Mr. Faunce Pendexter

LEWISTON - Faunce Pendexter, 85, a resident of 80 Russell Street, Lewiston, died Wednesday evening, January 3, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center following a short illness.
He was born in Norway, January 7, 1915, the son of Hugh and Helen (Faunce) Pendexter. He graduated from Norway High School in 1933, and from Bowdoin College, cum laude, in 1937. He married the former Muriel Greenlaw of South Paris on June 12, 1937.
Following his graduation he wrote news copy for radio station WGAN in Portland. He joined the news staff of the Lewiston Evening Journal in 1940. He was employed by the Journal for 44 years, first as a news reporter, then 12 years as editor of the Journal Saturday magazine.
There was a two-year period when he edited the Lewiston Daily Sun agriculture page while serving at the same time as editorial writer for the Journal. Mr. Pendexter was the Journal editorial writer for 27 years. His last two years he was editorial writer for both the Lewiston Daily Sun and the Lewiston Evening Journal. He won two consecutive Associated Press Awards for editorial writing in 1981 and 1982.
Mr. Pendexter served for three years as a member of the Maine State Transportation Committee, appointed to that body by Governor John Reed. The following year he became involved with the State Transportation Study Committee. He was a member of the Lewiston Improving for Tomorrow, a member and later chairman of the Lewiston Public Library board of trustees, a director and president of the Auburn Lewiston Kiwanis Club and director and president of the Lewiston Auburn Chamber of Commerce.
Over the years Mr. Pendexter maintained an ongoing interest in the efforts of New England sports teams, most particularly Bowdoin College and the Boston Red Sox. He frequently covered local high school events as well as Bowdoin football games. He enthusiastically participated in golf and candlepin bowling and took part in both state newspaper golf and bowling tournaments. He was a life member of the Norway Country Club.
Mr. Pendexter was an inveterate reader with special interests in the history of the Civil War and the history embracing the birth and development of the United States, which he noted was not surprising, in view of his father's career as a historical novelist. As a Stanton Bird Club member, he took pleasure in bird watching and kept an annual bird list for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Muriel Pendexter of Lewiston; Mrs. Donald (Jane) Marston of Freeport; one nephew, Hugh Pendexter III of Savannah, GA; two nieces, Ruth Ackerman of Lexington, KY, and Rebekah Tolle of Underhill, VT.

Mr. Albert R. Farnum

Norway - Albert R. Farnum, 76, of 5 Dean Avenue, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at his home after a long battle with heart disease.
He was born in South Paris on August 26, 1924, the son of Richard and Alice Kenerson Farnum. Educated in local schools, he graduated from South Paris High School prior to entering the U. S. Army during World War II. He served from 1943 to 1945. He returned to South Paris, met and married the former Dorothy Edwards of Casco.
He worked for A. C. Lawrence Leather Company for 29 years. After retiring, he took a job with S.A.D. 17 as a school bus driver for ten years.
During his life, he was an Eagle Scout, loved sports, playing both baseball and football in high school, and became an accomplished snow skier and avid golfer. He loved carpentry and construction. He was a member of the VFW Post 9787. Beloved by his family he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Dorothy; his sister, Dorothy Pond of East Baldwin; three sons, Dennis and his wife Gay Ryan of Oxford; Timothy and his wife Pamela Taylor of Oxford; Eric of Lewiston; his daughter Kathleen and her husband Vincent Riley of Dawson, NE; nine grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, and one great grandchild to be born this September; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Alice Farnum; two sisters, Flora Lessard and Jeannette Levesque.
Memorial services will be held at the Gracelawn Cemetery in Auburn on Sunday, July 29, at 2 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 230 Main St., Norway.

