Starkey family celebrates matriarch’s 101st birthday

The following is re-printed with permission of The Patriot Ledger, from May 10, 2003, at the request of the family.

WEYMOUTH, Mass. - "I’d rather be 50!" said Rosa Starkey before the start of a party in honor of her 101st birthday at the Pope Nursing home in Weymouth last week.

Starkey added, however, that she was looking forward to the party, which featured a marble cake topped with pink roses.

"A party with balloons and cake is nice," she said.

Starkey picked out the dress she was going to wear for the occasion and asked that her shoes be polished.

"She is very particular about the way she dresses," said her daughter-in-law, Marion Starkey.

Rosa Starkey, or "Mimi" as the family calls her, grew up in York, Maine, where she met and married her husband, Gilbert Starkey. They were married for 68 years.

Mimi and her husband lived on a farm and "saved up to buy whatever they needed," said Marion Starkey. "They did not believe in credit cards."

She also loved to cook.

"I made all kinds of pies," said Mimi.

"My father-in-law had a garden and Mimi cooked dishes from all that he grew," said Marion Starkey.

It was nine years ago that Mimi moved in with her son, Gilbert Jr., and his wife, Marion, in Weymouth.

Mimi was brought to the nursing home just a few weeks short of her 101st birthday. "Suddenly she lost her motor skills and was taken to the hospital," said her son, Gilbert Starkey.

"But it is mere perseverance," said Marion Starkey, "that has seen Mimi through." Mimi used to love to play cards and read.

"I just want to get better, so that I can go back home," said Mimi. "I do miss my grandchildren and great-grandchildren the most."

She has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She traces happy memories to the times they spent in the family cottage in Maine that her husband built. "I loved going to the lake," said Mimi.

As Mimi cut her marble cake topped with pink roses to celebrate her 101st birthday, she prayed for good health.
