Robert M. Grover

Robert Morris Grover, 79, of Hadley, Mass., passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Cooley Dickinson Hospital, Northampton, Mass., after a brief illness.

He was born in York, Oct. 26, 1922, the son of the late William and Helen (Morris) Grover.

He attended York High School, graduating in 1939, and was a 1943 graduate of the University of Vermont.

During World War II, Mr. Grover served with the U.S. Navy Corps of Engineers (Seabees). He was county agricultural agent for Somerset County Extension Service from 1946 to 1954, and from 1954 to 1958, he served as supervisor for White’s Poultry Farm and Hatchery in Skowhegan. He worked a second time as county extension agent from 1956 to 1958 in eastern Massachusetts, and in 1958 took an assignment as professor of poultry science at the University of Massachusetts, where he remained until retirement in 1979.

Mr. Grover was an active member during his life in the Masons, the Grange, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, and the Amherst Country Club. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed fishing and spending time with this children and grandchildren. For 20 years following retirement, he wrote a weekly column in the United Cooperative Farms Newsletter.

He traveled extensively with his wife, Avis, in both the United States and abroad, crossing the country frequently in their travel trailer. In retirement, they spent summers in Hadley and wintered in Venice, Fla.

He was well respected in agricultural circles, receiving distinguished service awards from the Massachusetts Poultry Association and outstanding service award from the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts.

He is survived by his wife, Avis (Anderson) Grover, whom he married Sept. 19, 1948; three children, Marilyn Wax of London, England, Richard Grover of Portland, and Bruce Grover of New Orleans; and five grandchildren, Jason, Kathryn, Christine, Michael and Jessica.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at the North Hadley Congregational Church. Private burial will be in York. Memorial donations may be made to the church at 243 River Drive, North Hadley, MA 01035.

Anstress ‘Anne’ C. Swain

Anstress ‘Anne’ C. Swain, 88, of 26 Pudding Lane, York, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at York Hospital.

She was born on May 31, 1914, in Bath, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Sheldon) Larrabee and attended Bath schools.

Mrs. Swain graduated from the Bath Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She moved to York in 1937 and worked as a nurse at the old York Hospital and was a private duty nurse in the York area.

Mrs. Swain was a member of the York Street Baptist Church for 62 years. She had served as church deaconess and Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Keenagers.cq

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, crossword puzzles and speding time with her family.

She was predeceased by her brother, Walter Larrabee.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Trafton M. Swain, of York; one son, Marvin Swain and his wife, Deborah, of York; a sister, Emily McMann of Bath; three grandchildren, Amy Swain Burley and her husband, Robert, Heather Adams Henson and her husband, Christian, and Lisa Anne Swain; three great-grandchildren, Justin and Amelia Burley and Emma Henson; six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Monday in the York Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Valmore Vigue officiated. Interment was private in the First Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the York Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 61 York St., York, ME 03909. Arrangements by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Marjorie G. Worstall

Marjorie G. Worstall, 98, formerly of York, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, N.H.

She was born on July 15, 1904, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Frank and Florence (Golden) Voelker. She was a graduate of Lansdowne (Pa.) High School and attended Swarthmore College.

Mrs. Worstall had formerly resided in Lansdowne. She had lived in Canadensis, Pa., for 25 years, and in York for nine years. She was a member of Fair View Presbyterian Church of Fountain Inn, S.C. When she resided in Lansdowne, she was a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Lansdowne. She dedicated her life to helping her family and friends and enjoyed time wiuth her family.

She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, E. Lawrence Worstall, Sr., who died in 1988.

Survivors include her son, the Rev. Edwin "Ned" L. Worstall Jr., of Rock Hill, S.C.; one daughter, Dorie Cheney Button of York; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. Visiting is one hour before the funeral. Interment will be in Drexel Hill, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edgewood Centre Recreation Dept., 928 South St., Portsmouth, N.H. 03801.

Thelma Perkins Adjutant

Thelma Perkins Adjutant, 87, of School Street, Ogunquit, wife of Linwood G. Adjutant, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at the York Harbor Health Care Center at Sentry Hill after a brief illness.

