James J. Childs

James J. Childs, 71, of 2 Old Chases Pond Road, York, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Harbor Home.

He was born on Jan. 31, 1931, in Livermore Falls, the son of Charles P., Sr. and Laura (McElhiney) Childs and was a graduate of York High School. He served as an Army Paratrooper during the Korean War.

Mr. Childs was a pipe fitter and inspector at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the York Street Baptist Church. James was a member of the Masons, the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the (MOLES); Maine Obsolete Auto League. He had wintered in Winter Haven, Fla., for 14 years.

He was predeceased by his father, Charles P. Childs, who died in March 1997, and by a brother, Kenneth L. Childs who died in 1935.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Nichols) Childs of York; his mother, Laura Childs of York; four sons, James, Jr. and Larisa of Franklin, Mass., Kenneth and Debbie of Charleston, S.C., Stephen of Fayetteville, N.C., and John and Shirley of Epping, N.H.; one daughter, Linda and Ray Demers of Lisbon; one step-daughter, Wanda Kezar of North Berwick; four brothers, Charles P. Childs, Jr. of Richardson, Texas, Robert Childs of Bangor, Gerald Childs of Barrington, N.H., and Timothy Childs of Alaska; eight sisters, Patricia Zenger of Portsmouth, N.H., Laura Kincaid of Visalia, Calif., JoAnn Ross of Hermitage, Tenn., Barbara Nasuti of Dover, N.H., Delores Belanger, Sandra Vano and Gail Childs all of York, and Brenda Barstow of Rochester, N.H.; and eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 30, in the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Dr., York or the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York, 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Nathan A. Milbury

Nathan A. Milbury, 89, of York Beach, formerly of Worcester, Mass., and Shrewsbury, Mass., died Feb. 2, 2003, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.

He was born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of the late Rev. Douglas Milbury and the late Gertrude Slipp Milbury. He graduated from Berwick Academy, South Berwick, in 1930, and Bates College, Lewiston, in 1934. He worked for the American Mutual Insurance Company for 40 years until his retirement in 1976. During his years at American Mutual he rose from mail room clerk to vice president and director of management development.

He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, the John Matthew Whittal Lodge AF&AM of Shrewsbury, The Scottish Rite of the Valley of Boston, The Aleppo Temple of Wilmington, Mass., and the Worcester Shrine Club.

After his retirement he was active in the Greendale Retired Men’s Club of Worcester and the United Way of Worcester. He was a board member of the Elder Home Care Services of Central Massachusetts, and he served as a SHINE volunteer. He was also a board member of the Salem Community Corp, the operators of the Briarwood Continuing Care Retirement Community in Worcester, where he and his wife lived for 13 years.

His wife, Doris Kelly Milbury, to whom he was married since 1940, died in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Emilie M. Englund, of York Beach, and his son, Douglas A. Milbury, of Vero Beach, Fla.; three grandsons and two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, gifts should be sent to the Shriners Burn Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Ruth M. O’Brien

Ruth M. O’Brien, 89, formerly of 7 Third Ave., York Beach, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill, with her granddaughter Amy Beth O’Brien at her bedside.

Born in 1913, Ruth was the youngest of 13 children of James A. and Josephine (Kelly) Stuart, both of Boston. A graduate of Dorchester High School, Ruth married Joseph F. O’Brien in 1944. Always a patriot, Ruth joined the war effort by working as a civilian telephone operator during World War II while her husband was overseas. She continued to work as an operator until her retirement.

She was a communicant of Star of the Sea Church in York Beach and was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

A prior resident of Waltham, Mass., Ruth has added to the character of York Beach since 1951 and became a year-round resident in 1968, She loved her home at the Nubble and most enjoyed spending time with her dear friends, gardening, antiquing, keeping abreast of political and current events or reminiscing about the strong and graceful swim strokes she used in the competitions of her youth.

Mrs. O’Brien was predeceased by her husband, Joseph F. O’Brien, who died in 1984. Ruth is survived by her three children, Philip J. O’Brien of Norwalk, Conn., Robert S. O’Brien of York, and Judith Hanley of Waltham, Mass., who will all miss her dearly. Ruth is also the beloved grandmother of Amy Beth O’Brien of Washington, D.C., Kaori Higgins of New York City, N.Y., and Patrick and Ryan Hanley, both of Waltham, Mass.

Ruth will join her late husband, Joe, in peaceful rest in the First Parish cemetery in York.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday in St. Christopher Church, York Street, York. Interment will be in the spring in the First Parish Church Cemetery, York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 238, York, ME 03909.

William Rowe Spaulding

William Spaulding, 87, investment analyst and philanthropist for numerous causes, died Jan 28, 2003, after a brief illness.

