Donald A. Greene, age 63 of Wells, ME, passed away in his home on September 13, 2010. born in Lawrence, MA, Don attended Hampton Academy and graduated with a BA in Spanish from New England College. A restaurateur, Don left his mark on many a service establishment. A man of the people, Don loved good conversations, good drinks and friendly rounds of cribbage. Don was a down to earth man who took great pleasure in the simple things in life and strived to be a good person to all. Always ready with a story, he brought countless smiles to those around him. A beloved and ever-loving father, Don is survived by his children Max, Ben and Leora, his brother Robert and his mother Hilda. A private service was held for Don’s close friends and family in New Hampton, NH. Donations in his memory can be made to the the New Hampton School, 70 Main St., New Hampton, NH 03256.

Donald E. Connor

Donald Edward Connor, 71, of Ogunquit, Maine, formerly of Swampscott and Lynn, Massachusetts died peacefully in his sleep with his wife Arlene (Wrenn) of 52 years at his side.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on July 20, 1939, he was the son of Chester and Margaret (McCarriston) Connor. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Chester, Charles, and John. He leaves his sister and dear friend, Judith Fallon and her husband John of Westbrook, Maine.
Don leaves his daughters Colleen Jones of Newton, NH, Cori Connor-Morse and beloved son-in-law Steve Morse of Lynnfield, MA. He joins his daughter Caren Ann who predeceased him in 1987. He leaves three beautiful grandchildren, Erica Cutrona of Newport News, VA, Evan and Anna Jones of Newton, NH, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends and relations.
Don was a police officer for the Town of Swampscott until his retirement due to injuries sustained while on duty. He also worked as an auto mechanic throughout his life and was a driver for Sanborn’s Motor Express in Stoneham.
His passions included his devotion to his family and friends who counted on him for help and who were never disappointed by him. Since moving to Ogunquit in 2001, he was best known for his popcorn. He was the “Popcorn Man” and gave it away to all who came to his stand. He received donations for the Jimmy Fund and other cancer organizations throughout the years. He will be sorely missed by all of the children whose lives he touched and who looked forward to returning for vacations by the beach. He was an avid photographer. According to one of his dear friends, he never tired of doing good.
Visiting hours will be from 4-8 on Friday, October 8 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells, ME. In addition, the family will receive visitors at 12:30pm prior to the funeral Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in Swampscott, MA at 1 PM on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Interment will follow at Swampscott Cemetery. Donald Westcoat

Donald Westcoat, 56, of Kennebunk died on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

He was born on April 30, 1954, a son of Richard W. and Elaine (Benoit) Westcoat in Taunton, MA. Don was educated in Taunton schools. He had worked at Mabel's Lobster Claw Restaurant in Kennebunkport for the past several years.

He enjoyed cooking, catering, golf, and fishing.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Westcoat, Jr. of Kennebunk and his sister, Linda Martino of Mansfield, MA.

There are no services planned.

Dorothea E. Roberts

Dorothea was born May 19, 1926 in South Berwick, ME the daughter of George and Nellie (Lane) Watkins. She graduated from Berwick Academy, class of 1943. She married Arthur W. Roberts and together they had two sons. She worked for South Berwick Shoe, Flynn’s News, and the Berwick Post Office. As, a widowed, single parent, Dorothea also cleaned homes and baby sat for several families in the area, to help provide for her family.

She enjoyed crafts and knitting. She was an avid New England Sports fan, and also enjoyed going to the Marshwood High School football and basketball games with her sons. She volunteered a lot for the Women’s Auxiliary of the South Berwick Fire Department and was a member of Pocahontas.

Dorothea was predeceased by her husband, Arthur on Christmas Eve in 1963.

Dorothea is survived by her sons, Donald A. Roberts and his wife, Rachel and David P. Roberts and his wife, Dianne; 2 granddaughters, Elizabeth Roberts and Katherine Roberts Grosse and her husband, Glenn; 3 great grand children, Arthur James Grosse, Candice Grosse, and Amber Grosse; her cousins, Carol Watkins Paul and Delores Watkins Lothrop; and her dear friends, Anna White, Barbara Sterling, Priscilla Rogers, and Ronald Smalley.

