Herbert C. 'Rex' Decato
June 10, 2005
Wells

Herbert C. (Rex) Decato 82, of Deer Run Drive, Wells, ME died Friday June 10,2005 at the York Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Decato was born on June 17, 1922 in Billerica, MA the son of Herve J. and Alice (Sonia) Decato. He grew up on the family dairy Farm, Stoney Brook Farm in Westford, MA and attended school there.
In 1941 he entered the US Army Corps of Engineers with the rank of Staff Sargent where he served in No. Africa and Italy. After WWII he was employed by Savin in Wells where he was an engineer on the ground breaking of the Maine Turnpike. He returned to Westford, MA in 1947 and resided there until 1971, He served on Westford ‘s Finance Committee. Mr. Decato was a District Manager for Anton’s Cleaners for 39 years retiring in 1987. In 1971, He owned and operated Ocean Overlook Motor Court seasonally for six years. He moved to Exeter NH, until his retirement in 1987, he relocated to Deer Run Drive, Wells, ME .
Mr. Decato was an avid reader of Mystery novels and enjoyed his retirement years playing golf. He was most proud of his ‘Hole in One” on June 2, 1998 at the age 75. He had a great 2004 when the Red Sox, Patriot and Bush all won .

He was predeceased by a sister Dorothy McHugh and a brother Raymond Decato.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Berle ( Litchfield) Decato of Wells, ME., a son Herbert Jr. and his wife Joan Decato of Upper St. Clair, PA., two daughters Cheryl and her husband Gary Sheehan of Wells and Nancy Decato and Jeff Rosenkrans of Redondo Beach, CA and his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Autumn and Tom Poulin of Wells, and their children Jaden and Ella, Ashley Sheehan and his wife Brieta of Wells and their children Dominic and Taja, Nicole Decato of Brighton, MA and Reed Decato of Upper St. Clair, PA.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Sunday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 111 Chapel Road , Wells, ME where a funeral will be held 1 PM Monday with the Rev. Joseph Ford officiating.

Interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells, ME.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made in his name to the Wells Public Library P.O. Box 699, Wells, Maine 04090 in Mr. Decato’s memory.

John Copeland Wessels

Moody, ME

Moody, ME- John Copeland Wessels, 80 years, a resident of both Hudson, Florida and Moody, Maine, died unexpectedly at home Tuesday, August 16 in Moody, ME.

John was born in Gloversville, NY on October 19, 1924 the son of Harold and Rosina Tyrrell Wessels. John served our country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. After the war John earned his Bachelors Degree at Syracuse University and then went on to earn his Masters Degree at Indiana University.

John was the president of Gloversville Savings and Loan Association in Gloversville, New York.

His wife Norma Serviss Wessels predeceased John in 1998.

Surviving are his daughter Lisa Roderick of Wakefield, MA and Moody, ME; sons Christopher Wessels of Wells, ME, Jonathan Wessels of Parsonsfield, ME, and Jordan Wessels of Arundel, ME; sister Molly Clark of Gloversville, NY; and four grandchildren.

A memorial graveside service will be held at some future date in Prospect Hills cemetery in Gloversville, NY.

Judy Stutes
June 27, 2005
Wells

Judy Smith Stutes, 59 years, a resident of Wells, died Monday, June 27, 2005 at home surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy illness.

Judy was born on December 28, 1945 in Portland, Maine, a daughter of Colby and Gladys Clough Smith. Judy graduated from Wells High School in 1964.

Judy was a Public Safety Dispatcher for Wells Police Department from 1986 to 1995.

Most recently she worked as a truck driver for a local company.

Judy loved traveling with her loving friend and companion of 32 years, Paul Swygart.

She was a wonderful, supportive mother, and a good friend to many. Judy loved her pets, Jonathan and Alice, and took great pride in her flower garden.

Surviving are her companion, Paul E. Swygart, Sr; sons Darryn Stutes of Wells, and Paul E. Swygart, Jr. and his wife Dianne of Decatur, Indiana; daughters, Serena Allen of Remington, Virginia, and Francela Ripley and her husband, Ray of Honolulu, Hawaii; sisters, Sydnie Smith and her husband, Wayne Cutting of West Kennebunk, and Mary Braley, and her husband, David of Limington; and eight grandchildren.

Friends may call on Friday, July 1, from 5 to 8p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 54B Atlantic Place, South Portland, ME 04106, or to the Animal Welfare Society, PO Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Laura A. Lorentsen

Laura A. Lorentsen, 93 yrs, a resident of Hobe Sound, Florida died Sunday June 5, 2005 at the Atria in Kennebunk where she lived for the past three years.

She was born in Homs, Syria as Widad Iskandar, a daughter of Murad and Mariam (Merhege) Alexander.

She immigrated to the United States at age 10 to Ellis Island, New York with her family.

She graduated from Brooklyn High School in New York City and attended Pratt Institute of Art in New York City.

She met her husband where she was volunteering in the Red Cross during World War Two.

In 1956, she moved to Meriden, CT where she opened her own gift Shop “The Lorentsen House of Gifts until the1980’s when she moved to Hobe Sound, Florida where she opened the Lorentsen Gift Gallery until her retirement in the late 1980’s.

She was a member of the Hobe Sound Presbyterian Church.

She was well known for her writing abilities expressed herself through writing and poems.

She loved artwork and music. Her family and her yard were her pride and joy.

