Cathryn H. Porter

Cathryn H. Porter, 79, of Marginal Avenue, Ogunquit, died unexpectedly Thursday, August 30, 2001, at York Hospital.

She was born in Wells on Sept. 24, 1921, the daughter of Ray P. and Cora M. (Perkins) Hanscom and graduated from Wells High School. She graduated from the Boston Beauty Academy and had worked at many beauty salons.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of York-Ogunquit and enjoyed making quilts for York Hospital. She and her husband, Walter, enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Silhouette Squares of Berwick.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter, who died May 8, 1992, and by her sister, Carolyn Davis, who died May 8, 1975.

She is survived by three nieces, Andrea Everitt of Virginia Beach, Va., Sharon Kalinowski of East Greenwich, R.I., and Sandra Fletcher of Auburn, Maine; two nephews, Drew Sweetak and Alex Sweetak, both of Mellington, Md.; three great-nieces, Kimberly Jo Everitt of Virginia Beach, Robyn Kalinowski of Suffield, Conn., and Grace Ann Sweetak of Mellington; four great-nephews, Christopher Everitt of Virginia Beach, Jack Sweetak of Mellington, Robert Kalinowski of Warwick, R.I., and Christopher Fletcher of Auburn; one great-great-niece, Taryn Alyssa Formanek of Mellington.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 2, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York. Interment will be private in the Old Burying Ground in Ogunquit. There will be no visiting hours.

Andrew H. Wright

Andrew H. Wright, 49, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001.

A resident of Ellsworth, he had lived at various times in recent years in Portsmouth, N.H., Kittery and York.

Born in Stamford, Conn., on Dec. 18, 1952, he was the son of the late David H. and Anne (Marchand) Wright of Darien, Conn. He was a 1969 graduate of Bethel Academy, Bethel, Maine, and attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The former owner of Andy Wright Earthworks, he was employed in landscaping and masonry, and was an avid sailor, skier, biker and hiker.

Survivors include his long-time companion Monica Mitchell of Orono, Maine; his sisters, Bonnie Wright of Darien, and Nancy Wright Grossman of Portsmouth; a brother, David M. Wright of Southern Pines, N.C.; and a nephew, Seamus Curvin Grossman of Worcester, Mass.

Flora A. Woodford

Flora A. Woodford, 93, of 1324 U.S. Route 1, Cape Neddick, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at the Maine Stay Nursing Home in Sanford.

She was born on April 11, 1908, in York, the daughter of William and Laura (Woodward) Card. She was a graduate of York High School and Gorham Normal School.

Mrs. Woodford was a elementary school teacher beginning her teaching career at the Lincoln School on Cider Hill in York,. She later was a teacher at the York Beach School and was a teacher and principal at the Cape Neddick Elementary School. Mrs. Woodford had also worked as a loom operator at the York Historical Society's Old Gaol.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach. Mrs. Woodford was a member of the Ladies Aid and was active sewing, knitting and baking for church events. She was also active in the Girl Scouts, the Audubon Society, and was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

She was predeceased by her husband, James "Eddie" Woodford, who died in 1990, and by a son, James Edward Woodford, who died in 1976.

Survivors include one son, Warren Woodford of Bedford, Mass.; two daughters, Marcia Goodwin of Sanford and Laura Edwards of Fishers Island, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was held Monday in the First Parish Cemetery, York St., York. Memorial donations may be made in memory of Flora Woodford to the York Community Service Association, P.O. Box 85, Cape Neddick, ME 03902. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Anna Elizabeth Serwin

Anna Elizabeth "Betty" Serwin, 76, of Surf Avenue, York, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, at her winter home in Garden City Beach, S.C.

She was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Lowell, Mass., daughter of James and Esther (Johnson) Hanson. She was a 1942 graduate of Lowell High School.

She had worked as a secretary in the management department for the New England Telephone Company in Andover, Mass., from 1941 to 1980.

She had resided in Chelmsford, Mass., from 1952 to 1979, moving to York in 1979.

She had been a former member of the Chelmsford Street Baptist Church of Lowell. She had been a former member of the Telephone Pioneers and a girl officer of Rainbows. She enjoyed traveling, needlepoint , reading and crossword puzzles.

