Robert Moshimer
September 07, 2010
Kennebunkport

Robert Moshimer, 92, of Kennebunkport, died on September 7, 2010 at St. Andre Health Care Facility in Biddeford.

Known as Bob to most everyone, he was born in Portland on September 1, 1918, to Clarence Henry and Sarah Ethel Moshimer. He was raised in the Libbytown neighborhood and graduated from Deering High School in 1936.

The course of his life, like so many of his generation, was profoundly affected by World War II. Bob entered the Army in September, 1942, and was sent to the Pacific with the 43rd Infantry Division. He was aboard the "President Coolidge", an American troop ship, when it hit an American mine and sank at Espiritu Santo. He received the Soldier's Medal for his heroic efforts to save the Captain of the ship. Later in the war, he was sent to New Zealand for medical treatment, and there he met and married Joan Leith of Auckland, New Zealand. They were separated when Bob returned to action, and didn't see each other again until after his discharge when she boarded a ship filled with other war brides and met him in San Francisco.

Bob cherished his war experiences and the friends he made, and especially loved New Zealand, to which he and Joan traveled a number of times. After the war, Bob and Joan lived in Lewiston, Brewer and Portland. In 1968 they bought W. Cushing & Company, a dye and hooked rug business started in Dover-Foxcroft and moved it to their home in Kennebunkport. They ran it together for the rest of their lives.

Joan died in 2000. Bob is survived by his son, Paul Moshimer of Kennebunk, his daughter Jean Deupree of Portland; his grandchildren Elsie and Rose Moshimer, and Lily Deupree Newton; and his great-grandson, Oliver Robert Newton.

The family would like to thank Dr. Earl Freeman of Kennebunkport and Kennebunkport town nurse, Judy Barrett, whose efforts allowed Bob to live at home for several years while ill; and the staff at St. Andre Health Care Facility who cared for him lovingly for 18 months.

He requested that there be no formal services.
