Mrs. Eloise Kloss Glass

SUMNER/FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Eloise Kloss Glass, 88, a resident of Fredericksburg, VA and Sumner, died on Sunday, January 26 at Mary Washington Hospital after a brief illness.
Born May 13, 1914 in Allensville, KY she lived throughout Kentucky as a youth, graduating from Atherton High School in Louisville, KY. She attended and graduated from Blue Mountain College, MS and did graduate studies at the University of Mexico, Mexico City. During her college years she taught in rural Mississippi schools while still an undergraduate.
During the pre-war and war years she taught in the Glasgow, KY public schools, and later was a public health worker in Louisville, KY, where she met her husband, Joseph, and married.
Following the war the family moved to Detroit, MI and later to Pittsburgh, PA and Boston, MA. During these years she taught French and Spanish in the Mt. Lebanon, PA and Hingham, MA school systems and at Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA, and was an editor at a publishing company in Abington, MA.
Mr. and Mrs. Glass moved to Birmingham, AL and lived there until Joseph's death. Mrs. Glass has been a resident of Williamsburg, VA and Fredericksburg, VA in the years since then. She resided at her summer home in Sumner for many years from 1960-1990. She was a member of Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church and former member of churches at each home, serving as a deacon at South Shore Baptist Church in Hingham, MA. She was an avid quilter, fisherman, gardener and artist.
Mrs. Glass dedicated her life to her family and is survived by her daughter, Pamela Glass Stroud of Greer, SC; her son, Joseph W. Glass of Fredericksburg, VA and three grandchildren, Laura Stroud at the College of Charleston, Joshua Glass at Lehigh University and Amy Stroud, accepted at Clemson University.
A memorial service will be held at Spotsylvania Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 30. A brief fellowship with the family will follow the service. Mrs. Glass will be interred at the family plot in Rutherford College, NC in a private family service. Any memorials should be sent to Brevard College, Director of Development, 400 N. Broad St.,
Brevard, NC 28712 and specified for the Joseph E. and Eloise K. Glass scholarship fund, or in the name of Mrs. Glass to the benevolence of your choice.

Miss Gwendolyn Wilson

MECHANIC FALLS - Gwendolyn Wilson, 68, a long-time resident of Mechanic Falls died Thursday, March 24 at the Main Street Mechanic Falls Nursing Home.
She was born in West Paris on November 16, 1934, the daughter of Shirley and Clara Wilson. She had lived at the Pineland Center for a number of years before moving to the Main Street Mechanic Falls Nursing Home in 1987.
She attended a day program, Employment and Enrichment Services Outreach, provided by the John Murphy Homes. She loved the color red and enjoyed the sound of a man's voice, whether it be reading to her or just conversing. She enjoyed outdoor activities, art and playing games. She also enjoyed dressing fashionably. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends at John F. Murphy Homes. She is survived by her mother, Clara Wilson of West Paris; a brother, Ben Wilson of Livermore and a cousin, Doreen Wilbur of So. Woodstock.
A Memorial service will be held on Monday, April 7 at 10 a.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 26 W. Dwinal St., Mechanic Falls with the Rev. Melvin Young officiating. Interment will be later in the spring at South Woodstock Cemetery.

Mr. Stanley W. Flanders

PALM HARBOR, FL - Stanley W. Flanders, 53, of Palm Harbor, FL, died November 6, at home after a short illness.
He was born in Norway on September 22, 1950, the son of Albert (Mickey) Flanders and Cora (Frost) Flanders. He graduated from Oxford Hills High School in 1969 and moved to FL and served a tour in Vietnam.
Mr. Flanders was a licensed surveyor by trade, a volunteer fireman, an avid softball player and a wonderful husband, father and brother.
Survivors include his wife Kathleen of 22 years; two sons, Cody and Addison; a daughter, Brittney; five sisters, Winona Whitman of Homosassa, FL, Shirley Baur of Dunedin, FL, Patricia Barker of Bolsters Mills, Harrison, Alberta Brett of Oxford and Ann Flanders of Dunedin, FL.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lorraine Staples on October 23, 2003, and a brother, Albert E. (Sonny) Flanders Jr. on September 19, 1995.
Visiting hours were at the funeral home in FL on November 10, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Donations may be sent to Hospice Foundation of the Florida Seacoast, Inc., 300 East Bay Dr., Largo, FL 33770.

Mrs. Mary Ann Kelly

OTISFIELD - Mary Ann Kelly, 56, died Sunday evening, February 1, at St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston.
She was born in Wayland, NY, a daughter of A. Leighton Sturtevant and Marian McPhee. Mrs. Kelly enjoyed knitting, crocheting, canoeing, camping and gardening. She worked for Good Neighbors, Inc. for over 21 years where she cared for mentally handicapped adults.
Mrs. Kelly was predeceased by her father, and her much-loved pets, Bucky and Missy.
Surviving are her husband Nicholas Kelly; three daughters, Fawn Abd-El-Latif, Wendy Jensen and April Lacey; her son, William Leighton Brown; her mother; two sisters, Dawn Brooks and Terri Allen; her brother, Adam Sturtevant and grandchildren Thomas, Matthew, Timothy, Christopher, Robert, Logan, Julian, Tristan and Jalen.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home, 165 Quaker Ridge Rd., Casco where a funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Maine Special Olympics, 125 John Roberts Rd., So. Portland, ME 04015.

