In 1960, Mrs. Fales was appointed Honorary Curator of Silver and Jewelry of the Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.

She is the author of EARLY AMERICAN SILVER first published in 1970 with 3 subsequent printings, JOS. RICHARDSON and FAMILY. Mary Lowell Curtis Jaquith
February 24, 2006
Kennebunk

Mary Lowell Curtis Jaquith passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 24, 2006 at Bradford on the Common, Kennebunk, after a brief illness. She was in her 96th year.

The only daughter of Carroll Cary Curtis and Molly Paige Lowell, Mary was born on August 12, 1910 in her parents’ home in Watertown, MA but lived much of her life in Barrington, RI and at her summer home on Peaks Island, ME. She had recently moved back to Kennebunk after living for several years at the former Eunice Frye home in Portland, where she was a strong supporter and long time trustee, and which has since been purchased by the Sisters of Mercy of the Portland Regional Community in 2003.

Mary was married in October 1955 to the late Dana W. Jaquith (Colby College, 1935) of Peaks Island and Barrington, RI and who was employed by Tucker Anthony, a Providence, RI stock brokerage firm, until his death on Peaks Island in August, 1989.

Mary considered herself to be a Portland native having lived most of her early years there and having graduated from Portland High School and nearby Gorham State Teachers College in 1934. She had been an active member of the Barrington (RI) Congregational Church, State Street Church, Portland, and for many years a member, and strong supporter of Brackett Memorial Church, Peaks Island. Her benevolence knew few bounds such as, while a resident of the Eunice Frye home, she outfitted all apartments with air conditioning units when the summers became too hot for the residents to tolerate. And, for nearly 25 years, she was the teacher to, and constant companion of, Emily Hart Payson, a mentally challenged member of that illustrious and prominent Maine family. Mary was blessed with a loving sense of humor that she often used to engage and delight her friends, family, and medical staff right to the end of her life.

Being very proud of her heritage, Mary was an active member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents in the State of Maine as well as the grandniece of the former governor of Maine and mayor of Portland, Oakley C. Curtis. She delighted in keeping in touch with far-flung family members and would revel in discovering a seemingly lost cousin, who a relative or friend might locate, and with whom she could then communicate. Her many activities included golfing in her earlier years, reading, traveling which she did extensively, and singing in church and secular choirs over the decades. She additionally thoroughly enjoyed gardening especially on her beloved Peaks Island at the summer home that she and Dana designed and built in the late 1950’s on a gorgeous point of land with unobstructed views of islands with the Atlantic beyond.

Although having never experienced the joys of motherhood, Mary leaves behind three devoted children by her brother William L.: Thomas H. L. Curtis of North Weymouth, MA, William L. Curtis of Hackettstown, NJ, and Margaret C. Hambrecht of River Edge, NJ. In addition, she leaves two first cousins, Mrs. Charles (Elizabeth Lowell) Ryland of Warsaw, VA and Mrs. Kels (Mary Lowell) Boland, of Bethesda, MD and Duxbury, MA, a sister-in-law, Marjorie Curtis of Portland as well as 9 grandnieces and grandnephews, and 14 great grandnieces and grandnephews.

No funeral arrangements have been scheduled but, in accordance with her wishes, during the summer of 2006 there will be a memorial service in her memory on Peaks Island at Brackett Memorial Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in the name of her nephew, Edward C. Hambrecht to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021.
