Arline Austin, 97 years, of Merriam Street Berwick, died August 3 at Varney Crossing Nursing Center.

Arline was born in Berwick, ME December 29, 1908 a daughter of Harry D. and Millie Hartford Knox. She graduated High School in Berwick and from McIntosh College in Dover, NH.

She was employed as a secretary at the University of New Hampshire for many years following the death of her husband Maurice “Sonny” Austin in 1962.

Two daughters, Betty Gale of McLean, VA and Marjorie Smith of Kittery; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews survive Arline.

Friends may call on Sunday August 6 from 2-4 pm at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 7 at 10 am at the Laing-Bibber Chapel with Rev. Les Pettit officiating.

Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery in Berwick.

Arthur E. Lavigne, Jr.

Berwick, ME- Arthur Eugene Lavigne, Jr., 87 years, a resident of Pine Hill Mobile Home Park, Berwick, died Thursday October 12 at Varney Crossing Nursing Home, lovingly surrounded by his family.

Arthur was born in Everett, MA on January 19, 1919 a son of Arthur and Anna Hoffman Lavigne, Sr. He served in the U. S. Navy during WW II. On June 1, 1946 he married Eileen Phillips. They celebrated 60 years together this last June.

Arthur was a firefighter for several years in Plainfield, NJ after the war. He then worked as plant manager for several manufacturing firms until his retirement in 1980. He was a communicant at St. Martin’s Church in Somersworth, NH.

He enjoyed Pinochle, boating, ice sailing and yard work. He was a devoted family man and quite an athlete having played baseball and semi-pro football.

Arthur is predeceased by his infant son James Paul; his brothers Eugene and Harold; and his sister Anna Nicholson.

His wife Eileen Phillips Lavigne; sons Ronald Lavigne of Jaffrey, NH and Thomas Lavigne of Berwick; daughters Carol Horgan of Acton, ME, Karen Wells of Rochester, NH, and LouAnn Lavigne of Clearwater, FL; 10 grandchildren, Steven, Justin, Michelle, Jennifer, Aimee, Tara, Matthew, Michael, Timothy and Daniel; 8 great grandchildren survive Arthur.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Tuesday, October 17th at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 18th at 11 am at St. Martins Church in Somersworth, NH with Fr. Aaron Pfaff officiating. Interment will follow in New Riverside cemetery in Alton, NH.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, 47 Elm Street, North Berwick, ME.

Azmey S. Rashed, 53 years, formerly of Boston, beloved husband of Ann, beloved father of Sarah and Nadia died Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at his home lovingly surrounded by his family. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 20 at Ocean View cemetery in Wells, Maine at 11:30 AM.

Barbara J. Kamm of Kennebunkport, Maine, beloved grandmother, wife and mother died on August 4, 2006. Barbara died peacefully and was surrounded by family and close friends.

Barbara was born in Ilion, New York. She graduated from Catholic University of America and the University of New England and served proudly and with honor in the United States Navy.

She had a distinguished career in the fields of adoption case work, medicine and counseling and cherished the many long lasting friendships throughout her career. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, cooking and gardening.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband Chris, sons Patrick, Kim and Joel, daughters Gabrielle and Aimee and grandson Patrick along with many other dear friends and family members.

Memorial Mass will be held Monday, August 7th, 2006 at 1 PM at St. Martha’s Church, 34 Portland Rd (US Route One), Kennebunk, ME.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be sent to the Christian Children’s Fund, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richmond, VA 23294 or March of Dimes, 60 Gray Road, Unit # 8 Falmouth, Maine 04105-2024 in the name of Barbara J. Kamm.

Barbara L. Lennon

Barbara L. Lennon, age 73 of Biddeford, died Monday, May 29th at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME.

She was born June 16, 1932 in Biddeford, Maine the daughter of the late Archie Smith and the late, Helen (Maxwell) Smith.

Mrs. Lennon graduated from Kennebunk High School in 1950. She served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Saco and for many years was a member of Pine Tree C.B. Club. Barbara enjoyed knitting, crocheting and playing beano. She especially enjoyed watching the Patriots, Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, NASCAR Racing and traveling across the United States.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Donald F. Lennon in 1972.
She is survived by her three sons: Michael Lennon of Biddeford, Kevin Lennon of Alfred, ME and Mark Lennon of Davenport, IA and four daughters: Sharon McAlevey and Dawn Delano, both of Biddeford, Mary Beth Chang of Gaithersberg, MD and Lynn Devens of Reston, VA; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her two sisters, Sally Rideout of Lake Placid, FL and Linda Leprohon of Biddeford, ME.

Visiting hours are Thursday, June 1 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, Maine. A funeral service will be held Friday, June 2 at 1:00 PM at the chapel. Interment will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport, ME

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Research & Education Foundation, PO Box 553 DTS, Portland, ME 04112- or to the American Diabetes Association, 163 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101- in Mrs. Lennon’s memory.

Barbara M. Dillon, 90, of May Street, Biddeford, formerly of Berwick, died Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford following a long illness.

She was born in Boston, MA on October 28, 1915, the daughter of William and Barbara Eberth Eagan.

She grew up in Lowell, MA and attended schools there.

She was a longtime homemaker and a devoted mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Dillon was a member of The Lady of Peace Catholic Church and enjoyed gardening, antiques, traveling and was an avid reader.

Barbara was predeceased in death by her husband John in 1994, a daughter Barbara Coleman in 1999 and a brother William Eagan.

