Dominic William Gratta

Dominic William Gratta, 87, of Starboard Lane, York Harbor, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at his residence after a battle with prostate cancer.

He was born in Hull, Mass., the son of Antonio and Josephine (Fulciniti) Gratta. He was a graduate of Hull High School and received a bachelor degree of agricultural sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was a building contractor in Hull, and York, owning and operating the Dominic W. Gratta Construction Company. Mr. Gratta was a key visionary in the building of Cornell University’s Marine Biology Lab on Appledore Island, located in the Isles of Shoals in Kittery.

The story of the laboratory and Mr. Gratta’s 10-year relationship building the laboratory is described in the book "Here’s How … We’ll Do It," written by Dr. John M. Kingsbury in 1991.

Mr. Gratta was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of York. He had also served as the building inspector for York Harbor during the 1960s.

Survivors include his wife, Rachael (Hussey) Gratta of York Harbor; his son, Anthony Gratta of York; and five daughters, Pamela Tucker of Lynn, Mass., Carolyn D’Entremont Sullivan of Concord, N.H., Virginia Gratta of Hampton, N.H., Barbara Pevear of Hampton Falls, N.H. and Deborah Kiernan of Exeter, N.H.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, in the First Parish Congregational Church of York. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Shoals Marine Laboratory, Stimson Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853. Arrangements by the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Kenneth P. Huff

Kenneth P. Huff, 85, of York Street, York, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at York Hospital.

He was born in North Edgecomb on Oct. 30, 1917, the son of Enoch and Stella (Purington) Huff. As a child he moved with his family to Lynnfield, Mass., and attended schools there. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

Kenneth was a captain in the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.

He and his wife, Marguerite (Martin) Huff, made their home in York for the past 16 years, where he loved to play golf.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Huff of York; one son, David T. Martin of York; one daughter, Meredith Toth of Newton Falls, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Mark Wheeler of Westwood, Mass.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, three nieces and two nephews.

Private services will be held in the spring. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Russell A. Marston

Russell A. Marston, 87, of 47 Brave Boat Harbor Road, York, died unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at his residence.

He was born in York on Sept. 6, 1915, the son of Orin T. and Ethel J. (Voudy) Marston. He graduated valedictorian of York High School Class of 1934. During World War II he worked in the Battery Plant at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Mr. Marston had been employed by the York School Department Maintenance Department from 1947 to 1981, retiring with 34 years of service. Following retirement, he continued to work part-time at the York schools.

He was a member of the York Village Fire Department from 1933 to 1977 and had served as fire chief from 1956 to 1971 and from 1972 until 1977. Mr. Marston was made honorary fire chief for life. He had also served on the York Village Budget Committee during the 1950s and 1960s.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Maxie (Greeley) Marston, who died Jan. 3, 1997, and by his daughter, Anita L. Marston, who died June 23, 1995. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Lester, Gordon and Louis Marston, and by a sister, Leila MacDonald.

Survivors include four sons and their wives, Raymond L. and Judith Marston of Kittery Point, Roger W. and Leona Marston of Chester, N.H., Ralph E. and Theresa Marston of Alexandria, Va. and Rodney L. and Holly Marston of Gilmanton, N.H.; one daughter, Mrs. Lee (Charlotte I.) Tewksbury of York; one sister, Hazel Hodge of York; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral was held Saturday, Dec. 28, in the First Parish Congregational Church, York St., York, with Interment in the First Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Firemen’s Assoc., 1 Firehouse Dr., York, ME 03909 or the York Volunteer Ambulance Assoc., P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909.

Anthony J. "Joe" Terrasi

Anthony J. "Joe" Terrasi, 65, of York Beach, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at the Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. He was the husband of Elaine (Johnston) Terrasi, to whom he was married for 44 years.

He was born in Maynard, Mass., the son of the late Espedito and Emily (Maria) Terrasi, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Terrasi was a retired operations manager for the former ITEK in Lexington, Mass., where he was employed for 33 years. He lived most of his life in Maynard, and was a member of the Maynard Lodge of Elks. Mr. Terrasi had summered in York Beach for many years, and moved permanently a little over a year ago. He and his wife also enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Joanne, and her husband, Peter Stropparo of West Newbury, Mass.; a son, Joseph, and his wife, Janet Nottingham Terrasi of Worcester, Mass.; a grandson, A. Quinn Stropparo; a brother, Antonio Terrasi of Maynard; three sisters, Marion Bedard of Maynard, and Frances "Jean" Davis and Madeline "Terry" Higgins, both of Hudson, Mass., and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan 2. at 9 a.m. in St. Bridget Church, Maynard, with burial following in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard. Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 1 from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Mass. Ave., Acton. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the National Alliance for Autism Research, 99 Wall St., Research Park, Princeton, NJ 08540 or at www.naar.org.

