Helen E. Weigel

Helen E. (Grubb) Weigel, 85, of Flintlock Village, Wells, formerly of Leominster, MA, died at the Kennebunk Nursing Home on March 2, 2006 lovingly surrounded by her family.

Helen was born in Fitchburg, MA on May 14, 1920, the daughter of C. Leroy and Elizabeth (Shields) Grubb. She was a resident of Leominster, MA before moving to Wells, ME. She graduated from Fitchburg High and the Newton Wellesley School of Nursing. She also studied at Fitchburg State, Boston College, and Clark University. She was employed at Leominster Hospital where she was the operating supervisor for more than twenty years.

Helen was active in St. David’s Episcopal Church and on the board of the Wells Public Library. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her book club. She also enjoyed writing and took numerous creative writing courses.

Douglas Weigel, her husband of more than 50 years, predeceased her in 1993.

Helen leaves a daughter, Donna E. Weigel of Wells; a son Steven D. Weigel and his wife Loretta W. of Moody; grandson Jarret S. Weigel of Wells; granddaughter Stephanie E. Duell and her husband Lawrence of Moody; and a nephew Carl L. Grubb and his wife Roma of Moody.

Graveside services will be held at Evergreen cemetery in Leominster, MA at a later date.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent in Helen’s memory to the Wells Public Library, P.O. Box 699, Wells, ME 04090 or to the organization of your choice.

Honora E. 'Nora' Slocum

Falmouth

Honora E. (Nora) Slocum, age 92, a former resident of Depot Road, died Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the Freeport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Northbridge, Mass on September 23, 1912, a daughter of Edouard and Marie Levesque Roy and attended Northbridge schools.

Nora lived in Pawtucket, RI and East Freetown, Mass prior to moving to Maine in 1976.

She and her husband, Forrest Slocum, owned and operated the Nan-Pat Novelty Company in East Providence, RI and was a member of several bowling leagues in Mass.

Nora is predeceased by her husband who died in 1995; four brothers, Armand Roy, Matthew Ovila Roy, Gerald Roy and Roland Roy; and a sister, Rita Roy Mancini.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J. Henry (Nancy M.) Lalumiere of Westbrook, and Mrs. Deane (Patricia A.) Roberts of Wilsons Mills, ME; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7p.m. Monday, July 25, at Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland, where a funeral service will be held at
10a.m. Tuesday with Msgr. Charles Murphy officiating.

Burial will follow at the Farris cemetery in Cumberland.

Horace E. Balkam

Horace E. “Hockey” Balkam, age 81 of Bayview Terrace, Wells, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at York Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Revere, Mass. on June 6, 1924, a son of Horace V. and Ruth M. Mattheson Balkam.

“Hockey” graduated from Millis High School in 1942, and Mass. Maritime Academy in 1943. He served as a Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1947.

From 1957 to 1981, Mr. Balkam worked as Chief Engineer at Cushing Hospital. He later held other engineering positions.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Wells and enjoyed fishing and boating.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anne (Cassidy) Balkam of Wells; four sons, Mark E. of Venice, FL, Stephen J. of E. Sandwich, Mass, James D. of Laury Stattion, PA, and Edward T. of Methuen, Mass; three daughters, Cynthia A. Thornton of Reading, Mass, Ann Kenline of South Yarmouth, Mass, and Kathleen FitzGibbons of Hopkinton, Mass; 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Eldridge Road, Wells.

Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery.

At the family’s request, please omit flowers.

Donations are requested in his memory to York Hospital Friend Raising, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Isabelle 'Nana' Plante

Isabelle Marie “Nana” Plante, 92 of Kennebunk, died peacefully on May 4, 2005 at the South Portland Nursing Home.

She was born on January 30, 1913 in St. Helen, Quebec, a daughter of Fred and Aurora Desilets. She had 3 brothers, George, Jerry, and Paul and 4 sisters, Theresa, Georgette, Estelle, and Cecile. The family moved to the United States in 1922, while still a young girl, they settled in the Sanford area.

In 1931, Isabelle married Joseph Plante, also of Sanford. They lived in Kennebunk where Joe owned and operated his barber shop. In 1947, they bought and managed a guest house at Kennebunk Beach as beloved partners until Joe’s death in 1964.

Isabelle was a member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Kennebunk.

Isabelle was an accomplished cook, seamstress, knitter, and most especially a very talented rug braider. Isabelle taught the art of rug braiding into her late eighties. Sharing her knowledge of this craft brought her great joy and satisfaction. Isabelle’s favorite dessert “Strawberry Delight: will be sorely missed at the family gatherings.

