Joseph W. Kane

Joseph W. Kane, 60, of Yorke Ridge Way, York, died unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001 at York Hospital.

He was born July 21, 1941, in Philadelphia, the son of Joseph T.W. and Jean (Brown) Kane. He was a 1959 graduate of New London (Conn.) High School and a 1963 graduate of the University of Connecticut, receiving a bachelor's degree in government.

Mr. Kane was a longtime employee of Curtis 1000 Company serving the Maine territory. He later owned and operated Sebasco Paper and Envelope Company in Melrose, Mass., retiring in 1990.

He served on various York boards and was a past treasurer of the York Art Association and chairman of the York Republican Town Committee. He also served as a mentor in the York Schools. Joe enjoyed fishing and hunting and contributed many hours to wildlife conservation. He was a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited.

He also had a residence in Cundy's Harbor in Harpswell for the past 22 years and had formerly lived in Framingham, Mass., moving to York in 1990.

He was predeceased by a brother, Leslie Kane, who died in 1998.

Survivors include his parents of Waterford, Conn.; his wife, Laurie Uff of York; two sons, Michael David Kane and his wife Michelle of Gray, and James Joseph Kane and his wife, JoEllen of Melbourne, Fla.; one daughter, Lee Ann German of Moodus, Conn.; six grandchildren, Robert and Daniel German of Moodus, Matthew and Joshua Kane of Gray, and Zachary and Rachel Kane of Melbourne.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, with a prayer service by the Rev. Paige Blair at 6 p.m. Burial will be in the First Parish Cemetery. Flowers are welcome, or memorial donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited, 1 Waterfowl Way, Memphis, TN 38120.

Joan Trapp Wiese

Joan Trapp Wiese, known to family and friends as Jakki, died at her home in York Harbor, Maine on Oct. 17, 2001. She was 74.

Born and raised in Laconia, she attended local schools and received her bachelor's degree in journalism from Simmons College in Boston in 1948. She was secretary to the president of MIT until she left the United States in the fall of that year and traveled to Norway to visit friends. She went to work for the American Embassy in Oslo and it was in Norway that she met her husband-to-be, Claus Wiese, whom she married in 1950.

The couple returned to this country in 1951, settling in the Boston area where Mrs. Wiese worked as an assistant to cartoonist Al Capp. After living in the Boston area for several years, they moved to Poland Spring where she was "Joan Knight", the late night weather forecaster for WMTW TV.

The Wieses were a skiing family and traveled every weekend to ski at the newly opened Sunday River. In 1961, the couple moved their young family to Bethel where they owned and operated the Norseman Inn for 25 years.

Mrs. Wiese had a love for learning and in her early 50s she returned to school at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she earned her master's degree and began work on her doctorate in behavioral science. She practiced counseling in the Bethel area.

In later years, she had moved to the Maine/New Hampshire Seacoast area in order to be closer to her family. She was an active volunteer in several community programs until her health forced her to retire.

She leaves three children, Pipp Wiese of Lancaster, N.H., Kristin Wiese-Adelman of Rollinsford, N.H., Peter Wiese of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia Rice of Boylston, Mass. and Constance MacCrate of Plandome, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren whom she adored and they adored her. They are Brett Saunders; Tucker, Zoe, Satchel and Deker Adelman; and Zachary and Morgan Wiese.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on what would have been her 75th birthday, Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 at the Community Church in Durham from 1 to 5 p.m.

Mrs. Wiese gave to numerous charities, and the family would request that anyone wishing to do so make a donation to their favorite charity in her name.

Frank Edward Kovacs

Frank Edward Kovacs, 59, of Peter Weare Road, York, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at York Hospital.

He was born in Everett, Mass., Sept. 25, 1942, son of Frank and Louise Gertrude (Lyman) Kovacs and graduated from Everett Vocational School.

Mr. Kovacs served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict.

He was a rigger in shop No. 72 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 36 years, retiring in 1999. As a rigger, he especially enjoyed working on the USS Constitution, docked in Boston.

