Thelma E. Sweeney 87 years, a resident of Atria, Kennebunk formerly of Flintlock Village, Wells and Lexington, MA died Saturday July 22, 2006 at the York Hospital, York, ME.

She was born in New Brunswick, Canada on October 13, 1918 a daughter of A Selkirk and Effie (Bryenton) Carter and the stepdaughter of Agnes (Miller) Carter. She graduated from Somerville High School and Mansfield Academy of Boston.

Thelma resided for many years in Lexington and Burlington, MA and owned the Vogue Beauty Shoppe of Lexington, MA for over twenty- five years. She was a member of the Pilot International (a service club for professional women).

In the late 1980’s, She moved to Maine where she was a member of the St. Mary’s Church of Wells. She belonged to the St Mary’s Sodality and she worked many church functions over the years.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.

Her husband Maurice H. Sweeney predeceased her.

She is survived by her two daughters Janet Sponagle and her husband Owen of Harvard, MA and Maureen Brown and her husband Bruce of Moody, ME. Three loving grandchildren Sean, Marc and Jeffrey Brown and four great grandchildren Tristan, Halle, Jonathan and Gabriel Brown.

Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 8 PM Wednesday July 26, 2006 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM Thursday at the St. Mary’s Church Eldridge Rd Wells.

Interment will be held at 2:30 PM at the Westview Cemetery, Bedford Rd, Lexington, MA.

Theodora T. 'Teddi' Pulsifer, PhD

Theodora T. "Teddi" Pulsifer, PhD, 78, of Ocean Avenue, died unexpectedly at her residence.

She was born in Boston, MA on March 11, 1928, the daughter of Stephen and Stephanie (Solnick) Prodan. She grew up in the Boston area, attending local schools. She completed her undergraduate degree at Northeastern University, and earned her Doctorate in Law from Boston University.

Together with her husband Gordon, they owned and operated the Law Offices of Pulsifer and Pulsifer in Saugus, MA for many years.

She was a avid fan of Boston sports teams, especially the Celtics.

Theodora was a member of the Boston University Law School Alumni Association.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Gordon in 1979.

Survivors include:
2 sons: Thor Thomas Pulsifer of Wells, ME.
Stephen Pulsifer of Jacksonville, FL
1 daughter: Susan Menard of FL
her brother: Stephen Prodan of Minnesota

There are no services. Burial will be private. Arrangements under the direction of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME.

Thomas F. Rooney Sr.

Thomas F. Rooney Sr. 75 years, a resident of Beachwood Terrace, Wells died Friday, May 12, 2006 at his home after a long illness.

He was born in Malden, MA on July 15, 1930 a son of Joseph Leo and Marion (Nelson) Rooney and graduated from Malden High School the class of 1949.

He served with the United States Army in the Korean War. He was a boxer while serving in the army.

Thomas was an Ironworker for Local 7 of Boston for over 30 years and served on the Union Executive Board for several years.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church where he was active in the Food Pantry for several years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Wells.

He enjoyed traveling and dining out.

He was predeceased by his first wife Frances Gunther Rooney who died in 2003 and his brother James Rooney and a sister Barbara Pariseau.

He is survived by his wife Ruth (Dunigan) Dooley of Wells, two sons Joseph Rooney and his wife Nancy of Salem, NH and Thomas F. Rooney Jr. of Downey, CA., two daughters Maryann R. Fink and her husband Lewis of Sanford and Patricia Ziehler and her husband Robert of Melbourne, FL. Five brothers Joseph Rooney of Reading, MA, Larry Rooney of Lynn, MA, Richard Rooney of Davenport, FL, Robert Rooney of Lowell, MA and Donald Rooney of Lake Havasu, AZ and a sister Kay Meader of Revere, MA., seven grandchildren and as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass will be held 10 AM Monday May 15, 2006 at the St. Mary’s Church Eldridge Road Wells, MEe with the Reverend Joseph Ford officiating.

Should friends desire, a memorial donation may be made to the St. Mary’s Food Pantry, P.O. Box 368, Wells, Maine 04090 or to the Salvation Army, 191 Main Street, Sanford, ME 04073 in Mr. Rooney’s memory.