Isabelle is survived by her three children, Estelle Unni of North Reading, MA, Lorraine McDonough of South Portland, Me and Ronald Plante of Avon Park, FL. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Marty, Kathy, Johnny, Kevin, Tom, Joey, Michael, Joseph and Paul. In addition, Isabelle is survived by 10 great grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Martha’s Church in Kennebunk on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at 10 AM.

It would be appreciated that in lieu of flowers, any donations be given to VNA – Hospice, 40 Foden Road, South Portland, ME 04106.

Isabelle Mae Sharkey

Isabelle Mae Sharkey, 88, formerly of Somersworth, NH, Ocean Avenue, Wells, and Melbourne Beach, FL, died Monday morning in Pownal following a brave battle with cancer.

She was born in Jefferson, NH on December 28, 1916, a daughter of Stephen and Belle Walker Sheridan.

She graduated from Lancaster High School with the Class of 1933.

On June 14, 1941, she married Doctor Paul Sharkey.

They set up household in NH, and summered in Wells.

In addition to being a homemaker, for many years Isabelle worked as a Pharmacy Assistant.

She was a member of the Wells Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship, and the Leisure Living Association in Florida. She was also an active member of St. Mark’s Church in Indialantic, FL.

She enjoyed painting, arts and crafts, knitting, and reading. In earlier years, she was a Girl Scout Leader.

In addition to her husband, she was pre-deceased by two brothers: Stephen and Robert Sheridan, and three sisters: Nellie Ingerson, Bertha Hatsfield, and Phyllis Smith.

Survivors include:
1 daughter: Bonnie L. Reidman of Pownal
1 sister: Kay Noyes of Jefferson, NH
2 granddaughters: Karyn and Patricia Reidman, both of Portland

Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Wells Congregational Church, 1695 Post Road, Wells, with the Rev. Herb Henry officiating.

Burial will follow at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to: Chans Home Health Care (Hospice), 50 Baribeau Drive, Brunswick, ME. 04011. Arrangements by Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells.

James A. Yorston

James Arthur Yorston, 65, known to family and friends fondly as Jim, died July 11, 2005 after a brief but acute illness.

He is remembered by his large extended family and huge circle of acquaintances as a kind man who loved animals, children, and trips with his lovely Swiss wife of 46 years, Rachel Jaccottet Yorston.

For many years, Jim and Rachel resided in Smithfield, RI, but four years ago, they moved to Maine to be near their children: son William Yorstan and his wife Susan, and grandchildren Candace and Christopher of York, Maine; and daughter Catherine Lawrence and her husband Steven, and grandchildren James and Meghan of Wells, Maine.

Jim was the son of Ethel M. Paquette of Narragansett, RI and the late James E. Yorston, and step-son of the late J. Raymond Paquette. He proudly served in the Air Force in post-WWII Europe.

In addition to his mother, Jim is survived by three sisters: Patricia A. Charron of Cranston, RI; Barbara Y. Mecurio of Greenville, RI; Ann Bouchard of Bristol, RI; two brothers: Raymond Paquette of Phoenix, AZ; and Michael Yorston of Achusnit, MA.

There are no visiting hours.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church, York Street, York, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Laudholm Trust, PO Box 1007, Wells, ME. 04090.

Jean Edward Dube

Jean Edward Dube, 66 yrs, a resident of Sullivan Street Berwick died Tuesday July 19, 2005 at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in South Berwick, Me on December 25, 1938 a son of Marguerite Valliere Dube. He graduated from Berwick High School.

He was employed by the Encore Shoe Company of Rochester, NH as shoe cutter for 20 years and also employed by the Berwick Sewer District as mechanic for 18 years until his retirement in 2004.

He was avid in outdoorsman in fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed spending time at his camp on Great Estes Lake in Acton, ME.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years Priscilla (Poirier) Dube of Berwick, ME, his mother of Berwick, ME, a son Edward D. Dube and his wife Tammy of Waterboro, ME, two daughters Karen D. Prior and her husband Matthew of North Hampton, NH and Patti D Mowatt and her husband Donald Jr. of Biddeford, ME two brothers Roger Dube of Berwick and Richard Dube of San Antonio, Texas, mother in law Doris Poirer of Somersworth, NH and 7 grand children and 2 step grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 7 to 9 PM Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home 301 Main Street, South Berwick, Maine.

Memorial Service will be private.

Interment in MT. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth, NH.

Family Flowers only.

Memorial donations may be made to the Wentworth Homecare and Hospice 113 New Rochester Road Suite #4, Dover, NH 03820 in Mr. Dube’s memory.
