Doris Sherwood
June 07, 2005
Kennebunk

On June 7th, 2005, Doris Sherwood, age 104, died peacefully at Huntington Common, Kennebunk, with one of her grandchildren, Jonathan Pizey, at her side.

Doris Sherwood had been a resident of Huntington Common for a number of years.

In addition to her grandson, Jonathan, she leaves a son, William Robert Sherwood, and a daughter, the late Dora Pizey Hissong, as well as three other grandchildren, Christopher Sherwood Pizey, Anne Elizabeth Pizey, and Seth Noble Sherwood; and six great grandchildren, Max Pizey, Madeleine Pizey, Marlee Palmer, Chloe Dora Jia Jie Pizey, Ian Tobias Pizey, and Alex Miller Pizey.

Doris Sherwood, neé Siegel, grew up in Boston, where she studied acting at the Curry College of Expression and acted with the Harvard Dramatic Club, and in summer stock in New England. In 1927, when still living in Boston, she married William R. Sherwood Jr., a graduate of Harvard Law School. At this time she had already begun her apprenticeship in the antique business under Israel Sachs, one of Boston’s leading dealers in Americana, and one result of her lifetime interest in American furniture and glassware are a number of items on loan to the Portland Museum and exhibited in their glassware collection. Another result was her employment for many years as an interior decorator for W.& J. Sloane, first in Washington, D.C., and later in New York City, where she had moved after her marriage and where in later years she studied sculpture at the Art Student’s League. As early as 1928 she and her husband spent summers in Ogunquit, known to them as an artist and theater colony, and it was there (or, more precisely, York Harbor Hospital), that her first child, William R. Sherwood, was born. For many years the family spent summers in Ogunquit, often in simple shacks in Perkins Cove. In 1936 her second child, Dora, was born in New York City.

In 1950 she purchased property in Perkins Cove from Henry Card and subsequently built the large house that still stands there, and in which, after her husband’s death in 1975, she, by now long retired as an interior decorator, came to live, and where she lived until 1991, when she made the decision to move to Huntington Common. Through all her adult life she wrote and read poetry, and was an avid reader of Emerson and of the Romantic poets. Her beautiful ocean view inspired her to create many watercolors as well as poems, and she also made sculptures of her husband and her daughter. Even in her late years she was still making poems.. She was a brave and enduring spirit with a rich vocabulary and a penetrating wit, and we are all grateful that she played such a long and active part in our lives.

A memorial service for Doris Sherwood will be held at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street , Kennebunk on Saturday, July 16, at 11 o’clock.

Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.