David Allen Bedell

David Allen Bedell, 58, of Scotland Bridge Road, York, husband of Beverly A. (Rowland) Bedell, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 at York Hospital.

He was born Jan. 3, 1945, in Newington, N.H., son of Foster and Violet (Hoyt) Bedell.

Mr. Bedell served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He worked as a woods craftsman and shipwright at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 24 years, retiring six years ago.

He enjoyed the outdoors and spent many enjoyable hours camping, fishing, fresh and saltwater boating. He and his family especially enjoyed their campsite at the Lakeside Pines Campground in Bridgton. He also enjoyed baby-sitting for his three grandchildren, Alec, Ryan and Matthew.

Mr. Bedell was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2788 in York.

He was predeceased by his father and two brothers, Foster Daniel Bedell and Roland Bedell.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Beverly Ann, of York; his mother, Violet Elcser of Gardiner; a son, David S. Bedell, of Newburyport, Mass.; a daughter, Lisa M. Bedell-Cheever of North Berwick; two brothers, John W. Bedell of Rochester, N.H. and Ronald Bedell of Gardiner; three grandchildren, Alec and Ryan Turpin, and Matthew Cheever, all of North Berwick; many stepbrothers, stepsisters, half brothers and half sisters.

Services with the Elks Lodge were held Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York, with private Interment . Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the ME Children Cancer Program, c/o the York Elks, P.O. Box 711, York, ME 03909.

Russell B. Stannard

Russell B. Stannard, 82, of Shore Road, Cape Neddick, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at York Hospital.

He was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Bronxville, N.Y., the son of James Howard and Marjorie (Baskin) Stannard. He graduated from the Middlesex School in Concord, Mass., and received a bachelor of science degree from Harvard University in 1943. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Stannard was a vice president for CIT Financial in New York City, retiring in 1970. He moved here in 1971 from Ossining, New York. He had operated a landscaping business in the Cape Neddick area for many years.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Shore Road. he had played football for Harvard University and had been inducted in the Middlesex School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.

Mr. Stannard was predeceased by his wife, Janet (Kuntz) Stannard who died April 15, 2001, a brother, James and a sister, Virginia Bresnahan. Survivors include a nephew, Dennis Bresnahan of Holly Hill, S.C., and a sister-in-law, Valeria Symes of Newport Beach, Calif.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

William E. Mahoney

William E. Mahoney, 90, of 16 Atlantic Ave., York Beach, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, at York Hospital.

He was born Feb. 4, 1912, in Cambridge, Mass., the son of Edmund M. and Agnes (Mullen) Mahoney and was a graduate of Arlington (Mass.) High School. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Mahoney had been a truck driver for Local Teamsters 25 for many years.

He had resided in Everett, Mass., for many years, moving to York Beach more than 26 years ago.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York. He had served as a volunteer for the York Volunteer Ambulance Association and the York Beach Fire Department. Mr. Mahoney has been a member of the American Legion and had volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Kathleen (Kemmitt) Mahoney in 1975. He was also predeceased by a daughter, Dorothy J. Belliveau, who died in 2000; two brothers, James Mahoney Sr., and John Mahoney; three sisters, Edna Carter, Catherine Davis and Gertrude Hutchins.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Dorothy F. (Thompson) Mahoney of York Beach; two sons, William E. Mahoney, Jr., of Florida, and Ronald J. Mahoney of Beverly, Mass.; one daughter, Kathleen Gatto of Tucson, Ariz.; one step-son, Roger Kemmitt of Randolph, Mass.; three step-daughters, Patricia Healey, Hazel Ellis and Dorothy Kemmitt, all of Randolph; one brother, Edmund Mahoney of York; one sister, Agnes McGuiness of Springfield, Mass; 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Friday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Visiting hours will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, at the Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Oncology Dept., 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909, or to the charity of one’s choice.

