Winnifred Estella Staz

Kennebunk- Winnifred Staz, 90 years, passed away Thursday July 21, 2005 at the Renaissance in Biddeford under the watchful and loving care of her daughter Sharon.

Winnifred was born November 21, 1914 in Wadsworth, Ohio the daughter of Fred and Mary Paul Watrous. After graduating from high school, she attended nursing training for three years to become a registered nurse.

Winnifred loved children and especially enjoyed her three years as a “senior” reader to elementary school children when she was in Massachusetts.

Her daughter Sharon Staz; sons Fred and Richard Staz; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive Winnifred.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Kent, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Winnifred’s memory to the children’s section of the public library of your choice – either Kennebunk or in your hometown.

Andrina M. Goodwin

Andrina M. Goodwin, 57, of New Gloucester, died on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at the Hospice House of Androscoggin surrounded by her loving family, following a courageous battle with Bone Cancer.

She was born in Somerville, MA on July 1, 1948, the eldest daughter of Gaetano and Elizabeth F. (Bottiglio) Ferranti. She attended Burlington High School and married Donald Goodwin on May 6, 1972. The couple moved to Kennebunk, Maine, and then raised three children in Arundel for over twenty years.

Andrina was active with volunteer work throughout her life. In the earlier years, she held various positions at her children’s school and wrote the weekly “News of Arundel” column for the York County Coast Star.

After being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 1989, Andrina organized and coordinated the first Breast Cancer Support Group as well as the first American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in York County. She continued to bring awareness and support through fundraising and events. One such event was a Fashion Show Luncheon that had Breast Cancer survivors as models. Andrina also served as a board member at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford for many years.

Her life centered much around her family and she enjoyed spending time at the beach and writing. She faced her illness with dignity and bravery and never complained about the pain. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and hero.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 33 years, Donald; two sons, Kenneth Goodwin and his fiancé Eileen Robledo of Encino, CA; Keith Goodwin of Windham; one daughter, Kelly Domas and her husband Ed of New Gloucester; two grandchildren, Jacob Domas and Logan Goodwin; mother, Elizabeth Ferranti; brother, Guy Ferranti and his wife Lynn of Peabody, MA; sister, Judy Follett and her husband Bill of Mesa, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martha’s Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

Antigone "Tiggie" Ganellas

Ogunquit- Antigone J. “Tiggie” Ganellas, 89 years, of Ogunquit, died December 26, peacefully at Pine Point Nursing in Scarborough.

Tiggie was born September 29, 1916 in Lowell, MA a daughter of Jerasimos and Thomai Demetrakoulakou Mekelatos. She graduated from the Lowell High School where she was the captain of the ROTC program. Tiggie also attended Greek School, where she spoke fluent Greek.

Tiggie was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth, NH. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for many years. She enjoyed music and played the organ and piano. She loved her family and enjoyed traveling with her husband in the off-season.

Tiggie was probably best known for her restaurant in Ogunquit, Valerie’s. She and her husband Constantine (The Captain) opened Valerie’s Restaurant in 1947. She loved running the business and always looked forward to reopening in the spring when the first of “My People” would start to arrive. Mrs. G., as her staff affectionately called her, touched many of her employees’ lives. Her restaurant antics will remain forever as Ogunquit Folklore. Her former clientele will always remember her greeting them at the door with a “Hello Doll”. To Tiggie, her restaurant was her living room, and every night she welcomed her customers into her home.

Tiggie was predeceased by her husband, Constantine, in 1986; brothers Aristedis (Ted) and Constantine (Charlie); and sisters Sphigenia (Virginia), Andronike (Niki), and Anastasia (Sula).

Tiggie is survived by her daughter Valerie and her husband Ray Saulnier; sister Evelmine (Evelyn) Scozzafava; grandchildren John A. Saulnier and Marc R. Saulnier; great grandchildren Nicholas and Christian; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday December 29, 2005 at 2pm at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.

Barrett Whitney Stevens

Barrett Whitney Stevens , a resident of Huntington Commons, Kennebunk died Monday, April 10, 2006 at his home after living a full life for almost 99 years.
Barrett was born in Lexington, MA on May 21, 1906 a son of Ralph Leslie and Marie (Clarke) Stevens. He attended Ridgefield school and graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.
He served in the United States Army Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel in WWII.
He was employed by the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company in New York City for 30 years retiring in 1972.
He was member of the Fly Club and Hasting Pudding at Harvard University, the Harvard Alumni Club the River Club of Kennebunkport, ex member of the Squadron A and longtime member of the choir at the St. David’s Episcopal Church of Kennebunk.
Barrett enjoyed painting watercolors, piano, playing tennis and reading.
He was predeceased by his wife Mary Louise (Herrick) Steven who died in 1996 his sister Ruth Freeman and his brother Alexander Stevens.
He is survived by his two sons, Alexander Whitney Stevens of Westport, CT and David Herrick Stevens of Oakton, VA; a daughter, Leslie Clarke Stevens of Ahwahnee, CA; and six grandchildren, Benjamin and Harry Stevens, Sara, Alison, Taylor, and Margaret “Maggie” Stevens.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Beverly Anne Kirn

