Virginia Smith Phelps passed away on Monday, July 17, 2006, in Kennebunk, Maine.

Virginia Elizabeth Smith was born on April 30, 1915, in Terre Haute, Indiana, of George Watts Smith and Ida Robertson Smith. She received her baccalaureate degree from Indiana State Teachers College in Music in 1936. She was married to John Milton Phelps until his death in 1978.

She was a resident of Prairieton, Indiana, for most of her life. She assisted her mother in running Smith-Phelps Farms and was active in community life. She enriched the lives of her family, friends and community with her talent and love of music and even conducted the Prairieton United Methodist Church choir for more than 20 years.

She moved to Kennebunk, Maine, in 1985 in order to be closer to one of her children. There her community involvement continued with particular emphasis upon the music program at Christ Church. Among her many interests were life long memberships in PEO and Eastern Star.

Virginia She is survived by her children: John Michael Phelps of Kennebunkport, Maine; Beth Phelps Ray of Corvallis, Oregon; and George Smith Phelps of Marietta, Georgia; her grandchildren: Stephanie Elizabeth Ray of Columbus, Ohio; Katherine Rebecca Hall of Deer Island, Oregon; Michael Edward Ray of Columbus, Ohio; and Michelle Phelps Tackett of Kennesaw, Georgia; and her great-grandchildren: Drew Ray of Columbus, Ohio; Jonny Ray of Columbus, Ohio; Jake Tackett of Kennesaw, Georgia; and Haley Tackett of Kennesaw, Georgia.

Donations may be made in her name to Prairieton United Methodist Church, Prairieton, IN 47870.

Vivian Corrine Ford, 94, of Langsford Road, died Sunday afternoon at Harbor Point-Centerville, Cape Cod. She was born in Leominster, MA and attended schools in Quincy, MA. After moving to Providence, R.I., she met and married her husband George E. Ford in 1935. He died in October 2003.

For many years, she was a private secretary for Griggs & Browne Co. – Pest Control Operators in Worcester, MA. She also was accomplished in all forms of sewing, braiding, crocheting, and knitting.

She was a member of The Women’s Guild of St. Martha’s parish in Kennebunk.

Vivian is survived by:

MA.

Calling hours will be Thursday, June 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Martha’s Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Burial alongside her husband will follow in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Wanda P. Cannell Sr.

Wanda P. Cannell, Sr., 93, former resident of Coral Gables, FL and Kennebunkport, ME, passed away June 7, 2006 at home in South Berwick with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.
Wanda was born in Miami, FL on November 7, 1912, a daughter of the late William Edgar and Nelle Gayle Dawson.
Wanda grew up in the Miami and Coral Gables area of Florida. She graduated from Miami High School and the University of Miami.
She was a very well known “Blues” singer in many of the local nightclubs. She later traveled and was quite popular all over the United States. She sang with many different famous bands, including Guy Lombardo. In 1933, Wanda married Ennis T. Peterson, a piano player with his own band and she became his singer. They traveled and played in many nightclubs and theatres. Throughout her life, home was Coral Gables. She was co-founder of the Flamingo Club, a social group, and a very active member in the Cancer Society and the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Wanda was an avid bridge player. She always said that she would rather play bridge than eat or sleep. She often played at the Riviera and the Coral Gables Country Clubs where her family were members.
Wanda was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Ennis (Pete) Peterson and also their son, William Ennis Peterson at 16 years of age. She was also predeceased by her brother, Braden Forrest Dawson, Sr., as well as her parents. While attending the birth of her first grandchild in Kennebunk, Wanda met her future husband of 23 years, J. Elliot Cannell. The couple lived six months in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL and the remaining six months in Kennebunkport where they were members of the Kennebunkport Yacht Club and Wanda volunteered for many years at the Knott House. She also was an active member of the Senior Center at Lower Village in Kennebunk as well as the Fifty Plus Club in West Kennebunk. She belonged to many bridge groups.
Mr. Cannell passed away in 1991. Wanda moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda Jr. and Peter Cannell. The family moved to South Berwick where Wanda was a member of the South Berwick Senior Center.
Wanda will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Wanda, her husband Pete Cannell, and her daughter Pamela Elayne Peterson of CA. She will be missed very much by her grandchildren, George J. Seegel and wife Melissa, Wanda G. Cluff, William E. Seegel and wife Gretchen, Peter J. Cannell Jr., Christopher E. Seegel and wife Cecelia, as well as her eight great grandchildren.
Visiting Hours will be held from 1 to 2 PM on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME with a Funeral Service at 2PM with the Reverend Carolyn Lambert officiating.
Interment will be at her home cemetery in South Berwick immediately following the service.
If desired, donations may be made in Mrs. Cannell’s memory to Southern Maine Health and Homecare Services, P.O. Box 739, Kennebunk, ME 04043.
The family would like to express its deepest gratitude and thanks to Dr. Nathan Wilson, as well as the members of the SMHHS for the loving and professional care which they have provided to our mother for the last six years, namely Linda Sentner, R.N.; Stephanie DeFanti, R.N.; Deb Christian, Social Worker; and our wonderful Home Health Aides, Joanne Bond, Becky Seward, Rebecca Yoshida, Katrina Randall, Terri Blaisdell, and Bonnie Collins. Thank you so much.

There are no services locally. Burial will be in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.

William F. LaPointe died peacefully at home on Thursday, June 15, 2006 after a long and bravely fought battle with multiple chronic illnesses and complications resulting from exposure to Agent Orange. William was a disabled veteran.

Known to his friends and family as “Bill”, he was born on December 8, 1935 at Clinton Memorial Hospital, in Clinton, Massachusetts, the son of Volney and Mary (Garrity) LaPointe. Bill was their only child.

