Wilda E. Tonnesen

Wilda E. Tonnesen, 88, of Jeff Lane, Derry, N.H., died Monday, June 10, 2002, in Tempe, Ariz.

She was born in Toma, Wis. on Sept. 2, 1913, a daughter of the late Edward and Celeste (Hall) Becker.

She was a resident of Derry for more than 10 years, formerly living in Virginia and York. She was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, Ill.

Her life's work was being a pastor's wife and schoolteacher. She and her husband pastured to many churches over the years, including families in the surrounding communities.

She is survived by two sons, R Bruce Tonnesen of Derry, and Martin E., Tonnesen of Hinsdale, N.H.; one daughter, Lois C. Anderson, of Tempe, Ariz.; one sister, Edith Lenz of Toma, Wis. eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Rev. Robert Tonnesen.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 15 at the Windham Bible Church, Windham, N.H., with burial in Forest Hill Cemetery, East Derry, N.H. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry, is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Arlene Avery

Sarah Arlene Avery, 87, formerly of Route 1, Cape Neddick, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born June 19, 1915, in Kennebunkport, daughter of John I. and Rowena (Clough) Bryant. She graduated from Wells High School.

For more than 50 years, she worked as a housekeeper for the Mason Estates in York Harbor, retiring at 82. She had many fond memories and stories about the many families and visitors she met while working in the Harbor.

She attended the Cape Neddick Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, embroidery, knitting and reading.

She especially enjoyed being with and cooking for her family.

She was the wife of the late Clarence E. Avery, who died in 1988.

She was also predeceased by three brothers, Wilbur, William and Donald Bryant.

Survivors include three sons, Kenneth and Darlene Avery of Dover, N.H., Gerald and Valerie Avery of Framingham, Mass., and Ronald and Wanda-Lee Avery of Cape Neddick; two daughters, Jill Hamm of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Shirley and V.J. Hendley of North Augusta, S.C.; one sister, Doris Houston of Biddeford; nine grandchildren, Joyce Brinson, Brian Hamm, Jennifer Strange, Robert Avery, Julie Avery, Ronald Avery Jr., Brandon Avery, Ryan Avery and Jared Avery; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York, with Interment in the First Parish Cemetery, York. Memorial donations may be made to the Harbor Home Activities Fund, P.O. Box 60, York Harbor, ME 03911.

Gisele Brisson

Gisele Brisson of York died Friday, July 5, 2002 at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mrs. Brisson was born in Belgium in 1936 and came to the United States as a bride in 1957. Before her move to York, she lived for many years in Tenafly, N.J., where she raised her family with her husband, John G. Brisson, who predeceased her in 1984. She was also predeceased by her second husband, David J. Hobens, in 2001.

Gisele was a loving mother and devoted friend. Her passions included cooking and reading, as well as get-togethers with friends and family, and long walks on the beach with her dog, Ursa. She will be remembered most for her effervescent personality, her engaging accent, her elegance, her grace and her generous spirit.

She is survived by her four children: John and his wife, Susan, and Gigi, Andree, and Michele and her companion, John; two sisters, Andree and Ann Marie; and four grandchildren: Sarah, Jack, Isabelle, and Delphine.

A memorial service will be held at St. George's Episcopal Church in York on Sunday, Aug. 4. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge, 321 Post Road, Wells, ME 04090, or to the Nature Conservatory.

Andrew Philip Colby Sr.

Andrew "Grandfather and Pappa" Philip Colby Sr., 86, of York and Bristol, husband of Virginia (Grace) Colby died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Harbor Home.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 28, 1916, the son of Constantine and Amelia (Debnicki) Pogorelski.

Andy was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country from 1942 to 1945. He served in the 1st Combat Engineers, of the 1st Infantry Division, aka the "Big Red One." Andy was a veritable encyclopedia of World War II history, as he took part in nearly every major action and battle of the war in Europe. He took part in three major invasions: North Africa 1942, Sicily 1943, and June 6, 1944, Omaha Beach, Normandy. He also saw action in the taking of the first German city of Aachen, the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and helped build pontoon bridges near the Remargen Bridge on the Rhine River. He took part in the subsequent invasion of Germany and when the war ended in May 1945, he and the "Big Red One" were in Pilsen Czechoslovakia. Since Andy was fluent in Polish, he stayed in Germany until November 1945, helping with the many displaced peoples and Holocaust survivors who spoke Polish and were in need of assistance. He spent 3 1/2 years overseas.