Verna B. Green

Verna Bell Green, 83, died early Sunday morning at Peninsula Medical Center in Salisbury, MD following a short illness.

She was born in West Lebanon, NH on July 8, 1922, the daughter of Charles L. and Emily Alice (Bliss) Emery.

Verna was the former owner and proprietor of V & R Ceramics in Putnam, CT., and Heather’s Craft Shop in Island Falls, ME. She was a certified ceramics teacher, and had taken courses from the Famous Artists Institute in Westport, CT.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph C. Green in 1978; a daughter, Pamela Cross in 1981; a sister, Jacqueline Holden; her granddaughter Natalie Green, and a brother.

Survivors include: 5 sons: Andrew Green of Seabrook, NH; Eric Green of Wells, ME; Jason Green of Sanford, ME; Gregory Green of Mount Pleasant, MN; Scott Green of Sangerville, ME; 3 daughters: Hope Entwistle of Spring, TX; Colette Green of Marlboro, NH; Heather Lemay of Girdletree, MD; 2 sisters: Shirley Dahill of Ossipee, NH; Sandra Jillson of Athol, MA; 20 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren

Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 21, 2006 from 6 to 8 pm at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to: The American Heart Association, Memorial and Tribute Processing Center, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220-3049.

Verne Milton Brackett

Berwick

Verne M. Brackett, 92, passed away at the Varney Crossing Nursing Home Facility in North Berwick, Maine after a long illness.

Born in North Berwick, Maine, he was the son of John D. and Annie Abbott Brackett.

A year after his birth the family moved to the current Brackett farm in Berwick where he resided all of his life.

A graduate of Berwick High School, Verne went to work for the Public Service Company of New Hampshire where he was employed for forty-four years. He served for four years in the United States Army during World War II, spending the majority of his time in Calcutta, India. After completion of his military service he came back to Berwick with his new bride, Anna Jean Swanson of Keyport, Washington.

Together they raised cattle and maintained an apple orchard where they grew apples and sold sweet cider to many of the local area residents.

He was a member of the Free Masons St. Johns Lodge in South Berwick, Maine, the Berwick American Legion Post 179, and the Berwick Methodist Church. He was a long time member of the Berwick Fire Department, a charter member of the Shells Angels, a town selectman, and served as an interim town manager. He was always very proud to be an active participant in his community.
He was an avid fan of the Boston Celtics, the Boston Red Sox, and his Buick convertible, which he could be seen driving with the top down in all seasons of the year.

He was pre-deceased by his wife Anna Jean in 1991, his brother Irving in 1949, and his father John in 1962.

He is survived by a daughter Colleen Brackett, a son Stephen Brackett and his wife Elaine, a grandson Christopher John Brackett of Newmarket, New Hampshire, a grandson Aaron Carter Brackett and his wife Lien and daughter Milana of Rollinsford, New Hampshire, and a niece Dianne Price of La Pine, Oregon.

There will be no funeral.

A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Varney Crossing Nursing Home, c/o Donna Ford, Activities Director, 47 Elm Street, North Berwick, Maine, 03901.

Virginia Eileen Dionne

Kennebunk- Virginia Eileen Dionne, R.N., 80 years, of Gooch Avenue, Kennebunk Beach, died peacefully in her home on Friday, December 22, 2006.

Virginia was born in Quincy, MA on June 18, 1926, a daughter of Edward and Mary (Mooney) Barry. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Weymouth, MA and graduated from the Quincy City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She went on to work as a high level pediatric nurse at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Upon returning to work at City Hospital in Quincy, she met Dr. William E. Dionne in 1948 and they married in 1949. Following their move to Maine, she practiced as a nurse and assisted her husband in his fledgling practice in Springvale, until the birth of their first child William, Jr. She then devoted all of her time to taking care of their home and raising their much loved six children. After the death of her husband in 1977, Virginia returned to nursing part-time while living in Greensboro, NC. She retired in 1979 and moved to Kennebunk Beach to live in the house that her four sons built for her.