She was predeceased by a brother, Miles Hanson and two sisters, Evelyn Whitworth and Phyllis Carson.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Julius E. "Jay" Serwin of York and Garden City Beach; three daughters, Jayne Irish and her husband, David of York, Deborah Harkins and her husband, Paul of Dunstable, Mass., and Ellen Kerrigan and her husband, Bruce of Hudson, Mass.; four sisters, Helen Hogan of Mount Vernon, N.H., Doris Decatur of Nashua, N.H., Jane Rubin of York and Jacqueline Boisvert of Dracut, Mass.; five grandchildren, Jonathan, Andrew and Leah Irish and Shannon and Elizabeth Harkins.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Interment will take place in First Parish Cemetery, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 10 Bangor St., Suite F, Augusta, ME 04338.

Stephanie T. Dymer

Stephanie T. Dymer, 85, of Bethel Park, Pa., died comfortably in her sleep Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Jefferson Hills Manor nursing home in Pittsburgh, Pa., after a long illness.

Born in Pittsburgh on March 24, 1916, she was the daughter of Jozef and Aniela (Szerlong) Grad.

She was a communicant and active member of St. Valentine Church in Bethel Park. She was also a member of the Christian mothers, the Achades Club, the YWCA, and served as majority/minority official at the election polls in Bethel Park for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Judith Young, of York; a son, John Dymer, of Topanga, Calif.; a sister, Josephine Zola, of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, John Dymer, this past August.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Virginia Ferrara

Virginia Ferrara, 84, of Logging Road, Cape Neddick, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001 at York Hospital.

She was born Sept. 25, 1917 in Boston, Mass., daughter of Ceasar and Nina (Ventimiglia) Giamanco. She graduated from Girls High School and lived in the North End for many years.

After living in Saugus, Mass., for a few years and upon the death of her husband, Theodore Ferrara, in 1969, she moved to Maine to live with her daughter, Nina Warner in Cape Neddick.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

She was predeceased by a brother, Philip who died in childhood, and by a sister, Frances Giamanco, who died in 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Salvatore J. and his wife, Rosemarie Ferrara of Saugus, and Theodore Ferrara of Saugus; a daughter, Nina J. and her husband, Samuel Warner of Cape Neddick; a sister, Anna Buccilli of Melrose, Mass.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 28 in St. Christopher's Church, York, with Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York. Memorial donations may be made to either the Visiting Nurse Service or to Elderly Independence of Maine, at 42 Brickyard Court, York, ME 03909.

Carol M. Woloss

Carol M. Woloss, 52, of York Harbor, died with her husband at her side on Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in York Hospital, bringing to an end her courageous battle with cancer.

Born May 4, 1949 in Chicago, Ill., to the professional dance team of Alfredo and Bertha Cano, she attended St. Mary's Elementary and Elizabeth Seton High in Chicago. She attended the University of Madrid and received a degree in Spanish and secondary education from Quincy College in Quincy, Ill.

Truly a "modern" woman, she became corporate vice president for human resources for Nutramax, a multi-divisional health care corporation where she was responsible for the welfare of 1,200 employees. An entrepreneur at heart, she started two successful businesses, Garret-Evan Associates, Inc., a national search consultant firm specializing in the bio-tech and bio-medical marketplace, and Munchies, and upscale specialty market and delicatessen in York Harbor. She was a member of the SHRM State of Massachusetts Council and founder of both the Haverill Manufacturer's Roundtable and the Human Resource Forum in Billerica, Mass.

Woloss was a passionate fund-raiser for her favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Each year she would sponsor a table and fill it with her closest friends so they too could share in the joy of this annual black-tie event in Boston.

She loved animals with the same enthusiasm and was an advocate for their humane treatment. She enjoyed sewing, decorating, arts and crafts, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and most of all, dancing.

She is survived by her husband and soulmate, Robert Woloss of York Harbor, and her sister, Raquel Bernstein of Boca Raton, Fla.

A Mass of Christian burial, took place Dec. 27 at St. Michael's Church, Exeter, N.H., with burial following at the Exeter Cemetery. A donation in her memory may be sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, in Memphis, Tenn.

John J. Genewicz Jr.

John J. Genewicz Jr., of Arlington, Mass., died Dec. 26, 2001.

Genewicz is the son of the late John J. Sr. and Valerie Genewicz.

He was a retired captain for U.S. Airways, and was a U.S. Air Force, Vietnam veteran.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Genewicz.