Andy had entered the war a private in 1942; by 1945 he was a tech sergeant. In 1943, during the Battle of El Guettar in Tunisia, Andy received a Bronze Star for his actions. He insisted that General George S. Patton was instrumental in him receiving the medal. Andy's oral history of his war memories were recorded in 1999, and sent to the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans.

Andy was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in Amityville, N.Y., by New York State Senator Owen H. Johnson at a ceremony on May 17, 1992 at the Amityville American Legion Post No. 1015.

He was a banker for the First National City Bank in New York.

Andy is survived by his wife, Virginia (Grace) Colby of Bristol; two sons, Andrew and Deirdre Colby of South Berwick, and Christian Colby of York Beach; a daughter, Elizabeth and Brennen Rumble of York; four grandchildren, Trenor and Linden Grace Colby, both of South Berwick, and Emily Kate and Jenna Elizabeth Rumble, both of York; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and many friends.

Services will be held in August at a time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate memorial donations to be made to the Rotary Club of York for their "Polio Eradication Fund" a Rotary International appeal, in memory of Andrew P. Colby Sr., and his nephew, Tommy Slawski, a victim of polio, 1948-1956, Rotary Club of York, Maine, c/o Kennebunk Savings Bank, 16 Woodbridge Road, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Phillippe J. Gregoire

Phillippe J. Gregoire, 81, of 37 Harding St., Rochester, N.H., died Friday morning, July 26, 2002, after a long illness. He died at the home of his daughter, Ann Marie Cooley of York.

He was born May 27, 1921, in Somersworth, N.H. He was the son of Camille and Melina (Lessard) Gregoire. He had lived in this area all of his life. He attended St. Martins Academy.

He was an accomplished violinist and in his younger years he was a member of the Cantin Hillbilly Band. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Sergeant in the Army. He received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered during the invasion of Normandy beach on D-day. He also received two oak leaf clusters and a Silver Star. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years and retired in 1969. He then worked as a finish carpenter for 10 years at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid gardener and woodworker all his life.

His wife, Margaret (Wiggin) Gregoire died in November 1978. He was also predeceased by a brother, Raymond Gregoire, Dec. 2, 2001.

Survivors include his beloved daughter, Ann Marie Cooley; loving son-in-law, Barry Cooley; the light of his life, beloved granddaughter Erin Margaret Cooley; four brothers, Del Gregoire and his wife, Irene, of Milton, N.H., Noel Gregoire and his wife, Irene, and Paul Gregoire and his wife, Connie, all of Somersworth, and Lionel Gregoire of Andover.; a sister-in-law, Arlene of Barrington, N.H.; two sisters, Albertine Lajoie of Berwick, and Blanche Gervais of Somersworth; several nieces and nephews.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to York Hospital Home Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909, or to York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Lowell St., Rochester, with Father Kelso as celebrant. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, Franklin St., Rochester, following the service. Arrangements under the direction of the R.M. Edgerly & Son Funeral Home, Rochester.

Amelie 'Lee' Guiler Hedin

Amelie "Lee" Guiler Hedin, 81, of York, died at York Hospital on Monday, July 22, 2002, of complications from ovarian cancer.

She was born in San Diego, Calif., and, as the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Robert P. Guiler, she had the opportunity to travel to many Navy ports throughout the world. Mrs. Hedin graduated from the Holton-Arms School, Washington, D.C., in 1938.

In 1945, she married the late Burton L. Hedin. They raised their family in New Canaan, Conn., and retired to York in 1973.

As a member of the Harborside Garden Club of Kittery, she was treasurer for 14 years and parliamentarian of the organization. With her expertise in flowers and gardening, she played a significant role in civic and community contributions, attending numerous district and state conventions. She was also an active member of the Old York Garden Club.

Mrs. Hedin was an avid golfer and a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club. She co-chaired the York Ladies Golf Association Tournament for two years and participated in many golfing events. In addition, she was a trustee of the York Public Library.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Cheryl Hedin Bowman and her husband Craig of Summit, N.J. Eric Hedin and his wife Linda Canterbury of Chester, Conn., and York, and Kristina Hedin Goldsmith and her husband Steve of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren, Ian, Katie and Sarah Bowman, Will and Eric Hedin, Cameron and Alison Goldsmith; her sister, Patricia Guiler Adams of Kennebunk; and two nephews, George Bowker of Merrimack, N.H., and Robert Guiler Bowker of Scarborough.

