Jacques Downs
September 13, 2006
Kennebunkport

KENNEBUNKPORT - Jacques M. Downs, 80, China trade scholar, retired humanities professor and long-time resident of Kennebunkport, died suddenly Wednesday, September 13 in Biddeford Pool, Maine. Mr. Downs was a teacher, mentor and political advocate. After completing his doctorate at Georgetown University in 1961, Mr. Downs moved to Kennebunkport, Maine, to take a job teaching American history at St. Francis College (later the University of New England). He has been a mentor to hundreds, and was known for welcoming his students to his book-filled home to discuss ideas, and to learn about life in his busy kitchen.
When not baking bread, gardening, or serving coffee or his home brewed beer, Mr. Downs could be found in his study. Along with numerous academic articles, he published a history of Biddeford and Saco, Maine, Cities on the Saco (1985), and a history of the South Congregational Church of Kennebunkport. But his life’s work was a book on the early American China trade, The Golden Ghetto: The American Commercial Community at Canton and the Shaping of American China Policy (1997).

Mr. Downs was born 1926 in Detroit, Michigan to two working journalists: Elizabeth Watson Downs and Jacques Silk Downs. He spent the bulk of his childhood and youth in Berkeley, California. His mother raised him and his sister, DeeDee during the Depression. Mr. Downs attended Berkeley High School, and University of California, Berkeley. He learned Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA, and served in Berlin during the Korean War.
Later, Mr. Downs joined the Foreign Service, rising to the level of Vice Counsel. In 1961, he completed a Ph.D. in U.S. Business History, before moving to Kennebunkport with his young family to work at St. Francis. Throughout his 35-year tenure at the college, Mr. Downs was committed to challenging, supporting and engaging students. He served for many years as a department chair, established a scholarship program to help students study abroad, and frequently took groups of students to places like Mexico, Russia, Quebec and Morocco. Although Mr. Downs retired in 1996, he continued to teach at least one class a year.
He was an active member of the Democratic Party of Kennebunkport, even running for the state legislature. In addition to politics, Mr. Downs had many passions: social justice—including leading a women’s consciousness-raising group—gardening, collecting—especially Chinese objects—and his family. A prolific letter and e-mail correspondent, Mr. Downs kept touch with a wide circle of former students, colleagues, and friends.
He lost his sister, Deedee, in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Eva, three children, Andreae and Jonathan, both of Newton, Mass., and Alex, of Portland, ME, and five grandchildren: Susannah Glickman, Juliette Glickman, Caleb, Ellen and Elijah Collins-Downs.
A celebration of Jacques’ life will be held on Saturday, October 7th at the University of New England Conference Center, 2-5 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers to the Jacques Downs Scholarship Fund, University of New England, 716 Stevens Ave, Portland, ME 04103

Jessica J. Hodsdon
November 03, 2006
Kennebunk,Me

Jessica “Jessie” Hodsdon of Kennebunk died unexpectedly Friday November 3, 2006. Jessie was born September 2, 1985, and spent her entire life with her family in Kennebunk.

Jessie attended Kennebunk schools, receiving her diploma from Kennebunk High School in 2003.

Jessie was a “people person” becoming friends with practically everyone she came in contact with. She was involved in many activities, including girls scout, grade school basketball, field hockey and school band. The passion of her teenage years was horseback riding, both for pleasure and competition. Although Jessie was a gentle soul, she was also a determined and accomplished equestrian competitor.
Jessie competed with her horses Honey, Sonny, and Joe Perry, at local and regional events from her local barn Hi-Stepping Equestrian Center in Arundel, to the Hollis Equestrian Center, Skowhegan State Fair, Deerfield, NH State Fair and her favorite, the Eastern State Exposition in Springfield, MA. In 1999 Jessie attended the World Championship competition in Louisville, KY with her friend Morgan Towne, who was competing in this international event.

Jessie had a smile that would light up the room: it was always an uplifting occasion to be around her. She was intuitive and insightful, especially with regard to interpersonal communication and relationships. In these areas she had wisdom well beyond her years and friends and relatives of all ages learned much from her.

The illness that caused her life to end at such a tender age was cruel beyond most people’s imaginations, but she endured all the pain and suffering dealt to her without complaint. She was a fighter who did all she could, for a year and half; to resist and overcome her disease- but, in the end, this wonderful, young friend, daughter, sister and relative, couldn’t fight any longer.

Her personal reflections in her diary over the last few months indicated that she knew that she was going to Heaven and wanted to be an angel there, helping and ministering to others.

She is survived by her loving family her mother and father Stephen and Denise Hodsdon, her older brother Andrew Hodsdon and her younger sister Allison Hodsdon all of Kennebunk, as well as her many friends and extended family who grieve immensely but know that she is finally at peace.

Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 PM Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk, Maine where a funeral services will be held at 4 PM at the Chapel.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to:
the National Alliance on Mental Illness Donor Services
1 Bangor Street
Augusta, ME 04330