She was born April 6, 1915, in York, the daughter of Sidney and Effie (Roberson) Perkins and graduated from Wells High School.

After graduating from beauty school, Mrs. Adjutant established Thelma’s Beauty Parlor at her residence. For many years she was well-known in the area for Thelma’s Yarn Shop, which was also located at her home. She was married for 63 years to her husband, Linwood, and they lived across the street from the home where she was raised.

She was a member and very active in the York/Ogunquit Methodist Church. She was a great cook and an avid bridge player with membership in many local bridge clubs. In later life, she and her husband enjoyed traveling and sightseeing across the country and abroad.

Mrs. Adjutant was predeceased by her brother, Archer Perkins.

She is survived by her husband, Linwood Gordon Adjutant of Ogunquit and York; two sisters-in-law, Patricia Langille of York and Mavis Wilson of South Portland; a brother-in-law, Clayton Adjutant of York Beach; many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Tuesday in Ocean View Cemetery, Wells. Family flowers only. memorial donations may be made in her memory to one’s charity of choices. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Kathryn S. Young

Kathryn S. Young, formerly of York Harbor, died at her home in Wilmington, N.C., on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at the age of 100. She was born on Oct. 20, 1901.

Mrs. Young resided in York Harbor from 1977 until her recent move to North Carolina. For many years, she was very active in the York Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers and the York Senior Center. She was an accomplished artist and loved to cook and travel.

Surviving are her children, Marianne V. Lindquist of York; Thomas H. van Arsdale of Wilmington, and Frank J. van Arsdale of the Philippines; 11 grandchildren, including Heidi Lindquist Bailey of York, and Debbie Lindquist of Patomic Falls, Va., and 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at St. James Episcopal Parish in Wilmington on Sept. 23. Interment occurred on Sept. 25, at the family gravesite in Rahway cemetery in Rahway, N.J.

Philip F. Adams

Philip F. Adams, 64, of 650 Route 1, York, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at York Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1937 in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of Philip H. "Bing" and Mary (O'Brien) Adams of Hartley Farm Road in Kittery.

Philip was an adventurer of life who lived to fly in his Lake Amphibian Aircraft and loved to be with his wife and family at his camp in the central Maine woods over the mountain from Moosehead. He always looked on the brighter side of life with enthusiasm and for the possibilities that would lie ahead.

He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed going fishing with them. Among his adventures were fishing in Labrador, Fla. and traveling to see his children in California, Florida and Nevada. He was a square dance caller for 38 years and was known to many as "Maine's Singing Caller." Everything he did was done with zest for life. He was the oldest of 14 children.

From 1965 to 1986 he owned and operated the Adams Accounting Firm in Portsmouth, N.H. In 1986, Phil along with his brothers Gary and Kim and nephew Kevin, purchased the Kittery Trading Post from their younger brother, Kevin O. Adams. After retiring in 1988, he and his wife traveled and thoroughly enjoyed life.

Mr. Adams was predeceased by his father, Philip H. Adams and by two brothers, Francis and Kevin Adams.

Survivors include his loving and caring wife of 30 years, Elaine Rose (Theriault) Adams of York; his mother, Mary F. Adams of Kittery; he had six daughters and two sons and 10 grandchildren, of them are Gina Adams and her two sons, Chad and Beau Carson of York, Nancy and her husband, Matt Rovnak and their two daughters, Abigail and Amanda of South Berwick, Teresa and David Lever of North Carolina, Misty and Brian Ellis of Sarasota, Fla., Laurie and Kevin Evans and their two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie Hamel of Nevada, Terri Wheeler of Nevada, Phil and Sandy Adams and their two children, Samantha and Clay of Nevada, Paul and Kathy Adams and their two children, Krista and John of Nevada; siblings include Gary T. Adams of Kittery and Punta Gorda, Fla., Carol Loring of Orlando, Fla., Sherry Hollingsworth of Lake Wales, Fla., Mary Catalino of York, Janice Grogan of Eliot, Lisa Adams of Mexico City, Mexico, Mark Adams of South Berwick, Chris Adams of Kittery, Kim Adams of Kittery, Maureen Hutchinson of Miami, Fla. and Steve Adams of Gorham.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 8 in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, New England Chapter, 495 Old Conn. Path, Suite 220, Framingham, MA 01701.