Mrs. Theresa M. Bailey

ROCKLAND - Theresa M. Bailey, 70, died Monday, October 29, 2001, at her home here following a long illness.
Born in South Paris, November 4, 1930,, she was one of six children of Adallard and Emma Roy Morrissette.
Educated in local schools, she was a 1948 graduate from South Paris High School. She later attended Gorham State Teachers College.
She married Robert Bailey November 24, 1950 in South Paris.
The couple moved to Rockland in 1953 after residing in Winthrop and Madison.
A devoted homemaker, Mrs. Bailey enjoyed home decorating and working on her home. She enjoyed sports and pitched with a Women's Softball League until the age of 53.
Mrs. Bailey also coached Pee Wee Girl's Basketball and farm team baseball. An avid beano player, she participated in many area games.
She enjoyed grooming pets for friends and family and in more recent years, was employed in the maintenance department at the Samoset Resort.
She was a member of the Rockland Congregational Church and the Knox County Extension.
Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by one son, Thomas W. Bailey, in 1987. She is survived by her husband, Robert, of Rockland; one daughter, Sue B. Farrington, and her husband, Larry, of Rockland; one daughter-in-law, Sherry C. Bailey, of Cummings, GA; a sister, Angelina Oppromollo of New Jersey; six grandchildren, Lori Farrington, Thomas Farrington, Tanya Farrington, Wayne Bailey, Erin Bailey, Amber Bailey; four great-grandchildren, Terron, Casha, Nicholas, and Kasey.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 3, at Rockville Cemetery, Route 17, Rockport. The Reverend Dr. D. Elizabeth Mauro will officiate.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Maine Children's Cancer Program, 100 US Route One, Unit 107, Scarborough, Maine 04075.
Arrangements are under the direction of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.

Mrs. Lulie Arline Strout

MECHANIC FALLS - Lulie Arline Strout, 92, of Mechanic Falls died Monday, December 10, 2001 at d'Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.
Born in Mechanic Falls on April 12, 1909, she was the daughter of Elias M. Sr. and Lillian Herrick Strout.
She graduated from Mechanic Falls High School in 1928 and had been a homemaker all her life.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mechanic Falls and the W.S.C.S. of the church (now known as the United Methodist Women) and a past president of the group; a life member and past president of the Floyd Harlow Post No. 9787 V.F.W. Auxiliary; Mechanic Falls and Tri-town Senior Citizens; Auxiliary of American Legion Post 150 in Mechanic Falls; a member of the Empire Grove Campground Association and a former Girl Scout leader.
She is survived by four nieces, Virginia and her husband Homer Roberts of Mechanic Falls with whom she lived since 1988, Lillian and her husband James Whiting of Poland, Jean and her husband Bob Harper of Michigan and Carley Collins of Augusta; a nephew, Elwood and his wife Debbie Strout of Minot; several cousins. She was predeceased by five brothers, Elias, Jr., Vivian, Vernon, Paul and Malcolm and a sister, Hazel Strout.
Family and friends may attend funeral services at 10:30 a.m.on Friday, December 14 at Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls.
A visiting hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 prior to the funeral service on Friday morning.

Mrs. Evelyn L. Anderson

WEST PARIS - Evelyn L. Anderson, 80, died Saturday February 2, 2002.
Born in Pittsfield, Maine, on January 18, 1922, she was the daughter of Guy and Grace (Sullivan) Whitney.
In 1940 she graduated from the Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and married Keith Anderson of Newport. The couple lived in Newport from 1940-1977. Mrs. Anderson worked as a bookkeeper for her husband's auto body shop in Newport from 1948 until his death in 1974.
In 1974 she was the founder and dress maker of the Wee Women's Wear, children's handmade clothing, which she operated from 1974 until 1986.
She was a past Worthy Matron of Nokomis Chapter O.E.S. and was a devoted grandmother, golfer, ardent bridge player and handcrafter.
She leaves one sister, Barbara Luciano of Newark, New York; one daughter, Sylvia McCann, and husband Richard of West Paris; one grandson, Steven McCann, and his companion Lisa Dustin of West Paris; two granddaughters, Amy L. Spain and her husband, Andrew, of Concord, New Hampshire; and Laura McCann, of Windham; one great-grandson, Mark A. Spain, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Anderson was predeceased by her husband in 1974 and one brother, Clarence Whitney of Fulton, New York.
Private services were held for the family at Andrews Funeral Home in Bryant Pond on Monday. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Newport, Maine. Donations may be made in her memory to the Tri Town Ambulance or to the Ledgeview Nursing Center.
We'll miss you Gram.

Mr. Donald Charles Richardson Sr.