He moved from Everett to York in 1976. Mr. Kovacs was a member of the York Elks, a life member of the Veteran of Foreign Affairs of Norfolk, Va., and the Portsmouth (N.H.) Moose Club. He enjoyed working around his house and spending time with his family and especially with his granddaughter, Jordan.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra A. (Grover) Kovacs of York; two sons, Michael J. and his wife, Kristen Kovacs of Waterford, Conn., and Nicholas Kovacs of York; two sisters, Maureen A. Thibodeau of Lynn, Mass., and Barbara R. Kovacs of Saugus, Mass.; a granddaughter, Jordan M. Kovacs of Waterford, Conn.

Graveside services were held Tuesday in the First Parish Cemetery, York.

Helga C. Oian

Helga C. Oian, 86, formerly of Freeman Street, York Beach, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the Harbor Home.

She was born June 28, 1915, in Vardo, Norway, the daughter of Anders and Birgitte Mathiesen and attended schools in Norway.

Mrs. Oian had formerly lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., moving to York Beach in 1966. She had been employed at the University of New Hampshire Dining Hall for 16 years.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Newington, N.H., and was a member of the Sons of Norway. Mrs. Oian was an avid skier and hiker and while in her late 60s spent two weeks hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Her husband, Morten Oian, died March 20, 1973.

Survivors include one son, Magne-Roar "Mike" Oian of Rye, N.H.; three daughters, Brit Dean of Chesterfield, N.H. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Kari Fernald of York Beach, and Tove Webber of Cape Neddick; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and many family members in Norway.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in the Union Congregational Church of York Beach on Church Street. Interment will be private. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

James M. Roux

James M. Roux, 42, of Portland, Maine, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. He was a passenger on the hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 that crashed in New York City.

Jim was the son of the late Donald A. Roux of Cumberland Foreside, Maine. He was a 1977 graduate of Lewiston High School, a 1981 graduate of Bowdoin College and a 1984 graduate of University of Maine Law School. Roux served three years in the United States Army as a captain in the JAG Corp for the 82nd Airborne Division and was a decorated paratrooper. He also served in the Army National Reserves.

Jim practiced law in Hartford, Conn., and Portland. He was a litigator who recently helped with large settlements for several families affected by asbestos exposure and lead poisoning.

A devoted father to his two sons, Jim was an avid fly fisherman, mountain climber and outdoorsman. On his numerous trips to Nepal, he hiked the Himalayas, ascended to the base camp of Mt. Everest, and climbed Island Peak. He loved to hike and rock climb in the White Mountains of N.H. Jim was also an accomplished guitarist with a passion for music.

Mr. Roux is survived by two sons, James Michael Roux Jr., and Patrick Kelly Roux. Also surviving is his mother, Constance Roux Scalera and stepfather Frank J. Scalera, Jr., of Cumberland Foreside; a brother, David Roux of Woodside, Calif.; and four sisters, Donna Hart of Brisbane, Calif., Catherine Moin of Washington, D.C., Sally Tarte of Kennebunk, Maine, and Mary Train of Portland. He leaves behind a stepbrother, William Scalera; and two stepsisters, Deborah Martin and Barbara Pepper, all three from Pittsburgh. He was the nephew of the late Gov. James B. Longley.

A private memorial service is planned at Bowdoin College Chapel at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 15. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to Educate the Children, Inc., a nonprofit group that provides funds for educating the children of Nepal: Educate the Children, Inc., P.O. Box 414, Ithaca, NY 14851, www.etc-nepal.org.

Georgette Leone Rioux

Georgette Leone Rioux, 88 of the Baran Place, Beech Road, Eliot, Maine, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at York Hospital after a short illness.

She was born in Salem, Mass., June 28, 1913, the daughter of Polycarpe and Marie Louise (Morin) Tremblay.

Mrs. Rioux worked for many years as a shoe stitcher in Salem, retiring in the early 1960s. She had lived in Salem her whole life until six years ago when she moved to Eliot to be closer to her daughter.