Born and raised in Clinton, Massachusetts, Bill graduated from Clinton High School in 1953. Following high school Bill pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduating from Indiana Polytechnic Institute in 1958,

Upon graduating from college, Bill volunteered for the service in the United States Army, and was assigned to the Chemical Corps. Bill began his service in the Army in October 1958. During his service he was stationed full time at Fort Detrick in Maryland. The duration of his service was spending working in a laboratory researching and developing chemical and biological weapons during the cold war era. Bill was honorably discharged from the United States Army in February of 1962.

He was employed by Vishay Sprague for 38 years and worked in various engineering positions. At the time of his retirement his position was International Liaison Engineering Manager for the Tantalum Division and he spent many years in the Middle East. He also founded and served as President of the Sprague Federal Credit Union for 30 plus years.

Bill remained active in the community for most of his life as time and necessity required. He had a long time involvement with the Boy Scouts of America. Bill himself was an Eagle Scout, and volunteered as a scout leader during his time in the Army in Maryland, and in Williamstown, Massachusetts as well as a short period in Kennebunk, Maine for a total of 25 plus years.

Bill also helped to organize and form the Kennebunk Youth Hockey Association and also served as Vice President and President of the Hockey Association for a short time.

Bill was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, camping and boating and bird watching. He enjoyed ocean cruises after retirement.

Bill was married to Florine Collaro in 1959, and they have spent the last 46 years together.

Besides leaving his wife Florine of Kennebunk, Bill also leaves his son Thomas LaPointe, daughter-in-law Jill LaPointe and granddaughter Susan LaPointe all of Rockport, Washington, as well as his son James LaPointe also of Kennebunk, Maine. Bill also leaves many relatives and friends who have been dear to him for years.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 PM only on Sunday, June 18, 2006 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 19th at 10 AM at St. Martha’s Catholic Church, Route 1, Kennebunk.

Burial with military honors will follow in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk.

William Francis Keith

William Francis Keith, 67, of Moody Beach and Spinnaker Ridge Drive, Wells, ME, formerly of Wilbraham, MA passed away on May 21st after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Newton MA on August 22, 1938, a son of the late Scott and Grace (Cunningham) Keith. Bill graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications, and he received his Master’s Degree in Business Management and Marketing at Western New England College, Springfield, MA. He served in the U.S. Army for three years.

Bill was employed for 22 years as Director of Marketing for Merriam-Webster. His next job was Director of the Master Degree Program at Nichols College, Dudley, MA. In his retirement years, when not fishing, he was the friendly “go to” man at LaValley Lumber in Wells.

Bill loved to spend time with his family and friends at his beach home. He was known along Moody Beach as an avid fisherman. Bill was a member of the Wells Congregational Church. He enjoyed woodworking, puttering around the yard, and painting.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Day Keith; two sons, David Scott Keith and his wife Jennifer of East Kingston, NH; Douglas Day Keith and his wife Kathy of North Andover, MA; five grandchildren: Brian, Kristina, Sarah, Julia and James; his brother, Alan Keith and his wife Traudel of MA; three sisters: Barbara Bailey of VT; Mari Keith of FL; and Diana Goodbread and her husband Len of NY, along with several nephews and nieces.

There are no calling hours.

A Celebration of Bill’s life will take place at the Wells Congregational Church, Route 1, Wells, ME on Tuesday, May 30th at 10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to: The David C. Fisher Lymphoma Fund, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to Dr. David C. Fisher and the staff at Dana Farber Cancer Institute for their professional care and treatment of Bill.

Woodbury G.G. "Woody" Stevens

Woodbury G.G. “Woody” Stevens, 80. of Maine Street, died Wednesday evening at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Westbrook, Maine on February 17, 1926, a son of Woodbury H. and Ruth E. (Emery) Stevens. He graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion, MA.

After graduation, Woody honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. Upon completion of his military service, he resumed his education and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Boston University in 1951. Woody then began a nearly 35 year career as an Insurance Manager with the Travelers Insurance Company in Boston, retiring in 1985.

On December 26, 1953, he married Beulah Mary Pitts in Kennebunkport. They were blessed with five children, three of which are triplets (Roxanne, Ross and Eric).

The Stevens’ enjoyed wintering in Lantana, FL for the past 25 years.

Woody was an avid golfer, and was a 60-year member of Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport, and also a member of the Lakeworth Golf Club in Florida. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox, and also enjoyed bicycling, gardening, and downhill skiing. He was a proud participant in the annual Memorial Day parade.

He was also a member of the Arundel Lodge of Masons, Scottish Rite Valley of Portland, and the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.

He was pre-deceased by his sister: Merilyn Palmer.

Alice C. West age 92 , a resident of Mayflower Place, Sanford formerly of Kennebunk died Tuesday. She was the widow of William G. West who died in 1988.
Mrs. West was born in Dorcester, MA on February 22. 1913 a daughter of Maurice and Sarah Howes Cousens. She attended West Kennebunk Schools.
She worked various of jobs such as the former Kesslen Shoe and the Hills News Agency both of Kennebunk. She was also an employee of General Electric Co. in Somersworth, NH for over thirty years. She lovingly volunteered at the Old Timers Shop in Sanford and the Southern Maine Agency of Aging for over twenty years.
She was a member and past matron of the Madonna Chapter of the Eastern Star of West Kennebunk. She painted for a hobby and also took great pleasure in playing Bingo.

She predeceased by her brothers, George and Thomas Cousens and her sister, Marion Cousens.

She is survived by her two sons Richard Bowley of Brookville, FL, and Robert Dennett of Annapolis, MD, one daughter, Nancy Bowley of Sanford, ME, 6 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Thursday, April 21 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 67 Summer Street Kennebunk. ME . The Madonna Chapter #144 O.E.S. will hold a service at 7:00 PM. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME.
