Nancy Charles Cavanaugh

Nancy Charles Cavanaugh, known for her poise and grace, passed peacefully in her beloved Beach House in York Beach, on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002. She was surrounded by the large and loving family that she created and nurtured with her husband of 54 years, Thomas F. Cavanaugh.

Her six children, Brenda Cavanaugh, Thomas Cavanaugh Jr., Michael Cavanaugh, James Cavanaugh, Jill Knowles and her husband, David, and Nancy Lou Buciak and her husband Eric, as well as her nine grandchildren, Dick Genest, Sean and Christian Doherty, Brenna Taccetta, Caitlin Cavanaugh, Davis and Dana Knowles, and Erica and Cayleigh Buciak, and her three great-grandchildren, Calli Genest, Finnegan Doherty, and Lillian Taccetta, surrounded and embraced her as she journeyed to join her father and mother, Lawrence Charles and Doris Craig.

Nancy was born in 1927 in Franklin, N.H. Even as a young girl, she captured everyone's attention with her elegance and style. She graduated from Central High School in 1945, and went on to attend Hesser Business College.

Nancy was also a member of the Elliot Hospital Jr. Associates.

Nancy's strawberry blond hair and regal posture captured Tom's heart in 1946. The two were married on Feb. 7, 1948 in Manchester, N.H. They made their home in Manchester where Tom was the President of Cavanaugh Bros. Motors.

They were the third generation to spend summers with their ever-growing family at the Cavanaugh Beach House in York Beach. Over the years, Nancy became a familiar and appreciated symbol of life in York Beach. Anyone and everyone who came to town was sure to see her swinging on her wicker porch swing. Nancy spent most of her time at the Beach House filling her home and family with love and warmth. When Tom retired in 1991, he and Nancy made York Beach their permanent summer home.

Nancy was an extremely active and energetic woman. She was frequently seen cruising the boardwalk on her bicycle and she was a long time member of the Cape Neddick Country Club where she won many awards in the Women's Golf League. Nancy was also an avid skier and swimmer.

She was a communicant of Star of the Sea Church of York Beach.

Nancy and Tom spent their winters on St. Croix, U.S.V.I., where Nancy truly indulged in her passion for golf and swimming. On Feb. 27, 1993, while golfing on the Reef Golf Course in St. Croix, Nancy hit a hole-in-one, an achievement that most golfers only dream of.

Nancy was admired everywhere she went. There was nary a person on the island who did not know the beautiful Mrs. Cavanaugh who was famous for wearing a red hibiscus flower in her hair.

Nancy left her family with a legacy of love, kindness and joy that is too enormous for words, too powerful for adequate expression, and so generous that a lifetime of thanks could not even begin to repay their debt to her.

Those fortunate enough to have been touched by Nancy were made better people by simply knowing her. Her generous heart and soul will be greatly missed, but always remembered by her family and friends.
