January 07, 2007
Kennebunk , ME

Edgar F. Dickinson passed away January 7, 2007 at the age of 84 surrounded by his family at his home in Kennebunk Beach, Maine following a brief illness. Ed was born in Latham, New York, one of six children of Lottie Diamond Dickinson and Isaac Dickinson. He resided most of his life in the Albany N.Y. area while spending a good portion of his summers for the last 45 years and his retired years in Kennebunk Beach, Maine before moving there permanently in 2002.
Educated in Latham and Watervliet, N.Y., Ed earned a B.A. degree from Sienna College and an M.A. degree from New York State Teachers College at Oneonta as well as having pursued additional graduate studies at the University of Maine at Orono. Prior to attending college, Ed served his country in World War II after enlisting in 1943. Ed was assigned to Company B, 28th Regiment, 8th Infantry Division and was active in the European theatre, moving with his troop throughout England, France and Germany before receiving an honorable discharge in the fall of 1945. After returning home, and largely due to his war experiences, Ed developed a passion for aviation and spent several years piloting small aircraft as a hobby and as a member of a flying club based out of Albany, N.Y.
Devoting most of his life to education, Ed worked as both a teacher and administrator in school districts in North Colonie, N.Y. and Cornwall, CT. He truly loved teaching children throughout his whole life and, in addition to his work, he found many volunteer outlets for working with youth including combining his love for teaching with his love for the outdoors through being a leader with the Boy Scouts.
After retiring, Ed had more time to devote to his numerous hobbies including golf, woodworking and model boat building. Throughout his life, Ed crafted many beautiful pieces of furniture and intricate model ships. Ed was also an active volunteer for Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm and the veterans group of The Senior Center in Kennebunk, Maine.
Ed served on the Boards of the School Systems Federal Credit Union in Troy, N.Y. and the Congregational Church in Salisbury, CT. He was also a member of the American Legion post in Voorheesville, N.Y.
Ed was completely dedicated to his family and spent countless hours with first his daughter and then his grandson conveying to them his wisdom about gardening, nature, woodworking, history, model building and life in general. Ed possessed an outgoing personality and he was everyone’s friend. He loved people and conversation and would happily strike up a conversation with anyone, anytime. He was one of those unique individuals who always saw the good in people and, if it wasn’t readily apparent, he brought it out.