Kennebunk – Beverly Anne Kirn, age 63, of Greenwich Way, Kennebunk, and Bonita Springs, FL, died Thursday morning, April 6, 2006 at Southern Maine Medical Center surrounded by her loving family after a battle with lung cancer.
Beverly was born in Worcester, Mass. on January 11, 1943, the daughter of Michael Thomas and Josephine Anne (Days) DiTerlizzi.
She graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1960, attended Worcester Junior College and graduated from Carnegie Institute of Medical Technology.
She worked as an Administrative Assistant at Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston from 1961 to 1966.
She married E. Bruce Kirn, O.D. on August 7, 1965. They moved to Rumford, Maine in 1966, where she helped him open his optometric practice. Besides being a homemaker, she was owner of the Rumford Drive-In Theater from 1968 to 1984. She worked tirelessly in many Rumford civic and charitable organizations. Most notably, she was a member of the Rumford Hospital Auxiliary for 17 years, where she served as its president and chairman of the Rumford Hospital Fair. She was recognized in 1996 for serving as founding trustee of Rumford Community Home, and as a community director on the hospital’s parent corporation, Rumford Consolidated Healthservices, Corporation.
She was a member of the Rumford Book Club, the Searchlight Club, and was a proud founding member of the Rumford “Blabbies Bridge Club”.
In 1997 she and her husband moved to Bonita Springs, FL. She was a member of the Bonita Bay Golf Club. She worked as a sales associate at the Mole Hole in Naples, FL, retiring in May of 2005.
She and her husband celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this August.
She will be remembered for her warmth, compassion, and witty sense of humor. Her interests were varied from reading, gardening, decorating, cooking and entertaining to beach-combing, but most memorable will be her love and devotion to her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband of Kennebunk and Bonita Springs, FL; her son, Dr. W. Todd Kirn and his wife Jennifer of Kennebunk; her daughter, Heidi Kirn McMahon and her husband Neil of Teaneck, N.J.; her mother of Shrewsbury, Mass; four grandchildren, Lily Kirn McMahon, Charles Kirn McMahon, Virginia Reese Kirn, and Gavin William Kirn; a sister-in-law, Katharine Kirn Russell, and a brother-in-law, Paul Russell of Wellesley, Mass; and a niece, Lindsay Russell Moseley and her husband James of Arlington, Mass.
Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, 2006, and 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2006 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Private burial will be at Mountain View cemetery in Claremont, N.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Hospice of Southern Maine, 901 Washington Avenue, Suite 104, Portland, ME 04103; or Rumford Community Hospital, 420 Franklin Street, Rumford, ME 04276.

Bradley Arthur Brooks

Bradley Arthur Brooks, age 55 of Pine Hill Road, died Sunday, December 4, 2005 as a result of injuries from an automobile accident on Route #202 in Waterboro. His wife, Janet E. (Ross) Brooks also died in the accident.

He was born in Rochester, NH on February 13, 1950, a son of Evan E. and Eleanor F. Martin Brooks.

He attended Berwick schools and graduated from Berwick High School in 1968. He then attended and graduated from the Portsmouth Vocational School as a machinist.

He worked at Prime Tanning in Berwick for 23 years and had most recently worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for several years.

Bradley was a member of the Retreads motorcycle Group and enjoyed watching soccer. He had coached for the Berwick Youth Soccer Program where he also served on its committee, and was a member of the Pathfinders Snowmobile Club.

In his youth, he was active in the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts.

He is predeceased by his father, and a brother, Ashley Brooks.

He is survived by his son, Adam Brooks and his girlfriend Joey Goodrow of Fairhope, Alabama; his mother of Berwick; a brother, Chesley E. Brooks and his wife, Rachel of Berwick; his sister, Mrs. Vernalee Weeks and her husband, Richard of Berwick; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6-8pm Friday, December 9, at the Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick.

A graveside Service will be held at 11am Saturday at the Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

At the request of the family, please omit flowers.

Contributions can be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.

Catherine O. Mullen

Catherine O. Mullen, 77, of Cheshire Meadows, died Wednesday evening at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. She was born in Bathgate, Scotland, UK on July 23, 1928, a daughter of Patrick and Catherine (O’Brien) Cullen.

In September of 1948, she married Patrick Mullen. At the age of 35 she and her husband immigrated to the United States and became citizens, but her heart belonged to Scotland. They settled in Salem, MA where Catherine was a long time waitress at the Hawthorne Hotel. Upon retirement, she and Patrick moved to Kennebunk.

Catherine was a communicant of St. Martha’s parish. She was an avid reader and British history buff, and enjoyed current events.

