Rose Palumbo

Rose Palumbo, of 2 Victoria Court, Sentry Hill, York Harbor, formerly of Medford, Mass., passed away Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at York Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was born in Riesi, Italy, on July 28, 1909, the daughter of Luigi and Concetta (Rindone) Napolitano, and immigrated to Boston when she was 3 years old. Rose grew up in Everett, Mass., and was a resident of Medford from 1943 until moving to Sentry Hill in March 2001.

Rose was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church of Medford. She was active in the Italian-American and Forever Young Clubs at the Medford Senior Center. She loved music and was an avid dancer well into her 80s.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael A. Palumbo; a sister, Theresa Napolitano, and a son-in-law, James Mercer.

Survivors include her son, Michael V. Palumbo and his wife, Theresa, of York; two daughters, Janet Mercer of Malden, Mass., and Donna Piwonski and her husband, Ronald, of York; a brother, Philip Napolitano of Everett, Mass.; three sisters, Sarah Napolitano, Josephine Hopkins and Viola Mancuso, all of Everett, Mass.; one granddaughter, Joan Mercer of Malden: nine grandsons, James and John Mercer of Malden, Robert Mercer of Peabody, Richard Mercer of Everett, Mark Mercer of Woburn, Ronald Piwonski of New London, Conn., Jonathan and Joseph Piwonski of York, and David Piwonski of Thornton, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, David Mercer, Janelle Mercer and Rachel Mercer; several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday in St. Christopher Church, York, with a reception for family and friends following. Interment was held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Myron M. ‘Buster’ Thayer

Myron M. "Buster" Thayer, 72, of Scituate Road, York, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at York Hospital, from heart failure.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., the son of Myron F. and Doratha (Meader) Thayer and was a 1947 graduate of Newton (Mass.) High School.

He attended Boston College from 1947 to 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot from 1949 to 1954 and retired from the Reserves as a Commander in 1971. He graduated from U-Mass at Amherst in 1958.

Mr. Thayer was employed as a metallurgist at Ion Physics in Burlington, Mass.; W.H. Nichols/Parker Hannifin in Waltham, Mass. and Fluid Power in Southborough, Mass., retiring in 1995. He had resided in Reading, Mass., for many years, moving to York in 1995.

Buster was a member of the Union Congregational Church in York Beach, where he enjoyed doing volunteer work. He was an avid exerciser and health enthusiast and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Evelyn (Matthews) Thayer of York; one daughter, Deborah Hernandez and her husband, Sergio, of San Antonio, Texas; four sons, Mark Thayer and his wife, Andrea, of South Hamilton, Mass., Scott Thayer and his wife, Debra, of Reading, Mass., Trevor Thayer and his wife, Lori, of Kittery, and Glenn Thayer and his wife, Brenda, of Plymouth, Mass.; thirteen grandchildren.

A funeral was held Thursday in the Union Congregational Church of York Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Community Food Pantry, P.O. Box 243, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

P. Bruce Atkinson

P. Bruce Atkinson, 90, of Eureka Avenue, York Harbor, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at his residence.

He was born in Buxton, Nov. 29, 1911, son of Thomas G. and Ethel (Ilsley) Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson graduated from the Samuel D. Hanson High School in Buxton in 1929.

Mr. Atkinson began his career with the Cumberland County Power and Light Company and worked out of the Biddeford Office for many years. He retired after 38 years of service as a district line supervisor for Central Maine Power in December, 1975. He moved here from Bar Mills in 1963.

He especially enjoyed visiting his family and their visits to his home in York Harbor. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Atkinson was predeceased by his wife, Annabelle (MacEachern) Atkinson, who died Oct. 23, 1992, and by a sister, Christine Sands.

Survivors include his son, Philip B. and his wife, Joan Atkinson, of Hollis Center, a daughter, Andrea M. and her husband, Roscoe York, of Medway; a brother, Keith I. Atkinson of Buxton; a sister, Hildreth Baade of Cape Elizabeth; eight grandchildren, Ida Atkinson Stevens of Standish, Mary Merchant of Dover-Foxcroft, Sarah LeBlanc of Dayton, Ethel Atkinson of Sebago Lake, Gordon Atkinson of Buxton, Rachel Bartlett of Tupper Falls, N.Y., Rebecca York of Keene, N.H., and Ruth Yorke of Medway; four great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, N.E. Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Florence B. Henry

Florence B. Henry, 96, of Roaring Rock Point Road, York Harbor, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at her residence.

She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., and attended Grover Cleveland High School in New York.

Mrs. Henry was a statistical and technical typist. She had been employed by the Smith-Corona Typewriter Company, Sperry-Rand Corporation and American Machine and Foundry in Connecticut. Mrs. Henry had been a technical data typist for the Apollo Space Project.

She and her late husband, Anthony Henry, fulfilled a lifelong dream to retire to York, and they moved here from New Jersey in 1970.

Mrs. Henry was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. She believed in the American political process and voted in every election. She was an avid cook and baker, enjoying many hours in her kitchen. Most of all, she was a loving parent, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony P. Henry, who died Jan. 10, 2002, and by her sister, Dorothy Hrewniak, of Somerville, N.J., who died in 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann and her husband, Terry Powley of New Jersey, and Paulette and her husband, Brian Chernack of York Harbor; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Powley and Paul Powley, both of New Jersey, William Powley of Maine, Loren McCabe of New Hampshire, and Casandra Chernack of Kittery; two great-grandchildren, Colin and Claire McCabe of New Hampshire.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment in First Parish Cemetery. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York.

Daniel Duane Sowerby

Daniel Duane Sowerby, 50, of York Harbor, died Nov. 16, 2002, at York Hospital. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend.