She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed playing the organ at recitals. While in her 20s, she played the organ for radio station WESX in Salem.

Her family was the major focus of her life, and she was a beloved and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Rioux was predeceased by her husband, Paul Emile Rioux, who died in 1982.

She is survived by her daughter, Andrea L. Rioux of Cape Neddick, Maine; her brother, Conrad Tremblay of Idaho; her sister, Yvette Plummer of Long Branch, N.J.; two grandchildren, Kim Wynne of Wells, Maine, and Gregory D. Wadland of Nashua, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Wynne of Wells, Lukas Wadland of Nashua; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were held Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road., York. Interment was in Puritan Lawn Cemetery, Peabody, Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04330.

Sandra Lea Wykes

Sandra Lea Wykes, 46, of Payneton Hill Road, York, Maine, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at York Hospital after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 17, 1954, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, daughter of Gerald W. and Gwyneth C. (Meredith)Wykes.

She was a hospital administrator in the accounting division of Humana Corporation, a private hospital in Chicago. For six years she was the accounting supervisor.

Miss Wykes had lived in both Chicago and York before moving back to York to be with her parents because of her illness.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed painting with water and oils the colors and beauty of flowers and gardens. She loved dogs and especially her own golden retriever, 'Goldie'.

She is survived by her parents of York; her maternal grandfather, William F. Meredith of Burlington, Ont., Canada; a sister, Kimberley Anne and her husband, Glen Imonetti, of York; a nephew, Shane G. Imonetti of York; a niece, Ashley Gwyneth Imonetti of York.

Private services will be held. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

JoAnn Bosteels

JoAnn Bosteels, 44, of Groundnut Hill Road, Cape Neddick, Maine, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at York Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born July 18, 1957, in Winchester, Mass., daughter of Milton B. and Theresa A. (Gosselin) Tompkins and was a 1976 graduate of Reading (Mass.) High School.

After moving here 12 years ago, she worked as a bank teller for the former Maine National Bank in York, Maine. JoAnn then worked as a bank teller at Maine Bank and Trust in the village until about one year ago when she became a medical secretary for Dr. Mark P. Cartier at York Family Practice in York.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church. JoAnn was a devoted mother to her three daughters, taking them to all types of sporting events and activities. She enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and walking. She had participated in many Breast Cancer Awareness Walking Marathons. Most of all, she loved meeting and being with people.

Survivors include her parents, Milton and Theresa Tompkins of New Port Richey, Fla.; three daughters, Melissa A. Bosteels, Kristin L. Bosteels and Elizabeth A. Bosteels, all of Cape Neddick; a brother, William H. and his wife, Megan Tompkins of Croton On Hudson, N.Y.; a sister: Diane and her husband, Gary Ring of Peabody, Mass.; close friend Joe O'Brien of Cape Neddick; three nieces, three nephews and many cousins.

A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

In loving memory of JoAnn and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bosteels Children Educational Fund, c/o ME Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 38, York, ME 03909.

Joyce Ann Sadowski

Joyce A. Sadowski, 69, of Yorke Ridge Way, York, Maine, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, at her residence.

She was born in Northampton, Mass., May 15, 1932, the daughter of Joseph F. and Anna M. (Probulis) Cadette. She was a graduate of Northampton High School and attended the University of Maryland.

Mrs. Sadowski was a secretary for the University of Mass., in Amherst for five years. For two years she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., as a secretary in the division now known as NASA.

She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Northampton and St. Christopher Church in York. Mrs. Sadowski was past president of the Northampton Jacee-ettes, an avid reader and flower arranger. She loved to travel and was proud of the fact that she had visited all 50 states as well as many countries abroad.

Mrs. Sadowski was a devoted mother and loved her family dearly.

Survivors include her husband, John R. Sadowski of York; a daughter, Lynn E. Sadowski of Charlestown, Mass.; a brother, Donald Cadette of North Hollywood, Calif.

A Mass of Christian burial was Friday, in St. Christopher Church, York, with Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York.