In addition to her husband, Patrick, in 1999, she was pre-deceased by 2 brothers: Michael Cullen of Scotland, and Hugh Cullen of Australia; and 2 sisters: Mary Cannon and Margaret Foley.

Survivors include:
her son: Paul B. Mullen of Melrose, MA
her daughter: Carol A. Foyles of Chester Springs, PA
a brother: Mathew Cullen of Scotland
her nephews: Joseph and Paul Foley of Massachusetts
her niece: Kathleen Blacklock of South Africa

Visiting hours will be Sunday, December 18, from 3 to 5 p.m. only at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 19, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martha’s Church, Route 1, Kennebunk.

Burial will follow in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to: The Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Centre Street, Newton, MA 02458.

Chester J. Dunham

Commander Chester J. Dunham, Jr. U.S. Navy, ret. Decorated Veteran and well known Civic Volunteer of Sylvan Circle, Kennebunk, husband of Eleanor E. Meserve Dunham, died Thursday, December 8, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.

Commander Dunham was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, September 20, 1926, a son of Chester J. and Lena M. Wilson Dunham, Sr. He attended schools in Memphis, TN; Afton, OK and Tulsa, OK. A Graduate of Tulsa Central High School, The George Washington University School of Business and Public Management with a BA. Degree, The Naval School of Hospital Administration, Bethesda, MD., The Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. and many Navy technical and specialty schools.

He entered the Navy in November of 1942 as an apprentice Seaman, served with the 4th Marine Division as a Medical Corpsman (Pharmacist’s Mate second Class) , with a Marine Infantry Company and a Battalion Headquarters, of the 4th Marine Division during the capture of the Marshall Islands (Kwajalein Atoll), the Marianas Islands (Saipan and Tinain), and Iwo Jima. He was twice wounded and evacuated for treatment during these campaigns. He served for several years in submarines, progressing to the rate of Chief Petty Officer. He served on the Rhine River Patrol during the occupation of Germany after World War II. He was commissioned as an ensign, Medical Service Corps while attending Nuclear Submarine School and was a graduate of Officers Candidate School, Newport, RI. He served in administrative positions at Naval Treatment Facilities in Newport, RI, Annapolis, MD, and on the Hospital Ship USS REPOSE in Vietnam. He served as the Administrative Officer of the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, NH and the Naval Hospital, Navy Regional Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. He was decorated and received commendations for valor and performance of his duties many times during his long and distinguished career.

Cmdr. Dunham retired from the Navy in January 1973. He then served as the Administrator of the H.D. Goodall Hospital, Sanford, ME from 1973 to 1975. He served as Director of Hospital Licensing, Department of Human Services, State of Maine for several years, and was honored with an Award from the Maine Hospital Association for his service to Maine Hospitals, while so serving.

Commander Dunham was a past affiliate of the American Hospital Association, several state Hospital associations, and the American College of Health Care Executives.

He was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the DAV, the Fourth Marine Division Association, and the Pine Tree Chapter of the Fourth Marine Division Association, of which he was a past President. He was also a life member of the Florida Chapter of the Fourth Marine Division Association.

He was a long time Mason, a member of Arundel Lodge of Kennebunkport, ME all Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portland, ME 32nd degree, Kora Shrine of Lewiston, ME. Put Stevens Court #107, Royal Order of Jester’s, the York County Shrine Club, the Moped Unit, and several other Shrine Clubs. He was a past member of the Red Fork Lodge of Masons, Tulsa, OK and a Past Master of York Lodge #22 of Kennebunk, ME. He served on the Board of Kennebunk Health Services, Inc. (Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services) and served as President for two terms. He was recognized by the Governor of the State of Maine for his volunteer services. He served as a SAD 71 School Board member, and served as the Clerk of the Kennebunk Historical Fire Society for the past several years, and also served as a member of the Board of the Evergreen cemetery Corporation. He was a member of the Arundel Yacht Club of Kennebunkport, ME and the Kora Shrine Yacht Club, the Kennebunkport Historical Society and the Brick Store Museum.

He enjoyed many outdoor activities, fishing, gardening, and especially visiting his family and many friends.

He is predeceased by a daughter Nicole who died in 1999.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Eleanor (Ellie) Meserve Dunham; one son, Jeff of Leesburg, VA; a daughter, Kimberly Planchon and husband John of Warner Robins, GA. Two sisters also survive, Marilyn Dunham of Denton, TX and Gloria Hauger of Tulsa, OK.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk, ME from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Tuesday, Dec 13. Masonic Service by Arundel Lodge #76 will be held at 7:00 PM at the Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2PM on Wed. Dec 14 at the Chapel with the Reverend Daniel Riggall of St. David’s Episcopal Church officiating. Military Honors will follow. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Shiners Hospitals for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104; the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43 Holland Road, West Kennebunk, ME 04094; or to the Kennebunk Free Library, 112 Main St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Cmdr. Dunham’s memory.