Friends may call from 1-2 pm on Monday, April 12 at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick, ME, where a memorial service will be held at 2 pm. Interment will follow in Woodlawn cemetery in South Berwick. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Berwick Fire Department, 71 Norton Street, South Berwick, ME 03908.

Dorothy J. Matthews

Dorothy Matthews, 103 years, a lifelong resident of Berwick and Kittery, ME died Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Varney Crossing Nursing Center in North Berwick.

Dorothy was born in Berwick on November 14, 1906, the only child of James and Cora (Wallingford) Jellison. She attended schools in Berwick and graduated from Sullivan High School in 1922. She was also a graduate of Bryant Secretarial College in Providence, RI.

In 1924 she married her high school sweetheart, Roland Fred Matthews, who predeceased her in 1995.

She was an active member of the Berwick Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. After moving to Kittery in 1944, she became an active member of St. Marks Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Carolyn (Matthews) Morrison.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Brad Morrison of Kittery; four grandchildren Dean Morrison of Oakton, VA, Diane Cline of Pittsburg, PA, Sandy Collins of Kalamazoo, MI, Penny Draker of Kittery, ME; eight great-grandchildren Ashley, Tammy, Cara, Victoria, Brandon, Nicholas, Devon and Cassandra and four great-great-grandchildren Melany, Tia, Jace and Luke.

There are no calling hours. A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 1PM at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick with Pastor William Humphrey officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery in Berwick.

Kennebunk- Dorothy K. Simpson, 79 years, of Brown Street died October 4, 2010 at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.

Dorothy was born May 27, 1931 in Rochester, NH a daughter of Winslow and Violet (Bradley) Kent. She was a hard worker and in addition to being a homemaker for many years, she also worked at Kesslen Shoe and Morningstar (Corning). She married Robert I. Simpson, Sr. on Thanksgiving Day in 1968.

Dorothy loved her family and animals. She especially loved keeping up with the news of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed puzzles and bird watching. There was a special spot in her heart for her albino bunny, Fat Frank.

She was predeceased by her two brothers, Frank Kent and Russell Kent and two grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Bob Simpson, Sr.; her three sons, Kent W. Taylor of Bossier City, LA, Robert I. Simpson, Jr. of Kennebunk, and David Simpson of Limington, ME; her two daughters, Paula Perry of East Providence, RI and Katheleen Parks of Kennebunk; eleven grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

A memorial service for Dorothy will be held at 10am on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Kennebunk Baptist Church, Route 1, Kennebunk. Interment will follow in Hope cemetery in Kennebunk.

Dr. Peter Morgane

Peter J. Morgane, Neuroscientist and Neuropharmacologist, died on Monday, September 27, 2010 at Southern Maine Medical Center following a short illness. Dr. Morgane has been a resident of Kennebunkport since 1980. He was predeceased by his wife, Cécile Murette Morgane, who died in 2001. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and spent numerous early years in New Orleans. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Tulane University in New Orleans. Dr. Morgane served as a page in the United States Senate in 1943 and 1944. He served in the U.S. Army in 1947-1948 at Fort Hood and Camp Moxey, Texas. He did his graduate studies at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, receiving both his Masters degree and Ph.D. in Neurophysiology.

He did post-graduate work at the University of Oregon in Portland, Oregon and the Brain Research Institute in Mexico City, working at the latter with the famous sleep researcher, Dr. Raul Hernandez Peon. He then did research with Dr. John Lilly on aspects of whale brain anatomy, carrying out most of these studies with Dr. Paul Yakovlev at the Department of Neuropathology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Dr. Morgane moved to Worcester MA in 1968 as head of the sleep research laboratories at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Shrewsbury MA. There he was director of the Training Program for Neurobiology from 1970-1975. He also began work on a Program Project dealing with effects of prenatal protein malnutrition on the developing brain, which he worked on until the time of his passing. That program moved to Boston University Medical School in 1987 and was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and National Institutes of Health. At Boston University he was a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry. At the same time he was Professor of Pharmacology at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.

