James H. Stalnaker
December 26, 2005
Kennebunk

James Howard Stalnaker, 58, of Kennebunk, Maine passed away peacefully at his home on December 26, 2005. He was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Edwin Harley Stalnaker and Alma “Arlene” (Baston) Stalnaker. Jim was educated in Tulsa, Enid and Midwest City, Oklahoma schools, graduating from Midwest City High School in 1966. While serving in the Army from 1966-1972, during the Vietnamese conflict, he was awarded three Purple Hearts, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Army Commendation Medal. He worked as a photographer for “Stars and Stripes” while in the service and enjoyed it so much, he decided to pursue journalism as his profession.
He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 with a BA in Motion Picture Journalism and began his career at the United States Postal Service Center in Norman, Oklahoma, later working as a night and weekend cameraman at both Channels 5 and 9 in Oklahoma City. He later accepted a position at WCPO Channel 9 in Cincinnati OH as a television news photographer.
He fell in love with the New England area and was very happy when he moved his young family to Portland, Maine in 1983 and began his career at WGME-TV, Channel 13. He first worked as a news photographer and in his later years as master editor and general “go to guy” for the Daybreak program. Jim’s quiet, deadpan, yet cutting wit endeared him to many co-workers and friends.
Jim loved Maine’s changing seasons, especially winter (his December 8th birthdate may have had something to do with that!). Alpine and Nordic skiing were his favorite pastimes at his place at Mt. Abram. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, hiking and canoeing. He was an accomplished still photographer and enjoyed taking pictures when he traveled. He enjoyed attending Portland Sea Dogs baseball games. He loved all sorts of music and particularly enjoyed the cutting edge CDs his oldest nephew Jason Lacker sent him at Christmas.
His life changed dramatically after a hereditary condition, aggravated by a fall, caused a spinal cord injury, placing him on long-term disability. But even with mobility issues, he enjoyed life, especially seeing friends, attending movies, a Sea Dogs game and watching NFL football (go Pats!).
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Barbara Baker Stalnaker, and son Dylan James Stalnaker of Kennebunk; sister Mary and brother-in-law Keith Boyd of Midwest City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Elaine Baker Lacker of Ft. Worth, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mark and Margo Baker of Kennebunk; nieces and nephews Jason and Rachel Lacker, Jennifer and Dan Mele, Jacqueline Lacker, Ashley Baker, Andrew Baker and great-niece Madeline Lacker. Numerous cousins also survive him.
Visiting hours are Thursday, December 29th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 9:00 a.m. at Old Orchard Beach United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Washington and Fountain Avenues, Old Orchard Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Travis Roy Foundation, 111 Huntington Avenue, Prudential Center, 19th Floor, Boston, MA 02199-7613; or The James Stalnaker Journalism Scholarship Fund, c/o Saco Valley Credit Union, 312 Main Street, Saco, ME. 04072. This scholarship will be used for Maine and Oklahoma students pursuing a degree in journalism.
Jim’s family would like to express their appreciation to the nursing and C.N.A. staff of Interim Healthcare. Also, the special love, care and concern of his personal caregivers, Pam Rowan and Normand St. Michel enabled him to have a wonderful quality of life and to remain in his own home.
Arrangements under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

John J. Ballentine

Somerworth, NH

John J. Ballentine of 9 Lakeview Drive, died at the Wentworth Douglas Hospital in Dover on April 27th, 2006.

He had been in poor health recently but remained active from his Lily Pond residence.

He was a retired book publisher and former local newspaper owner.

John was born April 2, 1927 in Didsbury (Manchester), England, the son of Joseph B. and Winifred (Knight) Ballentine. He was an American Citizen at birth and came to this country when of grade school age. His family settled in Wolfeboro where he graduated from Brewster Academy and went on to receive an AB from Syracuse University in Journalism and Political Science and an MA from the University of Minnesota.

As a student at Syracuse, Ballentine was active in the local and national movement of the National Independent students Association (NISA), an organization of 3000 college students. When a senior at Syracuse he was elected NISA’s national president.

His first job after college was as executive director of a building and development fund for Brewster Academy; its goal was the construction of a badly needed gymnasium.

He was next employed for two years in Laconia by the Laconia Evening Citizen and from 1954-1955 was elected to the State Legislature from Laconia ‘s Ward 4. The Citizen’s publisher at the time, Edward Gallagher, encouraged him to remain on the newspaper staff and write editorials and regular column based on his Concord Legislative experiences as vice Chairman of the House education Committee.

In 1956 John purchased the combined printing plant and weekly newspaper, the Somersworth Free Press, which had been owned by Ann and Theodore Coolidge, parents of attorney Clyde R. Coolidge. In 1964 he was elected for a two-year term as the founding president of the New England Weekly Press Association, the forerunner of today’s New England Press Association.

He was active in a broad range of community project in this city. These included founder and co-chairman with the late Kenneth Blaisdell of the First Conservation Commission, which was responsible for one of this city’s early, tree planting efforts. He was an organizer and president of the Summersworth Historical Society in the 1970’s and 1980’s. His interests were broad and included collecting antiquarian books, of which a collection of the 19th century South Berwick author, Sarah Orne Jewett, was especially fine.

Ballentine sold the weekly Free Press in 1966 and then founded a Somersworth book publishing company with a dual imprint- New Hampshire Publishing Co. and New England History Press. The former created a series of outdoor guide books. The latter reprinted 19th century New England town histories and genealogies.

In recent years, John authored the “Free Press Chronicles” for the Somersworld.com web site recounting and offering commentary on stories which once made headlines in the Somersworth Free Press.

John was a communicant of the First Parish united Church of Christ in Somersworth.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary Anna “Pat” (Morse) Ballentine in 1994.

John was survived by his sister Mary Ballentine of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, a sister in law Margaret Kimball Morse of Atkinson, New Hampshire, and a brother in law, Charles F. J. Morse of Manchester, Connecticut and by several cousins in Wolfeboro and in England and many good friends.