She is survived by three daughters Maureen Anaya of Berwick, Patricia Thomas of East Falmouth, MA and Anna Coombs of South Berwick, ME and a son Michael Dillon of North Berwick, ME and10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren

Visiting hours will be Friday, October 13th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Laing Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 14th at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Berwick.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick.

Barry P. Rosen
1947-2006

After a long and courageous battle with multiple health problems, Barry P. Rosen, 58, passed away peacefully in Kennebunk, Maine on Friday, September 08, 2006. born November 9, 1947 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Barry was the son of Nathan and Mary (Sax) Rosen. He was a graduate of Swampscott High School and Bentley College where he received a degree in Accounting. He served in the National Guard Reserves. He was a hard-working self-made man who owned and operated International Purchasing Associates in Kennebunk and in Massachusetts.

On June 30, 1996, he married Michele LaVerdiere in Wells, Maine. Barry took pride in participating in many endeavors and travels with his wife, Michele; he enjoyed taking his dog Cagney to lunch and for daily walks; playing cards on Monday nights with his buddies; traveling to Las Vegas with his brother-in-law Tom, and kibitzing with his many business acquaintances.

He touched many lives with his generous nature, his sense of humor and his courage. He gave tirelessly and generously to his wife, friends, family and everyone he came in contact with. He volunteered at a local food pantry; was a member of the Masonic Ocean Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Maine and the Consolidated Lodge, A.F. & A.M. of Massachusetts; the Aleppo Shriners; and was a Corporator at Kennebunk Savings Bank.

He is survived by his wife, Michele, his mother, Mary Rosen; his brother Martin Rosen and wife, Louise; his father and mother-in-law, Clayton and Mary LaVerdiere, his sister-in-law Susan Bannister and husband Don; his brother-in-law Tom LaVerdiere and wife, Gina; his brother-in-law Charlie LaVerdiere and wife, Brenda; his sister-in-law, Mary Littlefield; his brother-in-law Mark LaVerdiere; his sister-in-law Ann West, and husband Rich; his sister-in-law Kathleen Worcester and husband, Edward; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Sunday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A private burial will be held at St. Francis Catholic cemetery in
Waterville, Maine on Monday, September 11th.

Bertha B. Collins

North Berwick, Maine - Bertha Bennett Collins died on July 14, 2006 at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center. She was born in South Berwick on March 27, 1915, the daughter of Olive (Miller) and George H. Bennett. Both of her grandfathers were Civil War Veterans, and one of them, Horace Bennett, fought at the Battle of Gettysburg.
She graduated from Berwick Academy, Class of 1933. Following graduation, she was employed by South Berwick Shoe Company.
She married Roland Charles Collins in January of 1941 and for the next 55 years made her home in Berwick, on the Collins farm. As a young woman, she sang professionally at various churches in the local area and made two professional singing recordings.
She and her husband raised beef cattle and, with their three sons, exhibited the cattle throughout New England. She was involved with 4-H in York County for many years and never worked away from the family homestead again.
She was a member of the South Berwick Baptist Church as well as Order of the Eastern Star.
In later years, she and Roland traveled throughout North America in their mobile camper.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Roland C. Collins, in 1996, and two sons, Carleton L. Collins in 1996 and Larry G. Collins in 1993. A sister, Eva Goodwin, and a brother, Fred Bennett, also predeceased her.
Bertha is survived by her son, Dr. Donald R. Collins and his wife, Charlotte, of Berwick; and two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Martha Collins of Berwick, and Mrs. Nadine Collins of Hooksett, NH.
Also surviving are 6 grandsons, Daniel of Brooklyn, NY, Timothy and Sean of Berwick, ME; Lance of Hooksett, NH, Devin of Manchester, NH, and Bryson of Pittsfield, NH.
Surviving also are two granddaughters, Dr. Valerie Wherley and her husband Dr. Scott Wherley, of Norwalk, CT, and Maureen Collins of Marblehead, MA. One great-grandson, Cooper Collins Wherley of Norwalk, CT, also survives. Also surviving are her brother, Elbert (Bob) Bennett and a very dear niece, Alice Burleigh, of Rochester, NH, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to the staff at Varney Crossing for the excellent care given to Bertha throughout the last several years.
Calling hours are Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, where a Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Portland Street Cemetery, South Berwick, ME.

Blanche C. Ogilvie

Wells, ME - Blanche C. Ogilvie died June 15, 2006 at York Hospital with her daughter by her side. She was born February 28, 1916 in Rochester, VT to Frederick and Laura (Clegg) Cole.

She graduated from Randolph High School in Vermont, and obtained her RN from Gifford Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, also in Vermont.
Upon completion of her schooling, she studied surgery at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital from July – December 1939. She then served as assistant superintendent and chief operating room nurse at Gifford Memorial Hospital for 2 ˝ years.

After coming to Maine, she worked in York, Goodall, Webber and Trull Hospitals. Usually private duty – especially in homes.

In 1949, after moving to Wells, she helped build, with her husband, Colleens’s Motor Court, which consisted of 11 small cottages, a six-room motel and its well-known landmark, the large lighthouse near the entrance.

Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, crocheting, crafts, gardening and traditional rug hooking.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley B. Ogilvie on September 18, 2001. They were married for 58 years. Blanche was also predeceased by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Surviving are her daughter, Colleen S. Ogilvie, a sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday at Ocean View Cemetery, Wells with the Reverend Patricia Smith officiating. Arrangements under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.