Maryann (Demers) Janelle

Maryann (Demers) Janelle, 68, of York Beach and a winter resident of Lady Lake, Fla., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, as a result of an automobile accident in Florida.

Born in Dover, N.H. on Jan. 1, 1934 the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Ayer) Demers, she was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary School in Dover. She was a former longtime resident of Dover and moved to York Beach in 1976.

She was a communicant of St. Christopher by-the-Sea Church.

In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting, and giving her homemade goods to family, friends and charities.

Before her retirement she was a longtime employee of the former Merchants Bank and the Seacoast Savings Bank in Dover.

She is survived by her husband Leo Robert "Bob" Janelle, whom she married in 1955; a daughter, Michelle Warner of Windham, a son, Jody L. Janelle of Newton, Mass.; two granddaughters, Alexandra Gagnon and Kaleigh Warner; a sister, Mrs. Nick (Helen) Xenos of Lady Lake, and nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family, with burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Dover.

James W. Meyer

James W. Meyer, 81, of Middleton Road, New Durham, N.H. died early Friday morning May 3, 2002, at Langdon Place, Dover, N.H.

Born May 22, 1920 in Rhineland, Mo., he was the son of the late Julius C. and Laura (Wagner) Meyer. He had resided in New Durham since 1980, having previously resided in Lincoln, Mass. from 1952 to 1980.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He had a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Wisconsin and a master's degree from Dartmouth College.

A retired physicist, he was employed at the Lincoln Laboratory at MIT from 1952 to 1980.

He was a member emeritus of the American Physics Society and a member emeritus of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

A former selectman for the town of New Durham, he was a past president of Friends of the New Durham Public Library and a former chairman of the Study Committee for the New Durham Public Library. Also he was a member of the New Durham Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife, Carol (Hamre) Meyer of New Durham; four daughters, Sue and her husband, Steve Lundy of Colchester, Vt., Sara Meyer of Minneapolis, Minn., Sandra and her husband, Ben Lovell of York, and Sharon and her husband, Rene Bourne of Williston, Vt.; four grandchildren, Jamien and Eric Lundy, Cara and Adam Lovell; a niece, Julia Meyer Sheets; a brother-in-law, Robert, and his wife, Eleanor Hamre; nieces and nephews, Heather, Carla, Robin, Austin and Mareta.

He was predeceased by his brother Donald and his brother's wife, Patricia Meyer.

A memorial Mass was held on Monday, May 6 at St. Peter's Church, Farmington, N.H. Interment will be held at a later date in the Durgin cemetery at the family farm in New Durham. Arrangements are in the care of C.E. Peaslee and Son Funeral Home, 32 Central St., Farmington, N.H. 03835.

Estelle V. Roberge

Estelle V. Roberge, 90, of East Haddam, Conn., and formerly of Stratford, Conn., and York, passed away Monday, July 1, 2002, at St. Joseph's Manor in Trumbull, Conn.

Born Sept. 2, 1911 in Holyoke, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Ida (Duval) Garnett.

In 1930, she wed Lionel C. Roberge in Bridgeport, Conn. Together they operated Estelle's Antiques in both Connecticut and Maine.

She had an avid love of antiquing and gardening, which she stayed active with well into her late 80s.

Survivors include two children: Garnet and her husband, Marc Venables of Hyannis, Mass., and Lionel, and his wife Cecilia Roberge of Monroe, Conn.; a special son-in-law, Alvah, and wife Iris Russell of Glastonbury, Conn.; six grandchildren, Lee and Jeffery Russell, Dianna and Robert Roberge, and Michael and Brian Venables; and five great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1993, and by a daughter, Dora Russell, in 1964.

Private burial will be in St. Bridget of Kildare Cemetery, Moodus, Conn. Memorial contributions may be made to the East Haddam Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 17, Moodus, CT 06469; Middlesex Hospital VNA, Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457; or St. Joseph's Manor, 6448 Main St., Trumbull, CT 06611.