Graveside services were held Saturday in the First Parish Cemetery, York, with a reception following. Memorial donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy, The Harborside Garden Club of Kittery or to the Old York Garden Club. Arrangements are by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Herbert H. Newton

Herbert H. Newton, 70, of 17 Old Mast Road, York, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born on Oct. 17, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Herbert H. and Loretto (Hubbard) Newton.

He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.

He worked as a lithographer for the Naval Printing and Publication Services at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

He had moved to York from Hicksville, Long Island, in 1981. He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York. He was an avid boater and a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club, Navy Yacht Club, Power Squadron and the South Shore Power Squadron of Long Island. He spent his winters in Clearwater, Fla.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Therese E. (Murphy) Newton, who died in 1996.

He is survived by his wife Aline (Donovan) Newton of York; his son, Charles B. Newton of Islip, N.Y.; four daughters, Jude E. Newton of Islip, N.Y., Therese E. DiDiego and her husband Joseph, and Victoria J. Brunning and her husband Thomas, all of Warner Robins, Ga., and Claire E. McNeil and her husband John of East Islip, N.Y; his sister Loretto Dobbins of Wantagh, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 29, in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York, with Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, N.H. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Attn. Memorial/Honor Program FH, One St. Jude Bldg., P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38148-0552.

Captain Richard David Jansen

Captain Richard David Jansen, USMS of 613 Cottonwood Court, Woodlake Country Club, Vass, N.C., formerly of York, died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home, Fayetteville, N.C.

Captain Jansen was born in New York City on Aug. 7, 1927, to the late Caroline Louise Kavanaugh Jansen and Charles Jansen. He was educated in New York City and Garrison, N.Y., until he joined the U.S. Maritime Service early in World War II at age 16.

During the war years, Captain Jansen served in the Middle East and European theaters. He continued at sea after the war, rising in rank to master mariner at the age of 29. At the time of his retirement in 1989, he was captain of MV Endurance for Sea-Land Corporation. Among his many accomplishments during his shipping years was his contribution to the implementation of the "Computer Aboard Ship" Program for Sea-Land. He also participated in the conversion to container shipping pioneered by Sea-Land Corporation.

Captain Jansen moved to Woodlake in 1993 where he served on the board of the Property Owners Association. He was also a member of the Master, Mates, and Pilots Union, The Council of American Master Mariners, and the American Legion.

Captain Jansen is survived by his wife, Sylvia Batchelder Jansen; a daughter, Corrie Jansen of San Bernardino, Calif.; a son Richard D. Jansen Jr., of Mountain Home, Ark.; two brothers, Raymond C. Jansen of Barefoot Bay, Fla. and George Jansen of Warrenton, Va.; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two stepchildren, Winston Wu of Beaverton, Ore. and Charlene Wu of Taiwan.

Captain Jansen's remains have been donated to the Duke University Udall Parkinson's Disease Research Center.

Elaine K. Weare

Elaine K. Weare, 81, of Cape Neddick and of Crystal River, Fla., died July 23, 2002, at the Cypress Cove Care Center, Crystal River, Fla.

She was born Aug. 25, 1920, to Navy Rear Adm. Herbert B. Knowles and Helen K. Knowles in Baltimore, Md. She spent part of her youth in Tsing Tao, China, a place that permanently embedded a love of the Orient within her.

She had her own gift shop and antique business, specializing in Oriental art. She was a member of the Garden Club of Citrus County. She was of the Baha'i faith.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold F. Weare, of Cape Neddick and Crystal River, Fla.; two daughters, Jacqueline Ballou Sullivan of Norwood, Mass., and Curry Ander of Freeport; two grandchildren, Melissa and Daniel Sullivan; and three stepchildren, Bryan, Maret and Christopher Weare.

Funeral services were held at the Wilder Funeral Home in Crystal River, Fla. She is buried at the Fountains Memorial Park in Homosassa, Fla.

Earl T. Bryant

Earl T. Bryant, 81, of 36 Shore Road, York Beach, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born on March 10, 1921 in St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada the son of George and Edna M. (Lovell) Bryant.

He was a graduate of the University of Michigan High School in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Mr. Bryant served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient.

He was employed by New England Telephone for 30 years, retiring in 1977 as assistant state plant manager.

He was a trustee of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and a member of St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge. Mr. Bryant enjoyed lobstering, woodworking and was an avid hunter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Freeman Bryant, who died Oct. 6, 1999.

Survivors include one son, Robert W. Bryant and his wife, Judith of Cape Neddick; one daughter, Donna Shepheard and her husband, Frank of York Beach; one sister, Jean Steidel of Tustin, Calif., and two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Heart Health Institute, 15 Hospital Dr., York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.