Mr. Stuart A. Cross Sr.

BETHEL - Stuart A. Cross Sr., 82, of Bethel, died at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris on Wednesday March 31, 2004.
Born in West Bethel on April 21, 1921, he was the son of Edward E. and Gladys May (Bennett) Cross. He was educated in local schools and served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, receiving a Purple Heart.
After leaving the Army he returned to Bethel and worked as a logger for many years, built and operated the Mt. Abram Skiway and later started and operated Cross
Excavation with his son. Mr. Cross was a member of the American Legion and was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Janice (Young) Cross, of Bethel; two sons, Jack Cross, and his wife, Sue, and Stuart Cross Jr., all of Bethel; two brothers, Donald Cross, of Bethel and Alton Cross of Massachusetts; two sisters, Norma Cross, of West Paris, and Mary Hester ,of Washington, and two grandchildren, Daniel Cross of Seattle, Washington, and Nicole Cross of South Vero Beach, Florida. He was predeceased by one brother, Norton Cross of Bethel.
Graveside services will be held at the West Bethel Cemetery later in the spring. Arrangements by
Greenleaf Funeral Home, Bethel.

Mr. Stanley Earle Smith

SOUTH PARIS - Stanley Earle Smith, 70, of South Paris died unexpectedly Saturday, June 5, 2004 at his home. He was born December 20, 1933, the son of Ralph and Alice Gammon Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Paris, graduating from Paris High School in 1951 and immediately enlisting in the Army. He served for 12 years as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean Conflict. After the military he helped his father operate Smith's Service Station in Market Square for many years. He was a devoted outdoorsman and a loving family man.
Survivors include a sister, Patricia Pearson of Springfield, VA; five children, Evon Smith of Las Vegas, NV, Lorie Shelley of Sacramento, CA, Mark Smith of South Paris, Jade Wilkinson of Washington state and Heidi Bennett of Bennington, NH; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by his brother, Vernon R. Smith of West Paris.
Family and friends attended funeral services Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Weston-Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main Street, South Paris.

Michael 'Mike' J. McCollister

SUMNER - Michael J. McCollister, 17, of Sumner and formerly of Mechanic Falls, passed away as the result of a fatal automobile accident on August 17, 2004.
He was born in Lewiston on August 23, 1986, the son of John E. McCollister and Sandra Marie Herrick.
Mike loved life and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father, attending Faith Bible Chapel Group and Church, spending quality time with his family and friends, and traveling with his grandparents.
Mike loved creating a stir whether it was with his teachers, friends, co-workers or family. He brought laughter and sunshine to all who knew him.
A senior a Buckfield High School, he was a member of the math team, winning several awards and ran sidelines for boys' varsity soccer games. He was enrolled in the Navy's delayed entry program for Nuclear Engineering to commence after graduation from high school in June of 2005.
He had been employed at C. F. Wells in Buckfield and presently was employed at Roy's All Steak in Auburn.
He is survived by his father, John, of Sumner; his mother, Sandra Herrick, his twin sister Michelle, a brother Matthew Herrick and his wife, Jessica; a nephew, Trevor Herrick and a niece, Octavia Herrick, all of Mechanic Falls; paternal grandparents, David and Sue Bryant, of Sumner and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Michael was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Albert and Marie Herrick, of West Paris and his paternal grandfather, Ray McCollister.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Andrews Funeral Home, High Street, Buckfield. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at the East Auburn Baptist Church on Friday with the Rev. Roger Cousineau officiating. Burial will be in the Tuelltown Cemetery, West Paris.
Memorials in Mike's memory may be made in the form of donations to the Faith Bible Chapel Youth Ministry, Auburn.

Mr. Alfred E. Allen

OXFORD - Alfred E. Allen, 76, of Jackson's Crossing Road in Oxford, died at his home on Saturday, September 4, 2004.
He was born in Denver, CO, and was brought up by his grandparents, Peter and Siiri Hakkarainen and he always had great stories about them.
Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1949 as a Seaman First Class and received a World War II Victory Medal.
He loved traveling and camping, people and had many friends. He also had neighbors for over 40 years that he thought the world of.
He will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Millie (Hazelton) Allen; a son, Vaikko Allen and wife Nicky of Augusta; a daughter, Helen Brown of MI; four step-daughters, Darlene Nicholas and husband Alen of New London, CT, Judith Harrington and husband Kevin of Dover, NH, Kathy Benson of Woodstock, Lori Hill and husband Gary of Waterford; one stepson, Ronald Glenn Hazelton and wife Joyce of Florence, TX; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held at the Finnish Cemetery in West Paris. Those wishing to make donations in his name may do so to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., Lewiston, ME 04243.