He was born May 8, 1952, the fifth son of Thomas Y. and Vera M. (Calhoun) Sowerby of York Harbor. Dan attended York High School, where he was a star football player and all-around athlete. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1976.

After many years in the nursing home business, Dan and his wife Pamela purchased and operated the Quarterdeck Restaurant in Kittery.

Dan was an avid hunter and was a life member of Safari Club International and the NRA. He was also an avid fisherman, PADI Dive Master, and held a U.S. Coast Guard license as a Marine Captain for vessels up to 100 tons.

Dan is survived by his wife of 29 years, Pamela Azorsky of York Harbor; a daughter, Mandy Katherine Sowerby of Bangor; two sons, Max David Sowerby and Brett Daniel Sowerby of York Harbor; brothers Doyle T. Sowerby and his wife, Elaine, of York Harbor, Dr. Delbert C. Sowerby and wife, Helen, of Redding, Calif., David M. Sowerby and his wife, Suzanne, of York, and Dwight D. Sowerby and his wife, Cindy, of Lyndeborough, N.H.; two aunts, Dorothy Case of Bobcajeon, Ontario, Canada, and Katherine Walsh of York Harbor.

Funeral services were held at the First Parish Congregational Church in York on Tuesday, Nov. 19. If desired, charitable contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.

Benedetto J. Varano

Benedetto (Ben) J. Varano, 66, of Lexington, Mass., died Feb. 1, 2002, in Kennebunk.

Born Oct. 20, 1935 in Brockton, Mass., the son of the late James P. and Mary (Frasca) Varano, he was raised and educated in Lexington. He lived in Chelmsford, Mass. for 20 years, and in the Wells/Kennebunk area for 10 years.

Mr. Varano was employed at Purity Supreme, Inc. for more than 20 years, and was currently employed at West Lynn Creamery, Lynn, Mass.

He was a former member of the Chelmsford Board of Appeals, Chelmsford Booster Club, and was a Chelmsford Little League umpire.

He enjoyed music, local travel in New England (the Maine coast and New Hampshire lakes and mountains), an avid football fan, spending time with children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Andrea H. and her husband, Matthew McCann, Jennifer and her husband, Michael Baraldi, Stephen M. and his wife, Lisa Varano; grandchildren Judith and Maria Varano, and Kristina, Michael and Elizabeth Baraldi; two uncles, Rocco and Anthony Frasca; an aunt, Sue Kozei; and close friend Theresa Sylvain.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Douglass Funeral Home, 41 Worthen Road, Lexington. Interment will be held at Westview Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Chelmsford All Sports Booster Club, P.O. Box 91, Chelmsford, MA 01824.

Lloyd D. Hatfield

Lloyd D. Hatfield, 88, of Organug Road, York, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.

He was born Nov. 4, 1913 in Brewer, the son of Clifford and Olive Hatfield. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1931, Castine Normal School in 1933 and the University of Maine in 1937 with a bachelor's degree.

He was drafted into the Army in World War II, served in the Pacific returning as a captain. Following the war he received his master's degree in education from the University of Maine and was later selected as a John Hay Fellow at Bennington College, Vermont.

He taught school at the elementary and high school level; he was also an instructor at Castine Normal School. He was principal at George Stevens Academy (Blue Hill) and Berwick High School; assistant superintendent at both Berwick and York; and then was superintendent at both York and South Portland.

Mr. Hatfield served on the Maine State Teachers Association Executive Committee and as president in 1969-1970. He was treasurer 1970-1971. He was active in sports, coaching football, basketball and baseball at both high school and college levels, as well as officiating at basketball at both high school and college levels, as well as officiating at basketball and football games for 26 years. One highlight was winning the 1948 Class Championship in basketball.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Beatrice (Giffard) Hatfield; one brother, Barr, and two sisters, Elsie and Margaret.

Surviving are his wife Nina P. (Armstrong) (Adams) Hatfield whom he married in 1960, of York; a stepson, Joe C. Adams and wife Arlene of Rockland; a stepdaughter-in-law, Janice Adams (wife of James, deceased) of Southborough, Mass.; a sister, Kay Parsons and husband Raymond of Brewer; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in the spring at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one's charity of choice.

Lloyd P. Dodge

Lloyd Pillsbury Dodge, 86, of Aldis Lane, York Harbor, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Sentry Hill after a period of failing health.

He was born in Bellmore, N.Y. on March 22, 1915, the son of William C. and Lavinia (Hunt) Dodge.

He was a graduate of Amherst College, Syracuse University and the Yale Law School in 1939.

He was a former resident of Chambersburg, Pa.

Mr. Dodge was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Lorayne V. Dodge, and three children.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Please go online to www.taskerfh.com for information or to sign an online guest book.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorials in his name be made to the charity of one's choice.

William E. Maloney

William E. Maloney, M.D., 84, of York Harbor, died at his home.

Born in Batavia, N.Y., he attended the University of Buffalo Medical School before entering the Navy shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He served as a medical officer for four years aboard the World War I destroyer Zane. The ship ferried Marines ashore in the Pacific.

After the war he took a postgraduate course at Harvard Medical School before taking over a general practice in Lebanon, N.H. After six years in New Hampshire, he entered an anesthesia residency in Connecticut for two years. He then joined a practice at North Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

He retired to York Harbor in 1987.

He loved nature, especially bird-watching and fishing, and had a lifelong interest in and collection of antiques.

He is survived by his wife, Marianne Maloney of York Harbor; a son, William E. Maloney Jr. of Norwalk, Conn.; two daughters, Kathryn M. Ross of York, and Barbara Maloney of Vineyard Haven, Mass.; and three beloved granddaughters, Alexandra Perry Ross, Hayden Maloney and Kelsey Maloney.
