She was born on July 2, 1916 in Springfield, MA., the daughter of Lewis H. and Georgianna (Lafferty) Perkins, Sr., and had resided in Springfield, in Lily Bay on Moosehead Lake, ME., and in Amherst, MA before retiring to Kennebunkport, ME. in 1983.

Mrs. French was a 1932-½ graduate of Classical High School, Springfield, MA. Later, while working, she took courses at American International College, Springfield, to prepare to attend the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, (then Mass. State College), at age 29. At U.Mass. she played on the varsity field hockey team, actively participated in the college’s efforts and successes in becoming a state university, and became part of the School of Home Economics’ Foods & Nutrition Research Diet Squad and it’s cook. The research contributed internationally to the understanding of the body’s use of nutrients. She continued to work her way through college and was graduated in 1949 with a B.S. from the Dept. of Home Economics Foods & Nutrition, with a minor in chemistry. In 1957 she was elected to the U.Mass Chapter of the Phi Tau Sigma Honorary Society for Food Science, and in 1959 to the Massachusetts Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi devoted to the promotion of research in science. The Georgia Perkins Food Shop on State St. , Springfield operated successfully, employing others including friends & family into WWII until it was no longer possible to get needed ingredients or compete with war work wages. Her experience & credibility placed her at the then famous Highland Hotel in Springfield, MA. After college and in the early 1950’s, Mrs. French and her husband co-owned The Lily Bay House & Cabins on Moosehead Lake, near Greenville, ME. Her cooking & baking increased their clientele. Upon return to Springfield, she became employed as a dietician at Mass. Mutual Life Insurance Co. After the couple moved their family to Amherst, she was employed by the U.Mass. School of Home Economics to perform nutrition research & teach. In 1962, she was actively involved in training one of the first groups Peace Corps trainees before they left for Africa. She later transferred to the College of Foods & Natural Resources at U.Mass.’ West Experiment Station as an analytical chemist testing seeds feeds, and fertilizers. Mrs. French retired professor emeritus from U.Mass. in 1981.

A person of deep faith, she was a dedicated member of Grace Episcopal Church, Amherst, MA. She served on numerous committees including the Vestry, taught Sunday school, and with her husband & others were the church’s jr. high youth group leaders for several years. She was also very active on local committees serving the Amherst area school system. In Kennebunkport, she was a member of the First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport, served on and was past-president of the Ladies’ Society, wrote the church newsletter, and was an active volunteer for and participant in numerous year-round events.

A proud and registered voter wherever she lived, including SunBridge, Mrs. French was an active voice in state & national politics who often was in contact with her representatives and supported causes representing issues of conscience. She supported her country’s armed service people even when she couldn’t support the politics. With her social conscience she was a voice for the less fortunate. She fought for others’ civil rights when it wasn’t popular to do so. She was keen on health education. She was an enthusiastic participant at UNE’s aquatic exercise program. She also served as a literacy volunteer. She turned many of her energies to supporting environmental issues and education, supporting Laudholm Trust’s early days, and working with others tirelessly to fend off a development project in the Massachusetts Berkshires. She and husband Tom built a solar energy efficient retirement home. At SunBridge she found her place as a welcomer, & one who encouraged others . Her lifelong causes were many.

She was an avid outdoorswoman who loved to fish and even more so, loved to teach others to fish. She enjoyed camping, hiking, and the outdoors in all seasons. When not directly participating in some sport herself, (including softball, tennis, & swimming), she cheered her favorite sports teams, school, collegiate, and pro.
