Patricia Shirley (Horning) Donnell

Mrs. Patricia Donnell, 63, of Ogunquit, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Mrs. Donnell was born March 17, 1939 in York, the daughter of Margaret (Adams) and the late Harry Horning. She attended York schools and graduated from York High School.

Mrs. Donnell went to college in the Boston area where she studied nursing. She became a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and over the years she worked as a private duty nurse throughout the Seacoast area.

In her leisure time she loved the great outdoors, taking walks and camping. She loved to travel and over the years she has had camping trips and expeditions in Alabama, Hawaii, and Gettysburg, Pa. Patricia was also an avid bird hunter. She loved to spend time with her family, and going lobstering with her dear, loving, longtime companion, Pete Apgar, of Ogunquit.

Patricia was married to Robert Donnell Sr., who predeceased her in 1976. She was also predeceased by a sister, Jane Jacobs.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Horning of Portsmouth, N.H.; three sons, Robert, Jeffrey and Timothy Donnell, all of York; three brothers, Russell Horning of Edgewater, Fla., and Harry and James Horning, both of Kittery; her five cherished grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no funeral services or visitation hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Robert N. Kendall

Robert N. Kendall, 61, of 1 Strater Hill, York, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born April 28, 1940, in Rochester, N.H., the son of Kennett R. and Mary (Neal) Kendall. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College receiving a bachelor's degree in history. He also served in the New Hampshire National Guard.

Mr. Kendall was the collegiate crew chief of the eight-man crew team at Phillips Exeter Academy and Dartmouth College and trained for the Olympics in the 1960s.

He was vice president of the family-run business, Kendall Insurance of Rochester, N.H.

Mr. Kendall attended the First Parish Congregational Church of York. He was instrumental in organizing the Rochester Boys Club during the 1960s and served on its board of directors. He served as a member of the York Hospital board of directors for 14 years and was a member of the board of directors of Great Bay Bank Shares for 20 years.

He served as treasurer of Strawbery Banke for many years, and served as treasurer and accountant of The Music Hall of Portsmouth, N.H. He also served as president of the trustees of Berwick Academy Lower School and was active with their endowment fund.

Mr. Kendall served on the board of directors of the York Country Club and was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. He enjoyed sailing Downeast on his sloop, "Copesetic."

Survivors include his wife, Ann (Laundon) Kendall of York; two sons, Robert N. Kendall, Jr., and his wife, Christine of North Berwick, and Charles Rice Kendall of York; one step-daughter, Brynanne Anderson of York.

A memorial service was held Monday in the First Parish Church, York Street, York. Family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909, or to The Music Hall, 28 Chestnut St., Portsmouth, NH 03801, or to Strawbery Banke, P.O. Box 300, Portsmouth, NH 03802. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home.

Mark H. Loftus

Mark H. Loftus, 40, of Post Road, Wells, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at his residence.

He was born May 3, 1961 in Coos Bay, Ore., the son of John H. and Diane (Urwick) Loftus. He attended Molalla Union High School in Molalla, Ore. He also attended Clackamas Community College in Oregon, Hennepin Technical College in Minnesota and York County Technical College in Wells.

He enjoyed music, camping, fishing, wrestling, Nascar racing and family activities.

He was predeceased by a sister, Karen Ann Loftus, and by his grandparents, Richard and Linda Urwick, formerly of York.

Survivors include his mother, Diane Loftus of York; his father, John H. Loftus of Roseburg, Ore.; two brothers, William A. Loftus and John R. Loftus, both of York; a sister, Alena L. Loftus of York; one niece, one great-niece and one great-nephew.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Winifred Bakula

Winifred Bakula, 76, of Indian Trail, York, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Malvene, N.Y., a daughter of Gustaf and Esther (Nelson) Nissen. She was a graduate of Concord High School in Concord, Mass. She attended college at The Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts and at the Vesper George Art School, both of Boston.

Mrs. Bakula worked for the former Boston Post. She and her husband Henry, a well-known local artist who died in June 2000, owned and operated Bakula Studios for more than 35 years. She was an award-winning artist who had enjoyed participating in many shows, especially those sponsored by two local art associations, the York Art Association and the Kittery Art Association, of which she was an active member in both. She was a member of the Yorks Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include her daughter, Linnea Romeo and her husband, William, of Waltham, Mass; one son, Steven Bakula and his wife, Janice, of Eliot; three sisters, Helene Santora of Concord, Mass., Esther Dimeo of Clearwater, Fla., and Betty Craig of Dorchester, Mass.; two grandchildren, Brianna and Jenny Guilford. Mrs. Bakula is also survived by a close friend, Evelyn Wold of York, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, N.H. on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The York Art Association, P.O. Box 44, Kittery Point, ME 03905. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Kenneth C. Fuller

Kenneth C. Fuller, 81, beloved husband for 56 years of Myrtle (Seamans) Fuller of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Tyngsboro, Mass., and York Beach, died Thursday morning, March 7, 2002, in the Charlotte County Regional Medical Center, Port Charlotte.

