Dean George "Bud" Woodward

Dean George "Bud" Woodward, 74, of Scituate Road, York, died peacefully March 14, 2003, at home surrounded by his family and friends.

After graduation, Bud worked for the Maine State Highway Department and was one of the firefighters assigned to the Arundel area to fight the wildfires of October 1947.

Bud served in the U.S. Army from January 1951 to January 1953. During this time, he was a radio operator in Korea and was proud to have received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a United Nations Service Medal.

After returning from the Army, Bud owned and operated the York Corner Esso Station for many years. Bud finished his working career with the York Highway Department, where many people came to know him as the landfill operator.

Bud was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan and an avid antique collector. He loved flowers, especially his beautiful, red climbing roses, and if it was mechanical, he could make it run.

One of Bud’s passions was continuing the family Memorial Day tradition of placing the American flag on veterans’ graves at the obscure and mostly forgotten gravesites of the Scituate-Chase’s Pond area. Recognizing and honoring veterans was especially important to him.

Bud also collected toys during the year to be refurbished and given to less fortunate children at Christmas.

Friends all over the area will remember Bud as a gentleman and true Maine native, who was generous, loved his family and was always willing to help. His kindness, good nature, humor and smile will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Woodbury, Deborah A. Scates and Maureen A Raynes; two great-nieces, Elizabeth A. Woodbury and Jennie A. Barbarick; two great-nephews, Derek N. Scates and Jedidiah Thompson; two great-great-nephews, Keenan R. Woodbury and Hayden P. Thompson; ex-wife Virginia Woodward and several cousins.

Bud was predeceased by his sister, Abby W. Raynes, who died in April 1993; his great-nephew, Josiah T.C. Woodbury, who died in November 1994, and his brother-in-law, Raymond H. Starkey, who died in August 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Parish Congregational Church, York Street, York. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Aspinquid Masonic Lodge 198, P.O. Box 408, York, ME 03909.