Survivors include his wife, Ann M. (Spera) Genewicz; his children, Anne V. Delaney and her husband, Russell of Nashua, N.H., Michael Genewicz of York, Lisa Bowers and her husband, Matthew of Bedford, Mass.; and nine grandsons.

A funeral was held Dec. 29, at the DeVito-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Arlington Heights, Mass., with burial following in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, in Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The American Lung Association, 5 Mountain Road, Burlington, MA 01803.

Annette Donnell

Annette Shorey Donnell, 99, of Ridge Road, York Beach, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2001 at the Harbor Home.

She was born in Cape Neddick, March 29, 1902, daughter of Charles W. and Carrie M. (Avery) Farwell. She graduated from York High School.

She worked as a private housekeeper for many York Beach area families, including Dr. Norman Emery, The Ellis Camp, Lawless Family, Roger Norton and for the Garfields.

She was a member of the Union Congregational Church of York Beach and enjoyed cooking and baking for her husband and seven sons. She lived on Ridge Road for 80 years before moving to the Harbor Home two years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur H. Donnell, who died in 1954; three sons, Arthur who died in 1998, Gordon who died in 1994, and Russell, Sr., who died in 1988. She was also predeceased by her half brother, Holland Avery, and by two grandchildren.

She is survived by four sons, David Donnell of Kittery, Gerald Donnell of Portsmouth, N.H., Earle Donnell of York Beach, and Richard Donnell of Augusta, Ga.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Private services were held. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral home, York.

Gladys L. Wamsley

Gladys L. Wamsley, 92, formerly of Plaisted Road, York, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.

She was born July 4, 1909 in Ogunquit, daughter of Arthur and Esther May (Cole) Perkins.

She worked at Uncle Tom's Cabins, Route 1, Kittery for many years.

She enjoyed sewing and riding in the mountains and along the seacoast. She loved animals, especially dogs.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, who died in 1978; two brothers, Chesley and Clifford Perkins; and by two sisters, Beatrice Falls and Frances O'Keefe.

Survivors include two nieces, Bonnie Rainville of Cape Neddick, and Cynthia Foster of Colorado.

Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 31 in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Arrangements were by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Jerry Everton Craig

Jerry Everton Craig, 66, of Southwest Harbor, died Feb. 15, 2002, at a Bangor hospital.

He was born July 17, 1935 in Northeast Harbor, the son of William Henry and Harriett Josephine (Gott) Craig.

Jerry graduated from Pemetic High School and attended Williams School of Banking. He also served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was the Republican chairman of Southwest Harbor, past director of the Chamber of Commerce, former selectman of Southwest Harbor. He worked at Erin Corp., Ellsworth Holiday Inn and has been a small-business owner and banker, and was a member of the American Legion. He was most proud of being cofounder and past president of the Harbor House and cofounder and chairman of the Southwest Harbor Housing Authority for 25 years.

Jerry was proud of his contribution to the communities on MDI by working to help finance the dreams of fishermen, small-business owners and families during his tenure in banking.

He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Karen (Hupper) Craig of Southwest Harbor; two sons, Scott and his wife, Suzanne of Kennebunk and Jim of Southwest Harbor; a daughter, Jennie and her fiancé, Dudley Poirier of Bass Harbor and Tennessee; two very special grandchildren, Mike and Betsy of Kennebunk.

A memorial service was held Feb. 17 at Fernald Funeral Chapel, Mount Desert.

Spring Interment will be held at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor.

Daniel E. Davis Sr.

Daniel E. Davis Sr., 83, formerly of Desmond Lane, York, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at The McGinnis Home in Berwick after a long illness.

He was born in Boston, June 10, 1918, son of Daniel and Gertrude (Emerson) Davis and graduated from Newton High School, class of 1936.

Mr. Davis was the "D" in D&N Taxi of York, which he had owned with his wife, Nancy.

He was a member of the No Trump Bridge Club.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley (Robertson) Davis, who died in 1979, and by his second wife, Nancy Lee (Henley) Davis, who dies in 1993.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel E. Davis Jr., of Burlington, Conn. and Wayne Davis of Rio Rancho, N.M.; three daughters, Carole Burton of Vancouver, Wash., Victoria Pincoske of Gardiner, N.Y. and Joanne Johnston of Seoul, Korea; two brothers, Alan Davis of West Newton, Mass., and James L. Davis of West Lebanon; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Monday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York. Donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements were made by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.