He was born in Dracut, Mass., on May 22, 1920, a son of the late Arlington and Evelyn L. (Garland) Fuller.

An honorably discharged veteran, he earned a Bronze Star while serving his country during World War II as a private in the United States Army, seeing action overseas.

Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a Special Police Officer for 25 years by the town of Tyngsboro and also was employed by the United States Government and a Civil Post Engineer for 26 years working at the Ft. Devens Army Base.

He was a member of both the Pelham (N.H.) American Legion and the Tyngsboro American Legion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Brenda Wyman of New Hampshire, and Mrs. Nelson (Marsha) Temple of Massachusetts; one son, Bruce Fuller of Florida; four grandchildren, Kimberly Farrington, Lori Wagner, and Amy and Sara Fuller; six great-grandchildren, Tayla, Katelyn and Samantha Farrington and Michael, Jack and Justine Wagner; two sisters, Alice Frappier and Shirley Rowe; one brother, Arthur Fuller; one sister-in-law, Lorna Seamans, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Gary Fuller and brother of the late Edward Fuller.

John A. Bartok

John A. Bartok, 64, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and Ogunquit, died Feb. 10, 2002, at his Florida residence.

Born in Connecticut and raised in Westchester County, N.Y., he had been a longtime resident of Ogunquit since the late 1960s.

During his tenure, he was very active in the community and local politics, even serving for a short time as town selectman.

Before retirement, he was an accomplished artist and the proprietor of Creative Painting and Design, located on Shore Road, Ogunquit. He was the recipient of many awards in national juried competitions.

He was listed in "Who's Who," and was a member of the New England Watercolor Society. He exhibited in New York at the American Artists Professional League Grand National, the Salmagundi Club, the National Academy of Design in American Watercolor Society and Allied Artists of America exhibitions.

Other national juried exhibitions have included Mainstream, Marietta, Ohio; Springfield Museum, Mass.; the Copley Society of Boston; North Shore Art Association, Gloucester, Mass.; and the Ogunquit Art Center in Ogunquit.

He had once served on the board of directors of the American Artists Professional League in New York City.

He was an avid golfer and tennis player.

Survivors include his wife of eight years, Karen Bartok of Port St. Lucie; a daughter, Kirsten Bartok of San Francisco.; a son, Jared Bartok of New York, N.Y.; two sisters, Anne Clarke and her husband, Alan, of Oxford, Conn., and Amy Namnoum and her husband, Joseph, of Palm City, Fla., and; a twin brother, Mathias "Matt" Bartok of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Jackie Stevens of Fort Myers, Fla., and Becky Riley of Nashville, Tenn.; a stepson, Andy Stevens of Claremont, N.H.; and six stepgrandchildren.

A memorial Mass was celebrated on Feb. 14.

Winthrop Lee

Winthrop Howard Lee, 88, a longtime resident of Concord, Mass., died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. He was the husband of Barbara (Bartlett) Lee.

Born in Brookline, Mass., his family moved to Concord in 1921 where he attended the Peter Bulkeley elementary school. He then attended Groton School and went on to Harvard College, graduating in 1936.

After Harvard Business School and several years in business, he volunteered for the Army in December 1940, where he completed Officer Candidate School and was stationed in northern Africa in 1942 and later in Europe. He served overseas as aid to General Keyes until May of 1945, and when he returned, married Barbara on Sept. 15 of that year.

He worked in management at the Riverside Press, Cambridge, Mass. for the next 33 years. In 1971, he founded Lee Associates, a consulting firm specializing in human resource management, including union negotiations and creating employee and personnel policies.

He was one of the four founders of the Concord-Carlisle Community Chest in 1947, served on the town school committee for six years, and as senior warden at Trinity Church from 1960 to 65.

An avid outdoorsman, he could often be found exploring Concord's woods, canoeing through its marshes searching out wildflowers, or leading bird walks for the local chapter of Massachusetts Audubon. He and Barbara enjoyed traveling with friends, pursuing these interests.

He is also survived by his son, Malcolm B. Lee and his wife, Katherine, of Harvard; his daughter, Caroline and her husband, Todd, of Concord; three grandchildren, Lee, John and Hope Crocker, and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Saint George Tucker Lee of Virginia.

Contributions in his memory may be made to: The Home for Little Wanderers, 271 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02115. A memorial service is planned for Monday, March 4 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Elm and River streets, Concord.