OXFORD AND SUMNER - Donald Charles Richardson Sr., husband of 49 years of Irene (Allen) Richardson, died at his home after a long illness with his loving family at his side.
Born in Portland on February 12, 1918, he was the son of Walter and Alice (Houghton) Richardson. Mr. Richardson had worked over the years for Milliken Thomlinson, Goodwin's Dairy, A. C. Lawrence, Bragg's Automotive and most recently at Bessey Motors. He was a family man and enjoyed his family very much.
He was a former member of the West Sumner Bible Church and was very active in helping build the church as well as a Deacon of the church from 1966-1995. He was presently a member of the South Paris Baptist Church and had been active in the remodeling of the church.
He was married to Louise (Varney) Richardson and they had four children: Marilyn and her husband, Ray Hammond, of South Paris, Betty and her husband, Robert Walder, of Sumner, Donald Richardson Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Sumner and Jim Richardson and his wife, Cindy, of South Paris.
On June 21, 1952 he married Irene (Allen) Richardson and they had four children: Patricia Bailey and her husband, Dennis, of Sumner, Steve Richardson and his wife, Miriam, of Sunnyside, Washington, Chris Knights and her husband, Jim, of Sumner and Darlene Smith and her husband, Robert, of South Paris. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Phyllis Richardson, of Turner; 22 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting were held at the Andrews Funeral Home on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the South Paris Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Waugh and Pastor Stuart Hilton officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in the Pleasant Pond Cemetery in West Sumner.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish, memorials in his memory may be made to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, 127 Pottle Road, Oxford, Maine 04270.

Mrs. Elaine H. Harriman

GORHAM - Elaine H. Harriman, 68, of Oakwood Drive, died July 29, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Portland after a long illness.
Born in Burlington, VT, she was the daughter of Gordon O. and Ruth G. Adams Anderson. She attended Fryeburg Academy and Westbrook Junior College, graduating in 1954.
In 1958, she married David Harriman; the couple enjoyed 43 years of marriage.
Mrs. Harriman was a homemaker all of her married life. She was active in Girl Scouts and numerous children's activities when her daughters were growing up. She also remained active over the years in the Westbrook College Alumni Association.
After her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling and time spent together. Her husband predeceased her on October 21, 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia H. Harbage, of Norway and Cathryn H. Harriman, of MA; one grandson, Kyle Ingram, of Norway and one granddaughter, Cameron Ingram, also of Norway.
There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 2, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.

Mrs. Marigold E. 'Goldie' Mason

WOODSTOCK - Marigold E. "Goldie" Mason, 67, of West Paris, died unexpectedly in Woodstock Sunday evening, September 29, 2002.
She was born in Woodstock on September 6, 1935, the daughter of Bernal and Hope Appleby Thurlow. She was educated at the Forestdale Seventh Day Adventist Church School in Woodstock, Browning Memorial Elementary School and South Lancaster Academy in South Lancaster, MA where she met lifelong mate, James Lowell Mason, Sr. They were married on September 6, 1952. Their children and grandchildren had a 50-year open house on Sunday September 22, at the Hope M. Thurlow Memorial Hall to celebrate the occasion.
For those 50 years, they made their home on Curtis Hill in West Paris, while raising three children and seven grandchildren. During this time, "Goldie" received degrees in Dental Hygiene and Practical Nursing. Because of her great desire to help others, she always made herself available whether she was well or not to aid anyone in need. For years, she headed up the community services for the South Woodstock Seventh Day Adventist Church, while serving on the church and church school board. She enjoyed doing many projects that involved all of the children at Forestdale School, right up until her untimely death.
She also served as camp nurse for Lawroweld's Blind Camp, Junior Camp and at the annual Northern New England SDA meeting in Freeport.
On the homestead, "Ma" was always around to support her husband, three children and their spouses along with all of the grandchildren. "Goldie" always enjoyed entertaining with potluck suppers and lawn parties at home with her extended family. "Mom", "Ma", and "Goldie" will be greatly missed by a multitude of family, friends and church members.
Mrs. Mason is survived by her husband of just over 50 years; three children, Jim Jr. and his wife, Pam, Jeanne Grover and her husband Roni, Sr. and Jerold and his wife Tracie all of Curtis Hill; seven grandchildren, Roni Grover and his wife Naomi, Lyndon Mason, Rachel Grover, James Mason III, Bryce Mason, Becca Mason , Requel Grover and very soon to be born, Tia Mason; three sisters, Dorothy Davis of Ootawah, TN, Virginia Mason of Woodstock and Beryl Hall and her husband, Wendall of Bryant Pond; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a daughter, on March 10, 1954; three grandchildren, Brittan, Talia and Tiana Mason; and two brothers, Bernal Thurlow and Carroll Thurlow.
Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, Andrews Road, So. Woodstock. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the So. Woodstock Seventh Day Adventist Church. Burial will follow at Wayside Cemetery, West Paris. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Marigold Mason Memorial Fund, c/o Leanne Wisnosky, Forestdale School, South Woodstock, ME 04219.