Frances Belle Ehrig

Frances Belle Ehrig, 90, formerly of Ogunquit, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at the Riverside Rest Home, after a brief illness.

Born on April 16, 1912, in Somersworth, N.H., she was the daughter of Charles and Grace (Adams) Sanborn.

She attended Somersworth schools, and graduated in 1961 from the New Hampshire Technical Institute with her LPN degree. She went on to serve as a nurse at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, N.H., for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the American Pen Women, the Ogunquit Women’s Club, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick.

She began taking art courses at the University of New Hampshire. It was at this time that she discovered her passion for painting and illustrating. She studied under William C. Ehrig, the renowned seascape painter, whom she would later marry. Together they ran the William C. Ehrig gallery from their home on Shore Road in Ogunquit. For many years she spent winters in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she worked as a private nurse.

She continued to paint and teach from her Ogunquit studio well into her 80s. Her paintings reflect her love of the sea, the rugged coastline of Maine, and the subtle variations of light through the passing seasons.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1973.

She is survived by two daughters, Meredith (Ingalls) Williams of York, wife of James Hasty Williams, and Barbara (Ingalls) Landrigan of Concord, N.H., wife of Leo J. Landrigan; seven grandchildren, Laurel Finucan and James Perkins Williams, both of York, David Ehrig Williams of Denver, Co., Rebecca Maxcy of Chicago, Ill., Robert Landrigan of Squantum, Mass., and Michael and James Landrigan, both of Concord, N.H.; and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be held in the summer at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Cape Neddick. Arrangements under the direction of the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Phyllis Fogg

Phyllis Fogg of York, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at the RiverRidge Rehabilitation Center in Kennebunk, after a long illness.

Born in Greenfield, Mass. on June 10, 1923, she was the youngest of nine children to Frank R. and Lula Bardwell Foster.

She was married to the late John F. Fogg of York, and they were married one day short of 50 years when he passed away. She loved her home and family and enjoyed visiting the ocean and birdwatching.

She worked for Abbott Brothers Construction Co. of York as a bookkeeper. She also worked for York High School as a member of the guidance department and also in the school library.

She is survived by her children, Gordon F. Fogg and his wife, Dineas of Shapleigh, Robert G. Fogg and his wife, Donna, of Kittery, Joy Carl and her husband, Richard, of York, Carol Boardman and her husband, Scott, of York Beach; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank R. Foster II and his wife, June, of Bernardston, Mass.; two sisters, Beryl Underwood of Greenfield, Mass., and Kathleen Aiken of Millers Falls, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the First Parish Congregational Church, York. Family flowers only. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to the RiverRidge Rehabilitation Center, 79 Cat Mousam Road, Kennebunk, Maine 04043. Arrangements under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Gunnar Nils Brobeck

Gunnar Nils Brobeck, 80, of 290 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, formerly of Wells, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, in the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, after an illness.

His wife of 46 years, Mary S. (Young) Brobeck died Aug. 6, 1991.

He leaves one son, Kevin Brobeck and his wife, Rosemarie of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Elizabeth Dolan and her husband, John of Lancaster, Mass., and Susan Myette and her husband, Robert of Shirley, Mass.; one sister, Asta Broderick of Blacksburg, Va.; one brother, John Shonbeck of Swanzey, N.H.; four grandchildren, John Dolan of Lancaster, Mass., Peter Myette of Shirley, Mass., and David and Kirsten Brobeck of Princeton, Mass.; a dear friend, Emily Dobie of Kittery; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers.

Mr. Brobeck worked 40 years for Crocker Burbank, Weyerhauser, and James River Paper Companies in Fitchburg, retiring in 1979 after 40 years as a purchasing manager.

He was a veteran of World War II, U.S. Army, participating in the European, African, and Middle Eastern theaters and the Battle of the Bulge as a tank and heavy machinery driver.

He was an avid gardener, with a love for card playing and traveling. While working at the paper mills, he became well-known in Fitchburg for his candlepin bowling prowess, often participating in local and state tournaments. He loved to socialize and be with family and friends and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots.

Mr. Brobeck was born in Malmoe, Sweden, on Sept. 9, 1922, a son of the late Konrad Walfird Leonard and Bothilda (Walcher) Brobeck and came to the United States at the age of 4 and became a naturalized citizen when he was 21. He was a 1939 graduate of Lunenburg High School.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Fitchburg.

Calling hours at the funeral home are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6.