Cora Louise VanValkenburg

Cora Louise VanValkenburg, 101, formerly of 7 Fourth Ave., York Beach, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, in York Harbor.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1900, in Stoughton, Mass., the daughter of Charles and Estelle (Parks) Casartello and attended Rumford, R.I. schools.

She had formerly resided in Florida, moving to York Beach in 1995. She had resided in Arlington and Bedford, Mass., for many years.

She was a member of the St. Michael's and Grace Episcopal Church of East Providence, R.I. and attended St. George's Episcopal Church in York Harbor. Mrs. VanValkenburg had taught piano lessons for many years from her home when she resided in Massachusetts. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed making crafts and knitting.

She was the widow of Frederick VanValkenburg Jr., who died in 1935.

Survivors include two sons, Earle P. VanValkenburg of York Beach and Charles F. VanValkenburg of Greenville, N.H.; two daughters, Helen L. VanValkenburgh of Raleigh, N.C. and Agawam, Mass., and Madeline Barton of Arlington, Mass.; one sister, Olive Lattimer of Sharon, Conn.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28, in St. George's Episcopal Church, York Harbor. A memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 1, in St. Michael's and Grace Episcopal Church, Rumford, R.I. Burial will be in Carpenter Cemetery, Rumford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home.

Ronald T. DiCesare

Ronald T. DiCesare, 73, of Malden, Mass. and Kennebunkport, died at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, after a short illness.

Born in Malden, he graduated from Malden High School, class of 1948. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Suffolk University and a C.A.G.S. degree from Boston University.

He was a Malden educator for many years, teaching first at the Linden School, then the Faulkner School. He was a principal at the Leonard grammar school and Brown Junior High School retiring from that school.

He was a Korean War Army Veteran.

He and his wife, Elaine, owned and operated the Anchorage Guests at Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport, for more than 40 years.

He was a former member of Malden Rotary.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine F. (Butler) of Malden and Kennebunkport; children, Daniel DiCesare of Portsmouth, N.H., Helene DiCesare of Cape Porpoise, and Peter DiCesare of York Harbor; a sister, Elinor Murphy of Wilmette, Ill.; a brother, John DiCesare of New Hampshire.

He was predeceased by a sister, Anna Masterson, and a brother, Paul DiCesare.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday at the E.E. Burns and Son Funeral Home, 204 Main St., Malden. A funeral Mass will be held at the Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St., Wakefield, Mass., Friday at 10 a.m., with burial following at Holy Cross cemetery in Malden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Oraville Manson (Grant) Piché

Oraville M. Piché, 87, of 5 North St., York, formerly of Kittery for 80 years, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, after a lengthy period of failing health. She was born Feb. 25, 1915, in Kittery, the middle child of Clarence and Lucy (Haley) Grant.

In the 1940s she got into the banking business beginning with Community Trust at the shipyard. She then went to N.H. National Bank and stayed with that bank as it changed names.

For hobbies she enjoyed gardening and reading. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, N.H., until her move to York.

Survivors include a brother, George Grant of Los Angeles; a daughter, Patricia Keen and her husband Everett of York; a son, Gordon G. Piché, USCG, retired, and his wife R. Jane of Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Keen of York, Tami Colburn and her husband Jeffrey of South Berwick, James D. Piché and his wife Mary Jo of Vienna, Va., and George G. Piché and his wife Kristy of Kendallville, Ind.; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Daniel E. Piché, a sister, Helen G. Kauffman; and a nephew, Gerald D. Kauffmann.

A graveside service will be held in Orchard Grove Cemetery, Kittery, Tuesday, April 23, at 11 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Family flowers only.

Pauline R. Ramsdell

Pauline R. Ramsdell, 63, of Nonantum Trail, York, died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born April 25, 1938, in Rochester, N.H., the daughter of Frank E. and Rose (Patanude) Glidden.

Mrs. Ramsdell worked side by side with her husband, Earl, establishing the Earl Ramsdell Stone and Gravel Company in York. She was a hard worker and often times was seen in one truck with her young sons, while Earl was loading gravel into another truck.

She enjoyed knitting and doing crafts. Mrs. Ramsdell was a loving and devoted grandmother to her three grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling and was a member of the Kittery Rotary Club.

She was predeceased by her husband, Earl E. Ramsdell, who died June 14, 1995, and by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, David E. Ramsdell of Cape Neddick, and Ronald and his wife, Linda Ramsdell of Cape Neddick; two brothers, Roland Glidden of El Paso, Texas, and George Glidden of Farmington, N.H.; two sisters, Joyce King of Rochester, N.H., and Jean Gains of Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Linda Stabrow of Cape Neddick; three grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and her mixed breed collie and black Labrador dog, Jimmy.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, with Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York. Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, N.E. Division, Inc., 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
