Mary (Marie) Arvill Soule McConnell
February 16, 2010
Kennebunk Beach, Maine

Mary (Marie) Arvill Soule McConnell, 97 years, of Seal Rock Health Care at Atlantic Heights, Saco and Kennebunk Beach, ME died on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Seal Rock Health Care Facility.

Mrs. McConnell was born in Buxton, ME on August 21, 1912, the daughter of Harry Marshall Soule, and Margaret Elizabeth Flavin.

She was raised in Buxton and Rangeley where her father was the engineer for the power dam at Kennebago that supplied electricity for Oquossic and Rangeley. Her copy of the book “Kennebago Summer” by Leroy Niles mentions her brother and father, with many memories of the area’s excellent fishing, Grant’s Camps, The Logans, & Kennebago Mountain.

She was very proud of the fact that she graduated in the Class of 1932 from Gould Academy, and the next year from the Portland Business School.

Moving to Kennebunk after Business school, she met and married Gerald E. McConnell and she lived the rest of her life in Kennebunk.

Mrs. McConnell was a member of Christ Church, a life member and past Matron of the Madonna Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member during the early years of the Senior Center at Lower Village and for many years her social life revolved around her Sandpipers Club.

Marie was known throughout the Kennebunk area in the years past for owning and operating several restaurants, for over 30 years, including “The Lobster Roll” takeout on Route 9, “Marie’s Chat ‘n Chew”, and the “Sea Gull Restaurant” in Kennebunkport. Also, later she helped her husband in the Whitecap Realty Office in Kennebunkport.

Mrs. McConnell was interested in the education of the students of the Kennebunks, being one of the first mentors for the Cooperative Education program at Kennebunk High School. Many of those former students later worked for her, or went into business for themselves.

As a past resident of Huntington Common she loved the visits of the Leadership in Action students from the high school and passed on her own business advice of always working hard, be positive and sincere.

She was extremely proud her son had been Headmaster of Kennebunk High School. She often spoke of the important things in her long life and what made her happy. She was grateful for her friends, Bradbury’s Market in Cape Porpoise and Meserve’s Market in Lower Village and their employees who made endless deliveries, and John Goddard, Coastal Taxi Service, her dining at Tophers’ Restaurant, and dancing wherever “Straight Lace” was playing. She hosted many special events at her Kennebunk Beach home and loved a good game of cribbage, a good joke and her cats Fred and Sam.

Daily interaction with friends gave her much satisfaction and pleasure. She was proud of the fact that for many years she had been a companion-housekeeper to Mr. & Mrs. Bartan Kramer in Kennebunkport.

She took a great interest in her family, especially the grandchildren & great-grandchildren. “Nana” was on the phone always wanting to know how they were doing & what they were doing. There were always plenty of goodies and an open invitation even to their friends. Her specialty was lobster rolls and applesauce cake at all the restaurants.

She was able to attend all the important events in her families’ lives until recently. Her presence was always utmost to the success of the occasion. Needless to say she was given unconditional love and care from all her family.

Mrs. McConnell was predeceased by her husband, Gerald E. McConnell, her twin brother, Harry Marshall Soule, Jr., and his wife, Evelyn (Butterfield) Soule; her sisters, Ruth Walton St. Clair, and Dorothy Walton Smith; and her life-long friend, Hilda O. Talbot who passed away in 2007.

She loved and admired her physician Dr. Arthur Scott, Jr., his wife Marjorie, and their family, and the caring nursing staff at Seal Rock Health Care at Atlantic Heights in Saco, and Huntington Common of Kennebunk.

Mrs. McConnell is survived by her son, David Marshall McConnell and his wife Carolyn Boothby McConnell of Kennebunk Beach; grandchildren James E. McConnell and his wife Sheilah of Avon, CT; First Sgt. Mark D. McConnell, USMC (ret) and his wife Amalia of Richmond, ME; Sharon L. McConnell of Como, MS; Brian S. McConnell and his wife Tracy of East Granby, CT; great grandchildren Keith J. McConnell of Avon, CT, Gavin S. McConnell and Maeve L. McConnell, both of East Granby, CT.

Calling hours will be Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer Street, Kennebunk, where a Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, April 26, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Janet Leighninger officiating.