Mr. Spaulding, a 10th-generation New Englander and longtime resident of Wakefield, Mass., and Drakes Island, attended North Quincy High School before his adoption by his aunt and uncle at age 16, following his mother’s death. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor of science degree, followed by an MBA from Harvard in 1940.

During World War II, Mr. Spaulding volunteered for service with the 2nd Armored Division, rising to captain and receiving the Bronze Star while seeing action in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy and Germany.

Mr. Spaulding excelled in his financial career, beginning as a trader with Kidder Peabody in New York City and culminating with 15 years of service as an independent director for the Fidelity Group of Mutual Funds in Boston. He also served as chairman for the mutual fund company Century Shares Trust and the chairman and chief executive officer for Wakefield Savings Bank.

Beyond his financial career, Mr. Spaulding devoted substantial time and energy to the community with 42 years of service as director and financial president for the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield. Through this foundation, one of the largest such chapters in the United States, Mr. Spaulding helped to give countless youth of Wakefield the opportunity to attend college. In addition to his work on the Scholarship Foundation, he also served as a trustee of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital and Lakeside cemetery in Wakefield, a trustee and founder of Laudholm Farm Trust’s National Estaurine Research Center in Wells, a member of the Wakefield Planning Board, and became a lifelong contributor to important causes such as the Massachusetts Easter Seals Society. In honor of his service to his home town, Mr. Spaulding and his wife, Gertrude, were named Grand Marshals of the Wakefield Independence Day Parade in 1994.

Not only concerned about local issues, Mr. Spaulding did his part to help foster well-being abroad with visits to Jamaica, South Africa and China as a volunteer for the International Executive Services Corps.

Mr. Spaulding shared 54 years of marriage with his wife, the late Gertrude (Mowry) Spaulding. He is survived by his sons Edward A. of Natick, Mass., and William M. of Arundel; and three grandchildren, Jason, Joy and Shane Spaulding.

His memorial service was held at the First Parish Congregational Church, Wakefield, Sunday, Feb. 2. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Mr. Spaulding’s name may be made to the Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Wakefield, P.O. Box 321, Wakefield, MA 01880.

Dr. Pierre D. Lambert

Dr. Pierre D. Lambert of Needham, Mass., and Ogunquit, passed away Feb. 14, 2003, after a long illness.

He was born Dec. 6, 1921 in Brunswick, the son of Henri and Eveline DeRome Lambert, and brother of the Very Reverend Jacques Lambert, S.M. (deceased) and Clarice Foley of South Harpswell.

Dr. Lambert was a veteran of W.W. II and served at the American Embassy in liberated Paris. He was a Professor Emeritus of Boston College, where he taught for 40 years in the School of Education. He received his doctorate at the University of Iowa and his undergraduate degrees from Boston College.

He was the beloved husband of 58 years to Elizabeth Lambert, beloved father of Susan Lambert of Cranston, R.I., Paul Lambert of South Hadley, Mass. and Jacqueline Quinton of Moody.

An intense family man, he will be missed by his five grandchildren, Andrew and Emily Quinton, Benjamin and Peter Lambert, Lucas Henry, son-in-laws David Henry and Noel Quinton and daughter-in-law Cynthia Lambert.

Dr. Lambert’s life centered on his family, church, Boston College, books, music and, most importantly, teaching. He was a quiet, gentle man.

There will be a memorial mass at Saint Joseph’s Church in Needham on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy in his memory.

Joann C. Pitoniak

Joann C. Pitoniak, 67, of 42 Main St., York Beach, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at York Hospital.

She was born Oct. 24, 1935, in Westfield, Mass., the daughter of Stanley J. and Frances (Bozak) Pasterczyk. She graduated valedictorian of St. Mary’s High School, Westfield, Class of 1953. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1957 of Elm’s College of Chicopee, Mass., receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry education. She later obtained a master’s degree in education from Syracuse University.

Mrs. Pitoniak was a sixth-grade teacher at the Westfield Grammar School for 15 years, and during the early 1980s was a teacher at Gateway School in Huntington, Mass.

Following her teaching career, she obtained a certificate in computer programming from BEI School. She became a computer programmer for Travelers Insurance of Hartford, Conn., working from her home office in York Beach.

She had resided in Westfield and Springfield, Mass. for many years, moving to York Beach nine years ago.

Mrs. Pitoniak was a communicant of St. Christopher-by-the-Sea Church of York and served as a lector. She was a member of the Church Sacristy, Helping Hands and the Church Christmas Fair. She was a member of the Red Hat Society of York. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, knitting and cooking.

She was predeceased by a brother, Walter Pasterczyk.

