Marion Lucille Chase

Wells- Marion Lucille Chase, 83 years, of Ocean Avenue died peacefully at her son’s Ronald’s home lovingly surrounded by her family.

Marion was born February 20, 1923 in Wells, ME the daughter of well-known fisherman, Austin and Emma Stott Guest. She grew up on Wells Beach and graduated Valedictorian from Wells High School in 1940.

Marion retired from the Wells Post Office after more than 20 years of service. She was also the baker for the Ogunquit Lobster Pound.

Marion was very active in the Wells Congregational Church where she was a member, a church officer, and sang in the choir. She was also active in the Wells Branch Extension. She enjoyed traveling in her motor home, camping, Maine Line Tours, and music.

Marion was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Ray Victor Chase, in February of 2006.

Surviving Marion are her sons Reginald Chase and Ronald Chase of Wells and Barry Chase of North Berwick; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

There will be a memorial graveside service for both Marion and her husband Ray on Saturday April 29 at 10 AM at Ocean View cemetery in Wells with Reverend Herb Henry officiating.

Marjorie W. Littlefield

Wells- Marjorie W. Littlefield, 85 years, of Flintlock Village died Monday April 24, 2006 at Varney Crossing Nursing Home in North Berwick.

Marjorie was born August 2, 1920 in York, Maine a daughter of Raymond and Gertrude Lutts Weare. She graduated from York High School in 1937 and went on to attend both Nasson College and McIntosh College.

Marjorie was the co-founder of the Milestone Motor Court in Ogunquit. She was also the bookkeeper for many of the local businesses. Marjorie was also very active in several clubs and organizations including Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Wells, the Ogunquit Women’s Club, and an active member of the Ogunquit Baptist Church.

Marjorie enjoyed gardening, bridge, canasta, and rug hooking. She loved spending time with her family and was especially fond of her great grandchildren.

Marjorie is survived by her sons Donnell Lord of Ogunquit and Weston Lord of Danforth; brothers Raymond and Arnold Weare both of Cape Neddick; sister Frances Parker of Gainesville, FLA; grandchildren Sharon Lord Young, William Lord, Rachael Lord, and Christopher Lord; and five great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 2 at 11 AM with Reverend Jon St. Pierre at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME. Interment will follow in First Parish cemetery in York.

Mary A. Cole

Mary A. (Cheney) Cole, 84, a lifelong resident of Wells, Maine, passed peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Friday, April 14, 2006.

She was born in Wells on January 19, 1922, daughter of the late Grover and Alberta Annis Cheney. Mary started her education in a one-room school house in Wells and was a graduate of Wells High School, Class of 1939.

Her husband, Charles A. Cole, died in 1991 after sharing 52 years of marriage. For many years, they spent their winters in Delray Beach, FL.

She was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 41 years, and in 1970 she followed in the footsteps of both her father and mother as postmaster in Wells—she served in this capacity until her retirement in 1980.

Mary was a member of The Congregational Church of Wells. She was also a member and Past Noble Grand of the Olive Rebekah Lodge #21 of Kennebunk, ME, Wells-Ogunquit Historical Society, Friends of the Wells Public Library, Ladies Auxiliary of the Wells Beach Hose Company, the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center and the National and Maine State Postmasters Associations. She was a member and served as Master of the Wells Grange #453 Patrons of Husbandry, a member of York County Pomona #14 and Maine State Grange. She remained involved in civic leadership and community activities well into her later years.

In 1968 Mary chaired a Wells Grange Community Progress Committee and suggested that the town of Wells needed a public library, and she committed herself to that vision for years. Through persistent lobbying, dedication and hard work, her goal became a reality when the Wells Public Library was dedicated in February 1979. She was recognized for her service as a founding member of the Wells Public Library and was bestowed with the status of Lifetime Honorary Director in 1991. A stained-glass window was installed in honor of Alberta (Cheney) Morison and Mary Cole for their long devotion to the Library in 1991.

In addition to being an accomplished knitter, Mary enjoyed researching her family genealogy and the rich history of the Town of Wells, bowling, reading, painting, card playing and going to bingo with friends.

Mary looked forward to family gatherings and outings, and she will be missed by all. For the past nine years she also enjoyed the companionship of Christy, her Collie.

She is survived by her children, Justice Roland A. Cole and his wife, Thomasina of Wells; Charlene Bailey and her husband, Robert of Salem, MA; Cheryl L. Cole of Silver Lake, NH; Roxane A. Cole and her husband, James Keil of Westbrook, ME; and a grandson, Pierce Cole of Wells.

She is also predeceased by her son, Richard Grover Cole, and her sister, Madelene M. Cheney.

Friends may call at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, Wednesday April 19th, 2006 from 4 to 8 PM with a Rebekah Memorial Service will be held at 7 PM.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM Thursday at the Congregational Church of Wells, Post Road, with the Reverend Herbert Henry officiating.

Interment will be at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells, ME.

In celebration of Mary‘s life, the family requests donations be made to the Wells Public Library, PO Box 699, Wells, Maine 04090.

Mary C. Sweet

Mary C. Sweet, 80, of Shady Lane, died Saturday afternoon at her residence.

