Raymond Henry Bone

Raymond Henry Bone, 86, of Organug Road, York, and husband of Roxy Diane (Ellis) Bone died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born in York, May 23, 1916, son of William and Mabel (Davis) Bone. He graduated from York High School.

Mr. Bone worked as an electrician at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard from 1942 to 1962. He was always proud of the work he did on the submarines.

Being born in York and living here, Mr. Bone considered himself to be a "True Mainer." This was of great amusement to himself, family and friends. He loved animals and spent many hours trying to protect the birds and bird feeders from the squirrels. He never succeeded in this endeavor, but always kept trying to create the perfect squirrel-proof bird feeder.

He was an avid rock collector and had a large mineral rock collection. He enjoyed doing genealogy work. He often said that he and his wife, Roxy, had two fur "children" together, their dogs, Sir Thibodeau "Tibby" and Susi.

Mr. Bone was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Yess Bone, who died in 1977, and by a sister, Gertrude Blaisdell.

He is survived by his wife, Roxy Diane (Ellis) Bone of York; two sons, Dennis M. and his wife, Elaine Bone of Tewksbury, Mass., and David B. and his wife, Anne Bone of Stockbridge, Mass.; a stepson, Kenneth Raymond Lagasse of Portsmouth, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Wendy A. and her husband, Ricky Felch of South Berwick, and Sherrie L. and her husband, James Frisone of Windham, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one niece.

Interment will be private. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Welfare Society, P.O. Box 43, West Kennebunk, ME 04094.

Shirley A. (Sam) McGowan

It is said in some cultures that the parting of a great spirit is marked by a storm. On Oct. 16, 2002, the wind blew the sea to froth and the sky shed tears of fury as Shirley Ann McGowan (Sam), 55, of Ogunquit, passed on after a heroic battle with cancer.

Sam was born in 1947 in Woburn, Mass., to Weldon and Gladys Huckins. Weldon (Huck) still blesses us with his presence while Gladys and Sam are together once again in their garden in the sky. Her two sisters, Betty Ingersoll and Diane Desalvo, who were her lifelong friends and whose love and support during her illness was integral in helping her to pass in peace, complete their family.

Sam was married for 33 years to her first love and best friend, Paul McGowan. Their love brought to life Erin Kelly (McGowan) Haye, and Cory Weldon McGowan. Her family grew in joy and strength with the addition of Erin’s husband, Rick Haye, and their children, Alexandrea and Cassandra. Sam was most motivated in her struggle for life by the hope of spending more time with her grandchildren, whom she cherished. They have all enjoyed living in Ogunquit for the past five years, and many summers prior.

Second only to her family was Sam’s dedication to her work as a teacher and educator for almost 30 years in Townsend, Groton, Lunenberg and North Andover, Mass. Her passion for health education and quiet persistence for positive change in the education system affected the lives of her students and colleagues alike.

Sam moved to Ogunquit in 1997, and when she was not with her family or working, she shared her time with friends, whom she held close to her heart. Whether taking longs walks along Ogunquit Beach or the Marginal Way, eating lobster, or shopping for hours, Sam brought to her friendships an open heart and unending thoughtfulness.

Sam cultivated beauty in a world that sorely needs it. Her kind nature seemed to touch everyone she met. Her selflessness, unconditional love, and humility are missed, but her spirit lives on in all those who were a part of her life.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate Sam McGowan’s life on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Ogunquit Baptist Church on Shore Road across from the library. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sam McGowan Health Education Fund. Checks should be made to the Town of North Andover, with the name of the fund written in the comments section. Mail attn.: Susan Nicholson, Principal, North Andover High School, 675 Chickering Road, North Andover, MA 01845.