In his scientific career Dr. Morgane published over 230 scientific papers and edited the four volume Handbook of the Hypothalamus. He was a member of 16 scientific societies. He served for 11 years on grant reviews at the National Science Foundation and at the National Institutes of Health for over 35 years. Dr. Morgane’s studies on whale brains were published in several monographs and some 40 scientific papers. These studies form the definitive works on whale brain: both large and small (dolphins, porpoises and whales). At the University of New England, Dr. Morgane worked with Dr. David Mokler on the emotional brain (limbic system) and they edited an entire volume of the Journal of Neuroscience and Bio-Behavioral Reviews. He became Professor Emeritus in June 2010.

In recent years Dr. Morgane has given considerable support to the University of New England. He has funded the Cécile Morgane Research Laboratory, as well as the Peter and Cécile Morgane Building. This has created considerable laboratory research space and offices and laboratories for the Arts and Sciences Faculty.

Dr. Morgane’s principal endeavors outside of science included book collecting, antique gathering, champagne tasting and world-wide travel to over 45 countries, including Japan, India, Australia, East Africa, Israel and all of the countries of Europe. He and his wife, Cécile, who was born in France, particularly loved going to France to sample the great beauty of the country, as well as the wine and food. He died as a member of the Roman Catholic Church.

There are no immediate surviving relatives.

Calling hours will be on Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10AM at Holy Spirit Parish/St. Martha’s Church, Route One, Kennebunk. Interment will be next to his wife, Cécile, in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Dr. Robert P. Hatch, M.D.

Robert Phillips Hatch, M.D., age 83, retired Obstetrician Gynecologist, died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME on Monday, December 8, 2009, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 1, 1926, in Woodstock, Connecticut, to the late Rev. David and Helen Hatch.

He attended public schools in Dover, New Hampshire and Fairfield, Connecticut and graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 1944. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, training as a B-29 Remote Control Turret Mechanic Gunner, and was stationed at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Mississippi, Lowry AFB, Denver, Colorado, and at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada. He received his B.A. from Amherst College in 1950, and his M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine in 1954. While at Yale he was united in marriage to Karolin M. Kihlander, on September 13, 1952 at the Westville, Connecticut Congregational Church.

After receiving his commission in the United States Army Medical Corps in 1954, he served a one year Rotating Internship and a three year Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center,
Washington, D.C. During that period he attended a six month course at the Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He then served a tour of duty at the 2 General Hospital, Landstuhl, Germany from January, 1959 through June, 1962, serving for a period as acting Chief, OB/GYN Service. While at Landstuhl, he supervised the training of German interns and residents, participated in field exercises and the training of a field surgical unit. In July, 1962, he received a certificate of achievement and honorable discharge from the United States Regular Army with the rank of Major.

Dr. Hatch was certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology; he was a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists, various State and Local Medical Societies, and Associations. While in the Army Medical Corps, he was a member of the American Medical Society of Vienna, Austria, and the Association of Military Surgeons.

In July, 1962 Robert, Karolin and their four children moved to Robert’s childhood home, Dover, New Hampshire. There, as the first such specialist in town, he started a solo OB/GYN practice. Licensed to practice in New Hampshire and Maine, he was a member of the Wentworth Douglass Medical Staff, Dover, N.H. and a consulting member of the Frisbie Memorial Hospital Medical Staff, Rochester, N.H. He held various staff positions, including a term as Chief of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Service, Wentworth Douglass Hospital.

Over the years, he was joined by associates including Dr. William E. Cusack, Dr. Guy C. Marshall, Dr. John B. Gillespie, and Dr. Robert Leipold, as well as nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, and a nutritionist. Robert was President of the group that incorporated as the Garrison Medical Professional Association. He and his associates created the Dover Prenatal Clinic, an effort that was largely spearheaded by Dr. Guy Marshall. The practice was the first in New Hampshire to employ nurse midwives, Judith Edwards, R.N., C.N.M, being the pioneer.

His forward-looking associates encouraged natural childbirth, childbirth education, Lamaze Training, and broke new ground by having husbands present and participating in the delivery room. The practice was the first in New Hampshire to utilize in-office fetal ultrasound, and instituted fetal monitoring on the Obstetrical Service. The practice introduced infertility surgery, culdoscopy and then laparoscopy to the Gynecology Service, as well as microsurgical gynecological techniques. During his professional career, he performed or supervised the delivery of approximately 5,000 babies. Dr. Hatch’s private practice spanned from 1962 until 1984 when he retired because of hypertrophic arthritis and spinal stenosis.

