Ernestine 'Penny' Weidul
December 08, 2006
Kennebunkport

Ernestine Margaret “Penny” Weidul, 83 years, died Friday, December 8 at Bradford Court in Kennebunk.

Penny was born in Petticodiac, New Brunswick on August 10, 1923 a daughter of Uz and Margaret Blakney. She and her family moved to the ‘States’ when she was just a year old to seek their fortunes here. They settled in Dedham, Mass where she graduated from Dedham High School. It was there that she met her sweetheart and loving husband of 64 years, Ernest Weidul. It was during their high school years that the War had started and they decided to marry on February 1, 1942. Ernest went to China in the service in 1943, and Penny enrolled in Fisher College in Boston where she earned the nickname ‘Penny’.

As a young girl Penny wished to be an artist, but her desires had to wait until after college and marriage. Serious art training began only after she went to Shanghai to be with Ernest, a foreign service officer, in 1947 and became a private student of Anatole Effimoff. Previously with the Art Department of Petrograd University, Mr. Effimoff was steeped in the traditional techniques of the “old school”. Penny was evacuated from China before she could complete two years with Anatole. She went to Formosa for six months and continued sketching, painting with oils and learning to use a Japanese paint brush.

Penny won several prizes at shows in the Washington, D.C. area, shortly after returning to the U. S. One of the prizes was a scholarship with Bruno Beran, another traditional painter. This was followed by two years at the Corcoran School of Art assimilating the new trends in America.

Diplomacy called Ernest again, this time to Iran, ironically a country whose religious atmosphere kept Penny from portraying faces. Penny concentrated on representing scenic vistas. The next diplomatic post was in India, a land of warm people in beautiful dress. Penny was in her glory painting the portraits of all the new friends she was making. Many of the people she painted would bring their families to her shows to see their portraits and to meet the artist.

Ernest’s retirement in 1974, meant a new home in Kennebunkport for the family as well as an opportunity for Penny to open her own studio and sell her paintings. She opened the Old River House Gallery on Ocean Avenue. There she was able to fully realize her dream of exhibiting as well as selling her oil paintings, watercolors and sketches.

Penny was an avid reader and an gourmet cook. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, traveling, and antiquing. She was especially knowledgeable about early American antiques and dolls.
Above all, Penny was a devoted wife and mother to her three children, encouraging their free spirits, expression and a sense of learning from other cultures.

Penny and Ernest belonged to the Newcomers Club when they first moved to Kennebunkport. Penny was also a member of Women in the Arts in Boston and New York.
Surviving Penny are her loving husband of 64 years Ernest; son Ernest Brian Weidul; daughters Lori Jackson and Linda Ketcham; brother Royden Blakney; sister Doris Anderson; three grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.

There will be a private memorial service held by Penny’s family.

The family suggest donations in her memory be made to the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust P. O. Box 7004 Cape Porpoise, Maine 04014.