She was predeceased by her husband Kaare A. Lorentsen, 2 brother Alexander Alexander and Albert Alexander, 3 sisters Shamsi Tarabulcy, Adiba Shofi and Pearl Arida.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Wiggin and her husband James of Wells; three grandchildren Jake and Andrew Wiggin both of Wells and Priscilla Dutton and her husband Ryan of Hebron, CT; and two great grandsons Steven and Ryan Soucy.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Friday June 10th and 10 to 12 PM Saturday June 11th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.

Funeral Service will be held at 4 PM Saturday June 11th at the Ogunquit Baptist Church Shore Road Ogunquit with the Reverend David Clark officiating.

Interment will be in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Kennebunk- Lois A. Hallen, 89 years, died Saturday August 20 in her residence at Bradford on the Common lovingly surrounded with her son and daughter-in-law.

Lois was born December 10, 1915 in Hurley, WI, the daughter of Charles and Anna Croll McCauley. She earned her nursing degree at Mercy College in Detroit MI.

Her husband Leo E. Hallen predeceased Lois.

Her son Leo E. Hallen survives her.

Lucas B. Lane
June 30, 2005
Kennebunkport

Lucas Brampton Lane ,24 , a resident of Kennebunkport passed away peacefully Thursday June 30, 2005 at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Lucas had survived childhood leukemia, congestive heart failure, a stroke and a heart transplant. An aggressive form of cancer afflicted him a month ago and he succumbed to it after a courageous struggle.

Lucas was born on May 8, 1981 in Newburyport, MA the son of John B. and Deborah Beaudoin Lane and attended Georgetown schools until at age 11, He moved to Kennebunk, Maine where he graduated from Kennebunk High School with the class of 2000.

He was the co-owner with his family of the Fisherman’s Catch Restaurant in Wells and delighted customers with his radiant smile and personality.

He was predeceased by his grandparents John and Mira Lane and Francis Beaudoin.

He is survived by his parents of Kennebunk, a brother Jonathan Lane of Kennebunk, a sister Corey Lane of Hiram, ME, a maternal grandmother Domenica Beaudoin of Georgetown, MA. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Francis and Pamela Kiley of Reading, MA, George and Michelle Skane of Georgetown, MA , Barbara Lane of Australia and Kurt and Linda Behrendt of Richmond, VA and cousins Ryan, Patrick, Franci, Mikhael, Justin, Karl and Brenda.

Visiting hours will be held from 9 AM to 12 Noon Tuesday July 5, 2005 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME.

A funeral service will be held 2 PM at the South Congregational Church Temple Street Kennebunkport, ME with the Reverend Charles Whiston officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to the
Heart Transplant Program

Mary Anna Gavel

Lyman, Maine

Mary Anna Gavel, 80,of Kennebunk Pond Road, Lyman died peacefully at home early Monday morning after a prolonged illness.

Mary was a generous, kindhearted, hard workingwoman with an excellent sense of humor.

Recently she had given her life to Jesus, and was excited and ready to experience the next phase of his eternal life promise.

She was born November 1,1924 in Akron, Ohio, the fourth child of Edmund and Winifred Pralil Leonard.

As a child she attended both Catholic and private schools, obtaining a varsity letter in basketball in the 1930's. In 1943 she met the love of her life, Leonard D. Gavel.

After a two-week courtship they married, and had 44 years together before his death in 1988. Mary had an interesting variety of jobs in her life. She worked during World War Two riveting in airplane manufacturing in Ohio.

She and her husband moved to Mansfield MA, where she worked at a candy factory. The neighborhood children used to swarm her after work, knowing they could find a sweet treat in her pocket.

Mary was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who had a pioneering spirit as well. In the 1950's she owned and drove her own "Royal Enfield" motorcycle when it was a very rare sight to see a woman motorcycle pilot.

In the early 50's she moved to West Kennebunk Maine for several years, where she was employed by Kesslen Shoe. In the early1960's the family moved to Norton MA, where she helped her husband run an oil and burner business. In the 1970's they moved to Florida for three years, returning to Maine where she was employed for a short time by Morningstar, Inc. Her last place of employment was at West Point Pepperell in Biddeford ME, where she stitched blankets, retiring in 1986.

She was predeceased by her husband Leonard Donald Gavel; brothers Dick Leonard of Florida, and Ted "sweetlips" Leonard of Kent, Ohio.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law Leonard "Chip" and Victoria Gavel with whom she shared her home for 23 years; her daughter and son in law, Shirley and Chester Gabriel of Brooksville Florida. Her extra-special sister in law, Esther Wallentine of Bowdoinham ME.; former son in law Fred Weber of Seekonk MA, whom she remained close to; six grandchildren, Megan and Kelly Gavel of Lyman ME., who until now have never not had "Gramaw" at the top of the stairs; Fred Weber and his wife Kim of Johnston, RI., Mary Briggs and her husband Dave of Rehoboth MA., Leonard Weber of Saco ME., And Dina Berlo and her husband Chris of Norton MA; Eight great- grandchildren Nick and Derrick Weber, Rennee, Samantha and Donovan Briggs, Morgan and Devin Berlo, and Forrest Ravensky.

At her request there will be no visiting hours.

A memorial service will be held Friday August 12, 2005 at 1:00 PM at Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, Maine with Pastor Brian Burns of New Life Christian Fellowship church officiating.