Survivors include one son, Jerome M. Pitoniak and his wife, Kimberley of Southwick, Mass.; one daughter, Jennifer A. Gibson and her husband Alan R. of Rochester, N.H.; one sister, Eleanor F. Szalankiewicz of Westfield, Mass., and three grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 am, Saturday, Feb. 22 in St. Christopher Church, York St., York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Beach Fire Dept., P.O. Linwood G. Adjutant

Linwood G. Adjutant, 90, of 2 Victoria Court, York, widower of Thelma (Perkins) Adjutant, formerly of School Street, Ogunquit, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in York. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, April 11, in Ocean View Cemetery, Route 1, Wells. The Rev. Sharon Miesel will officiate.

Norman E. Moore

Norman Elliot Moore, 76, of Old Mountain Road, Cape Neddick, and N. Bradford, formerly of Holliston, Mass., and Cochituate, Mass., died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at York Hospital. He was a loving husband, a devoted father and brother, and a valued friend who will be greatly missed.

He was born in Wayland, Mass., on April 1, 1926, a son of Clifford Sewall and Albyna Sullivan Moore, and was educated in Cochituate schools. He attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, and was an accomplished watercolorist, photographer and videographer of nature. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Moore was a semi-professional singer and the featured vocalist with a 20-piece big band from 1949 to 1959, and was also the vocalist with several smaller groups during the same period. Additionally, he worked as a sheet-metal mechanic, Realtor, and a heating and ventilation estimator, retiring in 1991. He was also proud of his many contributions to his daughter’s dairy goat farm in Cape Neddick.

He began his military service on Sept. 5, 1944, in the U.S. Army, joining the famed 29th Infantry Division and continued with this division until V-E day. He was awarded the Presidential Citation, Good Conduct medal, American Theatre and European Theatre campaign ribbons with three battle stars, Victory ribbon with star, occupational ribbon of Germany and Combat Infantryman’s Badge.

He re-enlisted on Nov. 8,1945, and worked as an MP in Germany and France. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 24, 1948, with the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Moore was predeceased by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy Michelson Moore, who died on Dec. 30, 1989, and who he honored and loved infinitely.

Survivors include his daughter, Cheryle Moore-Smith and her husband, Wyl Smith, of Cape Neddick; two sons, Danny Robinson of Maynard, Mass., and his wife, Karen, of Ayer, Mass and., Leland Robinson and his wife, Candace, of Milford, Mass.; his sister, Rose Yeager, of York; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 3 in Cape Neddick. Family and friends are invited to call Cheryle and Wyl at 361-2126 for details and directions.

Lorraine C. Anderson

Lorraine Commons Anderson, 72, of York, died peacefully at her home on March 13, 2003.

Born in New York City, N.Y., she was a graduate of the Putney School in Vermont and Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass.

She was secretary and treasurer of the Juniper Park Association Inc., of York, for many years. She was an avid gardener, a talented crafter, and was passionate about her historic home, the Joseph Preble House, erected in 1648 and considered to be one of the oldest homes in Maine.

Mrs. Anderson is survived by her four daughters, Amanda Fraley, of Savannah, Ga., Erica Bridges, of York, Cynthia Carroll, of Buxton, and Penny Dickson of Bolton, Mass.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be private. A memorial service will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Cleo Fund, c/o Mary Scott, 28 Byfield Road, Portland, ME 04103, to benefit the spaying and neutering of pets. Arrangements are by Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, York.

William W. Devine Jr.

William W. Devine Jr., 67, of Stoneridge Lane, York Beach, formerly of Melrose and Malden, Mass., the husband of Claire (Carey) Devine, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at York Hospital.

Born in Woburn, Mass., on Nov. 13, 1935, he was the son of William E. and Catherine (Conway) Devine and graduated from Malden Catholic High School in 1952.

He served in the United States Air Force for four years.

He worked as a first-class lineman for the Massachusetts Electric Company for 35 years. He formerly lived in Malden and Melrose and moved to York in 1987.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher Church in York and a member of the Elks Club of Malden.

He was predeceased by a son, James M. Cahill, who died in 1999 and by a daughter, Gertrude Ann Cahill, who died in 1973.

Members of his family include his wife, Claire E. (Carey) Devine of York; two sons, William Devine III and Stephen Devine, both of York Beach; four daughters, Mrs. Domenic (Karen) Galeno of York, Mrs. Donald (Mary) Rivers of York Beach, Mrs. Orazio (Claire) Galeno of York, and Mrs. Roy (Elaine) Tribble of Malden, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, March 17, in St. Christopher Church, York. Interment followed in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden, Mass.

If desired, memorial donations may be made to either the York Volunteer Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 238, York, ME 03909 or to York Hospital, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909.