She was born in Oswego, NY on September 9, 1925, the daughter of Paul B. and Grace Rodger Chase.

She spent her formative and high school years in Fulton, NY, and graduated from Fulton High School. She graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor’s Degree.

On July 30, 1949, she married Dr. Paul L. Sweet in Rochester, NY. Dr. and Mrs. Sweet moved to Danbury, CT in 1954 and lived there until 1986.

Mary was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Danbury. She was also a member of the Danbury Garden Club, and was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations. Locally, she was a volunteer at Laudholm Farm.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, coin and stamp collecting, and gardening. Her sons stated she was a terrific cook.

Survivors include: her husband of 56 years, of Wells; three sons: David L. Sweet of San Francisco, CA; Jeffrey R. Sweet of Sharon, MA; and Robert P. Sweet of South Freeport, ME. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be Thursday, December 8, 2005 from 2 to 4 PM only at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. The funeral will be held on Friday, December 9th at 1:00 PM at the chapel.

Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells.

Mary Jean Calder, 88, of Oak Street, died Tuesday, April 4, 2006 at her residence. Burial will be on Friday, April 7 in Evergreen Cemetery, Kennebunk. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at The Lighthouse Church of the Nazarene, 544 Post Road, Wells, ME.

Michael Lawrence McDonald

Michael Lawrence McDonald, 56, of State Street, died unexpectedly on Monday at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford. He was born in Norway, Maine on August 16, 1949, the son of Howard L. and Louise B. Metcalf McDonald.

His high school years were spent at Vermont Academy, graduating in 1967. He then attended the University of Hartford where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in education. While at the University of Hartford, he was an all-american baseball player. He also played and coached in the Hartford Twilight League for over 20 years, and he was named the “Catcher of the Half-Century” by the league. He will be long remembered as the Wells High School baseball coach from 1995 through 2004. In 2000, he became head baseball coach at the University of New England, Biddeford. While not coaching, Michael owned and operated Americana Sports Gallery, a sports memorabilia business, in Kennebunk. He was also a licensed auctioneer and could be found at many sports memorabilia auctions.

He was a former member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Newington, CT. He enjoyed sports, fishing, sports memorabilia and auctions.

Michael was pre-deceased by his wife, Hazel Lee.

Visiting hours will be Friday, December 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. only at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME., where a funeral will be held on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME 04090.

Payson L. Hunter 94 years a resident of Penny Lane Kennebunk died Sunday December 4, 2005 at his home.

He was born in Lenapah, OK on July 5, 1911 a son of George Washington and Louise (Loy) Hunter. He attended local schools in OK. In his younger years, he was a Boy Scout leader which he received an Eagle Scout. Payson graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in the class of 1933.

He served the U. S. Navy during World War II as LT. Junior Grade, stationed in Virginia Beach, VA.

He met his future wife Odette Young at the Worlds Fair in 1939 and they married in 1942.

He lived in Southport, CT where he was employed by the IBM in New York for 37 years before moving to Kennebunk in 1976.
He was an appraisal agent for Jack Libby Real Estate of Kennebunk until 2004. In 1980’s he was involved in the expansion and addition of Kennebunk High School, where he was honored with an award.

Payson was a member and past president of the Senior Center of the Lower Village of Kennebunk, member and past president of the Southern Maine Agency of Aging and member of the Lions Club of Kennebunk- Kennebunkport. He also volunteer drove for the F.I.S.H. program for several years.

He enjoyed water coloring painting, sailing and enjoyed following Politics.

Payson was predeceased by his wife Odette Young Hunter who died in 2003.

He is survived by two sons Payson Y. Hunter of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and George L Hunter of Kennebunk; a daughter Pamela L. Emery of Centerville, MA; a brother G. Truman Hunter of Oxford, Ohio; and four grandchildren Matthew and Taylor Hunter, Travis Emery and Elinor Barish.

Visiting Hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday December 7, 2005 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk where a funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday with the Reverend Carolyn Lambert officiating. Private Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Springvale, Me.

Should friends desire memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Senior Center at Lower Village 175 Port Road Kennebunk, Maine 04043.

Priscilla Clark Prentice

Priscilla Clark Prentice 84 years a resident of Rollins Lane Kennebunk died peacefully Monday April 10, 2006 at the Kennebunk Nursing Center.

She was born in Quincy, MA on June 21, 1921 a daughter of Waldo Bishop and Helen Day Clark.

She graduated from Simmons College the day before her marriage to Edward “Ted” Prentice in June of 1943.

She spent her career as a home economics teacher and retired as department head from Nashoba Regional High School in 1986. She and Ted retired to Panther Pond in Raymond, ME.

She is survived by her son Steven Prentice and his wife Joan and her daughter Laini Shillito and her partner Bob Lee all of Kennebunk. She also leaves a sister Nancy Hooper of Kennebunk and a brother Ronald Clark of Marblehead, MA and 2 grandsons and 3 great- grandchildren.

Memorial Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 PM Friday at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk where a memorial service will be held at 2 PM at the Chapel.

Interment will be in Raymond Hill cemetery in Raymond, Maine.

In Lieu of Flowers donations may be made to the Raymond Village Library, P.O. Box 297, Raymond, ME 04071 in Mrs. Prentice’s memory.