Eleanor Mae Perkins

Eleanor Mae Perkins, 74, of Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, died Monday, August 27, 2001, at York Hospital.

She was born in York, the daughter of Jeremiah and Marjorie Hilton Lewis. She attended York schools.

Mrs. Perkins worked in the hotel business for 15 years as head housekeeper at Meadowbrook Inn. She was a former member of Richmond Baptist Church, Richmond, a member and past Master for many years at the Kittery Grange, a member of the Maine State Grange, and national Grange. She also enjoyed sewing and traveling.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Perkins, in 1984, and by three brothers: Hurley Lewis, Hartley Lewis, and Ellsworth Lewis.

She leaves two sons, Earle Hutchins and William Hutchins, both of Cape Neddick; a daughter, Faye Johnson of Berwick; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service was held on Aug. 30, at the First Parish Cemetery, York. The Rev. Judson Stone of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church officiated. In attendance were her loving family members. Bearers were her beloved grandsons, David Johnson, Clint Hutchins, Matthew Hutchins and her beloved nephew Jeremiah Lewis. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice of York, 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909, or to York Volunteer Ambulance Association, York, ME 03909. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wilson Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery, Maine.

Ronald E. Guimond

Ronald E. Guimond, 61, of Fort Hill Ave., York Beach, died Saturday, August 25, 2001, at York Hospital.

Born on August 26, 1939 in Nashua, N.H., he was a son of Donald E. and Agnes (Beaudin) Guimond.

Before his retirement in 1999, he was employed by Tyco Industries. He had been a general manager and vice president of several divisions over the years both in the United States and overseas. A very accomplished man in his field, he held several patents in the area of chemistry as it applies to planting applications and in the aviation field for high tech antennas for aircraft. He saw the company through several owners from his beginning with Adams Russell until its sale to Tyco Industries.

He and his wife lived in Amesbury, Mass., for many years and summered in York Beach until his retirement, when they moved to York Beach year round.

He is survived by his loving wife, Billie Guimond of York Beach; daughters Jamie Charlier and her spouse John Archambeault of York, Maine, and Holly Guimond of Rockport, Mass.; a son, Kirk Guimond and his spouse Deborah of Plaistow, N.H.; three grandchildren, Matthew and Patrick Guimond and Jacob Smith; a sister, Bernadette Tremblay and her spouse, Wayne, of Mont Vernon, N.H.; two brothers, Ralph Guimond and his spouse, Sue, of Nashua, N.H., and Richard and his spouse, Lisa, of Milford, N.H.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Sept. 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Christopher Church in York. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Lung Cancer research division of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 44 Binney St., Boston, MA 02115. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road/US Route 1 By-Pass, Kittery, Maine 03904.

Robert Benoit

Robert Benoit, 73, of Kittery, formerly of Bedford, Mass. and York, died peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at his home.

Born in Somerville, Mass., Aug. 10, 1928, he was the son of the late Donat and Eva (Marcuox) Benoit. He was a 34-year resident of Bedford before retiring to York, and recently to his current home in Kittery.

He was raised in Medford, Mass. He graduated from Suffolk University with a degree in journalism. In 1952 he worked as a beat reporter for the Fall River (Mass.) Herald News. He then became the second editor for the Bedford Times in Bedford, Mass., succeeding Anthony Spinazzola who went on to work for the Boston Globe. The Times was absorbed by Minuteman Publications, which became a chain of eight daily newspapers. He became co-owner and executive editor before retiring in 1978.

He was very active in local government and served on the Board of Selectmen in Bedford from 1966 to 1968. He was an active member of the Rotary Club in York. He was also an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was the husband of the late Barbara (Venuti) Benoit. He was the father of Donald Benoit of Dorchester, Mass., Paul Benoit of Wilmington, Mass., and Michelle Blaisdell of Hampton Falls, N.H.; brother of Lucille Bolton of Derry, N.H.; grandfather of Allie and Zachary Blaisdell.

A funeral will be held from the Bedford (Mass.) Funeral Home, Wednesday, 8 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Michael's Church at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford, Mass.
