John Randolph Foster
September 25, 2010
Dover, NH

Berwick - John Randolph Foster, 83, beloved father, grandfather and coach to many, died Saturday night, September 25, 2010 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover following a period of declining health. He was born in Portland, ME on March 14, 1927, the youngest of three sons born to Philip Clement and Della Olivia (Worster) Foster. He grew up in the Portland area until moving with his family to Massachusetts, where he attended Boston Latin school. In his sophomore year, the family moved back to Maine, settling in Eliot. John attended Portsmouth High School; it was not unusual for him to walk back and forth to school every day. During his senior year, his football coach gave him a Ford Model A which he thereafter drove to school on a daily basis.

Near the end of his senior year, John left school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed aboard USS Power (DD-839) and was aboard USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese surrender signing that heralded the end of World War II. He then spent the remainder of his enlistment in Italy.

After his discharge from active duty, he returned to the Portsmouth area and, on Christmas Day, 1947, married Georgine Benjamin at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Having finished High School while on active duty, John enrolled at the University of New Hampshire. He was 3 credits short of earning his Bachelor’s Degree when he was forced to withdraw in order to support his family. He went to work for the Badger Farm Creamery, where he started in delivery and advanced to Superintendent of the Ice Cream department. After accepting a position with the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, he then worked as a driver for the Cameron Sod Company. It was during this period that he was offered a part time substitute teaching position, working in Barrington, Strafford and Berwick. In 1966, he became a permanent substitute at the former Berwick High School (now Noble High School). This, after returning to college (Boston University) to earn his teaching credentials, all the while still working, and supporting his wife and 6 children. John taught for 26 years at the junior- and senior high levels in math and science. He was assistant football coach in the late 60’s and was Head Football Coach from 1969 to 1978. In 1989, John instituted the “Wall of Fame” at Noble High School, which honors past graduates, and now honors all Noble graduates who served in the military. He retired in 1991 and took care of his beloved wife Georgine until her death in January of 1992. In his retirement, he was a regular platelet donor at the Dana Farber Cancer Center where he was named Volunteer of the Year. He also worked as a desk clerk at the Anchorage, where he amassed nearly 25 years of service. Never straying far from students, he also coached Track at Noble and Football at Wells High School.

John was a gentleman farmer. From livestock to dairy to produce, everything on the family table was from his farm. He loved his cows, but was probably best known for his turkeys and pigs! He also enjoyed fly fishing, hunting and, of course, football.

In addition to his loving wife, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Gale in 1991 and Philip in 2007.

Survivors include his six children, Nicola Martin of Dover, Patrice Abbott and her husband Scott of Berwick, Jonatha and her husband Rich of St. Cloud, FL, Andrea and her husband Ron of Corona, CA, Jay and his wife Dorry of Volant, PA, Pete and his wife Jane of Berwick; 10 grandchildren: Andrea, David, Kristen, Tim, Erica, Zach, Thom, Brogan, C.J., and Cahrianna; 4 great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Maddie, Landon and Paxton; along with several nieces and nephews.

Memorial visitation will be on Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Laing-Bibber Funeral Chapel, 36 Rochester Street, Berwick. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Christian Church, 129 Lower Main Street, North Berwick. Interment with military honors will be in Newington Cemetery, Newington, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to: Noble Athletic Activity Fee Account, 388 Somersworth Road, North Berwick, ME 03906.
