Victoria 'Vicky' M. Quinney

Victoria "Vicky" M. Quinney, 81, of Portsmouth Ave., Exeter, N.H., died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the Sunbridge Rehabilitation Center in Exeter after a period of failing health.

She was born Sept. 15, 1920 in Boston, Mass., daughter of the late Paul and Victoria (Gorski) Renaud.

She had resided in Exeter since 1960, having come from Louisville, Ky. The family had lived in different parts of the country and even in Germany, as her husband, Austin, was in the service.

They owned and operated the Quinney's West End Drug Store in Exeter for about 15 years.

She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Exeter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Austin F. Quinney, who died in 1989.

She is survived by four sons, Edward P.M. Quinney of Wells, John "Jack" Quinney of Kingston, N.H., Joseph Quinney of Exeter, and James Quinney of Golden, Colo.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Renaud of Wells, and Alfred "Whitey" Renaud of Newark, Del.; several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Thursday, Jan. 17 at St. Michael's Church, with burial following in the Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus, 73 Winter St., Exeter, N.H. 03833, as her husband served as grand master.

Madelene Talcott Morlock

Madelene Talcott Morlock, 92, passed away Friday, March 29, 2002.

Madelene was born in Winchendon, Mass., the daughter of the late Edwin and Lena Miller Talcott. She lived in Baldwinville, Mass. for most of her life, was a longtime summer resident of York Beach, had moved to Ballston Spa, N.Y., and most recently to Norfolk, Va.

Mrs. Morlock is predeceased in death by her husband, Arthur Richard Morlock; her parents, and a sister, Leona Burns.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Lee Hall and her husband, David of Fredricksburg, Texas; her grandchildren, Susan Zirpolo, Dona Hall, David Hall, Jr., and six great-grandchildren. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 3, at The Balantine Retirement Home, 7211 Granby St., Norfolk. Burial will take place in Winchendon, Mass. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Morlock's memory to her great-grandson's school, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, VA 23434.

William A. Suter

William A. Suter, 82, of 11 Hawthorne Lane, York, passed away on March 19, 2002. He was a native of Norfolk, Va., son of Fred A. and Sallie D. Suter and husband of Constance Spurr Suter for more than 54 years.

After his 1939 graduation from Maury High School, he worked in the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot, St. Julien's Creek, Portsmouth, Va., until he joined the Navy during wartime.

A veteran of World War II, he served aboard the "original" USS Saratoga aircraft carrier. Upon being honorably discharged when the war ended, he became a student at the VPI Ext. of William and Mary College and completed a two-year civil engineering course. He then re-enlisted in the US Navy as a station keeper on the Norfolk Air Station where he served until he and his wife moved to Massachusetts.

Once established in Andover, he became an employee of the federal government civil service and built a 29-year career servicing the USAF Military Aircraft at Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass. During that period, he was promoted to be the work center supervisor of three maintenance hangars for the repair performance on each aircraft stationed there (i.e. jet engines: reciprocating engines and various other Air Force aircraft.) He was responsible for ensuring that quality, top-performance maintenance work was performed; he personally inspected all repairs and required flights tested; then judged its ability to fly perfectly. His skilled judgment on the test for "perfect flying" required his personal signature; — otherwise aircraft was grounded and returned to its hangar for corrective maintenance. His judgment earned several "Sustained Superior Performance Awards" and a "Commendation".

William is survived by his wife, Constance; a son, Robert; a daughter, Diane Simmers and her husband Brian; his granddaughter, Ashley Bartlett; two step-grandchildren, Jillian and Matthew Simmers; and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Poore Spurr. Also four nieces; two nephews; plus their children.

Private viewing by immediate family only was held at the Dewhirst & Conte Funeral Home in Andover. The Rev. Dussie of Grace Episcopal Church (where Bill and Connie were married) offered prayers and solace. Cremation followed, overseen by Mr. Conte, funeral director.

John Thomas Griffin

John Thomas Griffin, 69, of Dock Road, York, died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born Oct. 20, 1932 in Wellesley, Mass., son of John T. and Rose Elizabeth (Johnson) Griffin and graduated from Wellesley High School.

