2005
Kennebunk

Frances McCarthy Harrison, 76, a resident of Kennebunk, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2005, surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 9, 1928 in Somerville, Massachusetts, the daughter of John Francis and Frances Donovan McCarthy.

She grew up in Arlington Heights, where she attended elementary school. Fran graduated from Marycliff Academy, and continued her education at Emmanuel College in Boston, earning her bachelor’s degree in English literature. She received her master’s degree in education from Boston University.

Fran taught elementary school in Medford until her retirement at marriage, as required by school department policy. She and her late husband, Frank, were married on June 28, 1953 at St. Camilla’s Church in Arlington.

Fran and Frank moved to Maine with their eldest child, Steve, settling in Cape Elizabeth before moving to the home they occupied in Kennebunk for 46 years. There they raised eight children with a menagerie of pets in an atmosphere of unlimited love, supplemented with liberal doses of humor, clear expectations for all, and an unshakable faith that any of life’s challenges would work out for the best. Fran always made room at any meal for her children’s friends. Her home hosted innumerable sleepover parties, clubhouses, backyard carnivals, ballet and theatre productions, water balloon fights, “rallies” and games of “Claw”. Fran’s family expanded each summer with the arrival of children from New York City through the Fresh Air Fund – for many years her home was blessed with as many as four children from New York enjoying a Maine summer.

Fran spent her life raising her children and volunteering in the community. She served as a member and vice-chairman of the school board of MSAD #71, the Kennebunk Youth Services Commission, the Great Books Program for the Kennebunk schools, as a Cub Scout den mother, classroom mother, religious education teacher and as a volunteer for FISH, Webber Hospital, the Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the Catholic Women’s Guild and the Kennebunk Nursing Home.

Fran was predeceased by her beloved husband, Frank, in June, 2004 and by her eldest child, Steve, in December, 2003. Her brothers, James McCarthy of Lexington, MA and Jack McCarthy of Medford, MA, also predeceased her. Fran is survived by her seven remaining children, Frances Harrison and James Harrison of Kennebunk, Anne Harrison Jordan of South Portland, David Harrison, Mary Alice Harrison and Eric Harrison of Kennebunk, and Beth Kissinger of Hopkinton, NH. She is also survived by her dozen grandchildren, Leigh Harrison, Elizabeth Harrison Peplaw, Will Harrison, Robert Jordan, John Harrison, Linda Harrison, Emily Harrison, Katherine Kissinger, Katie Jordan, Meghan Kissinger, Christy Harrison Allard and Lily Kissinger. She was particularly close to her cousin, Mary Hartingh of Kennebunk.