Robert, Karolin, and their children were past members of the First Parish Church, Congregational, Dover, NH., where he served a term as Deacon. He served several years as the Dover Pee Wee Football Physician. While residing in Alfred, Maine he served for a time as Town Health Officer and member of the Budget Committee. As Secretary, Alfred Comprehensive Planning Committee, he wrote the major part of the Alfred Comprehensive plan that was adopted in 1990. He was a one time delegate to the State Republican Convention. For sixteen years, he was a volunteer weather observer for Joe Cupo, Channel 6, WCSH TV.

Recently, he wrote a 260 page illustrated Fiftieth Reunion Album for the Yale University School of Medicine Reunion, Class of 1954.

After the death of his wife Karolin in 1992, he married Mary Louise Breckenridge Oaks, on October 4, 1996. Mary is the widow of Dr. Donald Oaks of Dover. Robert and Mary designed their retirement home in Kennebunk, Maine where they enjoyed their comfortable home, visits from family members and friends, the friendship of good neighbors, gardening, landscaping, snow removal, and traveling together - a highlight being three weeks in Germany and Switzerland in 1991.

Robert’s interests included family-oriented activities, gardening, orchard care, farm animals, wood lot management, energy conservation, building design and construction, fishing and hunting. A sports enthusiast, he was a fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, and the New England Patriots. With the help of Karolin and their children, he constructed a camp on Moosehead Lake in 1972. The camp became a four season family retreat that generated a lifetime of memories. Robert’s other interests were his personal library, reading, especially history and biography, classical music, computer and internet, photography, meteorology, family history and genealogy. His last days were devoted to writing down memories for his children.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter and her husband, Louise and William J. Belanger, Jr., Alfred, ME, his son and his wife Douglas and Anita, Maryville, TN; his son David, Tok, AK; his daughter Susan, widow of Alan Dupuis, Waterboro, ME; eight grandchildren, Kristine (Donald) Candage, Alfred, ME; William Belanger, New Durham, NH, Leanne, Alfred, ME, Jennifer and Megan Dupuis, Waterboro, ME, Adam, Emily, and Carter Hatch, Maryville, TN, and one sister, Sylvia (Mealand), Cornwall, PA. He is further survived by nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John, one sister, Dorothy (Davis), and an infant brother, David.

Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, Maine. A Memorial Service for Dr. Hatch will be held on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church, 6 Dane Street, Kennebunk, ME. The Rev. Stephen L. Hastings will officiate. A Graveside service will be held for family and local friends at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 14, 2009 at Riverdale Cemetery, Danbury, NH, after which the family and friends will gather for a buffet luncheon at the Inn At Danbury, 67 Route 104.

Edna M. MacGregor, beloved daughter of Arthur and Eva Tardiff, 90 years, of Kennebunk, ME died at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME on June 15, 2010. Edna was a resident at Atria Assisted Living for the past five years.

Edna graduated from Jamaica Plains High School and lived in Dedham, MA and Wells, ME at a summer home her parents built.

Edna worked as a secretary for Union Carbide, Monson Chemicals and Firestone. She retired in 1982. Edna enjoyed the home at Wells Beach and spent much of her time renting to returning vacationers, many of them becoming good friends. She received much joy from their sharing the place she loved the best.

Edna was a hands on, do it yourself woman and could fix most things herself. Animals brought great joy to her life. Edna loved live and lived it with the biggest smile that would radiate love and acceptance to all, even to the end of her life.

Survivors include a sister Rita Timmerman of Dedham, MA; a niece Janet LePore of Taunton, MA and a nephew Joseph Timmerman of Ossipee, NH; a very special great niece Leigh Prince and family and several great and great-great nieces and nephews and special friends Dan and Becky Wirtes.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 20, 2010 from 2-4PM at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, June 21, 2010 at 11AM at Holy Spirit Parish, St. Martha's Church, Kennebunk.