Mr. Griffin served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He had worked as quality control engineer for a high tech computer manufacturing company for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty (Bond) Griffin of York; two daughters, Susan Anne Hauk of Groton, Mass., and Diane Louise McGraw of Middleton, Del.; one brother, Robert J. Griffin of Natick, Mass.; two grandchildren, Benjamin J. and Alexander G. Hauk, both of Groton.

Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Madeleine Joyce Hennessy

Madeleine Joyce Hennessy, 53, of Trumbull, Conn., died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 18, 1948, in Syracuse, N.Y., she was the daughter of Richard and Doris (Howe) Hennessy of Cape Neddick.

She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in the Nichols section of Trumbull. As warden she was instrumental in the development of the Trinity memorial garden. Madeleine was a dedicated member of the adult choir, and participated fully in the life of the church.

Madeleine always loved written language. As a little girl, words and their power fascinated her. She began writing poetry before the age of 10. An outstanding high school English student, she won the English medal upon graduation from Notre Dame High School. Madeleine majored in English and earned a BA degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1970, where she was also named in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."

Madeleine's first post-college job was with the Schenectady County Department of Social Services. She began in 1970 as a child welfare adoption worker and was promoted to foster care case supervisor before resigning in 1984 to move to Connecticut and to raise her first child.

While living in Schenectady, Madeleine developed her talents as a poet. For more than 10 years Madeleine was a member of a local poetry group, where her contributions as an insightful critic were considered invaluable. She was a contributing poet ad on the editorial board of The Washout Review, a quarterly magazine published in Schenectady. Madeleine also published regularly in Yankee Magazine, Pavor Nocturnus and The Christmas Poems of Madeleine Hennessy are her two self-published poetry books. While extending her talents as a poet, Madeleine developed an interest in newspapers. Her career path included positions such as a nursery school teacher, editing and proofreading, and she was a consultant for various companies. most recently, she was employed by Micro Warehouse as senior catalogue manager, where she was loved and respected by her coworkers. Madeleine was a devoted mother and was dearly loved by her many friends. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her daughters, Caitlin Anne Smolinski and Julie Grace Smolinski of Trumbull; a sister, Doris Blaisdell and her husband, Thomas of York; two brothers, James Hennessy and his wife, Sandy of Newton, N.H., and Richard Hennessy and his wife, Joelyn, of Madison, Miss.; a brother-in-law, Jeff Blum of Westport, Conn.; her devoted companion, Gerry Lemay of Milford, Conn.; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mary H. Blum, in 1996.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 30 in Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her name to Trinity Episcopal Church Memorial Garden Fund, 1734 Huntington Turnpike, Trumbull, CT 06601, or to the Connecticut Higher Education Trust, P.O. Box 150499, Hartford, CT 06115, to benefit the education of her daughters.

William D. Kiernan

William D. Kiernan, 63, of York Beach died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at York Hospital after a two year battle with cancer.

He was born in Boston, on Dec. 8, 1938. The son of Edward and Veronica Kiernan, raised in Jamaica Plains, Roxbury, Mass., he was a graduate of Boston Trade School in 1958 as an electrician.

He served in the Army from 1961 to 1966, and was honorably discharged as a seaman and marksman.

He will be remembered by his son, David Kiernan of York; a brother, Walter Kiernan of York; three sisters, Sally Severi, Margaret Lovejoy and Ruth Fields, as well as many other family members and friends.

There will be a gathering of family and friends at the V.F.W. Post 6977, on Route 1A in Cape Neddick, on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Alan K. Nelson

Alan K. Nelson, 71, of Rollingwood Drive, Eliot, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 8, 1930, in Hartford, Conn., he was a son of Oscar and Margaret (Lawrence) Nelson. He attended local schools, graduating from Wethersfield High School with the Class of 1948, and furthered his education at the University of Connecticut. As a member of the Connecticut National Guard, he served his country during the Korean War.

He was employed by Combustion Engineering for more than 25 years in Windsor, Conn., before moving to Eliot in 1975 and working for ABB in Newington, N.H. for 20-plus years, retiring in the late 1990s.

During his time in Connecticut, he and his wife were active members of the Central Baptist Church in Hartford, Conn. He served as a Little League coach and as an umpire for Little League and Babe Ruth leagues.