Virginia loved her family and was a devoted mother and wife. She was extremely proud of the fact that all of her children were successful in achieving higher degrees in education, and took particular pride in the fact that her two daughters followed in her footsteps and became nurses. She was described as extremely loyal to her family and friends. All through her adult life, she enjoyed antiquing, both collecting and selling. She was an avid reader and enjoyed keeping up with the political issues of the day. She especially enjoyed the beach and the gift of the family home that her “boys” built.

Virginia’s husband, Dr. William E. Dionne, M.D. predeceased her in 1977.

Virginia is survived and will be greatly missed by her sons William E. Dionne, Jr. and his wife Diana of Kennebunk, E. Michael Dionne of Kennebunk, Mark R. Dionne and his wife Pamela of Sanford, and James R. Dionne and his wife Kimberly of Bucksport; daughters Patrice Mary Hamden, R.N. of Kennebunk, and Mariellen Dionne, R.N. of Boulder, CO; brother Edward F. Barry; sister Mary Barry Alves, R.N.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Thursday, December 28 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, ME. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 29 at 10 AM at our chapel on Summer Street with Father Tom Murphy.

Virginia Marie Lanigan

Virginia Marie Lanigan 97 years, a 35 year resident of Kennebunk, most recently of Landing Way, and previously Old Port Road, Kennebunk, and Somerville Mass died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at the Kennebunk Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She was born in Bangor, Maine on August 22, 1909 a daughter of Charles and Laura (Jones) Ware. She graduated from Bangor High School and attended Nursing School in Boston.

She was a nurse for over twenty-five years in the Somerville, MA area and Kennebunk areas.

She was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

She was predeceased by her husband Leo J. Lanigan, her son Paul T. Lanigan , six sisters Catherine Richardson, Laura Vachon, Frances Grey, Doris Weart, Margaret Lambert and Belle Sorenson and a brother Charles Ware.

She is survived by her daughter in law Jacquelyn Lanigan of Kennebunk, her five grandchildren, Martin Lanigan and his wife Karen of Basking Ridge, NJ, Janet V. Libby and her husband Ron of Spotsylvania, VA, Rosemary Bourgault and her husband John of Casa Robles, CA., Leo J. Lanigan and his wife Bethaney of Kingsbury, CA, William R. Lanigan of Kennebunk, eight great Grandchildren and one great –great grandchild.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday December 26th at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk, ME.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM Wednesday December 27th at the St Martha’s Church Portland Road, Kennebunk.

Interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk in the spring.

Should friends desire memorial donation may be made to the Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 158 Ross Road, Kennebunk, ME 04043 in Mrs. Lanigan’s memory.

Virginia Ray

Virginia S. Ray of Kennebunkport, Maine who was known for her columns in the York County Coast Star, died suddenly at Southern Maine Medical Center on Thursday, June 15 following a brief illness. She was 74.

She was born in Chicago and was raised on Long Island, New York and in Kennebunkport, Maine. She married Wilson Kennedy Ray in Alexandria, VA in 1952. She and Wilson lived in many wonderful places around the globe, including South Bend, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lausanne, Switzerland, and Tokyo, Japan. She and Wilson moved to Kennebunkport in 1987.

Ginny was an avid tennis player at the Kennebunk River Club. She was also involved in a variety of charities in the Kennebunks.

As a freelance writer for the York County Coast Star, she contributed weekly columns about current events along the Southern Maine seacoast. Her weekly columns were enjoyed by many locals and summer folk alike.

She enjoyed traveling. In the early 90’s she and her husband spent several months in Czechoslovakia while he volunteered for SCORE. They took several cruises across the Atlantic. More recently, she traveled with her sister Edie on an Alaskan cruise, where they had a wonderful time together.

She was the daughter of Cora and Russell Stafford and the granddaughter of Professor and Mrs. George Howland of Chicago and Kennebunkport.

She leaves behind her beloved daughter Virginia Bouchillon, son-in-law Scott, grandchildren Kerry and Charlie, of Alpharetta, Georgia, her sister Edith Bruce of Woods Hole, MA, her sister Sally Barloga of Scaly Mountain, NC.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 20th at St. Ann’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport. The Rev. M.L. Agnew and Rev. Charles H. Whiston will officiate.