After moving to the Seacoast, he became a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club, enjoying time spent on the golf course. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid bridge player and crossword puzzle expert. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing with the Seacoast Square Dancing Club, of which he was a past president.

He was never idle; whether playing one of his favorite sports, or helping a friend or family member with a project around their home, he was always busy.

His greatest enjoyment, however, was his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Alice (Hall) Nelson of Eliot; his daughters, Kathy Hunt and her husband, Daniel, of Savannah, Tenn., Laurie Smith of Eliot, and Shari Mitchell and her husband, Jeffrey, of Myakka City, Fla.; his son, Alan K. Nelson Jr., of Enfield, Conn.; his two sisters, Avril Miller of East Hartford, Conn., and Carol Holmelund of Dover, N.J.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Saturday, June 8, 2002, at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, Kittery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to York Hospital, Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Carolyn A. Anderson

Carolyn A. Anderson, 67, of 5 Harding Way, Kennebunk, formerly of Idlewood Lane, Kittery, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at her residence after a long illness.

She was born on Jan. 23, 1935, in Dover, N.H., the daughter of George H. and Hazel (Lewis) Blaisdell.

Mrs. Anderson attended Dover High School and received her diploma in 1989 from the Marshwood Adult Education program.

She had worked as an assembler and supervisor at Watts Fluid Power in Kittery for twenty years. She also authored the column "Sweet Memories" in Foster's Daily Democrat from 1982 to 1985.

She was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #6 of Portsmouth, N.H.

Mrs. Anderson enjoyed cooking, cross-stitching, knitting and spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Donald James Anderson, in 1999.

Survivors include one son, George Drew of York; three daughters, Karen Miller of Kennebunk, Lauren Clark of Wells and Jennifer McFarland of York; one sister, Shirley Calvert of Portsmouth; two step-children, James Anderson of Vernon, Conn., and Martha Brulotte of Portsmouth; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

A funeral service with the American Legion Auxiliary was held Saturday, June 15 in the First Parish Church of York, with Interment in First Parish Cemetery, York Street, York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Parish Church for Pilgrim Lodge Camp scholarships, 180 York St., York, ME 03909.

Thomas B. Connarton, Jr.

Thomas B. Connarton, Jr., 62, of 5 Gross Ave., York, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at his residence.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1940, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Thomas B., Sr., and Sadie Connarton. He served in the National Guard.

Mr. Connarton was a firefighter with the City of Cambridge for more than thirty years. He had also worked for Cambridge Chemical Exterminator Company.

He had formerly resided in Tewksbury, Mass., and Cambridge, moving to York in 1990. He had worked part-time at the Union Bluff Hotel in York Beach.

He was a communicant of St. Williams Church of Tewksbury. Mr. Connarton was a member of the Elks Club in Cambridge and Stoneham, Mass.

He was predeceased by his wife, Carol (Phillips) Connarton, who died in 1997.

Survivors include his son, Thomas B. Connarton, III, and his fiancee, Jennifer Theos of Haverill, Mass.; a stepson, Steven Fahey and his wife, Meredith, of Tewksbury; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Richard (Karen) Mercier of Dracut, Mass.; two brothers, John Connarton of Waltham, Mass., and Joseph Connarton of Cambridge; four grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Friday, June 14 in the Tewksbury Cemetery, East Street, Tewksbury. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Beach Fire Dept., P.O. Box 70, York Beach, ME 03910.

Merle Elizabeth (Hankins) Moersch

Merle Elizabeth (Hankins) Moersch, formerly of West Palm beach, Fla., and Toledo, Ohio, died June 16, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, a daughter of Minnie and William Hankins.

Mrs. Moersch was raised and schooled in Latrobe, Pa. She met her future husband, Roy C. Moersch while in high school. They spent 63 happy years together. After the death of her husband, she moved to Maine to be near family.

Throughout her life she was active with children and children's activities including the Ohio Girl Scout Council and The Children's Place in West Palm Beach. She was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Ned Neal of Cape Neddick; her sisters, Minnie Wingert of Englewood, Fla., and Sally Erny of Groveland, Calif.; her brothers, George of Atlanta, Ga., and Walt, also of Georgia; seven grandsons, three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Dianne, and her husband, Roy.

Services were private with arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.
